RAC 10.2 Failure Behavior
Im doing HA testing over a RAC 10.2.0.1, i want to know what would be the normal behavior of rac services like server, asm, nodeapps, vips and database.
tests
- public interface lost
- private interface lost
- one node restarted
- database crashed
example:
private interface lost: server rebooted, asm down, nodeapps down, database down, vips evicted to the other node

Hi Aman,
You are correct, node1 used for shared storage Disk1- make five raw partitions.
Okay, please tell me if I use another node and use as shared storage then how to connect these raw disk to RAC nodes. Please give the procedure. This shared storage node only PC; not NAS or other expensive storage.
Hi there,
Well, if you are using only two physical machines, chances to get the things done are small actually. The only option that I think you have is to configure NFS(which I believed I had suggested already) . Other than this, you need to find one more machine, may be of less computing power but should have sufficient storage and use the Openfiler software to use its storage as a shared storage.

Lowest node number rule in 2 nodes RAC when interconnect failure
Is it true that when a interconnect failure occurs in a two node cluster, lowest node number rule? Assume both the nodes can access the voting disk(s).
If true, any documentation or white pager to address more details?
Thanks in advance.
Limin. Is it true that when a interconnect failure occurs in a two node cluster, lowest node number rule? Well, I am not sure this could be true or not. Couple of times its been observed in our two node RAC Databases where each time one node evicted due to couple reasons (one of the reason was the time synchronization between the nodes) and surprisingly another time a node evicted without any valid reason too.

Put failure behavior in a non-transactional db?
Hi all,
I'm still getting to know the ropes here, so hopefully this isn't a stupid question. I'm still prototyping an application, and as such I haven't set my database to be transactional (learning one thing at a time). The app runs for quite a while, but eventually it tries to put an entity into a primary index that violates one of the secondary key constraints (uniqueness). The put() call throws an exception (properly showing KEYEXIST) but then all subsequent operations that I try to perform fail with a lock timeout (DeadlockException).
My guess is that some resource wasn't cleaned up after the exception since I'm not running transactionally (so no auto-commit), but I can't find any documentation to back that up. Am I likely to avoid this problem if I turn on transactions? If I don't, is there something in the API I can do to clean up after an exception in a non-transactional put?
Thanks!
Jeff AlexanderYou may want to check to make sure that you're not leaving a cursor open when an exception occurs. An open cursor will hold a lock. I recommend closing cursors in a finally block.
If a lock is held by mistake (either your mistake such as not closing a cursor, or a bug in JE), a deadlock may not be caused immediately because other operations may not need to lock the same record. To debug this, perhaps after receiving the KEYEXIST exception and closing cursors properly, you could try closing all Databases and the Environment. Environment.close will throw an exception if any locks were not released.
It would be nice if there were a way to query the number of outstanding locks, but I don't think we have a way to do that currently, without reaching into JE internals.

Hi All,
I am new to Oracle RAC 11g, facing a issue, Request all to help.
1) What is the instance id means which we get from gv$session in Oracle RAC setup?
2) What is differnce between Session failure and node failure?
3) If session fail, then client should connect to node1(to which session previously connected) or node2?
Thanks1) What is the instance id means which we get from gv$session in Oracle RAC setup?Instance ID is unique for each instance in clustered database.
2) What is differnce between Session failure and node failure?Session Failure - when the connection to an instance is lost, SESSION failover results only in the establishment of a new connection to another Oracle RAC node
Node Failure/Eviction - we can say hardware fails, the Cluster Manager reports the change in the cluster's membership to Global Resource Directory (GRD)
Resource directory which consists of both Global enqueue service & cache service
3) If session fail, then client should connect to node1(to which session previously connected) or node2?You have to configure in SERVICE. -
Corporate connectivity not working for some users
Hi,
I'm having an issue that started about a month ago but is getting worse. A select group of users are no longer able to connect using DirectAccess, even though these users have been using their computers for a few months without issue.
BACKGROUND:
-Windows 2008 R2 DirectAccess server
-Windows 7 x64 enterprise clients
-Most clients experiencing the issue have a newer laptop (Lenovo T440 with Intel 7260AC wireless), but the issue is not limited to this model. Also, I have 25+ other Lenovo T440 units that connect without issue to this day.
TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS:
I have tried disabling the various interfaces used for directaccess on these problem machines and have not been able to narrow it down. Essentially- I've noticed the IP-HTTPS interface shows deactivated, so I'll disable Teredo. This
usually allows the IP-HTTPS to show activated, and connectivity is restored. However, after 30 seconds to a few minutes, connectivity will once again drop. So I'll re-enable teredo (default, client, or enterprise client) and connectivity will kick
on for another brief period, but drops again shortly after.
I have confirmed that during these short periods of connectivity working, the wf.msc shows connectivity using NTLM and Kerberos, but the clients just can't seem to stay connected on any interface.
However, in the wf.msc when the clients are not functioning, I only ever see one NTLM entry.LOGS:
Below is a directaccess client log pulled from a non-functioning client before making any changes or any testing. Feel free to ask for the rest of the log if needed-- I have put in place holders for information that may be sensitive. Thank you!!
RED: Corporate connectivity is not working.
Windows is unable to relocationve corporate network names. Please contact your administrator if this problem persists.

Rh9:Unable to view PDF files from search results in Firefox
Is this a Firefox plug-in issue, rather than a Robohelp issue?
Background info:
Using Rh9
Firefox 23.0 (latest version)
Works successfully in Chrome (latest version) and Microsoft IE 8 and IE 9
Using Firefox, I am able to view the test PDF file from within a topic, via a hyperlink. Unable to view the test PDF when it appears within the search results.
Failure behavior
Information message appears at the top of the screen, indicating that "This PDF document might not be displayed correctly."
A button appears: "Open with Different Viewer"
In the main frame, the page is blank except for the Adobe Viewer controls: i.e., zoom, page navigation, download, print, ....
Any ideas?
Thank you,
-bruce.I think it is an Acrobat issue. I have seen it and with PDFs not linked to Fm or Rh. Sometimes you can see the issue and sometimes you don't. I also have Nitro PDF and that displays the PDF without problems.
If it is a PDF you create, I guess you could try some different settings or use something else to create it to see if the problem goes away.

DirectAccess client enables IPHTTPS interface when inside corporate network at remote sites
We have 4 offices connected via an MPLS network. I've installed the DA server in the main office. We're using a PKI for NLS and IPsec certs and a self-signed cert for IPHTTPS. For the most part everything works great. When a DA client is in the main office
all DA settings are disabled and the client acts as it should. When on the internet the IPHTTPs tunnel is established and remote access works.
My problem is when the same DA client connects at one of the remote offices. When at a remote office the IPHTTPS interface is active. The NRPT is not. No tunnel is actually established but I find Event 4012, NCSI event logs showing that the Inside/Outside probe
failed. This in and of itself would not be a big deal as the tunnel is never established however it does seem to cause Outlook to prompt for a password. I know this has something to do with our OWA site being resolvable inside the network, but I'm at a loss
as to why this only happens with the IPHTTPS interface is active with no tunnel established.
The NLS site appears to be working from the remote offices. I can ping NLS via DNS name and can open the https NLS website in a browser.
Anyone have any ideas as to why this would be happening?Event Logs:

WRE54G Power Issues??
I too have a WRE54G Range Expander that I removed from the outlet and repositioned, but then failed to power up - no LED indicators, no activity. I have read a few postings of similar power failure behavior and thought there might be an underlying issue/
Does anyone know if there might be a defect, recall or failed power supply component for these units?
Thanks... KeithI had exactly the same problem and it is not the firt time one of my linksys products fail with no apparent cause.
How much time has your linksys repeater been working along?
Mine ones have been working between two and tree years. The first I bought is the first that failed. The difference in time between they failed really looks like the diference in time between I bought them.
Can anybody explain it?
Are you at the same chance?
Thanks -
Why Is Logic Express 9 Afraid Of 2 GB Files?
I use GarageBand to record my podcasts. Sometimes - when the duration of the mono recording is approximately 1 hr - GB (32-bit) will crash when I try to export to MP3, because it's running out of available memory. I'll leave aside what I know about programming in 32-bit, and how UNIX-based OSes shouldn't have too much difficulty turning a 1 gigabyte GB proprietary data file into a 30 megabyte MP3.
I purchased Logic Express 9 because it could operate in 64-bit mode, and be able to get to the remaining 4 Gb of RAM on my iMac that GB couldn't see. For podcasts around 1 hr, this worked. However, now I've got a 2-hr podcast from GB, and LE9 is complaining that "the maximum file size of 2 GB has been exceeded." There's a post at:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6149049
but back in 2008 the posters expected Apple to fix this. The last post was three years ago.
Back in the days when Macs came equipped with drives that had 10's of gigabytes of disk space, I could see where putting 2 Gb out into the file system might be dicey. But my new iMac has over 1,000 Gb of space. Apple, are you kidding me? This is an arbitrary limitation for a machine that is both 64-bit and has 8 Gb of RAM not to mention 500 Gb of free disk space. ***?
The previous article had some suggestions that I'm about to try. But this is just stupid.
So, just to ask: is Logic Studio better? Did Apple hamstring Express? What about Logic Pro?
Cheers,
karlFox:
My apologies for taking so long to get back to you. I need to pay more attention!
So, GB really does crash when trying to export to MP3 of anything longer than about 1 hour 15 minutes or so. I did find a fix for this - there's an option in Preferences that if turned off GB will stop trying to do some kind of whole-track normalization while it does the MP3-compression. I haven't tried this on the 2-hour recording, but it works for the 1:15 recording. While in its failure behavior (i.e., before I turned off the option), I watched the memory usage of the entire machine while GB attempted to compress the MP3 and it crashed ("The application GarageBand has unexpectedly quit") as soon as it ran out of memory (i.e., its memory demands were 4+ Gb, which is the max for all 32-bit apps).
LE spins the beachball and then displays the aforementioned message about a max file size of 2 Gb. LE is running in 64-bit mode, but I have no idea why a file size of 2 Gb is a problem for it. Especially when the resulting MP3 file is smaller than 100 Mb.
My guess: Apple didn't stress-test either of these products with Really Large Files.
Good luck with your endeavor!
Cheers,

DirectAccess 2012 force tunneling
Hi,
I have a Windows Server 2012 DirectAccess implementation where I want to enable force tunneling so clients using DirectAccess from the Internet will us force all traffic to the
DA server.
When I select “use force tunneling” in the DA Wizard and save the configuration, my DA enabled clients loses network connectivity when they are placed on my internal network.
In the DA wizard I see the help text “DirectAccess clients connected to the internal network and to the Internet via remote Access server” below the “use force tunneling” option.
Can it be true that the force tunneling apply to all DA clients regardless if they are placed internally or on the Internet?
If that is true it will give a lot of traffic on the DA server if force tunneling is enabled.
Thomas Forsmark SoerensenI'm having the exact same issue :
When in the internal network there is still an entry in the NRPT : the one for "."

My setup is the following:
One NIC behind a FW/Reverse Proxy (squid), force tunneling activated, windows 7 clients (PKI deployed), NAP (NPS/HRA deployed and working).
I tried some tips on DNS resolution:
- enable "Allow DA clients to use local name resolution"
- use least restrictive local name resolution option 'use local name resolution for any kind of DNS resolution error" (but I tried others)
In the configuration there is :
- "." and the DA DNS Server prefix:3333::1
- public url of my DA and no DNS server
- DirectAccess-NLS.internaldomain no DNS Server
On the netsh dnsclient show state this is also strange:

How to permanently kill a DBMS_JOB
... prior to that 16 failures.
I have two jobs that I want to permanently kill.
I have set them to BROKEN.
I have set job_queue_processes = 0;
I have killed off all sessions related to these jobs.
As soon as I reset job_queue_processes back > 0 (to 10), the old processes restart (with their old session id's) and then the job is set to UNbroken!
How do I totally get rid of these jobs, withot having to wait out the 16 failures .
Also, do DBMS_SCHEDULER jobs follow this same 16x failure behavior if the job fails ?
These re unexpected failures due ot resource problems - it is NOT ok to just let them run, they will hang the system (again) and fail gain.
Thank you,
KarenHi,
I am not sure why this is happening.
If you really want to get rid of the job, maybe you need to use dbms_job.remove .
I can also confirm that this does not happen in dbms_scheduler. Once a job is disabled using dbms_scheduler.disable it will not run until it is re-enabled.
A dbms_scheduler job will be retried only if the restartable attribute is set to TRUE for a job (by default it is false). If you set restartable to be true then a failing job will restart after 1,10,100,1000,10000,100000 seconds before failing that run (or just go to the next regularly scheduled date if that comes first).
In dbms_scheduler you can use stop_job to stop the job either gracefully or forcefully.
All of these are reasons to switch to using dbms_scheduler if you are using 10g or above (and there are several others besides).
Hope this helps,
Ravi. -

Random crash on MBP (Mid 2010) - Mountain Lion
Hi guys, I'm currently using this machine, it was given to me by a colleague that use it for almost two years without any issues.
When I got the machine I just did the following:
1. Format the hard drive (HDD) and replace it with my working SSD (OCZ Vertex 2 180GB)
2. Install a brand new Mountain Lion, Office and a few programs (nothing harmless or complex I think, istat for example)
Since my first day with the machine I am experiencing some random crashes, I've readed A LOT about the Video Issue with this particular MacBook Pro but I didn't think I have it cause the machine was working perfectly before I reinstalled the software and the failure behavior is quite different as I have readed so far.
My machine just pop up the gray screen whit this message (http://roberthuttinger.blogsite.org/images/kernel_panic.jpg) that says that something went wrong and ask me to press a key to reboot the machine, when I do it I get an error report that i don't understand.
My CPU temp always is between 45 and 80 and mostly of the time is around 60 C.
I'll appreciate any help or Ideas you may have,
Cheers,Thanks for your reply, here you go,

Oracle 11.2.0.3 RAC behavior
Does anyone know which is the normal behavior of a RAC 11.2.0.2 after a failure?, im doing HA tests and i want to certify if my rac works fine.
Like:
What happen if i lose one of my public interfaces eth0?
What happen if i lose one of my privates interfaces eth1?
One of the nodes is rebooted...
if ASM goes down?
what would be the behaviour of the local listener or the scan listener and the database services? they relocate?
And what happen when the problem is solved?
do they have to move back automatically to the initial node?
ThanksWhat happen if i lose one of my public interfaces eth0?
You will lose virtual adapters GI plumbed on that node. Consequently, Your local resources dependent on the virtual adapters (local listener, ora.net1.network and ons) will go offline, while asm and its diskgroups will remain available. Cluster resources like VIPs, scan and scan listener will failover and the DB will remain online.
What happen if i lose one of my privates interfaces eth1?
One of the nodes is rebooted...
If there are no issues with the node, it will join the cluster and local resources will become online and the node specific cluster resources will failover back to this node. Scan and scanvip may not move back to this node.
if ASM goes down?
If ASM goes down on one node, then cluster resources(scan, scan vip and node vip) will failover and the DB instance would crash on this node.
And what happen when the problem is solved?
(refer to reboot scenario above)
do they have to move back automatically to the initial node?
Node specific resources like the node vip will failover back to the node, but the scan and scan vip may not.
