[RAID Install] Can't install Grub - SOLVED

Me & a friend are building a local serveur on Arch (32-bit) for ~10 PCs in our association (half of them allready having AL Wink )
This server will basically have 2 main fonctions :
- NFS/YP server for a few PCs we've built under Arch for young people here
- backing up a few PCs we're using for the association.
Machine is HP with a PIV 1.7GHz, 512Mb SDRAM for now, & a single HDD IDE controller.
We got two UDMA 160GB HDD (Hitachi ) as we planned right from the start to improve on data security (& speed when possible).
I've set up partition as following :
- hda1 & hdb1, 100 Mb both, raid-1 for /boot
- hda2 & hdb2, 2 Gb both, raid-1 for swap
- hda3 & hdb3, 10 Gb both, raid-1 for /
- hda4 & hdb4, 150 Gb both, raid-1 + LVM2
Now I'm setting up Arch 0.7.2-20061104 (latest ISO from tpowa Smile ) , & everything went allright up to the point I wanna install the bootloader (might be the 10th time I set up AL this year)
To do so I'm following "Install Grub on the Primary Hard Drive (and save the RAID config)" (wich I may edit if I succeed this raid setup) with a look on "Reinstalling GRUB" both on the wiki.
1st I'm not 100% sure about mkinitcpio.conf config when it comes to raid; I've added 'raid' to HOOKS + a line just like on "Configuring mkinitpcio" :
Code:
md=2,/dev/hda3,/dev/hdb3
Edited grub/menu.lst, installed the kernel... but I want to chroot in order to install Grub I can't mount /dev :
Code:
# mount -o bind   /dev      /mnt/dev
keeps complaining about wrong fs type.
I chrooted anyway and launched grub :
grub> root (hd0,<TAB>
Error 21: Selected disk does not exist
I'm purely stuck here with no idea about what went wrong
If someone has spare time & knowledge, it'd be very nice indeed (our schedule says we begin to play with the network services 2morrow
EDIT : corrected the mkinitpcio.conf "md=2" line.

About install gub, I got it thanks to warnaud :
/dev/mdN was unexistent until I launched
# makedevs
Thereafter grub found the disk :
# grub
grub> root (hd0,0)
grub> setup (hd0)
grub> quit
"save the RAID config" was allready done at this point.
Guess I misconfigured something in mkinitcpio.conf / menu.lst, 'cause when I boot it says :
:: Running Hook [raid]
:: Running Hook [filesystems]
:: Loading root filesystem module...-e
Attempting to create root device '/dev/md2'
ERROR: Failed to parse bloc device name for '/dev/md2'
    unknown
ERROR: root fs cannot be detected.
Kernel panic...
mkinitcpio misconfiguration maybe.
From wiki :
First add the raid hook to the HOOKS list in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
OK :
HOOKS="base udev autodetect ide raid filesystems"
Add some Kernel Parameters is less clear, or it maybe after reading "Installing_with_Software_RAID_or_LVM" that says to list the devices in the ROOT array ?
Kernel Parameters: Specify all your md arrays with md= parameter: (only adding the raid array you're booting from is enough)
add the following to the kernel line in grub/menu.lst:
Example: md=0,/dev/sda3,/dev/sda4 md=1,/dev/hda1,/dev/hdb1
working example: kernel /vmlinuz26beyond root=/dev/md0 ro md=0,/dev/sda1,/dev/sdb1
So should one list its / or its /boot array ?

  • Server Install: "Can't install Server Essentials"

We just purchased a brand new Mac Pro to use as a server, however the Server app refuses to install. The app was purchased directly from the app store, and when I run the installer I get the error "Can't install Server Essentials because it is not currently available from the Software Update server."
I read in another thread that this was solved by creating a new network location and removing the old one. This solution did not work for me. I've tried connecting via both wifi and ethernet and neither solved it (there is also no firewall, so the domain isnt blocked or anything- the app store and software update both seem to work fine).
I also read that you need to install server on 10.7.0 or it won't work. Well, that is completely unnacceptable since the Mac Pro came with 10.7.3 preinstalled, and the recovery partition will only install the most recent version. The direct links to the ServerEssentials.pkg are also dead, so that solution is out. Any ideas?

Same problem. Just redeemed my Apple Developer code. I'd also like access to the actual .DMG or .PKG files for the install but it seems that the AppStore revoked that capability and the old methods to access those files no longer work. Come on guys...

  • Company Portal (xap) wp8 Apps failing to install (Can't install)

    Hi,
We have set up our company portal on windows mobile devices in order to distribute company apps.
However we have created some cordova applications to be deployed via the company portal.
These applications work when we deploy them via  visual studio etc. However when we try to install them via the company portal we get the error "can't install company app"
we have tried signing the apps but these still doesn't seem to work...
Is there a step we have missed. Or what is required from an app to be able to be installed via the company app portal.
    Thanks a lot.

I know this is old but I’m trying to clean up old posts. Did you ever solve this? If so it would be good if you could post the solution to assist others. If not, at this stage,
as nobody has answered, I would recommend that you call Intune support.
You will find your local Intune support number here

  • Adobe AIR problems keeping Muse from installing - Can't install, uninstall or fix AIR

I'm on a iMac 27 inch running 10.9.2. Believe it or not I've been all over the place and back for 2 days.
I can't get Adobe AIR on my computer.  Adobe Muse support told me that AIR is the reason that Muse won't go onto my computer and sends me to support for AIR, which promptly told me that I needed to come to the forum for help and would not connect me back to the support for Muse.
I have read some of the stuff here but it's not helping. I was having the issue that Matthew was having here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3628339.
So I manually uninstalled by throwing these items in the trash as instructed by Chris (because I'm afraid of Terminal):
    /Applications/Utilities/Adobe AIR Application Installer.app
    /Applications/Utilities/Adobe AIR Uninstaller.app
/Library/Frameworks/Adobe AIR.framework (the 3 I found where NOT in this folder. I searched and found them in Spotlight and later when I "put back" from the trash it put them somewhere with Flash CS6)
    /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/AIR
Then I rebooted the computer and tried to install the new installation that support gave me in a chat window today and again got this error AGAIN:
    Sorry, an error has occurred.
An error occurred while installing Adobe AIR. Installation may not be allowed by your administrator. Please contact your administrator.
Then I tried installing Adobe Muse that I was also given today because CC app keeps "installing" and saying it's on my computer but it is not.  This says that it is going to install AIR because it needs it to work and I thought MAYBE it would be successful but it is not.  It gives this error message:
"Sorry, an error has occurred. The application could not be installed. Try installing it again.  If the problem persists, contact the application author Error #2038".
Incidentally, as somewhat indicated above,  I have put the items that I manually uninstalled which were in the trash, back where they were, since it didn't fix anything.
A few other things to note:
    1.  I don't seem to have AIR in the Adobe AIR.framework in my System Library folder at all. There are however three variations of those in another folder somewhere with CS6 Flash (I can't find it again sorry)
    2.  I don't have that thing about "Automatic graphics switching" in my Energy Saving Panel.
    3.  I did Chris said in this post (http://forums.adobe.com/message/4053110#4053110) and this is what it said:
Adobe AIR is currently not installed
    Installing version 4.0.0.1390

    Thank you in advance.

I finally got it to work!
Marydesigns, you may have already this, but this is what worked for me:
From http://helpx.adobe.com/air/kb/troubleshoot-air-installation-mac-os.html (not sure how i never stumbled across that page during the past few days)
-Using Finder, navigate to your Applications folder and look for a file (not a folder) named "Adobe".  If one exists, rename or delete it.
-Open the Terminal application in your Applications/Utilities folder.  Run the following commands:
      sudo chmod -R ug=rwx,o=rx /Applications/Adobe
    sudo chmod -R ug=rwx,o=rx ~/Library/Application\ Support/Adobe/
    sudo chmod -R ug=rwx,o=rx ~/Library/Application\ Support/Adobe/AIR/
    sudo chmod -R ug=rwx,o=rx /Users/Shared/Library/Application\ Support/Adobe/
NOTE: Terminal may state that some of these directories don't exist. Don't worry about it. It told me that 2 of them didn't exist, but this process still fixed my problem
-Next, adjust the ownership of a particular folder. Run the following two commands in Terminal, noting the user name response of the "whoami" command.  Replace username with your username in the next command:
    1. whoami
    2. sudo chown -R username:staff ~/Library/Application\ Support/Adobe/AIR/
Again, Terminal may alert you that this directory doesn't exist. Just ignore it.
Close the Terminal application and rerun the Adobe AIR  installer.
That got AIR working. I was then able to install Muse manually (not with Creative Cloud) by downloading it from http://adobe.com/go/muse_latest_mac
    Hopefully this works for you!

  • BS windows 7 pre installed, can't install fresh one

Hey, i've bought a thinkpad sl510 with windows 7 pro. First thing i did was format it as it has millions of useless demos and about 10 thousands processes running. Now, as that thing doesn't come with any cd at all, i downloaded some official windows 7 iso (not oem) and then some "not so official" oem version of it. but either way, i can't get any to install with the key i have PAID for...
WHERE can I get lenovo's official CLEAN windows installation files???
Does such a thing even exist?
How do you guys manage to make a clean install on those machine?

There was/is a recovery partition from which you can re-install a clean Windows.
Hopefully you have not deleted that.
If you have, you will need to call support and have them ship a DVD to you.
The retail CD will not pick up and use the SLIC license that is embedded in the BIOS.  You will need an OEM DVD.

  • Adobe AIR Not installed, can't install!

My security package tells me that Air needs updates, so  I must've had it at one time, but I can't install the latest version and have followed all the instructions to  overcome this - except that it can't be found!
I've been having trouble downloading stuff lately (unrelated) although I may need it to do so.
Anyone have any bright ideas? I'd be very grateful as this has been going on some time and it's beyond a joke!
    Many thanks
    Moot

I'm actually using a Windows 7(32bit) Professional Edition with SP1. I have follow the instruction on the link you gave me but there is still the same problem.
This is the install log I found on my computer :
Bootstrapper begin with version 2.5.0.16600 on Win x86
    No installed runtime detected
    Begin runtime download from http://airdownload.adobe.com/air/3/nai/windows6.1/x86/installer
    Download success
    Begin signature download from http://airdownload.adobe.com/air/3/nai/windows6.1/x86/installer.p7
    Download failure: Unable to connect
Bootstrapper end with exit code 11

  • Mac Mini fresh 10.4 install - can't install bundled applications.

Okay so I just got my first Mac last week . It's a Mac mini 1.83 Core 2 Duo. It came with Tiger and ILife bundle, and a Leopard upgrade dvd.
I installed Leopard (erasing the original install) only to find that there is no iLife on it. I tried installing the bundled apps onto leopard using the original dvd's and that kept failing as well.
Now I'm trying to reinstall the OS X 10.4 + bundle (my original grey cds) so that i can upgrade to Leopard and keep the iLife bundle.
    1. I erased the drive using disk utility on the Tiger cd's, and reinstalled Tiger along with the bundled apps. This didnt work completely - when it got to the bundled apps, it failed at the end saying install failed - try again. And it doesnt even give me an option to exit - just keep trying the install of disc 2 again and again. I tried this another time and it still didnt work.
    2. I tried again from scratch- erasing the drive and reinstalling - this time installing only Tiger without the bundled apps. Tiger installed ok. I did a software update, then tried installing the bundled apps manually. Still it wont install them.
    3. I tried installing bundled apps again after #2 failed - still no luck.
The install log says it failed when doing pre-flight check of iDVD. But the second time it failed it was doing a pre-flight check of iPhoto.
Does anyone have any ideas what I could be doing wrong with this thing? I've erased and installed this thing like 6 times already and it still wont do a proper install of the bundled apps!

Ah, apologies, for some reason I had thought you were in the UK. Apple Canada don't have quite the same issues of remoteness as Apple UK, so it surprises me further that you have suffered the support issues you have. One of what I would have always considered to be Apple's deficiencies however is that they generally channel their feedback and support via stores and phone contact, rather than providing email or internal corporate contact details. It makes it easy to call for help when needed, but not so easy to let them know what you think about the help you actually received. Calling the phone support line and asking for the call to be escalated up is probably the best approach, and if nothing else will give a better insight, since in my experience most of the customer support calls are handled rather more constructively than your experience so far would suggest.
Ultimately, only you know exactly what your objective is of course, but if you had reached the point that it was clear a Mac was the right system to buy for your parents, then I suspect that you're right, your objective would not be likely to be best served by returning this system and switching to something else. As such, the short-term frustration of having to deal with this now, but having a working and fully installed mini for them to use in the longer term would perhaps be better than extricating yourself from the frustration now and thus gaining in the short term, only to have your parents cope with a less ideal system, even one where instead of an emphasis on ease of use, they would need to focus rather more on security, virus protects etc in a Windows system.
It does, of course, leave a bit of a bitter taste if you were to keep the mini and effectively let Apple get away with such poor support. The only problem is, however, that reacting to it by returning the system hurts them very little, and in reality perhaps does more to impede your own objectives.
Whatever you decide, bear in mind that however poor some of the staffers on the phone can be at times, and how unhelpful some of the staff in the stores, Apple Discussions here is often a very good way to get help and support from people who are just ordinary Apple users. We're not always able to help - there are some questions asked here which don't get responses, but by far and away most do! There are also Mac User Groups in many areas where help can be found (and often a helping hand and a copy of an install disc to help alleviate the frustration of waiting on Apple to post one out). Local Apple stores typically also have 'genuis' bars where help can be obtained, even for equipment out of warranty, and while the quality of support isn't always what one might hope for, it can be truly excellent.
In the end of course the fact that the quality of Apple support may be typically rather better than you have experienced, it doesn't excuse the bad experiences. Often, however, their products go a long way to make up for it!
Best wishes in whatever you choose to do.

  • Windows vista installed, can't install Mac OS XLeopard

I have a macbook and am trying to install a clean version of leopard. this macbook had vista installed on it. I have tried to do a clean install of mac leopard. The message comes up" it cannot be installed on this computer.
As far as I know there is no problem with the macbook it has a 120 gig hdd. this does not show in the startup disc options when I go into the disc utilities using the leopard disc.
    can anybody help please?
    thanks

    Greetings,
I'd take the CD/DVDs that came with the Macbook, or a full retail version of Leopard, and place it in the drive and start the machine up holding down the C key until you see the spinning gear looking thing, then let go and let it boot up - it takes a bit of time.
Then at the first screen, after it's booted, say continue, and at the next screen you will find a Utility menu at the top. Click on that and select Disk Utility and select the hard disk - usually the first item in the left pane of Disk Utility, from there do an erase, and at that time you can partition it, or let it be all one partition and select a format HFS +, or MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and give it a name.
That will erase the drive and get rid of the Windows infection. If you want to infect your Mac with Windows, then use Boot Camp after you do a complete install of Leopard, and do all of the available updates.
    That should get you going.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • R400 help, new W7 install, can't install needed drivers

My daughter's R400 Thinkpad was experiencing the blue screen and shutting down, restarting, etc, etc, etc. I tried the recovery options to no avail. The laptop came with no discs. So after sitting in a corner for months, I decided to attempt to fix it for her. After much research and screwing around, I managed to make a bootable USB stick with Windows 7 pro and booted the computer from it, and managed to get the OS installed. The W7 OS was downloaded from the MIcrosoft website, and verified with the code from the laptop. I figured once I had W7 loaded I could simply connect to the internet and download/update the drivers as needed... NOT. I can't connect to the internet because nothing works without drivers (my ignorant assumption anyway).
So, I thought that I would download the drivers onto my laptop and put them on a USB stick and just install them on hers... again, NOT. I can't access the USB stick.
Not sure what to do now. Help?

    Hi, Stude
Your daughter's ThinkPad should be able to install certain drivers by itself, such as USB. If you go to Device Manager, are the Universial Serial Bus controllers recognized? If not and the driver can't be updated, then you may want to save the files on to a CD and load the drivers on the machine that way.
    Hope it helps,
    Adam

  • Nvidia driver installed, can't install intel driver

    Hi,
I have a w520 laptop with nvidia optimus.
Before installing  Linux, I disabled optimus and set graphics to discrete graphics in bios.
Now I want to install intel graphics too and use it from time to time and perhaps use optimus with bumblebee later. The problem is that I cannot install the intel driver.
    When I run
    pacman -Sy xf86-video-intel
pacman tries to install libgl package as a dependency which is in conflict with nvidia-utils and asks for removing it.
Any ideas what to do? I guess nvidia card will not work without this package. Is there any way to have both of them. (I am not shooting for optimus yet, I just want to make them work separately, the next step is to install bumblebee)

shayan wrote:The problem is lots of package are dependent on it ( including gnome3) and I cannot remove all of them.
nvidia-utils-bumblebee provides nvidia-utils, so you can remove nvidia-utils ignoring dependencies (read pacman's man page).

  • If I already have APEX installed can I install 10g Standard Edition too?

can I have both running on the same machine?

If you are referring to Oracle XE database as opposed to APEX then the answer is yes. Just be sure to assign the Oracle Standard Edition to a different "Oracle Home".

let me know if you know importance of perl?A question which has nothing to to with the subject of this forum. But I do understand that sometimes we sometimes ask off-topic questions because we reasonably assume that some members of the community might have some expertise in this area.

  • [SOLVED]Grub-Install can't Find Kernel and/or initrd, mkinitcpio Fails

    Hi all,
I have recently installed Arch on my new build (with UEFI firmware). I successfully set up xorg, alsa/pulseaudio, xfce, etc... things were looking pretty good. Then, I tried to blacklist the pcspkr in order to silence the annoying beep every time I selected "Log Out" inside xfce. I executed
    mkinitcpio -p linux
and was presented with the following errors:
==> Building image from preset: 'default'
    -> -k /boot/vmlinuz-linux -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf -g /boot/initramfs-linux-fallback.img -S autodetect
==> ERROR: specified kernel image does not exist: `/boot/vmlinuz-linux'
==> Building image from preset: 'fallback'
    -> -k /boot/vmlinuz-linux -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf -g /boot/initramfs-linux-fallback.img -S autodetect
==> ERROR: specified kernel image does not exist: `/boot/vmlinuz-linux`
There were no such files anywhere on /boot. I tried doing
    find / -name vmlinuz-linux
and nothing was found. I wasn't quite sure why that was happening, but I tried uninstalling/reinstall grub (grub-common and grub2-efi-x86_64). I installed grub to /boot using
    grub-install --directory=/usr/lib/grub/x86_64-efi --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot --bootloader-id="Arch Linux" --boot-directory=/boot --recheck --debug
and then generated /boot/grub/grub.cfg. I tried rebuilding the initramfs again but got the same error. I was tired and frustrated so I removed the old grub efi entry with
    efibootmgr -b 0 -B
    and then went to sleep.
I didn't have the chance to turn the computer back on until tonight... I was then presented with a grub2 shell. Since I didn't know where the kernel/initrd were located I tried
    set root=(hd1,gpt1)
    chainloader +1
    but grub told me
    error: invalid EFI file path
So that's about it. It appears that grub-mkconfig is having trouble locating the kernel/initrd so it doesn't make any entries, dropping me right into a shell. I've tried booting up with my installation USB and chrooting in and reinstalling grub again but nothing seems to work. So what I'd like to try to do is just boot up into my system and then modify add the grub boot entries entries I want... but I just can't figure out what's causing all these issues.
Sorry if I mess up any terminology... still learning the ropes here. Thanks for any input.

Probably because you have a separate boot partition (not just the 512 MB "UEFISYS" FAT32 partition), which you forgot to mount (in fstab).
    Post your /etc/fstab.
    Thank you for your reply!
However, I do not have a separate boot partition apart from the "UEFISYS" partition. Here is my fstab:
    # UUID=3ec307aa-0ead-4d33-b292-42bbe783d6ee
    /dev/sda2 / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1
    # UUID=B192-6C57
    /dev/sda1 /boot vfat rw,relatime,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=cp437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro 0 2
When I first looked at the fstab I saw that both of the entries repeated themselves. This was because I had even tried reformatting /boot so I had to generate a new fstab, but for some reason I used ">> /mnt/etc/fstab" rather than "> ..."
    So I executed
    genfstab /mnt > /mnt/etc/fstab
and reinstalled grub, but still no difference... mkinitcpio fails and I reboot to a grub shell.
