Quicktime exporting AVI files

At Videography Lab we are testing the Pentax Optio W30 and W60 cameras. Both are waterproof but the W60 has a wider lens which we prefer. Unfortunately in upgrading their camera, Pentax moved from a native Quicktime movie to an AVI.
We had gotten quite happy with Quicktime Pros quick edit trimming capability. So we started opening the AVI files with Quicktime Pro and trimming. Than when we were finished we Save As . . . and only get the Quciktime Movie format.
We would like to save them as AVI files. One reason is that Windows XP gives a key frame for AVI movies but only a Q logo for Quicktime movies.
So is there a way to open the AVI in Quicktime Pro > trim > Save as AVI file?

is there a way to open the AVI in Quicktime Pro > trim > Save as AVI file?
What KIND of AVI file. AVI is just a wrapper. Many of the newer cameras use some form of mpg-4 codec in the AVI files. Open the file in the Quicktime player and do a "Window>Show Movie Properties". What video and audio CODEC are shown?
BTW, I use VisualHub to work with my problem AVI files on the Mac side.

Why does Adobe flash profession CS6 can't export avi. file?
but when I watch Youtube video, there are avi file format option in CS6!!!!!!!
    Can anybody help me?
    WHY?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Flash uses the Adobe Media Converter to create the video output. If you select the "Use Media Converter" option after selecting to output to Quicktime, and, if your computer has the AVI codec installed, you should be able to export to an AVI file.

  • How can i make quicktime play avi. files?

    Hello,
You can get from Microsoft, the flip4mac free player. Since Windows Media Player for Mac is no longer supported, this is the way to go.
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx
In my opinion, it is by far the best solution for playing .avi or .wmv files, because you get all the advantages of Quicktime.

  • Aperture crashes upon trying to play video. Exporting .AVI file wont play.

    Hi,
I uploaded my holiday pictures and 4 videos into Aperture and when I try to play the videos I get pretty bad beachball with no playback of the video. When I export the file I am presented with a SAM_xxx.AVI file. (SAM from Samsung camera). I have tried to play the file with Quicktime, VLC & MPlayer X. I ran the 4 files through DivFix++ and I am given the error, "Input file is not .avi"
Any thoughts as to whats going on? Aperture shows a thumbnail for the videos and VLC shows correct length but no playback.
    Thanks

I have both an iPad and iPhone connected to my Mac. I disconnected both, then restarted my Mac and Safari. No improvement. Used Lion Recovery System to reload Lion. Interesting thing, Safari 5.1.7 was installed rather than Safari 6. This made me happy, as Safari 6 has been nothing but trouble for me. When I opened Safari, it took me back to apple.com, even though my homepage is yahoo.com. I was immediately confronted with the infamous Steve Jobs video, that has crashed my computer every time it's popped up on my screen. This time, however, it didn't crash ... I just got the spinning beachball for about 30 seconds, then the Quicktime thermometer at the bottom started moving and I was sure it was going to work. After the thermomter passed about one-fourth of the way over, the screen blanked and the Quicktime thermometer started all over again. This behavior persisted until I got tired of it and went to my home page. However, I can open Quicktime and watch videos again, even the YouTube ones that were crashing every time. Now I just have to figure out how to never let a Software Update stick me with Safari 6 ever again. If it does, I'm simply through with it and will make Firefox my default browser. Thank you so much for getting me this far. I will keep monitoring these discussions to see if Apple ever gets Safari 6 to the point that I'll give it another trial.

  • Quick Time Pro - Problem Exporting AVI files to .mov

Hi all, Here is the problem that has been plaguing me and driving me crazy. hopefully somebody can help me with this.
I use pinnacle studio 8 to create the avi file, the resulting file size is 1.02GB. Everything works fine in this file audio and video
Next I use quicktime pro to convert the file to a .mov format and compress the video down. This is where the problem starts. when I try and export the avi to a .mov, the options screen doesn't allow me to select the audio, it says its not there. I can modify all the settings for the video, but it doesn't even recognize the audio.
It has been doing this for all of my avi videos that are over a gig. It also does this when I try and export an mpeg to a .mov
also if I do go ahead and export to a .mov file, it compresses the videos down to around 5 to 7mb, where as all my videos that are exported to .mov that do have sound are roughly 20+mb
Anybody know whats going on? I'm going nuts trying to figure this out.

Sounds like your AVI isn't really a two track file (audio and video) but rather a muxed MPEG-1 file.
QuickTime Pro can't extract audio from muxed file formats and that is why it shows no sound options during export.
MPEG Streamclip (free) can export MPEG-1 to QuickTime formats and extract the audio.

  • Quicktime and .avi Files

Where do I go to get a plug-in for Quicktime to let me play .avi movie files? I went to the site where it says it might be, but I don't see anything for .avi files. Thanks for any help.
PS. I downloaded VLC, but everytime I right click the .avi file, go to open with, then pick VLC, it starts to open then closes.

Yes, that does work, but I'm viewing avi files over
the network, so it's hard to open VLC, then click
open file and go over the network to get the file.
There's got to be an easier way.
In VLC (because this'll come up again) just choose 'open Network' and supply the URL for the stream/resource (in some case you may have to dig into the source of the web page - or the one the link actually directs you to to find something that starts mms:// or RTSP: or similar).
This is particularly handy because in VLC - as in mplayer/ffmpegx and others) you can pipe the output to a file on disk in many cases (I hate streams. I like files.

  • Quicktime converting .avi files

    Hi
Most times when I try and play .avi files in Quicktime I get a message saying 'converting'.
It takes ages to do so and when or if it finally does convert the sound is severely out of sync.
I am running a new Macbook Pro and have Quicktime 10.3 and have installed Perian for codecs.
    Can anyone help?

Files encoded using modern and standards-based codecs such as H.263, H.264,  MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, JPEG, and Apple ProRes open in QuickTime Player without being converted. When opening media files that use older codecs, QuickTime Player in Mavericks automatically converts them into a new QuickTime movie.
You can use QuickTime Player 7 that plays many older media files without conversion, but it's recommended that you convert important older files to newer formats whenever possible. Download QuickTime Player 7 for Mavericks from here.

  • HT3775 Quicktime and AVI Files

Quicktime says it supports AVI videos, but when I try to play mine it says I need to download a codec?

There are multiple types of AVI encoders, and as such not all AVI files are recognised by QT.
The easiest thing to do is to move away from QT, and install VLC, which handles nearly all types of files.

  • Export AVI files to iMovie

    Hello, sorry for my english,
    I'm getting mad...
I have an avi file with following parameter:
    DivX 4 (Perian), 720 x 480, Milioni
MPEG Layer 3, Stereo, 48,000 kHz
    29,97 FPS
    it's about 600 MB
I would like to import it in iMovie, so I try to export it as iMovie doesn't like this format...
I really don't know what export format should I choose in order to:
    - Keep same quality
    - Keep quite same dimension
I tried so many ways but I get either urgly video quality or dimension like 60GB !!!
    What am I missing ?

iMovie is meant for camcorder imports = very few 'formats' supported, divx is not.
use Mpeg Streamclip (hey, Italian invention!! ) to convert into dv-stream, NTSC, 48kHz audio, 29.97 framerate.
1h of such an encoded file is about 13GBs..
don't forget to set iMovie to NTSC/29.97 fps either!
(changes take effect after relaunch of iMovie!)
otherwise, iM will convert it again.. to PAL ..
dv-stream is iM≤6 native format - as from miniDV camcorders..

  • Quicktime 10 .avi file format

I just got my new MacBook pro with the snow leopard system, and Quicktime 10.0 (90.3.1).
I can view the .avi movie, but have no sound... any suggestions on what to do to listen?

any suggestions on what to do to listen?
The normal solution when a file loads but does not play either the audio or video portion of the content is to determine what codec is not being supported, locate a Mac component version of that component, and install it on you system. In the case of AVI files, the Perian (free) component package will play most "common" audio/video format combinations currently in use on Windows platforms. However, be advised that this file format is old (i.e., the developer dropped official support for it a decade ago) and there are several codecs that have never been transcoded for use on the Mac or may only be available for OS 9 and/or non-Intel systems. In addition, if you already have Perian installed and then upgraded to Snow Leopard, it may be necessary to re-install the package to properly re-link the components for QT X.

  • Cs 5.5 low quality exported avi file

i imported a avi file and recorded audio clips to voice over the avi.  the original avi file was a screen capture using Camtasia software.  when i edited the avi file i had to make cuts and copy and past and sometimes stretch the avi to accomodate the voice overs.  so after all is said and done the exported file looks like crap and you can't read the words or make out the transistions.  How can i improve the quality of the avi on export?  please help

As Harm alludes, AVI can contain almost anything. Take a look at this FAQ Entry: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037?tstart=0
For Camtasia footage, see this article, and especially Jeff Bellune's comments in the linked threads: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2324919#2324919 There are many references to earlier versions of PrPro, but most will apply to CS 5 and later.

  • Quicktime playing AVI files

I have AVI files and quicktime cannot play these, can you please help me
    thanks

The installers from these two sites work in QT 6 but many using QT 7 and Tiger report problems with them.

Some QT 7 users report success with this decompressor although it will not play all avi files.

  • Export avi file

    Hi,
I'm trying to export an AVI file in fcp 4. But the result is that the movement is not 'flowing'. Wich settings do I have to use.
    Thanks,
    Mable
      Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I'm working in pal and I want to export a 20 min
movie as a AVI file. I tried several settings but the
movement isn't 'flowing'. What's the best setting:
Cinepak or DVpal, how many frames etc.
Cinepak is an old compression method. You are better off using one of MPEG-4 algorithms.
Since you are in Europe, the best frame rate will be probably 25. But it all depends on what you are exactly working on and how your client uses it.
I tried to play the .AVI on a Mac and a PC, and on
both computers the movie wasn't playing smoothly.
    Simply, reduce the video bitrate.

  • Is there a way to export .avi files to .mp4 en masse in Quicktime Pro?

    Hiya.
What I've been doing for some time now is taking the .avi movie files my Canon camera creates, and exporting them as h264 .mp4 files which cuts the file size by more than half with minimal quality loss. But at this moment, I have almost 100 video files that I would like to do and this process would be much, much, better if I could que them up.
Can you do this in Quicktime Pro and if not, another program?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
This can also be done with SimpleMovieX.
    http://www.aeroquartet.com/SimpleMovieX/
Note that I'm the developer of this application. It may not be as free as MPEG Streamclip, but at least it's supported.
