Quick time player doesnt start any more since kernel shock and update, the symbol looks different, reinstallation doesn´t work
hi there.
I am using a Macbook Pro with snow leopard and this is my problem:
I was having a Kernel Shock 2 weeks ago. After that, my Finder-Dashboard hasn´t work any more. I´ve did the latest update. Now Dashboard Works but Quick Time Player doesns´t do.
I Can´t find NOWHERE in the internet an installation file for Quick time player to reinstall. And I can´t find my Installation DVD.
quicktime has changed his symbol to an white picture with pensil and brush.
I have made a second Account and activeted the guest accounts and tryed there, but Quick time player isn´t here working to.
its really sad that this program doesn´t run any more.
It blinks 2 times in the dock and shut down immediately.
Can someone please help me? is my only opinion finding the Disc?
I've tested that on an iPad 1 and it seems problem is performance related. On this device a simple click to a google search result link doesn't work properly. You hit the target multiple times and sporadically it opens. You still see the focus on the object and it's activation but no event triggering happens.
All others functions are working well, only Webapps and Webpages suffer from this issue.
The owner of the device has not recognized that issue and believed it is a "feature" not a bug as he do not has much experience with Apple devices. But this confirms it is on every device and not my own personal one or dedicated to our office. The only workaround is to use other devices or touching links with different speed/pressure. It works better if you hit the objects very quick lifting the finger immediately.

I bought an external hard drive for backups to use with Time Machine, but however when I try to connect it with the other windows laptop it doesn't work ? intact it doesn't work on any other device except my MAC ?
Do not worry about it.
Time Machine needs that your external drive is formatted in HFS+, or better known as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". This filesystem is used by Apple on Macs and Windows cannot read or write drives formatted with this filesystem, being this the reason why all your devices do not read the external drive except your Mac.
You can only use your external drive to make Time Machine drives. If you store anything different, you may damage the Time Machine structure, so it is better not to use it as a drive to store other data. Clicking the triangle icon gives you additional options, such as letting you choose whether to use the built-in microphone on your Mac, an external microphone you've connected to your Mac, a microphone from a connected Apple display, or the option to simply use no microphone at all. The triangle also allows you to adjust the finished quality of your screen recording, select whether or not your mouse clicks are shown during the recording (the pointer is highlighted when you click), and to select what location (on your Mac) to save your screen recording when finished.

My Satellite doesnt start any more missing or corrupt file
Hi, I have a problem which I hope someone will be able to help me out on.
My laptop (satellite) suddenly couldn't boot anymore, saying that the following file was missing or corrupt: windows\system32\config\system.
After doing some research I accessed the recovery console (using an xp cd) and tried to replace it. Making a back up of the original and replacing it from c:\windows\repair\system.bak
Now, the computer starts to boot, it shows the XP Home edition loading screen, but then the screen goes blank. And nothing happens. When I try to access the recovery console again, it asks me for the Administrator password when I try to log on to the windows installation. I then ran a program that can find the admin password and discovered that there was no admin password. However, just pressing return is denied!
I am now stuck. If anyone could offer any tips or ideas about how I can fix this, without a complete re format, as there are some important files on the laptop, that would be great!!

I'm going crazy!pt0608, Windows 2K/XP makes backup copies of the system registry every time it creates a system restore point located in "C:\System Volume Information" or c:\system~1 (plus a few sub-folders) so I would recommend using these files instead. Since you have an XP install CD it might be worth considering creating a BartPE bootable environment - http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder
This will provide you access to NTFS drives, USB removable flash drives, networking, and a cmd.exe prompt so you can copy files at your leisure.

Corrupted Quick Time Player -- no window -- Any ideas?
As a result of closing and opening QuickTime too quickly it seems I've ended up with an unsolvable problem. I've run the repair on it but when I try to open it, all I get is the icon in my taskbar and nothing more. I've tried deinstalling and reinstalling and I get the same. I've gone back to the earliest version of Windows which should have predated the problem and I still end up with the same problem: the QuickTime indicator in the taskbar that won't open into a window.
This might be a damaged QuickTime preferences file.
Restart the PC. Make sure QuickTime has not been opened. Open "My Computer" and go "Tools > Folder Options". Click on the "View" tab. Make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected and OK out of the tab.
Now open "Local Disk C:".
Open the "Documents and Settings" folder.
Open the folder with the name of your XP user account.
Open the "Local Settings" folder.
Open the "Application Data" folder.
Open the "Apple Computer" folder.
Open the "QuickTime" folder.
Drag the QuickTime preferences file you see in there out onto the desktop.
Now launch QuickTime (this should rebuild your QuickTime preferences file).
Does the QuickTime window display normally now? -

QuickTime supports many different file types & codecs, but not all. In many cases you can lookup, download & install specific codecs if you need them.

If iChat is Open and your think Accounts/Screen Names are logged in then go to the Window Menu
This should list the accounts that are logged in with various keystrokes ( Apple/CMD ( or ⌘) and a Number) shown next to them.
Using these should get the Buddy list "back".
It is possible to Hide the Buddy list and then Quit iChat.
iChat will then "remember" where the windows were eve if this was Hidden.
Can you confirm that after reinstalling or restoring from Time Machine with possibly an Earlier Version you have Downloaded the COMBO version of OS X 10.6.8 and "run the COMBO" (Installed it - again) to update iChat ?
It is possible the text chat Window is also Hidden on double clicking a Buddy.
The easiest way for this to happen is to use a second Display and drag some windows to the second Display.
iChat "remembers" where you last had Outgoing Chats so Audio and Video windows will be where you left them as will Text Chats.
Incoming Chat Invites are normally in set places unless there is a chat already open to that Buddy.
With Windowing issue like this is sometimes pays to delete com.apple.ichat.plist itself (on it's own) and restart iChat (this plist holds the window positions amongst other things)

I can't open one Quick Time movie file. It says: Quick time player can't open (names file) because the movie's file format isn't recognized. Only happens on this one file. All the others of a two hour shoot are fine.

I have been ripping my audiobooks and I was finding that they would get uploaded to iCloud in the process, which in itself was fine, but then iTunes would not let me change the media type to Audiobook, which is annoying as it effects how iTunes treats the media. Like showing you the skip back 10 seconds button.
The general outline here helped me work around the issue and change the media type before the media was re-uploaded to iCloud.
