R600: MXP or FXP

Just purchased an R600 camcorder (consumer entry level). Shooting AVCHD there is a choice between MXP and FXP. I understand that the tradeoff is between quality and file size and that storage is cheap, but I wonder whether it makes sense for shoot at the higher bit rate if I'm unlikely to burn Blu Ray disks and would just like high quality YouTube posts to share with family. (My son's piano recital, e.g., is next event to be recorded.) The cost of the larger file to me is transfer time and sluggishness in editing, or maybe even that is not a concern. Advice is welcome. Thanks in advance.

If storage is not an issue and the editing software can handle the file without being sluggish I would shoot at the highest resolution possible. Downconverting the video, to me, is the better option as upconverting the video to a higher resolution is not practical. I'm not convinced that it is even possible since the additional file information is simply not there. This may result in a higher quality video even when it is exported as something other than a Blu-ray file. I would only shoot with a smaller file size if I knew beyond the shadow of a doubt that I would never want or need the higher quality video. I'm not saying the FXP quality wouldn't be good enough for what you want to do.

Help with getting a better understanding on how APEX submits its pages

I have implemented jquery with my app and have just applied the jquery UI plugins.
I have the jquery UI dialog function working which gives the users some options. Now as an example, I have a cancel and a continue button. If the user clicks cancel it simply stops the page from submitting. Which works perfectly however, I cannot get the continue button to carry on with the request.
I gather that I will need to determine what the href was of the link/button that was clicked before the dialog box appears.
I know Apex uses a javascript function call doSumit() which simply submits the page but what does it use for other href like links to other pages?

The problem is that you're taking a camcorder format that Premiere Elements is able to work with and converting it to a format that it can NOT work with.
That Canon camcorder produces AVCHD video. You should shoot any video you want to edit in Premiere Elements only in MXP or FXP mode. Then, when you're ready to edit the video in Premiere Elements, you should set up a project for AVCHD 1920x1080 stereo. (Unless you're shooting in 5.1 audio. This cam shoots in a number of formats.)
DO NOT CONVERT YOUR VIDEO BEFORE YOU PUT IT IN PREMIERE ELEMENTS.
You can then use these specs to output high-quality video for YouTube.

PE9 crashes all the time while editing on Mac OS X

Maybe I have wrong system settings in the editing program, because every time I make the smallest change, eg. add text, the PE9 crashes. I have to render the work area after each text addition and sometimes the program crashes 5 or more times before it finishes rendering. I'm spending more time restarting the program than actually editing and we're not talking about anything fancy, special effects, layers or such, but just adding a little title here and there... :-(
Could you please help, this is driving me mad and my editing is not proceding anywhere...
The computer I'm working with is:
MacBookPro6,2
Prosessor: Intel Core i5
Prosessor speed: 2,53 GHz
Memory: 4 Gt
The material I'm editing has been recorded with a Full HD-videocamera Canon Legria HFS200 1920 x 1080, but with SD quality.
The project setting I have at the moment are HDV 1080i. Something must be off because the Mac Book Pro should have enough power to run the PE9-program.

There are no red lines when editing just footage. But as soon as I add a
title or a transition the problems begin.
I've been fighting with this issue now while waiting for help from you guys
and I noticed that if I only render one little area at the time PE doesn't
crash as often...

them before shooting more material.
However, the material I'm working with now I can't affect anymore, unless I
can change some settings in the PE project? This is work related stuff, the
material can't be shot again and the DVD is expected to be ready as soon as
possible... So do you have an advice for the problem at hand?

Katia, the reason you need to render all of the time is because you are
using the wrong project settings.

Importing AVCHD

Just bought a Canon HF R10 and imported into iMovie. Been shooting at the highest quality (FXP, or something like that), and still struggling to get a quality DVD burned, but my first question is about the import.
1. Our use is home movies which will be burned to DVDs. We have 2 hi-def TVs, but don't even have a blu-ray machine yet. I tend to import things in highest quality (which is "full" in this case) just to keep my options open. But is this silly for home DVDs? Should I just use "large"? Opinions on this appreciated.
2. I notice that iMovie converts the AVCHD into quicktime (not sure if it's AIC or H.265) upon import. Great, it then works with iMovie! As for quality, are there views as to whether this conversion is being done well? Or should I consider an alternate converter outside of iMovie?
Bottom line is that I'd like to have excellent video quality, even if they're just our silly home videos.

I'm not an authority on the subject, but I've run into similar issues with Canon HF 20, AVCHD files, MXP or FXP (highest 1920x1080 quality modes of the camera) and iMovie 08.
My camera is recognized by iMovie, and imports the files, which iMovie will always (to my knowledge) bring in as AIC format (Apple Int. Codec). Supposedly this is necessary for iMovie to be able to do all the editing. This process will also bloat up the file sizes massively. Example... a 47 MB file on the camera will become 221 MB or more in AIC after iMovie pulls it in (using the "original" 1920x1080 import setting). This also takes roughly twice the footage length in time to convert. Also, importing MXP and FXP resulted in almost the same final file size once iMovie put it into AIC format, so might as well use MXP on the camera for the best quality.
Using "large" mode (960x540) for importing into iMovie took roughly real time (40 sec for a 38 sec clip), and keep the file size down (115 MB clip on camera became 134 MB clip on the computer after iMovie imported into "large" format).
However, all of my AVCHD clips imported into iMovie using "large" format import all had a "sped up" feel when playing it back. Very odd. Just like the fight scenes in Russell Crows' Gladiator movie. It was very subtle, but still noticeable. I don't know what the differences between iMovie 08 and 09 are for all this, but perhaps iMovie 09 can fix the "sped up" issue.
As for burning to DVDs, I haven't gotten that far yet, but I think I've read there are some hoops to jump through.

The FlamingoHD is suppose to store AVCHD imported movies in their native format and functions as a library. However, it took forever to build it's "filmstrip" for me, whatever that is (I still don't know). And I could not figure out how to simply play the clips from this program.
VoltaicHD is suppose to let you convert/share your AVCHD movies, and RevolverHD is suppose to let you disk burn HD. I haven't used either of them.
FYI, from what I've been told, converting from AVCHD to MP4 h.264, even with a high bitrate, will offer superb quality with relatively small file sizes, but there will be quality loss. So it's best to keep the conversions to a minimum. I ran into this question with the idea of converting AVCHD into something iMovie could recognize.
I'm not sure how iMovie AIC is compared to this, but I suspect it's similar. Almost the same quality, but there might be loss, since it is a conversion. To my knowledge, even Final Cut Express uses AIC, and Final Cut Pro uses its own format, but it still converts it from AVCHD to something else.
If you are looking to simply PLAY the AVCHD files in their native format on the Mac, I uncovered a great little utility called MOVIST that can do it:

If you are looking to convert AVCHD files into something even easier to play on Mac (rather than the MOVIST route), you can use ClipWrap utility to convert them into DV format (stan.def.). This would simply be for viewing on your computer, not for editing for high quality burning. ClipWrap can rewrap AVCHD into MOV too, but it didn't work well for me.
Finally, iMovie has some issues with interlacing, but I haven't read up on it yet. I get the impression it drops video information.

The final solution might be to use software that works with AVCHD files natively. The only inexpensive (cough, if you call it that) one I know of is the $800 (or $299 upgrade) Premiere Pro Creative Suite 5 coming out in May. No transcoding or rewrapping. Just raw AVCHD goodness.
My hope is that iMovie 10 will be AVCHD native, but I doubt it.
One thing to note is that AVCHD is native to Windows 7. So you could setup Win7 on Boot Camp and use a PC program to edit (premiere elements 8, etc.) then put the final products on your Mac side for playback.

Hello, i am a German guy, so i am sorry that my english is not very well.
I got the Canon HF S 10 from Japan, so its an NTSC one. For Cutting i am using Final Cut Pro. I want to produce online Videos in the best possible Quality.
My Problem is, that i dont know witch settings i should take for best Quality.I already tryed much. The Quality is good if i dont move the camera. If i move it the Video becames very bad Quality.
The Cam has these possibilitys:
Frame Rate: 60i (Standard), PF30, PF24.
24Mbps (MXP), 17Mbps (FXP), 12Mbps XP+,7Mbps (SP), 5Mbps (LP)
I dont know with import Settings i should use for Final Cut.
Could you please help me to find the right settings?

Does anyone of you use a HD-camcorder like Canon Legria HF G10 and cut films with Final Cut Express 4.0.1. I did not buy this product yet but ask before. Now I have 4GB RAM and i5 MacBooK Pro. Do any problems exist using FCE having made films with this camera?
I save the films als QuickTime films (mov) and create DVDs with iDVD.
Will the data be too many if I make films with such a camera (HD) so that 1 hour of film cannot be burned to one DVD (or if is not necessary to film with such a good quality because in iDVD the film looses its quality?).

I was able to find this info regarding the camera:
AVCHD 1080/50i. 1080/25P (Maximum AVCHD 24Mbps)
Recording Modes
MXP 24Mbps / FXP 17Mbps / XP+ 12Mbps / SP 7Mbps / LP 5Mbps
The 1080/50i (interlaced) modes will work with FCE. PAL in this case. 60i is NTSC.

Canon HF S20 and Express log and transfer issues

I know another thread addressed this, but there was no solution (that I found).
I get the red octagon with the ! sign in the "status" column when I try to put clips in the queue from my Canon Vixia HFS20. I'm guessing this means FCE doesn't support my brand new camera, which probably means I have to shell out the grand for FCP- which I can't because I just bought the mac, express, and the camera (broke).
any suggestions?

Setting Correct Sequence Presets with footage from Canon XA10? Always showing 29.97fps Confused!

I just got the Canon XA10 and new at Video editing. If I shoot in Cinamatic mode (24fps) or Auto (60i) etc.. When I import to my computer and Premier Pro it is showing my setting at 29.97 FPS on anything I shoot no matter what frame rate I shot in.
I called Canon and they said not to worry that is is shooting in correct mode (nice answer) but has something to do with the way it converts it for NTS compliant, etc.. but I am confused that anything I import to computer and Premier Pro always show 29.97fps no matter if I shot it in 24, 60fps etc..
Can someone clarify this for me as why it always shows this and what presets I should be using if I shot it in "Cinama" mode 24fps but it is showing 29.97fps in Premier pro?
I have quality set in SP
So when I import to Premier Pro or my computer my meta data is always showing no matter waht frame rate I set in camera when shooting. Running Windows.

I'm about to purchase the XA10 also and use it with PPro CS5.5 so I'm very interested in your questions - and the forum's answers. Are you using CS5 or CS5.5?
Allthough I can't help answer your question yet, I can confirm and add to pabalsamo's advice - if you want to capture full HD video quality, you'll need to switch to MXP or FXP mode. These are the only two settings that allow full HD 1920x1080 video recording and the picture quality is outstanding. However, if the XA10 is like the HFS21 (my current camera) you may have problems when it comes to editing MXP footage. To be safe, I usually stick with FXP and I'm very happy with the results. The default setting on your XA10 may be 'SD' (I'm not sure why Canon does this) which is why you found yourself shooting in it... I might be naive suggesting this, but I'm wondering if shooting in SD has anything to do with the problem your having? Maybe just to eliminate, try shooting in FXP, 24P and see how Adobe recognizes it...

How to get HD footage

I just purchased a Canon Vixia HF200. I have done some initial filming to test out making a quick movie. I noticed that when I watch the footage on my HD TV (from the camera), it looks great. But when I import it into Premiere Elements 8 and render it, the footage is not so good. I am rather new to this so I have a few quesitons.
I assume since I filmed it in HD, in order to get that HD quality I have to burn it to a blue ray? (I dont have one) or can I get HD quality on a DVD in another fashion? Do I need a special HD driver to burn HD footage?
I was reading the forums and saw that you can export the footage to various formats using presests. But how do I determine what the footage was filmed in. I check the property's of the clip I filmed and I dont see what it indicates the type of footage?
Anoter post I read talked about taking HD content and downgrading it to SD content but again it talks about various presets based on the type of footage I shot but I dont know how to determine that after the fact.
Any help would be appreciated.

About your Organizer question
If you are in the Elements Organizer
a. right click the thumbnail, and click on Update Thumbnail (Make sure the "Details" is checked in that area.
b. right click the thumbnail and select Properties.
If you are in the Premiere Elements Organizer Window
a. right click the thumbnail, and click on Update (Make sure the "Details" is checked in that area.
After you bring you media to the Timeline
a. go to Project View, right click the video file there, and select Properties from the list that opens
It might be to your advantage to bring your video into a project prel Organizer first so that it gets in the Elements Organizer that way. Try that first and we can modify the plan afterwards.
Your "How do I tell what type of video I shot...." question suggests that you are jumping into these programs/equipment without doing your homework. I will grant you that the Canon User Manual Start Up section does leave much to be desired, but you need to take time to dig into that manual or question Canon about it's product.

I went online to the Canon web site and went on a hunt through that manual. Apparently, your camcorder has five modes:
MXP and FXP mode for 1920 x 1080 (which would be considered Full AVCHD and be characterized by square pixels)
and
XP, SP, and LP mode for 1440 x 1080 (which would be consider non Full AVCHD and be characterized by HD anamorphic which stretches the video 16:9 for display after encoding).
The above is must know information, so please read that user manual to take full advantage of your very powerful camcorder.
You ask again about getting the "best quality from my nice HD camera". And again I refer you to my post #15 in the link that I cited previously. That gives detailed details on how to take advantage of your Full AVCHD either putting your AVCHD on a DVD disc in Blu-Ray format or burning the AVCHD Timeline to Blu-Ray disc in Blu-Ray format. There is a lot to read and learn and then decide what you want to do and how you want to view it.
Consider the following plan to get you into this type of creative project:
1. Do your homework with regard to your Canon camcorder, Premiere Elements 8
2. With your camcorder, record a 1 to 2 minute AVCHD clip, using the Full AVCHD setting of MXP or FXP.
3. Open Premiere Elements 8 and set the project preset (new project dialog) to NTSC AVCHD Full HD1080i30.
4. Bring your AVCHD clip from its save location on your computer hard drive into Premiere Elements 8 via its Get Media/Files & Folders.
5. Drag the AVCHD clip from the Media Area to the Timeline Video Track 1/Audio Track 1.
6. This time we are going to bypass Create Menus and go directly to Share/Disc/Disc and create a DVD-VIDEO which you can play with your DVD player. Put your DVD-R disc in your DVD burner drive tray. Setup the burn area
a. put a check mark next to Fit Contents to Available Space
b. select the preset NTSC Widescreen Dolby DVD.
c. hit burn
DVD-VIDEO has a standardized format, so your video will end up as 720 x 480 with a 16:9 flag to stretch the video on display after encoding.
Let us see what that looks like.
When you get beyond this very mini test run, you will soon discover that editing AVCHD in Premiere Elements is very resource consuming and needy. Then computer resources and optimization will probably become an issue. Take a look at the recent thread of cyber and how he dealt with that issue.
There are a lot of people here who will help, but you need explore, experiment, and read. You will do fine. We can talk further if you want later.

HG21 and FCP Settings

Hey there!
I've looked through some of the other topics on here and was wondering if I might be able to get some direct input from users who use the HG21 with FCP/FCE.
I tend to shoot in either MXP or FXP mode, with 24p on and often with cinemode on as well.
I know I have to log and transfer but I am not sure what settings to start and end with.
I had also read somewhere to use the CineTools Reverse Telecine.
But my footage seems to look... well.... crappy and really interlaced when I go to export it.
The best results I think I have had was making the export video size a smaller HD setting like 1280x720. I feel like I am missing something and should be able to get better results.
I want to get a better understanding of the workflow and not only what settings to use but why.
Sorry if this is something people have covered ad-naseum before but I am not really finding the kind of info I want or need to understand it better. I HAVE googled it and the best results were kind of in here.
So please, if you have the HG21 (or one of the similar vixias) and a lot of patience for newbie HD questions, I would greatly appreciate your help. If you can share samples that might be really helpful.

Hi there Robert,
Like you, I use the HG21. I always shoot in MXP mode, which corresponds to a bitrate of 24Mbit/second at a frame size of 1920x1080 and a frame rate of 60i or 30p. I've found that for exporting to the web you should shoot in 30p mode, but for DVD the interlacing is important to the final result.
First of all, FCE doesn't support 24fps content so to edit that you'd need FCP. In FCE, you need to set your Easy Setup to the preset that matches the format you're working in (in my case the +AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i60,+) then once you have logged and transferred you need to edit it in a sequence that matches your media. If you use any other sequence the AIC footage needs to first be rendered out in that frame size which will also sacrifice quality.
When you're done editing your footage in a sequence that matches your media, make sure to render everything out (Option-R) before exporting. If you're exporting for burning to a DVD, simply export via +File > Export > Quicktime Movie+ to get a lossless video file from your original sequence. If you're exporting for the web, you'll need to use Quicktime Conversion. I often follow [Vimeo's Compression Guidelines|http://vimeo.com/help/compression] if I'm going to be exporting to Vimeo or YouTube. Until recently - when Vimeo started supporting 1920x1080 video - I always set the frame size for my final product down to 1280x720 to further accommodate the website I was uploading to. Make sure to deinterlace if you're exporting a 60i video for the web, because otherwise it will look pretty bad.

FXP generated in CS 5 , Not working in CS 5.5

I have been working in Flash Catalyst CS 5 since Feb 2011. My same project FXP weighs to 3.9MB till now, with a few kb swf splash at startup. It was working perfectly fine till date 04 August 2011. Now when I trashed CS 5 & Install CS 5.5 to work in, that same file is not opening into it. First it asks for update that I had worked in Older version, so it needs to update that file. When I Okayed that, in next step when it tries to load the project file it took long enough time to load 80% and after a while that loading panel disappeared and that time when it needs to load file in Flash Catalyst, the software use to stay blank. Means that loading panel didn't load anything in Flash Catalyst CS 5.5.
On other side, when I tries to unload my library i.e. remove few components to make it more lighter, it use to give errors while loading that this file has errors , you need to fix them in Flash Builder, which I dont use for creating my graphical work.
Can anybody help me with this problem, so my FXP file runs smooth in CS 5.5 too as it is working in CS 5.

I just found out I can't install my MXP extensions

I really would like to wrtie something useful and meaningful, and maybe even ask a question or two. But I apologize in advance if it just turns out to be a rant. There's a bigger picture here, and that involves the overall direction the internet has taken in the last few years. Ok, I do have a question, but let me rant just a little first.
I recently went from CS4 to Creative Cloud. Inbetween, I tried out a few trial versions of CS products, and all was fine with my extensions. I now have several CC apps installed, time to start working again, only to find out the whole MXP issue. It didn't take long to find out what I have to do, so that shoulnd't be a problem. But then again, I won't know for sure until I actually attempt converting and installling the extensions.
This practice of updating and upgrading that force us into additional purchases - both hardware and software is just out of control. It's all under the guide of providing a better overall experience, and I can go along with that to a degree.
So the first question requires speculation - when it comes to this change to the new extension format - WHY?? And if there is a way to convert an MXP, why isn't that just built into the CC extension manager?
The second question is more philosophical. What is the correct attutude a developer supposed to adopt? I know that we have to use the tools we've been given, or find something else to do. But we don't really have any options, especially when it comes to web development, and especially for those who do rely on extensions.
It also used to be, just stay with the older version if upgrading is impractical or unaffordale. But that''s that even possible any more. CS4 has barely any support for HTML5, and without that, may as well hang it up.
I know I sound like just another complainer, and for now I am - but I'm just one small voice is a larger chorus. It used to be all about Microsoft. Now it's Adove, and, yes, even Apple are targets. I read te blogs ad forums, and I know I'm not alone. But with all those voices out there, nothing changes. Wait, that's not right - it does change - for the worse.
Part two of the second question - does anyone know of any issue that anyone of these big companies have responded to because of some sort of consumer or user activism, suggestions, anything other than legislation? I don't know of a single instance.

For the sake of clarity, I would like to mention that during my seeking and finding I've yet to find the specifics on why the file formates were changed, other than the ZXP format has the capability of including more features.
Also, while the major extension providers have upgraded their products to ZXP versions, some of them are paid upgrades and part of bundles, so it can get a little pricey. The extensions will convert successfully, but get the database error during install in EM CC. Even with that, they still show up in DW CC and function properly, except perhaps for one or two of the features. Hopefully, when I do purchase the compatbile extension, I"ll be able to install it, as the one I installed doesn't display in the EM and therefore doesn't provide a way to uninstall!
On the other side of the coin, I've converted some extensions, and installed them without a hitch, they show up in DW but just don't work at all.

Preview and Thumb image in MXP Upload

I've noticed that other content types allow users to upload a
Preview and a Thumbnail image when uploading their extensions. It
seems that this option is only unavailable to MXP extensions.
Is there any reason why we cannot upload these images with

If you are using a Container you just leave your image files in the home directory of your web application. And forget this idea about database. It´s not necessary in this case.
To display the images just use HTML, <img src="url">.

Network stream fxp excess memory usage and poor performance

I'm trying to stream some datas à highspeed rate (3 channels à 1Mbytes/s) from my 9030 to my windows host. Because i don't need to use data on the rt side, i choose to forward FXP <+-,24,5> to my host throug a network stream.
To avoid data loose i choose to use a wide buffer of 6000000 with this buffer my memory usage grow from 441mo to 672Mo and my rio is unable to stream the data.
With sgl or double, memory usage is 441 to 491Mo and datas can be streamed continusly.
Anyone have encoutered this problem?

SQL Developer is java based and relies on the jvm's memory management.
I'm not aware of any memory leaks as such, but memory tends not to be returned to the system.
Queries which return large return sets tend to use a lot of memory (SQL Developer has to build a java table containing all the results for display).
You can restrict the maximum memory allocated by modifying settings in in <sqldeveloper>\ide\bin\ide.conf
The defaults are -
AddVMOption -Xmx640M
AddVMOption -Xms128M

Re: Disabled wireless connection on Win 7 - Portege R600

I have installed Windows 7 (clean installation) on notebook Toshiba Portege R600 and the built in 3G modem doesn't work.
When I start Toshiba Wireless Manager it writes "Radio is turned off. To acitvate, turn on notebook switch.".
I am sure that this switch is on, but switching of wireless connections using Fn+F8 doesn't work so maybe it is off but I cannot enable it. I have installed all updated drivers like: Wireless manager, Wlan driver,
BT Stack, etc.
Does anyone have any idea?

I want to enable 3G modem. As I understand the HW switch is to enable all wireless equipments, ie 3G, Wifi, bluetooth. And then Fn+F8 enables or disables each of it. But Fn+F8 does not provide any function. And as I realized, bluetooth don't work as well. I suppose that currently wifi is enabled and 3G and bluetooth disabled, but the Fn+F8 doesn't work to enable it.
