QuickTime chapters in iDVD...

Has anyone ever been successful in getting QuickTime chapter markers to appear in iDVD? I do not have Final Cut (of any description) and I really don't want to re-import this video (DV-25 format) into iMovie just to add chapter markers that iDVD will use.
I've tried adding chapter markers by hand, and I have tried adding chapter markers using Metadata Hootenanny (http://metahoot.3ivx.com). Either way, the chapters work perfectly in QuickTime (I am using v6.5.2), but iDVD pretends they don't exist.
Do I need to eliminate the chapter marker at 0:00:00.00? Do I need to rename the chapter track? Do I need to remove the text attributes on the chapter track? Is there some other wizardry that I am missing? Apple claims that iDVD will import chapter tracks from QuickTime but I have NEVER been able to get it to work...!
--Dave Althoff, Jr. (this was why I felt like I got burned when I bought iDVD 4)

Sue suggested...
*Make sure no chapter markers are within two seconds
of the start or end of the timeline.
Hmmm...I can try removing the 0:00:00.00 chapter marker and see what happens...
*Make sure no chapter markers are within a
transition.
There are no transitions. This is a single continuous QuickTime movie.
*Make sure no chapter markers are within two seconds
of the end of a transition.
There are no transitions. This is a single continuous QuickTime movie.
*Make sure you do not have the "Share selected Clips"
option checked when preparing to share to iDVD
QuickTime Pro has no such option.
The other difficulty is that this movie is 1;28;01;28, which means it is WAAAAY too big to import into iMovie HD. QT says the data size is approximately (I can't check exactly; it's now compressing to MPEG-4) 18 Gb.
Let me re-iterate...this is a DV-format movie in QuickTime (actually exported from Avid Xpress Pro). Two people have suggested that iDVD-5 has forgotten how to get chapter data from QuickTime; but in truth, I could never make it work in iDVD 3 or 4 either.

  • QuickTime chapters to iDVD?

(Yes, I asked in the iDVD forum. I am asking here in case some QuickTime wizard knows more about this than the iDVD wizards do...)
Apple claims that iDVD can import chapter markers from QuickTime.
I have built chapter tracks by hand, and I have built chapter tracks using Metadata Hootenanny (http://metahoot.3ivx.com). Either way, the chapters work PERFECTLY in QuickTime, and are completely ignored by iDVD.
    Any ideas?
    --Dave Althoff, Jr.

Well, I still haven't looked at the binaries to make any sense of them. But I did pass the files through Dumpster and found something interesting.
The first thing I noticed was that the time bases of the two files are different. Remember, one file is the chapter track extracted from the iMovie movie; the other is a fresh chapter track made from the text file exported by QT Pro from the iMovie chapter track. The iMovie chapter track has a timebase of 2997 while the QT chapter track has a timebase of 1000. As nearly as I can tell, looking at the files on the "atomic" level using Dumpster, that accounts for nearly all of the differences between the two files.
Until I get to the bottom of the list. (Warning, it's about to get really geeky!)
As I go through the tree, I see similar but not identical values for most elements:
    moov
    -- mvhd (timebases are different)
    -- trak
-- -- tkhd (similar except for duration, but timebases are different)
-- -- edts (identical except for duration, but timebases are different)
    -- -- mdia
-- -- -- mdhd (identical except timescale and duration)
    -- -- -- hdlr (identical)
    -- -- -- minf
    -- -- -- -- gmhd
    -- -- -- -- -- gmin (identical)
    -- -- -- -- -- text (identical)
    -- -- -- -- hdlr (identical)
    -- -- -- -- dinf
    -- -- -- -- -- dref
............this one has different values between the two files, but I suspect that might again be because of the different timebase values.
    -- -- -- -- stbl
-- -- -- -- -- stsd (Different. Mine has more values provided, but these appear to be text attributes which iMovie doesn't bother to set.)
-- -- -- -- -- stts (Different, but definitely because of timebase difference)
    -- -- -- -- -- stsc (identical)
-- -- -- -- -- stsz (Different. Odd, this appears to be the lengths of the chapter labels, and the QT version makes them one byte longer.)
-- -- -- -- -- stco (Different but makes up for the difference shown in stsz)
And now this is where they start to really diverge, and I think this is the critical part. The QT version has:
    -- -- udta
    -- udta
    -- -- WLOC [$023A|$0037]
    The iMovie version has:
    -- -- udta
    -- -- -- name [$4368|$6170|$7465|$7220|$5472|$6163]
    -- -- -- chap [$6368|$6170]
    -- -- -- kgit [$6368|$6170]
    -- udta
    -- -- wide
    -- -- WLOC [$0048|$0034]
Now, call me crazy, but I'm almost willing to bet that the "name", "chap" and "kgit" atoms in the first "udta" atom of the "trak" atom is important. I can't tell off hand looking at the data whether the values are significant, but it looks like that might be where iDVD is getting its chapter information instead of from the conventional media descriptor fields. Hmmm...Dumpster will show me the atoms, I wonder how I can set them arbitrarily...
    [EDIT:]
Duh. Translate to ASCII, and the contents of the atoms are as follows:
    -- -- udta
    -- -- -- name [Chapter Track]
    -- -- -- chap [chap]
    -- -- -- kgit [chap]
    [/EDIT]
Oh, and I'll bet that moov-level udta atom "wide" (which contains no data) is the flag that tells iDVD that this movie is anamorphic widescreen. I think the Anamorphiciser sets that by copying the target movie into a reference movie that already has that flag set, but setting it programmatically would be a cleaner way to do it...
I wonder how I can arbitrarily set QuickTime udta atoms...

  • Quicktime File with Chapters to iDVD?

I was getting "multiplexing" errors with a particular iDVD project that I imported from iMovie 6 so I thought I would export the project as a full Quicktime file and then drag the Quicktime file into iDVD. Will the chapter markers still show up in iDVD?

as described by Donnyboy69. Does the title of your project have any symbols or decimal points in it. If so, that is why you are getting the error. I had a project that had a + sign which caused the same problem. I renamed it without the symbol and low and behold, it worked.

Back again. Here is what I have found to work. I also have and use a LaCie DVD-R/RW DL external drive and a LaCie external hard drive as well. Since yesterday I have tried a few ways to burn a themed iDVD project having four 56 minute movies on it, amounting to 226 minutes onto a DVD DL disc, capacity 240 minutes. Apple tech support really didn't know what to do but gave me a very good tip. I had two options left. Apple tech support's tip was to try disc image. One of the replies on a thread with this subject said not to, but my experience today is good. Put your project onto "Burn to disc image," under "iDVD, file." Yesterday encoding took me 23 1/2 hours. Overnight for iDVD disc image, encoding took 21 1/2 hours (again) while I slept. This morning I tried to copy/burn disc image to a DVD with Roxio Toast 7, and it stopped near the end of the burn with some kind of "error" message. So then I tried Utilities> Disc Utility> Burn icon, and followed it through. Be sure to click the DVD DL drive in the window "Burn disc in.". I had one other problem though. At the end of a 46 minute copy, it started to verify, and at the end of verify it rejected the burn. So I tried again, and when "verify" appeared, I clicked on "Skip." The disc finished burning and is doing fine and well. A long and tortuous process, but at last something works. I made several additional copies using Disc Utility. Best wishes. Chuck, Chicago.

(Not a 'guy' but I will answer!)
First, I do not think that mixing widescreen and standard makes a difference in iDVD.
Second, you should use a better brand of DVD disk. Also, many of us have experienced fewer problems on playback with DVD-R disks. Recommended brands here are Verbatim, Maxell and Taio Yuden. Memorex and TDK are not consistent and may not give you a correct burn. They apparently have fewer layers in the composition of the disk. I have always used Verbatim DVD-R disks and have not had any burn problems.
Also, choose a slower burn speed, 4x or less.
Third, to determine if the iDVD project will burn properly, create a disk image file (from within iDVD, go File->Save as Disk Image) and test it. Mount the disk image and then open DVD Player (in Applications) and view your project. If it plays correctly, you can then burn the actual DVD disk from the disk image file using Disk Utility.

I did everything I've seen suggested, but a friend (who used to be an Apple Genius) suggested that I do a safe reboot (by holding down the shift key until you see the spinning gear on grey background, then release, then restart when your start-up screen appears).
It worked, and I got a clean burn from iDVD.
Hopefully this can help other people.

Well, I finally got it, and it was odd enough to post here incase anyone looks this topic up again. Many things were tried, including burning the uneditited film, the edited film without titles and chapter markers, abbreviating the chapter markers in case length was the issue (remember the old iMovie used to truncate them when moving to iDVD?). In the process, I noticed that one, and only one, chapter marker was on the same line as the title marker. All the others were on the line above. The only way I seemed able to change that was to clip a few seconds of film. After that last clip, the offending marker took a place on the line above, as were all the others. That run published, compiled completely and burned. That's one for the books.

  • Chapters for iDVD 7.1.1

    Hello everybody...
Got a question regarding chapters in iDVD. I edited a movie in FCP and created a serie of chapter markers on it and also export them as chapters markers as well. If I understand correctly when importing the movie into the iDVD menu the program should automatically create 2 buttons. One for the movie itself and another one as a selection of scenes that would link to a menu for selecting the scenes. At least that is what the iDVD helpmenu says...
It´s not happening.. So what should I do to make the chapters markers that I created in FCP work in iDVD?
    Thanks a lot

    Hi
I edited a movie in FCP and created a serie of chapter markers on it and also export them as chapters markers as well.
I understands this as that You actively select to Export with Chapter Marks ? OK ?
Many forget to do this in the Export window - or select Export with Marks - Not with Chaper Marks (important)
I do from FCE/P do like this.
(Copy from earlier answer to others)
    *FCE/P to iDVD*
    Several things
    • How to go from FCE/P to iDVD
    • Free space on Start-up hard disk
    • Encoding
    • Brand and type of DVDs used
    • Burn speed set
    • iDVD BUG
    • Chapters
*How to go from FCE/P to iDVD I do*
    • Disable Screen and Energy saver
    • IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mixdown
    • Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
    • Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
    • Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
    • NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
*Free space on Start-up hard disk*
I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
    Encoding
    • I use Pro Quality encoding
*Brand and type of DVDs used*
    • I use Verbatim
    • I use DVD-R
    *Burn speed set*
    • I set down this to x4 (or x1)
    *iDVD BUG*
    • One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to
the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither
    of them will work.
Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
    *Use of Chapters*
    • I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
    • NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it stlf
    • No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
    *Material used to build movie*
    • video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this eg .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
    • audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
    • photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
Trash iDVD pref file and run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.
    from post ??
May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screensaving

  • Is there a way to create DVD chapters in iDVD?

Is there a way to create DVD chapters in iDVD? I don't see any options for it in iDVD. Also, I don't want to have to import all the footage back into imovie. Thanks

So, what if iDVD 7.1.2  doesn't recognize the chapters from iMovie 10.0.5?
Apple has removed the ability to create chapters in iMovie 10
I use iMovie 06 to do this. It works perfectly with Mavericks, as does iDVD.  You can purchase iMovie on disk as part of iLife 06, readily available on Amazon and eBay.
It's quite shocking that another feature has been removed from the once mighty iMovie.

  • Problem with split screen quicktime movie to iDVD

hey folks, i've just spent two 6-hour renderings for naught and have the following problem:
    QT Pro 6.5.2
    iDVD 5
    OS 10.3.9
I pulled together a Quicktime movie consisting of talking head interview, then split screen (two clips simultaneously), back to talking head, then split screen again, etc etc.
the first time i rendered the composite Quicktime movie to iDVD, my split screen background was a sickly lime green color. blech
so, i added a black slide in TIFF format ONLY to the split screen video portions. played around with the Layers property until my split screen video clips were in front of the black background. recut and pasted my full Quicktime movie again.
However, upon my second iDVD rendering, a funny thing ocurred. Now, when the DVD gets to a split screen portion, the VERY LAST FRAME OF THE PREVIOUS TALKING HEAD CLIP freezes, and appears in the background of my split screen clips.
    What gives?
I plan to do some testing, but sure would like to shortcut this problem, it's eating away at my weekend and i need to get this project done.
thanks for any insight you can give

Thank you for the feedback. I wasn't privy to the process that converted these files originally but suspected the theory on compression/codec initially used.. may re-convert. Also will try Disk Imaging... seems that this is not an uncommon problem in the iDVD 5 world...

  • Getting Chapters from IDVD to DVD Studio Pro

I have a video that must be paused after chapter segments by user and have found that I need to use DVD studio pro which I purchased today with no knowledge of how it works. Post just today explains that.
I built an entire movie with transitions, audio and chapters iniDVD and Now I would like to get those chapter markers into DVD studio pro. Do i have to first export to Final Cut and then export to DVD Studio.
I have made a quicktime movie that when viewed in Quicktime shows all the chapters(31 in all).
Is there a better way to do this than manually find each time points and adding markers in dvd pro?
Secondly, once i get those markers in DVD studio, can i create a pause and next function as one whole movie or do they need to be separate items(term).
    Thansk for any guidance.

If you added Chapter Markers in Final Cut Pro, then you are all set. In FCP, Export a QuickTime Movie and when the dialog box opens make sure your Markers are set to "DVD Studio Pro Markers".
If you added Chapter Markers in iDVD, then you are out of luck. You have to do it all over again. You could add Chapter Markers in DVD SP, but I recommend doing it in FCP.

  • Adding chapters to iDVD

I'm trying to create a dvd with chapters at specific points in the movie (rather than at regular intervals using "Create Chapter Markers for Movie" in iDVD). So I used Quicktime to add chapter markers using a text track, and I saved this as a self-contained movie. Now, to my understanding, when I import a video with chapter markers into iDVD it should automatically create the correct chapter markers and chapter menu (the option is turned on in my preferences). But this doesn't happen. It just imports as a regular video with no chapter breaks. Am I doing something wrong? How can I do this right?

maybe I should go over the GarageBand tutorial first, right?
Yup, the iLife '08 way of doing things can seem very strange to those of us who have used the iLife applications for a while. There are also several good books available on iLife '08.

  • How do I create chapters in idvd?

I don't have much experience using idvd.  I have created a couple of small dvd's in the past, but would like to make one with my movie divided into scenes and chapters that we can choose from the menu.
I read the instructions Apple Help and clicked the movie once to highlight it.  Then I clicked on Advanced tab and the Create Chapter markers for movie, was not highlighted.  Aaargh!
Is there a step I'm missing?  I had alread tried taking each section of my movie as it's own project in imovie and Sharing it to Media to create them separately, but I can't find those when I'm choosing media in idvd.
    Can someone help?

In iDVD chapters can only be added at preset intervals. After adding the full movie to iDVD select it and go to the Advanced menu:
Set the interval for the chapters in the next window:
If you want chapter markers at specific points in the window you'll have to add those in iMovie or whatever app you use to create the movie.

  • How can I make more than 9 chapters in IDVD? None of the themes will let me..

I am making a dvd of our home movies for each year. I have divided the movies up by month and am trying to make a simple dvd using one of the themes and have one chapter for each month. For example I made an imovie of all the january videos and saved it as an mp4 file. I drag that into the dvd menu screen for the theme I picked on IDVD and name that chapter "January" Everything works great until I have the first 9 months and it won't let me drag any more movies over to make the last 3 chapters for the last 3 months. I haven't been able to find a theme even going back to the oldest ones that allows 12 chapters.. can anyone help me on this one?

I suggest you repost your question in the iDVD section.

  • Keynote to quicktime movie to iDVD, no sound on dvd

I know this has been asked a million times, however I (a relatively recent Mac convert) absolutely can't believe that Apple would not allow this to work.
I have a keynote slideshow with music. I "send to iDVD" as well as "export" into a quicktime movie. Resultant files are movie and soundtrack. I bring into iDVD. Sound plays in iDVD. Burn dvd from iDVD, no sound on dvd.
C'mon, the instructions are there, the menus are there. Apple can't expect us to "import into iMovie, match movie and soundtrack" or "burn using disk utility" or otherwise do anything other than take a keynote and make it in to a dvd.
Worst case, can I just burn a CD or DVD that automatically plays the keynote with sound and doesn't have the cool DVD Menu?
Again, sorry for the "same old question", however I have not found a fix that worked nor do I believe that Apple means for this to be so difficult.
For those experts out there that have seen this question before, I really have spent a significant amount of time researching the problem and haven't found a fix that worked or an official response from Apple.
    Thanks again.

I am not running this on an intranet, I am creating a video for my students and posting it to my Internet web page. So if I were to post the keynote file itself, 4/5 of my students would be unable to open it because they don't have Macs. Some do not even have desktop computers and view stuff on their smart phones. I solved the issue, at least partially, by saving the presentation as html and posting it to my site that way. It works but it is a bit buggy. Would still rather make it into a movie.
