Quicker migration - Firewire or Ethernet

Need to migrate a lot of files (over 100 GB) from a G5 iMac to a new MacBook Pro. Which provides faster transfer, Firewire or Ethernet?
Cheers.

I haven't used Firewire on my MBP yet, but I migrated my Intel iMac files to it after I bought it using an Ethernet cable and it took less than two hours for roughly 120 GB of data.

    is snow leopard usb backup drive access much much quicker using firewire than with usb 2.0 ?

    I migrated from a USB2 external hard drive (when it failed) to the Firewire 800 and have not looked back.  I also sync from that primary drive to a secondary backup drive (still USB2).  Everything I do with the firewire drive is significantly faster than USB2.

  • Problems using Quick Migrate in SQL Developer 1.5 for MySQL to Oracle 10g

    Hi all,
    I am trying to use SQL Developer 1.5 migration tools (Quick Migrate) to perform online capture and build source model to migrate from MySQL 5.x to Oracle 10g on Windows platform. I get these errors and the Quick Migrate process fails:
    oracle.dbtools.metadata.persistence.PersistableObject.doInsert(PersistableObject.java:238)
    I did a search and used the sqldeveloper.cmd script but still fails. Then I created a new database and truncated the repository. I now get the above error plus two new ones listed below:
    oracle.jdbc.driver.DatabaseError.throwSqlException(DatabaseError.java:112)
    Error loading nls:OALL8 is in an inconsistent state
    Error occurred during capture: Protocol violation
    It fails during the capture process for MySQL 5.1 database
    when it begins to capture the tables from MySQL.
    Does anyone know how to resolve these issues when migrating from MySQL to Oracle 10g using Quick Migrate with SQL Developer 1.5 release?

    Hi all,
    I put the following in my sqldeveloper.cmd file:
    SET ORACLE_HOME=%CD%
    What is very confusing is that with SQL Developer 1.5, there are several levels and several SQL Developer executables! I am really not sure which of these to use:
    I created the SQLDeveloper 1.5 directory called SQLDeveloper1_5 on Windows:
    1) cd C:\sqldeveloper1_5\sqldeveloper-5338
    there exists a sqldeveloper.exe
    2) cd c:\sqldeveloper1_5\sqldeveloper-5338\sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper.exe
    3) cd c:\sqldeveloper1_5\sqldeveloper-5338\sqldeveloper\sqldeveloer\bin\sqldeveloper.exe
    Which SQLDeveloper 1.5 executable should I be using and where should I place the
    sqldeveloper.cmd file?
    Also I did try to use a different database and schema for the repository with Quick Migrate but it appears a bug exists in SQL Developer 1.5 version that causes errors with Quick Migrate for MySQL to Oracle? Is this correct?
    As an update, I ran the following commands:
    cd to
    c:\sqldeveloper1_5\sqldeveloper-5338\sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper\bin
    sqldeveloper.cmd sqldeveloper.exe
    Start sqldeveloper.exe
    Perform standard capture for MySQL using the new mig2 schema as the new repository
    It starts the capture but fails on the errors below:
    Error loading nls:OALL8 is in an inconsistent state
    UPDATE
    ============================
    I tried this again and it worked with the exception of one error message listed below:
    Here are the steps that I followed:
    1. Create a Windows cmd script
    Put the following entries in the script:
    SET ORACLE_HOME=%CD%
    save the command windows script as sqldeveloper.cmd
    Copy this script to the base installation directory for SQLDeveloper
    Example:
    1. cd c:\SQLDeveloper1_5\sqldeveloper-5338\sqldeveloper
    2. Start SQLDeveloper with the command script that you created earlier
    Example:
    Open a Windows shell prompt window and execute the following scripts:
    a) sqldeveloper.cmd sqldeveloper.exe
    b) sqldeveloper.exe
    3) In SQL Developer 1.5
    From the Migrate menu,
    a) Delete current repository and create a new schema in Oracle target database call it mig2.
    b) Then create a new repository in SQL Developer 1.5
    c) Right mouse click on the MySQL 5.x database and choose capture
    It worked with the exception of one error message:
    o.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver
    Error while registering Oracle JDBC Diagnosability MBean.
    So it looks like something is screwed up with my JDBC drivers and configuration for MySQL. How do I diagnose the JDBC driver issue for MySQL?
    Thanks!!!

  • Quick Migration from Access db to Oracle using Sql Developer

    Hey
    I created a connection to an Access DB and then did a quick migration of the tables and data into my Oracle schema. Great!
    Now if I add a new table to my Access DB, how do I get this new access table into my Oracle schema without having to do the migration all over again
    Thanks

    I don't think so. It is intended for one-off migrations after all.
    You can probably migrate a single table by going through the longer migration process and excluding the ones you have already done.

  • Failed to locate source plugin in Quick Migration wizard

    I'm trying to migrate a simple Sql Server 2005 database (only a few tables without data) in an oracle XE Database server .

    I can connect to Sql Server and browse database objects.
    I've created an Oracle Schema with the correct grants and permissions and I've associated "Migration repository"

  • Access quick migration error - missing privilege

    I'm trying to migrate an access 2000 db using the quick migrate, but when I do the pre-migration check I get a "FAILED" for "Checking target rights" - the information says "Missing privilege CREATE VIEW". The user has create view, so I'm not sure what's going on.
    Is there a way to get more details as to what causes this failure?

    just created a user:
    create user abc identified by abc;
    and granted only:
    grant connect,resource to abc;
    Now SQlDevMWB claims about missing create view privilege.
    So I granted also:
    grant create view to abc;
    and now it works well.
    So I would suggest you check the privileges manually using SQL*Plus.
    Here it would be best to define a view that collects all privileges:
    CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW DBA_USER_PRIVS (USERNAME, ROLENAME, PRIVILEGE) AS
    SELECT DECODE(SA1.GRANTEE#, 1, 'PUBLIC', U1.NAME), SUBSTR(U2.NAME,1,20),
    SUBSTR(SPM.NAME,1,27)
    FROM SYS.SYSAUTH$ SA1, SYS.SYSAUTH$ SA2, SYS.USER$ U1,
    SYS.USER$ U2, SYS.SYSTEM_PRIVILEGE_MAP SPM
    WHERE SA1.GRANTEE# = U1.USER#
    AND SA1.PRIVILEGE# = U2.USER#
    AND U2.USER# = SA2.GRANTEE#
    AND SA2.PRIVILEGE# = SPM.PRIVILEGE
    UNION
    SELECT U.NAME, NULL, SUBSTR(SPM.NAME,1,27)
    FROM SYS.SYSTEM_PRIVILEGE_MAP SPM, SYS.SYSAUTH$ SA, SYS.USER$ U
    WHERE SA.GRANTEE#=U.USER#
    AND SA.PRIVILEGE#=SPM.PRIVILEGE
    and now you can simply check:
    select * from dba_user_privs where username='ABC';
    What are the permissions for your user?

  • SQL Developer Quick Migrate error

    I am attempting to migrate my databases from SQL Server 2000 to Oracle 11g. I am attempting to use the quick migrate feature of Oracle SQL Developer and receiving an error, the same error for every database during the build stage. The error is as follows. Any ideas as to resolve this error?

    Brian

    Hi Brian,
    There are 2 ways to migrate your database to Oracle using SQL Developer.
    1)Normal Migration
    *This is the standard way of migrating a database
    2)Quick Migrate
    *Quick Migrate is basically the "Normal Migration" with all the defaults chosen and each phase capture/convert/generate  and data move performed for you.
    *Requires very little intervention and tries to complete the entire migration in 1 go.
    *Suitable for only small databases and trying out the tool
    *Does not allow you to modify anything during the migration
    "What do you mean perform the capture of the SQL Server DB then convert and generate? "
    I would suggest having a look at this viewlet. A SQL Server Migration ("Northwind") is performed.
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/migration/workbench/viewlets/sqlserver.html
    The steps are outlined in the doc here
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10405_01/doc/appdev.120/e10406/migration.htm
    You can find more viewlets here
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/migration/workbench/files/sdmwb_viewlets.html
    And the main SQL Developer Migration Workbench OTN page (which links to everything) here
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/migration//workbench/index_sqldev_omwb.html
    So once, you capture/convert and generate your script to create your Oracle database. You should be able to identify the exact problem with the DDL.

    We have two more customers that currently are in the process of upgrading from MS SQL but as far as I know no one has actually performed an upgrade this far.
    If you want to upgrade to OIM 9.1 you will have to wait until the upgrade scripts are available (estimated arrival H2 2008 according to the latest info I have).
    If you would like to discuss this further send me an email on firstname.lastname@my_company.com (you can get the "variables" from my forum profile)

  • Quick Migrate Creates a Trigger with Infinite Loop

    Quick Migrate did a good job at nicely converting my MS SQL Database to Oracle. The only problem that I have is triggers. I have a table with the companies and when the table is just created and there are no rows in the table, on the very first insert it goes into a constant loop. There is no code I have altered after the migration has been completed.
    So, there is:
    table: RA_COMPANY
    sequence: SEQ_RA_COMPANY_ID
    trigger: TRG_RA_COMPANY_ID
    table has no rows, trigger has been compiled and sequence hasn't been accessed so on the first insert, the trigger should put 1 into the newly added row. Here is the migration code for the trigger:
    CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER TRG_RA_COMPANY_ID BEFORE INSERT OR UPDATE ON RA_COMPANY
    FOR EACH ROW
    DECLARE
    v_newVal NUMBER(12) := 0;
    v_incval NUMBER(12) := 0;
    BEGIN
      IF INSERTING AND :new.ID IS NULL THEN
        SELECT SEQ_RA_COMPANY_ID.NEXTVAL INTO v_newVal FROM DUAL;
        -- If this is the first time this table have been inserted into (sequence == 1)
        IF v_newVal = 1 THEN
          --get the max indentity value from the table
          SELECT max(ID) INTO v_newVal FROM RA_COMPANY;
          v_newVal := v_newVal + 1;
          --set the sequence to that value
          LOOP
               EXIT WHEN v_incval>=v_newVal;
               SELECT SEQ_RA_COMPANY_ID.nextval INTO v_incval FROM dual;
          END LOOP;
        END IF;
       -- assign the value from the sequence to emulate the identity column
       :new.ID := v_newVal;
      END IF;
    END;
    ALTER TRIGGER TRG_RA_COMPANY_ID ENABLE;
    /and on the first insert, the loop that is in the middle will be an infinite loop.
    I do need only the inserts and I removed the UPDATE part and the loop itself but I am just wondering why is migration process creating this loop.
    thanks

    Hi Tridy,
    I look into this for you.
    I can see that this line
    SELECT max(ID) INTO v_newVal FROM RA_COMPANY;
    Is going to cause an issue if there are no rows.
    I wonder if
    SELECT NVL(max(ID),0) INTO v_newVal FROM RA_COMPANY;
    Solve the issue?
    Ill do some tests latter today and get back to you.

    Murray,
    Apologies for referring to the 1.5 documentation but the 2.1 documentation still has the same information about creating a user to hold the repository.
    You initially reported 2 problems -
    1. Locating source plugin...failed
    2. Checking multi-schema privileges...Privilege 'CREATE ROLE" is not granted with admin option.
    For the first error have you installed the necessary JDBC driver ? I have just installed SQL*Developer 2.1 on a new laptop and could successfully connect following the documentation steps -
    Oracle® SQL Developer
    User’s Guide
    Release 2.1
    2.5.2 Before Migrating From Microsoft SQL Server or Sybase Adaptive Server
    To configure a Microsoft SQL Server or Sybase Adaptive Server database for
    migration:
    1. Ensure that the source database is accessible by the Microsoft SQL Server or
    Sybase Adaptive Server user that is used by SQL Developer for the source
    connection. This user must be able to see any objects to be captured in the
    Microsoft SQL Server or Sybase Adaptive Server database; objects that the user
    cannot see are not captured. For example, if the user can execute a stored
    procedure but does not have sufficient privileges to see the source code, the stored
    procedure cannot be captured.
    2. Ensure that you can connect to the Microsoft SQL Server or Sybase Adaptive
    Server database from the system where you have installed SQL Developer.
    3. Ensure that you have downloaded the JTDS JDBC driver from
    http://jtds.sourceforge.net/.
    4. In SQL Developer, if you have not already installed the JTDS driver using Check
    for Updates (on the Help menu), do the following:
    a. Click Tools, then Preferences, then Database, then Third Party JDBC Drivers.
    b. Click Add Entry.
    c. Select the jar file for the JTDS driver you downloaded from
    http://jtds.sourceforge.net/.
    d. Click OK.
    ========
    The second error is again documented in the 2.1 documentation -
    5.99 Privilege Warning for Migration
    This dialog box is displayed if you click Verify in the Quick Migrate box and the
    database user for the connection does not have all privileges necessary for a
    multischema migration. For multischema migrations, this user must granted the
    RESOURCE role with the ADMIN option; and this user must also be granted the
    CREATE ROLE, CREATE USER, and ALTER ANY TRIGGER privileges, all with the
    ADMIN option.
    If you are performing a single-schema migration, you can ignore this warning.
    =====
    Which errors are you now seeing and which user was used to hold the repository ?
    If you are using GRAINTEST for the repository then create it using this syntax -
    CREATE USER GRAINTEST IDENTIFIED BY password <=== change password as necessary
    DEFAULT TABLESPACE users TEMPORARY TABLESPACE temp; <=== change tablespaces as necessary
    GRANT CONNECT, RESOURCE, CREATE VIEW, CREATE PUBLIC SYNONYM TO
    GRAINTEST WITH ADMIN OPTION;
    GRANT ALTER ANY ROLE, ALTER ANY SEQUENCE, ALTER ANY TABLE, ALTER TABLESPACE,
    ALTER ANY TRIGGER, COMMENT ANY TABLE, CREATE ANY SEQUENCE, CREATE ANY TABLE,
    CREATE ANY TRIGGER, CREATE ROLE, CREATE TABLESPACE, CREATE USER, DROP ANY
    SEQUENCE, DROP ANY TABLE, DROP ANY TRIGGER, DROP TABLESPACE, DROP USER, DROP ANY
    ROLE, GRANT ANY ROLE, INSERT ANY TABLE, SELECT ANY TABLE, UPDATE ANY TABLE TO
    GRAINTEST with admin option ;
    then when making the migration make sure the Oracle connection is to this user.
    Please update the thread with the errors you get after following these steps.
    Regards,
    Mike

  • Problem while migrating from Sybase to Oracle using Quick Migrate

    Hi,
    For SQL Developer version 2.1, while migrating from sybase to oracle, Using Quick migrate, during data move step, for the rows having ''(Blank) values in TEXT data type in SYBASE, which is convertd to CLOB in Oracle, the migration for that table terminates at that row.
    However, NULL values in Sybase TEXT data type are successfully inserted in Oracle CLOB.
    How can we overcome this?

    reproduced and see exception in console, bug logged.

  • Low priority VM and Quick migration

    Hi ,
    When we pause or set one of hyper-v host on maintenance , the fail-over cluster migrate VMs to another hosts , some VMs migrate  using live migrated and the others  using Quick migrated
    I notice the VMs that are  prioritized with low  priority using Quick migration
    Why not all VMs doesn't use live migration ?
    thanks
    Ramy

    I don't think this is related to priority. My experience has been that VMs that are running are live-migrated, while VMs that are paused or powered down cannot be live-migrated but must be quick migrated. This makes sense if you think about it. Live-migration
    migrates a running VM's memory and settings then the storage handle. None of these apply if the VM is down.
