Radeon, XBMC, HD Audio plus a 50% decrease in CPU usage over Catalyst

Radeon, XBMC, VDPAU, HD Audio plus a 50% decrease in CPU usage over AMD Catalyst Drivers
Big Thanks goes out to Fritsch! I could not have put this all together without him doing all the upfront grunt work.
For Fritch's thread and install guide for Ubuntu:
Linux Radeon OSS with vdpau (Ubuntu How To).
Since you are using Arch Linux (which requires Linux experience) I take that into account with my instructions. Consider this an OVERVIEW with the various packages, patches, etc. that you will need to do it yourself.
(If you have installed Arch, XBMC, etc. this should be a breeze. Otherwise, if you need additional help... post and I or someone else will reply.)
What you get:
- Bitstream Audio (including DTS-HD, TrueHD, LPCM 7.1)
- max resolution: 2048 x 1152
- mpeg2, mpeg4, h264, vc1 accleration
- Bob deinterlacing via vdpau
- 24 fps Video Playback (AMD and Intel Haswell CPUs)
- XBMC runs with 50% less CPU usage over AMD Catalyst Drivers
Hardware tested on:
CPU - AMD 8350
Video Cards Tested - AMD 5770 and AMD HD6450
Instructions:
1. Install of Arch (Running Linux Kernel 3.12.1)
2. Install the mesa10-git
(mesa-git,mesa--libgl-git,ati-dri-git)
3. Install linux-firmware, xorg-server, xf86-video-ati, xorg-xinit, etc. using Pacman (Arch Package Manager).
Below is a link to my xorg.conf:
Note: I am running Xen, unRAID, XBMC and several other VMs. XBMC is my desktop so I disabled composite. If you are running a desktop, enable it.
Radeon xorg.conf
Be sure to check out the Radeon Wiki on how to set up your xorg.conf correctly and other settings like Dynamic power management.
4. Add radeon.dpm=1 radeon.audio=1 clocksource=hpet hpet=enable to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX in /etc/default/grub.
5. Update grub.
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
6. Add export LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=vdpau and export VDPAU_DRIVER=r600 to /etc/bash.bashrc and to /var/lib/xbmc/.bashrc.
7. Unmute any of the S/PDIFs that might be muted.
alsamixer
8. Store alsamixer settings.
alsactl store
9. May be required - Edit /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf and set the correct card and device id.
For my System:
defaults.pcm.card 0
defaults.pcm.device 3
10. Install xbmc-xvba (FernetMenta).
11. Enable XBMC to autostart:
systemctl enable xbmc.service
To start xbmc:
systemctl start xbmc.service
12. Add / Create advancedsettings.xml (location: /var/lib/xbmc/.xbmc/userdata) and add the following:
<advancedsettings>
<loglevel hide="false">0</loglevel>
<gui>
<algorithmdirtyregions>3</algorithmdirtyregions>

<min>23</min>
<max>24</max>
<delay>175</delay> <!-- set to zero or adjust if audio seems out of sync with 24p movies -->
</refresh>
</latency>
</video>
</advancedsettings>
13. Restart XBMC for the above settings to be used:
systemctl restart xbmc.service
XBMC Settings:
Settings->System->Video Output:
Vertical Sync: Always Enabled
Settings->Video->Playback:
VDPAU: On
Prefer VDPAU Mixer: ON

I followed these instrucitons and the worked perfectly on my HTPC build (running the AMD APU A4-4000 on a Gigabyte GA-F2A88XN-WIFI).  I have a quick question though.  When I want to shutdown or reboot I hit the power button on the lower left of the XBMC main window.  Usually a dialog menu pops up giving me the option to Suspend, Shut-Down, Reboot... etc. etc.  The menu in the xbmc-xvba build only shows "Exit".  How do I enable these other options?  I'd like to at least be able to shutdown or reboot from within XBMC.
EDIT:
Nevermind, I solved it..
I found this thread
It says that running XBMC as a service will not register my session and polkit will not work.  I have to autologin as the user xbmc and startx automatically.
I followed the instructions here and here.  Then I added "exec xbmc --standalone" to the end of my /var/lib/xbmc/.xinitrc file.
Everything works fine now.

  • CPU Usage 100%? K8N Diamond Plus

Never before have I witnessed the CPU being used at it's absolute maximum.  It has been occuring regularily with my system.  I noticed it first when my screen saver started getting jittery.  This seems to occur most often about 1-2 minutes after windows finishes loading.  It seems kind of odd to me that this occurs during typically idle system times.  The memory usage also dramatically rises during these spikes, using ctrl+alt+delete I noticed svchost.exe to be the culprit of the memory usage atleast.  The hard drive doesn't appear to be active when these events occur.  Is this normal for this motherboard, or is this something that should be corrected?
I've always had 3 short beeps upon startup with this board, but it has never stalled the boot process.  Anyone know what this means?
I've upgraded my board somewhat recently and carried over the CPU and memory from a older MSI model that used the same type.  Could it be possible either or both are incompatible?
Also one, somewhat less important problem.  First off I must say that the PS/2 power on feature is pretty cool.  I used it with a wireless keyboard so I could turn on my PC from my living room HDTV (I have my comp wired through Y/Pr/Pb cables).  Only problem is about one in every 4 or so shutdowns the system restarts immediatly when this feature is selected in the bios.  Bios issue maybe?

get Process Explorer to determinate in details what make this CPU usage: http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html
it has more detailed information than the built-in task manager.

  • Ableton Live 6 vs Logic Pro 8 CPU usage/audio quality.

    Hi,
Any user's have feedback regarding CPU usage between Abelton Live 6 vs Logic Pro 8. I'm currently running Live 6 on an MBP 2.0ghz (CD) and am constantly running into audio drop outs etc etc.I am reading throughout the net that Logic Pro 8 is more CPU friendly than LIve 6... is this true, overall? Also any users ever do a mixing test between the two apps to see if there was an audio difference when rendering your final project to aiff or wav? I am thinking on using Live 6 as a stratch pad to "create" as I enjoy it's flexibility then transfer the project over to Logic, however that depends if there really is a difference in CPU usage and Audio quality between the two DAW's.
    Thanks.
guess i should also state that i will be running on the new imac's come tax return time. lol

Logic 8 is very CPU friendly, I can say that much. I never found Ableton Live 5 to be very taxing either, though. Pro Tools is.
But like you I use Ableton as a scratchpad, I love how it works, and Logic for the finishing touches. But that's just because I'm not good at Logic yet. Not fast at it.
Get them both! You'll be glad you did.

  • Continuous Audio, Jerky Video, High CPU Usage

    Hello,
I've been browsing the forum for a while and tried a few searches. I found some problems similar to mine, but nothing with a solution that worked. Here is my situation. I was running Windows XP Home SP3 with the latest IE, Firefox and Chrome browsers. I updated my flash player (to 10) and I hulu didn't work any more. The audio would play but the video would freeze and change to a different frame every now and then, usually a couple minutes behind the audio. I had already decided that I wanted to switch over to Ubuntu 10 so I just did a fresh install. I updated everything over night and then I tried to watch hulu using the latest firefox. I had the same problem. The audio will play, but the video freezes. I downloaded the latest Chrome. Same problem, both with high cpu usage. I am using a Dell Inspirion 2200 with 1.5 ghz cpu and 512 mb ram with integrated graphics. So far the only thing I've tried is disabling hardware acceleration. My internet connection is 1.5 mb. I would really appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    ralphcholo

I noticed it's the "audiodg.exe" program that is acting weird with high cpu usage.  Some tutorials say to disable 'audio enhancements' but I can't find that option available in windows 10. In device manager, I notice 2 separate audio drivers.  The Acer download page only has 1 realtek audio driver.  I'm wondering if there is supposed to be another driver to update?  My audio seems to be working fine without this problem coming back.   I've attached a screenshot showing the 2 different audio fields in device manager.  The bottom one is the driver listed on the Acer driver page, I'm not sure where the other upper audio driver is to download.

  • [SOLVED] Audio playing bad except with high CPU load

I recently switched to a new motherboard: Asus Z97-Deluxe
This motherboard has a ALC1150 audio chip, which uses the snd_hda_intel driver.
    CPU: Intel i5-4670K
    Kernel: 3.14.4-1-ARCH #1
    alsa-info: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bymxsc … sp=sharing
Audio is playing bad: 'radio noise', skipping, repeating. It is unusable.
Before I used pulseaudio, but to diagnose this problem I have removed it.
Now with alsa left, it plays a little bit better, but the problem is still there.
The only moment when the audio works great is when the CPU is busy, such as compiling a Linux kernel.
Sometimes moving the mouse has a positive impact too.
My gut feeling tells me the cause might be the BIOS, the driver, power management or CPU scheduler.
Since I have been searching for about a day on the Internet and trying most of the offered obvious solutions, I am now searching for active help.
Any suggestions how to approach this audio issue?

The option "options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=0" does not seem to have any effect.
For each change in alsa-base.conf, I have rebooted the machine.
There are no other sound cards in the system.

  • XBMC: HDMI audio starts out OK, then gets distorted after few minutes

    Hi,
I have posted about this on the XBMC forums, but one of the developers kindly informed me that they do not support XBMC on Arch Linux in any way, so I should take my queries elsewhere. I am hoping that someone here might be able to shed some light on my issue.
I am trying to use XBMC 13.1 (xbmc-13.1-2) with Samsung EH5300 32" Smart TV (2013 model) over HDMI connection. The HTPC computer is AMD-based (AMD A4-5300 APU, which includes Radeon HD 7480D GPU), and runs an up-to-date Arch Linux (last full system upgrade on 2014-06-26). I am using the open source "radeon" driver (xf86-video-ati-1:7.3.0-1). Everything has been great except the sound:
The sound starts out fine, but a few minutes later it begins to get distorted. At first it sounds like reverb affecting voice only, but with time the distortion increases until it sounds kind of cued TV noise. If I restart the video, the sound works again for a while. If I change options in Settings -> System -> Audio Output, like the number of channels or pass-through, the sound is again good for a little while. If I enable or disable "Stereo Upmix" or change audio stream from the "Audio - Settings" dialogue window available during video playback, it too seems to "reset" the sound to sounding normal for a while.
Has anyone seen something like this?
I have tried different videos, and it seems like HD videos are affected more than SD videos, starting with distortions only a few minutes in (except the one Xvid video, which was fine for 15 minutes). Some SD videos are completely fine, some start having distortion issues only after 20 minutes or so. Judging from video information, if the video uses 5.1 channels (all HD videos fall in this category), it definitely gets distorted; if a video only uses 2.0 channels (like the SD videos), some are fine while others get distortion later on. I have "Number of channels" in Audio Output settings set to 2.0. Changing this (or any other audio settings) has not affected the distortion.
Following Arch Wiki: Radeon note about HDMI audio, I tried adding radeon.audio=1 to the kernel line; this did not solve the issue, just added some visual glitches.
In the XBMC debug log I posted, the distortions happen at around 17:26, though there is absolutely nothing logged at that time, even though I enabled "Verbose logging of AUDIO component" in the Debugging settings. The video I was playing there showed the following in the information window: 720 H.264 dts 5.1 16:9.
Any suggestions, ideas, or experiences would be appreciated. It definitely seems to be XBMC issue, since I was able to play the same HD video through mplayer without any problems (for at least half an hour, which would have already showed distortions several times through XBMC).

    Hi GDykes,
OK Imagine that Connection speed from your ISP is like an empty freeway. You can go full tilt (upto that road's speed limit)
Bandwidth is like a busy freeway where you only get to go as the bit you are in allows.
Reducing the Bandwidth in iChat or in the System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab is like a vehicle that has a maximum speed that is slower than the speed possible on the freeway.

  • Mac Pro 4,1 with Radeon 5770 upgrade audio problem

Today I installed the 5770 upgrate from apple. I bought it from amazon.co.uk.
I installed two cards, one on my 4,1 mac Pro and one on my old 1,1 Mac Pro.
The problem is that I lost the sound card on my 4,1. No audio at all. There is no sound card in the profiler, although when i run Windows 7 64 on bootcamp I can see the sound card, the drivers work but still no sound at all. I rolled back to my 4770 and everything worked as usual. The old mac runs perfectly with the new radeon.
Both macs run 10.6.7 fully updated.
    I don't understand it
    need help...

    Hi There!
Same thing happened to me today installing a new ATI 5770 into a 2009 quad-core Mac Pro.
    Simple answer: reset your PRAM.
There is a switch on the logicboard next to the RTC battery.
Shutdown the Mac with the 5770 installed, disconnect the Mac's power cable, hold down the reset swtich for 10 seconds, re-attach the Mac's power cable & boot the Mac.
If successful you will hear the "RAM is good" chime when booting.
Your audio device will now appear in System Profiler.
    Enjoy your music!

  • How do I export 5.1 audio plus stereo audio in the same sequence?

For final broadcast delivery, we need to provide a ProRes 422 video with 48, 24bit audio on 8 tracks according to the following configuration.  How do I do this in Premiere since it does not have a true, discrete 5.1 channel or outputs?
Channel 1 Surround Mix Left Front
Channel 2 Surround Mix Right Front
    Channel 3 Surround Mix Center
    Channel 4 Surround Mix LFE
Channel 5 Surround Mix Left Rear
Channel 6 Surround Mix Right Rear
    Channel 7 Stereo Left
    Channel 8 Stereo Right

Currently you can export only 5.1 or stereo, but not both at the same time.  The next update will add the capability you're looking for.

  • 4 year old MSI K8N Diamond Plus [MS-7220], best upgrade CPU

I built this system about 3 1/2 years ago. It has AMD 64 4000 San Diego. It still runs respectable, especially with new Radion 4850. My question is, what is the fastest CPU I can upgrade to, and is it  worth while? Is the dual core a better choice than the single. Thanks for any advice.

  • My HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus all-in-one doesn't scan over my wife network anymore

I have a wi-fi network in my home which works fine for internet on my laptop, and I used to be able to both print and scan over this network just fine.  I can still print using the network, but can no longer put stuff into the document feeder and go back to the laptop and use the scan function.  The scan function actually no longer even appears on the icon I used to have for it, only the print function.
The scan function does not appear in my device manager (control panel), in either the image devices or the printer devices area.
I have tried to uninstall and reinstall this device several times in many different ways and even tried to obtain the updated driver from the internet.  I was successful a few months ago in reinstalling the device and retrieving the ability to control the scanner from the laptop.  Now I can only reinstall the printer function, periood.
How can I get back the scanner function on my laptop to use over my wi-fi network?  Of course my warranty for service expired earlier this year.

Good day and welcome to the forums, @MSRantal
I read about how you can no longer scan over the network from your Officejet 8600 Plus, to your laptop, and I will do my best to help you out. I have some questions to get started.
    I would like to know:
Which operating system you are running on your laptop?
Are you able to scan to another computer over the network?
Have you tried plugging in a USB to the laptop and scanning?
If yes, did a USB connected scan work?
Have you tried scanning after disabling your firewall and/or anti-virus?
When you install the printer, do you see any error messages (or does the install completed successfully)?
If you do not have your printer plugged in directly to a wall outlet, try that.
    Hoping to hear from you!
    Happy Tuesday!

  • No Audio on either end Cisco Jabber for Windows over Cisco AnyConnect

Our telephony staff is replacing our aging/unsupported VoIP system with a Cisco system and as the network tech, I'm trying to get Jabber for Windows to work over our AnyConnect VPN client.  Jabber to Cisco phone and Jabber to Jabber calls work fine within our LAN.
However, when I take a laptop to a separate internet connection and connect to the network via the VPN, I can't get any audio to pass across the system, in either direction.  If I call a phone on our LAN using the Jabber client (via AnyConnect), the phone rings and when I answer it, it's just dead air on both ends.  If I reverse the process, calling from the phone to the Jabber client, the same thing, Jabber client rings, but dead air both ways once I answer.
Things I can do from the laptop over the VPN connection:
I'm able to get to the phone's web interface using that same laptop.
I can ping the phone as well.  In fact, the VPN profile I'm using has full access to the entire VoIP Vlan including all IP traffic (all ~65,000 ports).
Searching the address book also works fine.  I can search for staff and it's pulling directly from our Active Directory environment.
Is there any special settings on the firewall that I need to setup to allow the voice traffic (which I assume is RTP traffic)?  I tried to add a service policy for RTP traffic, but that didn't seem to work...unless I built it wrong.
    Jabber for Windows - 10.6.0
    Cisco Anyconnect - 3.1.06079
    Cisco 5515-x ASA - 9.2

I was able to resolve this on my own.  I thought that SIP traffic needed to be inspected via the global inspection policy in order for it to pass through the firewall. I ran into the same issue with ICMP traffic from an Anyconnect client to LAN devices. I had to enable ICMP in that policy for us to be able to ping LAN devices over the VPN tunnel. So when I saw that SIP was already being inspected by this policy, I moved on looking for other solutions. Then I stumbled deep within a Google search (almost hit the end of the Internet doing so) where someone mentioned that SIP shouldn’t be inspected by that policy. So I unchecked it and bam! Voice is now working over the anyconnect client to phones on the LAN.

  • Xorg 1.5rc6 radeon high cpu usage

    Hi to all.
I tried to install the new Xorg with radeon driver, because it doesn't work with catalyst/fglrx, but my system become really slow.
Xorg uses a lot of cpu when I move a windows or just start an app.
With XAA it's a little better than EXA, with vesa and with radeon git it's the same so probably isn't a driver related problem.

Zap: You may want to try removing a lot of the code/options from your xorg.conf. The new radeon driver does a really good job of setting itself up without the need for explicitly adding options. There may be a few options you must define, but those are things like a modeline ***if and only if your monitor does not report the correct edid information***
I have been using the new xserver, mesa, drm, ati-driver, since may (on ubuntu before), when r500 3d support was added.
    I have an x1650 (rv535 chip).
I did the upgrade to mesa release when it hit testing. At that time I also installed the xserver&ati driver that are in testing (even though they are the same as what I was running before.
There were a few changes, for instance, I had to explicitly define the migration heuristic option, whereas it *seems* was loaded automatically before.
