RADIUS authentication on IAS server

I have a 1200 AP configured for RADIUS authentication on Microsoft IAS server but I am experiencing a problem getting clients authenticated. (Association is working fine.)
The 1200 is connected to the IAS Server via an 837 router (no switch involved) and I am wondering if any RADIUS settings have to be configured on the 837 for AAA communication to pass through to the IAS server or will the requests pass through automatically?

ScottMac is correct, if you're using IAS you need to use PEAP which requires a security cert. Microsoft provide a very nice toolkit of scripts and documents to simplify the installation and configuration of IAS, Cert Services, etc, etc, you can get it from here:

    I configured a WLAN with PEAP (CHAP v2)and Radius authentication to a Win 2003 IAS Radius Server.
    On the controller 4402 the layer 2 security is set to WPA1+WPA2 with 802.1x authentication.

    What I understand from your post is that the authentication is not handled by your IAS server. IF I am correct, the problem might be with the "Allow AA override" option disabled in your WLAN. If it is enabled, then the AAA server or your IAS server will override the security parameters set locally on the controller.
    So, first ensure whether "Allow AAA override" is enabled under Controller--->WLAN field.
    Also, chek out the logs of the IAS server for obtaining more info on this.

  • CAM Radius Authentication against IAS

    Hello i have spent the greater part of the day trying to get my Clean access manager to Authenicate against my Windows IAS server. I can see the connections showing up in the logs however i keep getting registration rejected or no matching policy errors. I have tried all of the different radius types and have tried many diffeent policies with various NAS-Port-types and other NAS properties however nothing seems to work. Is there a sure fire setup that will at least get the Cam talking to the IAS server. I have yet to find a config example anywhere or anythign that talks about how the IAs box should be set to accept what the CAM sends. Any help is appreciated.

  • Web Authentication with MS IAS Server

    I'm trying to configure my 2106 WLC to authenticate with an MS IAS Radius Server. I had this working, but my boss did not want to do any configuration on the client side and now wants to do all authentication through Web authentication with the Radius server. The wireless client connects and is redirected to the login page like they're supposed to, but when I enter my credentials the login fails. However, if I enter the login of a local user to the controller the authentication works.
    I see in the logs the following error: AAA Authentication Failure for UserName:chevym User Type: WLAN USER. The authentication is reaching the server too, but the logs don't tell you much.

    I don't really understand any of that and I'm not really sure if I have the server itself configured correctly for what I want to do. Does anyone have instructions on how to do this?

    The policy is the default connection policy created when installing IAS.
    In ADUC, I've tried setting both the machine and users Dial-In properties to Allow Access or Control through policy, with the same result.
    I've gone through the policy and there isn't anything there, other than the Day-Time rule which is set to allow access for all hours of the whole day, every day.
    In the last few days, I've read about the Ignore User Dial In properties, but can't find where/how you set this.
    It sounded to me as if this had been resolved in this thread, so I wanted to know how this had been accomplished.

  • NAC guest server with RADIUS authentication for guests issue.

    We have just finally successfully installed our Cisco NAC guest server. We have version 2 of the server and basically the topology consists of a wism at the core of the network and a 4402 controller at the dmz, then out the firewall, no issues with that. We do however have a few problems, how can we provide access through a proxy without using pak files obviously, and is there a way to specify different proxies for different guest traffic, based on IP or a radius attribute etc.
    The second problem is more serious; refer to the documentation below from the configuration guide for guest nac server v2. It states that hotspots can be used and the Authentication option would allow radius authentication for guests, I’ve been told otherwise by Cisco and they say it can’t be done, has anyone got radius authentication working for guests.

    Well I will try to answer your 2nd questions.... will it work... yes.  It is like any other radius server (high end:))  But why would you do this for guest.... there is no reason to open up a port on your FW and to add guest accounts to and worse... add them in AD.  Your guest anchor can supply a web-auth, is able to have a lobby admin account to create guest acounts and if you look at it, it leaves everything in the DMZ.
    Now if you are looking at the self service.... what does that really give you.... you won't be able to controll who gets on, people will use bogus info and last but not least.... I have never gotten that to work right.  Had the BU send me codes that never worked, but again... that was like a year ago and maybe they fixed that.  That is my opinion.

  • Managing roles for ACE RADIUS authentication

    I have an ACE module running virtual contexts. I have configured the ACE contexts to authenticate against a RADIUS server (Windows IAS).
    When I log in, I am always given the role of 'network-monitoring'. I would like to configure the RADIUS server so it authenticates users as 'Admin'.
    Attached is a screeprint of the RADIUS clients set up on IAS (client names and IP addresses removed). The question here is if they should be configured as 'RADIUS Standard' or 'Cisco' in the 'Client-Vendor' field.
    Also attached is a screenshot of the IAS 'Remote Access Policy' that i have set up for the network devices (these include the ACE contexts aswell as Switches and FWSM contexts). The question here is whether I need both the 'Vendor-Specific' and 'Cisco-AV-Pair' attributes. Also, how do I need to configure these attributes so they will authenticate the Switches, Routers and FWSM contexts (allowing enable level 15) and authenticate the ACE contexts (allowing the 'Admin' role).
    I have also attached the RADIUS config lines that have been configured on the ACE contexts (IP address of server removed).
    I would appreciate any input.

    For some strange reason, when I log in, I can authenticate against the RADIUS server on IAS. When I try to go into enable mode, I am prompted for the password but the authentication fails. When I check the IAS server logs, I see the initial login request is coming into the IAS server with my username, however the enable request is coming into the IAS server with the user $enable15$.
    Do you know why this is the case? How do I configure the switches to insert the username in the enable authentication request?
    I have attached a screenshot of my current IAS attributes.
    I would really appreciate any input you may have on this second issue.

    Hi Pratik
    Sorry I mostly use only TACACS+ for AAA as it provides better granularity of access controls.
    You'll need to make some specific changes to your RADIUS config so that nominated users ( the ones you want to be able to go to enable mode ) get put straight into enable mode upon login.
    There's a guide here http://www.blindhog.net/cisco-aaa-login-authentication-with-radius-ms-ias/ which details the steps if you're using the Microsoft IAS radius server - you should be able to figure out that changes you need to make to your own server from there.

  • Cisco ACS 4.2 and Radius authentication?

    I have a Cisco ACS 4.2 installed and using it to authenticate users that log on to switches using TACACS+, when I use local password database, everything is working. But if i try to use external database authentication using a windows 2008 radius server, I have problem that I can only use PAP, not CHAP. Anyone who know if it's possible to use CHAP with external radius authentication?

    To access network devices for administrative purpose, we have only three methods available :
    [1] Telnet : Which uses PAP authentication protocol between client and the NAS device. So the communication between Client and NAS is unencrypted,  and when this information flows from NAS to IAS server gets encrypted using the shared secret key configured on device/IAS server.
    [2] SSH : Which uses  public-key cryptography for encrypting information between client and the NAS device, i.e, information sent between client 
    and NAS is fully secure. And the communication between NAS and IAS is encrypted using shared secret same as above. Good point on SSH side is that commincation channel is secure all the time.Again the authentication type would remain same that is PAP.
    [3] Console:Which is also the same it will not allow to use MSCHAP as there is no need to secure it as you laptop is connected directly to the NAS and then if you are using TACACS it will encrypt the payload .
    Summarizing, we cannot use CHAP, MS-CHAP, MS-CHAP V2 for communication between client and NAS device or administrative access.
    And the most secure way to administer a  device is to use SSH.

    Hi all,
    I need some advice on the authentication of my switches.
    I have a network set up where every switch uses telnet only for the transport input method. I need this to change to SSHv2 only.
    I also have a RADIUS server backing off to Active Directory that I can use for AAA authentication against users of the switches.
    Once I use SSH to login, I am in User EXEC mode. I would like to use RADIUS authentication to authenticate users to enter Privileged EXEC mode.
    Is this possible to do?
    I have been working on this for a while, now I have got to the point where I have to give in and ask for help.

    That's true, but I think Simon does not have an ISE neither.
    Simon, are you using NPS, IAS or any other vendor?
    If so, we would need to check the vendor's documentation to see how to send the privilege level 15 to the SW.

    Is there any command to use for test the communication beetween cisco 3560 switch and IAS server. I m trying to make work port based authentication.(XP client get vlan after authentication of user/computer) Now i have configured IAS server with basic EAP configuration and also switch have all nessesary 802.1x configs. (i suppose) So is there any command that i could use to test is connection OK from switct to IAS server.(access request)

  • ACS 5.3 Radius authentication with ASA and DACL

    I am trying to do Radius authentication on the ACS 5.3 for VPN access (cisco client) using a downloadable ACL with AD identity
    Clients are connecting to an ASA 5510 with image asa843-K8.bin
    I followed the configuration example on the Cisco site, but I am having some problems

    I am using my user which is member of the Network Admin Group.
    Am I missing something?

    Hello Stephen,
    As per the IP Pools feature, the ACS 5.x does not include such functionality. It is not on the ACS 5.x roadmap either as the recommended scenario would be to use a dedicated DHCP server.
    ACS 4.x included that functionality, however, it was not the best solution as the ACS returned the IP Address value as a RADIUS Attribute instead of acting as a real DCHP server.
    As per the IMEI and MISDN I am assuming you are referring to International Mobile Equipment Identity and Mobile Subscriber ISDN. Correct me if I am wrong.
    In that case it seems that the ACS 5.x should be able to Allow or Deny access based on Radius Attribute 30 (Called-Station-Id) and 31 (Calling-Station-Id).
    In that case you might want to use the End-Station Filters feature and use it as the condition for the Rule. The End-Station Filter feature uses CLI/DNIS where CLI is Radius Attribute 31 and DNIS is Attribute 30.
    I am assuming a Generic Username will be embedded on the devices request. In that case you will define which end-user devices will be granted access based on the above attributes.

    I have configured ASA for Cisco VPN client with RADIUS authentication using Windows 2003 IAS.
    All seems to be working I get connected and authenticated. However even I use user name and password from Active Directory when connecting with Cisco VPN client I still have to provide these credentials once again when accessing domain resources.
    Should it work like this? Would it be possible to configure ASA/IAS/VPN client in such a way so I enter user name/password just once when connecting and getting access to domain resources straight away?

    Hi Alex,
    It is working as it should.
    You can enable the vpn client to start vpn before logon. That way you login to vpn and then logon to the domain. However, you are still entering credentials twice ( vpn and domain) but you have access to domain resources and profiles.

  • VPN 3000 and Radius authentication/authorization

    hello.
    I have to configure RADIUS authentication
    with a VPN 3000 concentrator.
    I'm completely new with this product
    (the concentrator).
    It seems that, if I want to perform authentication
    of username and password with Radius, then I also have to download the entire VPN configuration from the same Radius, using the attibute set loaded with the appropriate dictionary.
    am I rigth with this supposition?
    I mean: should be possible to authenticate only an username and password externally on RADIUS, while continuing to mantain the user (or group) VPN configuration locally in the concentrator?

    No, downloading the entire VPN configuration from the RADIUS server is not necessary. If you are new to configuring VPN's on concentrators or the Concentrator iself, having a look at the support page will be agood idea.     I am new to Wireless Lan configuration with Aironet products (first project). I am configuring an Access Point for a small LAN and i can not get local radius authentication working. The password always fails if I try:

    although the password is matching..........
    another thing is that in the configuration, it always defaults to 'nthash' mode. is this normal? in other words if i type:

    Just as an update.......I set this up authenticating to an external (ACSNT) Radius server and it authenticates successfully. But still will not for the local dbase. My goal is to use the Corporate ACS as primary and the local as backup. I think my problem has to do with the Radius attributes 24 (State) and 80 (Message Auth). I also think that it points back to the NTHash stuff. Please advise as I am not new security practices and wireless, but I am new to Cisco Wireless networking.

  • MacBook Pro will not connect to RADIUS authenticated SSID

    We are having problems with MacBook Pros and a MacBook Air not connecting to our wireless network. We have successfully connected hundreds of iPads and multiple other machines. All of the non-working machines are running OS X 10.9.5. The MacBook Air is brand new.
    We have a centrally managed wireless system made by Avaya. The SSID they are trying to connect to is protected by a password and RADIUS authentication. The SSID is called KT_MAC.
    A typical scenario looks like this:
    I add the device's MAC address to the RADIUS server (add it to the MAC OU in AD and add it to the MACAuth group)
    I attempt to connect to the KT_MAC SSID
    I am prompted for the password, which I type in
    Sometimes it connects on the first try, but usually it doesn't.  It will say something along the lines of Unable to join KT_MAC network or something.
    I then attempt to connect to the KT_MAC SSID again
    I am prompted for the password again, which I type in again
    It generally connects on this second attempt but not always.
    We have tried resetting the PRAM as well as deleting the saved profiles from each machine. Any guidance you can provide would be appreciated. Thank you.

    Eventually ended up on the phone with an Apple Engineer through Educational Support. They reported to us there are known issues with some RADIUS connections and didn't have any solutions beyond installing the new version of OS X 10.10 Yosemite
    We did install 10.10 on a spare machine and it did appear to solve the issue but was still in beta at the time.
