RAC recovery
In a RAC environment, when we perform a RECOVERY. Does all the instance need to be shutdown? or only one instance?
Hello,
Yes it's possible
Here are some regular example

Question on Restore,Recovery from Image Copy in RAC
version: 11.2.0.3
Platform : AIX 6
Found the following in
http://www.oracleracexpert.com/2011_12_01_archive.html
SYS@DBTEST>startup mount
SYS@DBTEST>switch database to copy;
SYS@DBTEST>Recovery the database;
SYS@DBTEST>Alter database open; The author of the blog says
"Please note that we didn’t restore backup from backup disk or media, we have pointed the database to backup. "
So, how will this work for restores in RAC ? Because, after the 'switching' to a datafile which is now disk based only one of the instance will be able to acess that datafile. Right ?
Even if we be cross-mount the backup location to both nodes , the datafile will still not be in the ASM diskgroup where it was originally stored ?The blog is "oracleracexpert" but the notes on Incrementally Updated backups at http://www.oracleracexpert.com/2011/12/rman-incrementally-updated-backups.html are NOT necessarily for RAC.
The backup is done to '/oradata/rman/backup.%u' which may not be a filesystem accesible by all the notes.
If you really want to implement Incrementally Updated Backups with the ability to SWITCH DATABASE TO COPY for a RAC environment, your backup destination must
(a) asupported Cluster FileSystem (*not* Oracle ACFS which is not to be used for Database Files)
OR
(b) an ASM DiskGroup accessible by all the nodes.

Related to recovery in Physical standby database in RAC
In Physical Standby database all instance involved in recovery processes or any one instance will be their in in recovery mode
If is like this another instance will be for high availabily can any one in forum explain me it will be help fullWith your Primary database being RAC, the Physical Standby does not have to be RAC, although, obviously it would be preferred to have scalability as required at a DR site.
Whether your Standby is RAC or non-RAC, the automatic Recovery that is done at the Standby is done by one instance only. It would be applying the ArchiveLogs from all the threads (i.e. instances) of the Primary.
Database Recovery is always done by a single instance.

Transaction Recovery within an Oracle RAC environment
Good evening everyone.
I need some help with Oracle 11gR1 RAC transaction-level recovery issues. Here's the scenario.
We have a three(3) node RAC Cluster running Oracle 11g R1. The Web UI portion of the application connects through WLS 9.2.3 with connection pooling set. We also have a command-line/SQL*Developer component that uses a TNSNAMES file that allows for both failover and load balancing. Within either the UI or the command line portion of the application, a user can run a process by which invokes one or more PL/SQL Packages to be invoked. The exact location of the physical to the database is dependent on which server is chosen from either the connection pooling or the TNSNAMES.ORA Load Balancing option.
In the normal world, the process executes and all is good. The status of the execution of this process is updated by the Packages once completed. The problem we are encountering is when an Oracle Instance fails. Here's where I need some help. For Application-level (Transaction Level) recovery, the database instances are first recovered by the database background proccesses and then Users must determine which processes were in flight and either re-execute them (if restart processing is part of the process) or remove any changes and restart from scratch. Given that the database instance does not record which processes are "in flight" it is the responsibility of the application to perform its own recovery processing. Is this still true?
If an instance fails, are "in flight" transactions/connections moved to other instances in the Grid/RAC environment? I don't think this is possible but I don't remember if this was accomplished through a combination of Application and Database Server features that provide feedback between each other. How is the underlying application notified of the change if such an issue occurs? I remember something similar to this in older versions of Oracle but I cannot remember what it was callled.
Any help or guidance would be great as our client is being extremely difficult in pressing this issue.
Thanks in advance

(248) 408-2918You have not indicated whether you are using TAF or FCF ... that would be the first place to start.
My recommendation would be to let Oracle roll back the database changes and have the application resubmit the most recent work.
If the application knows what it did since the last "COMMIT" then you should be fine with the possible exception of variables stored
in packages. Depending on packages retaining values is an issue best solved with PRAGMA SERIALLY_REUSABLE ... in other words
not using the retention feature. -
Hi,
I am cloning from 10g RAC to single node. For this, I am trying to recover from the
Hot backup of RAC database.
I have take the archives from both the nodes, while backup was in progress.
But during recovery, I am getting messed up with Thread1 and Thread 2 archives.
Is there any funda behind RAC manual recovery ??
Thanks
Sunil. What do you mean by "I am getting messed up with Thread1 and Thread 2 archives." ?
The THREAD# should be part of the log_archive_format so that you can identify the archivelogs of each thread.
At the RECOVER DATABASE session, if Oracle starts from Thread#1, it can identify the archivelog for the Thread#1 file. However, for the first archivelog from Thread#2, it may not be be able to identify the archivelog file name but it DOES provide you the expected Sequence#. So, you can enter the archivelog from Thread#2 corrresponding to that Sequence#. Subsequently, Oracle should be able to identify and apply archivelogs from both Threads. -
Reasonable time for instance recovery in RAC
Hi,
We're running with Oracle RAC configuration. The configuration is 2 instances one active one passive and we simulate failure of the active instance under load of ~1500 transactions per second.
In our tests we're seeing that between failure time until 2nd passive instance is taking responsibility it might take more than 1 or 2 minutes.
The question is: Is this behavior is reasonable? Fine - what SLA we can expect in those scenarios? other scenarios?
Where can we read about this in details.
Thank you,

I am not agree with this, 1500 transaction per second if you lost it in 2 mins that means 180000 transaction. If one transaction worth of $1 then you have loose $180000
and I don't think FAST_START_MTTR_TARGET, this will make checkpoint to occur more frequent hence make overall performance degrated
ThxYes, but if you're starting to calculate in that kind of numbers, then I'm wondering why they use an active/passive config.

Parallel recovery on DR on RAC
Hi all,
We have a 2 node DR on 2 node RAC. Just wanted to know if it is possible to do recovery from both the nodes parallel, I mean node 1 will apply its archive and node 2 prod nodes 2 archive.
If this is possible how is that and if its not why?
Regards
IDHello;
Have you looked at:
D.1.1 Setting Up a Multi-Instance Primary with a Single-Instance Standby
Data Guard Concepts and Administration 11g Release 2 (11.2) E25608-04
If yes, what would parallel recovery give you?
I have never tried to do this setup but the main issues I would see it the second standby instance would not be available
if something happened to the first standby instance.
By using only one instance for apply it's much simplier to keep track of the redo coming from the two primary instances.
If you don't use a standby as a reader database it does not have a lot of load on it. Generally if you check the alert
log there are several minutes between the "waiting for log..." messages.
Great question!

There won't be any different settings for RMAN for RAC except for where and how you would be configuring the Archive logs and place your backups. Both, ideally speaking, should be on the shared storage like ASM but there are other combinations also possible. Review the above given links for the same. That should provide a good starting point.

Edited by: user9097501 on Oct 18, 2010 6:32 AMHi,
Loss of the Oracle Cluster Registry file affects the availability of RAC and Cluster Ready Services.
The OCR file can be restored from a physical backup that is automatically created or from an export file that is manually created by using the ocrconfig tool.
Additionally, starting with Oracle Database 10g Release 10.2, Oracle can optionally mirror the OCR so that a single OCR device failure can be tolerated.
Check This..

RAC RMAN BACKUP Recovery FOR Oracle APPS Application
Hi,
We have an Application which is similar to Oracle APPs application and We have a RAC Database at Backend.
As I am a Oracle RAC DBA and never worked as an Oracle apps DBA.
Each Week or month We have to deploy a patch on Our Database which are kind of sql changes to Database and before we applying we need to backup our Database.
I am very comfortable while applying patches on Single instance Database:-
I Usually shutdown my database and backing up My Database(Conistent\cold Backup) before applying patch.
and I have a Flash back on both option I am having for my Database.
Problem:-
But in Production I have RAC Database, on which I already configured Hot Backup.
FlashBackup Feature is there with me, but Not reliable.
I want cold backup along with my existing hot backup, and want to restore same if something goes wrong.
Since ASM is configured so we have only option RMAN backup.
IF possible kindly Share your knowledge and Experience of your to handle Such Problem.Sir,
RMAN is already configured for backing up database online.
My only intention is to have cold or consistent backup before applying application patch, So that at the time of crisis I will resotre my Cold/Conistent backup.
Because I am using 11gr2 RAC with ASM, so only option is there for me to use rman as backup tool.
But I never tried to Have Cold backup in RAC environment in my previous jobs, and I am new to this Oracle APPS DBA technology. So Here I am looking for a Strategy that Normally oracle apps dba use while applying patch to Oracle Database and kind of backup strategy they use.
