Quicktime only plays some of my movies

I've taken a lot of movies with my digital camera (all avis) The older ones play fine but the newer ones show a blank white screen and play nothing. When first opened I'm told theres a compatibility error and to download a component http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html?os=OSX&ctype=73646563&c subtype=6d730050 Which one is needed to fix this error. Am I suppose to download all of them?

sounds great. i downloaded the stream clip. since i am new to this i just wanted to know what format i should be changing the file to so quicktime plays it without messing up the quality or size of the video. what format should they be?

  • Ipod Mini will only play some songs

My ipod mini has 43 songs. It will only play some of my songs. The other songs won't even play a single second. I've had some success with restoring via the ipod updater but it keeps coming back. Help?

I've already written to Apple, several times. They sent an auto-reply expressing sympathy that I couldn't find where I had downloaded my iTunes, and directing me to the correct folder...not exactly a helpful answer.
I'm using whatever software came with the blue mini last August when I bought it. I can't be positive, but it seems that the only iPod software updates since then have been related to the shuffle, the nano, ot the new iPod (video), or a system bugs (Tiger) which I don't have yet.
What would have made iTunes stop recognizing the system and the iTunes version associated with the music I bought? What prevents iTunes, at some future point, from suddenly not recognizing my right to play music I paid for and/or insisting that I upgrade something which had been working just fine--until I went online?
Don't get me wrong--I've had Apples for almost 20 years. I have been a fervent supporter of Apples, have referred many people to Macs over the years, and have no intention of using Windows....Maybe that kind of loyalty is what gives the impression that I'll put up with whatever happens, unfair or not. A more accurate interpretation, however, would be that I'll just keep one Mac offline all the time so I can choose what software to upgrade, and when.
But this is an iPod forum...and I digress...
Thank you for your attempt to get to the bottom of this.

  • Quicktime only playing audio

Downloaded some videos from my gfriends video camera & all QT plays is the audio. Tells me that I may not have the components needed to play videos. They are .mov files. She has a newer mac & they play on hers. I downloaded the latest version of QT and it still only plays the audio.
Info tells me that the codecs are MPEG-2 SD Camcorder, Integer (Little Endian), Timecode.
I'm lost on what to do.

Dear KQK, I'm running Quicktime 7.5.5 and I don't get any sound when playing back some of my AVI files I downloaded from a file sharing network. About 1 in 10 has no sound. If you can help me with this problem, I will gladly buy your PDF file about Quicktime. Godspeed

  • QuickTime only plays its audio through my interface

I installed the Windows Media plug-in for QuickTime and I can now stream and preview content I could not have before. However, for some reason, the streaming content I wish to listen to (audio from a radio station) only plays through my audio interface.
I would visit the web page that has the streaming content and their little commercial with video plays fine through my internal speakers. However, once the content I want to see starts playing, for some reason it plays through my audio interface connected via USB. The thing is, not only have I made sure that the audio preferences are set to 'internal speakers,' but at some point the content I want to hear actually played through my internal speakers! What am I doing wrong?

That's weird! The content won't even play if I try unplugging the USB connection to my audio interface. It says "Unknown Error -2004."

  • Apple TV 2 won't play some of my movies

I ran into a problem yesterday when trying to play a movie for my kids.  The movie in question was Despicable Me, which was downloaded through iTunes as part of a "BluRay-DVD-Digital Copy" package that I purchased.  When I select the movie from the list on the ATV I get the "an error occurred loading this content" message and it won't play.  When I try to send the movie from my iMac to the ATV through Airplay I get the same message on the Mac and the ATV.  I checked the info on the movie and saw that it was Fairplay Version 2.  So I checked some other movies that I downloaded in the same way and saw that they too were Fairplay Version 2.  None of them would play either.  So I thought I had found the problem until I tried to play Cars, which I ripped from my DVD to iTunes using Handbrake.  I get the same message when I try to play that movie but there is no indication of Fairplay Version 2.  All the movies will play just fine in iTunes on my Mac, and other movies that I ripped with Handbrake play just fine as well.  Has anyone found a solution to this problem?  I searched the Discussions and other online forums but can find no help.
    Hardware, software, etc.:
ATV 2 with latest OS version
    iTunes 10.2.2
    iMac running 10.6.7
Time Capsule with LAN connection to Mac and WiFi to ATV
    Thanks.
    Kevin

OK, I think I just figured something out.
Under Settings/Audio & Video/Audio Languages, I noticed that Chinese & Russian aren't available. All the movies I've been having trouble with have either Chinese or Russian dialog tracks.
I opened one of my movies in Quicktime and selected Show Movie Properties.
I selected Stereo/Other Settings. The Language was properly set as Traditional Chinese. I reset it to English.
I next went to Surround/Other Settings and did the same, Traditional Chinese to English. This wouldn't apply unless you have two audio tracks in your file.
I re-saved the file. Quicktime will append your file with .mov. Changing it back to .m4v or .mp4 seems to make it unplayable.
Added the file back into iTunes and suddenly it's perfectly playable on the ATV
So it seems that ATV won't properly play a file that's tagged with a language that's not available in the Audio Languages menu.
Does anyone know of a way of changing this language tag (?) without having to go through the trouble of opening/editing/resaving it in Quicktime?

  • ITunes does only play some songs...?!

    Hey,
    I have the following problem:
My iTunes 8 just changed "over night". Yesterday I could play and listen to every Song in my library. But these days I can only play a few songs out of my library!
The most songs are just not playing. To be sure I tried the VLC player to play the songs, iTunes coulndt play. And VLC coulnd play them too.
So why can I only play just these few songs?
And interesting fact I discovered: The songs iTunes cant play have no information about wether its "stereo" or not also if it has an "ID3 Tag" or wether its Layer 3 or some other.
I thank you very much for help!
    greeting,
    Richard

delete the song from the library and redownload the song again
if you are unsure how to redownload the song, follow these steps
    download previosly purchase content
    hope this helps:)

  • Quicktime not playing any of my movies

i've run software update recently and now Quicktime won't play any of my movies (that used to work just fine...). Now it opens fine, but if i try to open a movie (avi, mpeg4, whatever...) it just "beach balls" and i have to Force Quit (it shows not responding...). Does anyone know how i can fix this? it's so annoying!

There may be an encoding issue with the files. Can you play them if you download the VLC media player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html)?

  • Why is quicktime 10 playing my exported widescreen movie as 4.3??

Basically, i hooked my dads new canon hg10 HD camcorder (1440x1080) and imported some clips to play with in FCP 6. The software very kindly told me that the new sequence would need changing to adapt to the new video which it did very nicely. So everything was spot on in the canvas, proper widescreen HD etc.
When i came to export i left everything on 'current settings etc' and hit save, soon as it was exported i opened quicktime 10 to view it and it was basically viewing it as 4.3 BUT when i opened it with 'REAL PLAYER' it was the correct 16.9 format.
I also went to the sequence settings and ticked the 'anamorphic' option and still the same result
    Any ideas anyone?
    Cheers

Im having this same issue. When I EXPORT (from FCP 6) a 16:9 movie and view in QT X, it displays it as 720x480 and not 853x480. WHY? Everyones fix is to view through QT 7. That is not a fix for me as I do not have the install disk. Also its not a fix at all, just a way around.
Raw files from the FCP capture scratch are fine. 853x480. Only when I EXPORT from FCP does go to 720x480. Even videos I EXPORTED before I upgraded to Snow Leopard and QT X are not displaying correctly. They did before. Ive even opened them on another machine running Leopard in QT 7 and its fine. So to me, its QT X. Everything worked fine before I upgraded to Snow Leopard and QT X.
    Anyone have any insight?

  • Quicktime only play one file at a time

I would like to use QuickTime player to play mp3s. when I play a file and then open another it opens another instance of Quicktime and both files play at the same time.
Is there a terminal command to only have one instance of quicktime at a time?

Is there a terminal command to only have one instance of quicktime at a time?
Not a big Terminal user, but as far as I know, the answer would be "No!" Nor does the QT Player (QT X) have any preferences that would help here.
I would like to use QuickTime player to play mp3s. when I play a file and then open another it opens another instance of Quicktime and both files play at the same time.
With the QT Player (QT X) the specified media player, you have three basic options:
Create a reference playlist or pseudo-playlist,
Create a standalone "album" file, or
Create a an Automator script that will play any group of folders and/or individual files dropped to it.
For instance, if you have QT 7 install on your system and is is keyed for "Pro" use, then you can use it to create a "reference" (pseudo-playlist) or "standalone" (album" file that will play the content you add in the order you add it to the player. The "reference" file is very small since it only tells the QT Player to play the source files located else where on your system but is not, generally speaking, "transportable" since files are easily "orphaned" by inexperienced users. On the other hand, the "standalone" contains all of the original data stored internally and can be move or shared across systems and media devices having compatible media players. Both types of files are fixed with respect to both the content and its playback order.
An automator "drop" script works like the playlist or pseudo-playlist file described above but has the advantage of allowing the user to grab and combination of files and/or folders and play them sequentially in the order (I believe) in the order they are selected. Its major disadvantage is that the user must select, drag, and drop the set of files and/or folders each time he or she wishes to play the content whereas playlists, "pseudo-playlists," and "albums" play the same files in the same order each time they are opened.
Most users prefer an alternative solution—that of using an alternative player. Most use iTunes since it also "manages" the media content. Music albums are, in and of themselves, playlists. However, users can also create smart or manual custom playlists as desired. These playlists are "reference" playlists by nature but can be exported, burned, streamed, or sync'd to mobile devices if desired by the user and thus, to my mind, offers the most available options to the average user.
Another alternative would be to use a third-party media player having "playlist" capabilities. One popular example would be the VLC media player. Folders, files, albums, etc. can be dropped to the app player window and automatically begin playing in the order dropped. Further, the playlist can be saved as an M3U playlist file that can be recalled by VLC (or iTunes) later if desired. Unfortunately these M3U files are not QT X or QT 7 compatible. (NOTE: The M3U file, like the QT 7 "reference" file mentioned above, merely contains pointers to data stored elsewhere on your system and any change to the relative navigation path can orphan the resource data.)

  • Media Smart DVD, not that smart.... Will only play some blu ray, not all.

When I get a computer with a blu ray player I expect it to play blu ray discs... all of them. It works with some but not all.
The discs it does not work with, what happens is it will ask me "Do you want to check for updates" and there will be a box to check yes or no. In the background it will say disc is ready to be played, just push play. Easy right? HECK NO.
If you check yes, it will do the little wait symbol and process the request checking for updates, then come right back and ask you again, a never ending circle of asking to check for updates. If you push NO, it will go away, then you have a couple options, one is open up the menu and see if there is actually an update... nope. no update there. the other option is do what it says and push play since it thinks the blu ray is ready to play. Once I push play it starts to think and pops up that "Do you want to check for updates" again. It is so frustrating. HEY HP, FIX THIS DUMB CIRCULAR TRAP THAT WONT LET ME WATCH BLU RAY.
And this is a major motion picture blu ray disc from block buster video. Not some copied random disc. So, I know it aint the disc.

I am running into this same issue. I have a HPE-180t with a BD-RE BH20L Blu-Ray drive. I put in 'Scott Pilgrim vs The World' and got a message that asked if i wanted to update, to which I clicked 'NO' and then after about 5 sec of it seaching the drive it replied with "Format Not Supported". I ejected and reinserted a few times and tried another Blu-Ray movie (also The Expendables) and it gave me the same message.
I searched the internet and found a forum message with steps to uninstall the DVD portion of MediaSmart and reinstall using Recovery Manager, but after the uninstall now Recovery Manager will not open to reinstall HP MediaSmart DVD.
I then attempted a Windows System Restore to a few days prior, which went through the motions, but then had a failed message upon reboot.
I then ran the HP Support Assistant > Troubleshoot > Utilities> Storage Devices> Optical Drives and ran the test on the BH20L drive which failed in recognizing any Blu-Ray media (movie or blank BD-R). I had just used this drive a week ago to archive some photos onto the blank Blu-Ray media mentioned without issue.
Please help HP, this is really a nuisance for this seriously robust machine.
[edit]...Also I went out to the website for my system looking for any updates and the only one I installed was a BIOS update dated November 2010.

  • Quicktime only plays sound in Safari

When I open a Quicktime file in Safari the only thing that comes up is the sound-file bar. I have checked that Quicktime file should play directly i Settings. This problem started after an update of Quicktime some months ago.

You can trash the file from your Desktop.
A new one will be made the next time you update QuickTime and it may fix your issues. If not, you know where to look for a quick fix.

  • Why can't I play some of my movies?

I have a number of movies in my library that I bought from iTunes. I can't play half of them, despite having bought them a while ago and watching them several times. The window opens when I click on them, but then it just sits there, and it won't play the movie. But others are fine. Is there a way I can fix this? Is it because of iTunes 10.4?

    Hi,
i seem to be having the same problem with my iphone as well, its got to be something to do with the update. The only thing i can suggest is keeping an eye on the itunes for another update and see what happeneds from there.
it is quite annoying for me as my iphone is my main music device for my car......... can anyone please help?????

  • Quicktime only plays audio from video files!

When looking at quicktime files, such as on Apple Trailers, HD files work, but the standard ones won't play, just the audio. There isn't even a blank screen or anything, just the audio bar!
How can I fix this problem?

Some fixed it by reinstalling the latest Flash Player 9.0 r47
