RAM cards for Intel iMac 2.8Ghz versus 2.8Ghz Extreme

Hi everyone,
I've just bought 4GB of RAM from Crucial to upgrade my year old iMac. Once I had placed my order I noticed that they recommended different cards for the machines with Intel 2.8GHz and 2.8GHz Extreme chips. I don't know what the difference in the memory is but they must have been different somehow as one was about $20 more expensive.
Anyway, I bought the ones for the 2.8GHz Extreme as thats what I thought I had (that's what I paid for anyway!) but I've just checked in System Profiler and there is no mention of my processor being 'Extreme' or in fact anything other than an Intel Core 2 Duo with a speed of 2.8GHz.
So my questions are:
a) Have I been ripped off by Apple and my machine isn't 'Extreme' at all - how can I tell?
b) Will the RAM I bought work on my machine whatever one it is? The RAM is certainly the correct type, i.e. number of pins etc.
Thanks for anyone that can help. If you have one of the 2.8GHz Extreme machines from last August, could you have a look in your system profiler and see if it mentions it being extreme?
Thanks again,
Neil

This is very easy, if you purchased your machine prior to April 2008 it is either the 2.4 or 2.8 machine. To find out for sure which one, go to the System Profiler and look under hardware you will see something very similar to this:
*Hardware Overview:*
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: IM71.007A.B03
SMC Version: 1.21f4
Serial Number: XXXXXXXX
This is from my machine I ommitted the serial number. An even more simple way to find out is to look at the box it was shipped in, I'm assuming it is NOT a refurb model as they ship in plain brown boxes.
If you purchased your machine after April 2008 it is a little more difficult but still pretty easy. Your System Profiler will be very similar but the Bus Speed will be 1066 MHz.
The memory specification for all the mid 2007 Aluminum iMacs is the same. Use:
667 MHz, PC2-5300, DDR2 compliant (also referred to as DDR2 667) popular brands are Crucial, Kingston, OWC, etc.
If it is a early 2008 (Bus Speed 1066MHz MHz) then you will need the PC2-6400 memory chips, again all the early 2008 Aluminium iMacs use the same memory chips.

  • Capture Card for Intel Based iMac?

    Hey. Here's my story.
I have a 20" iMac in my room next to my 19" HD Sylvania TV. I recently received $150 for amazon.com for my birthday and I'm looking to buy a capture card that will work cooperatively with my iMac and Final Cut Express.
Are there capture cards (internal or external) that are available for my iMac? If so, link me.
By the way, I will be using this for Halo 3 Montages

    Hi SillyRabbit894
There no card slot or space in the iMac's so you'll need an external capture devise.

  • Using an imac G3 as second monitor for intel imac

I just purchased a 20 inch intel imac and was curious if I could use my old imac G3 as the second monitor.
I already have the DVI to VGA adapter to use in the mini DVI port on the intel imac. Is there an adapter that I can use to plug this cable into the VGA out on the back of my old G3 imac?
intel duo imac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The VGA port on your old iMac is output, not input,
so what you are suggesting wouldn't work.
To do it, you'd have to take apart the G3 and hack a
connection from the gfx card to the display to
work... probably more trouble than it's worth, given
the quality & res of the old g3 displays.
Thanks for the quick response. Looks like I will have to pick up a second monitor.

  • Maximum RAM on 20'' Intel iMac

Hi! I've got a  20'' Intel iMac with 2GB RAM. What is the maximum amount of memory I can put in it? Thanks in advance!

    Hi.
I have a white iMac 20-inch (Late 2006) with Intel core2Duo 2.16GHZ Processor and I want to upgrade my memory. My system reports for memory these:
    Memory Slots:
      ECC:          Disabled
    BANK 0/DIMM0:
      Size:          1 GB
      Type:          DDR2 SDRAM

I have read a lot of things about this, but I was wondering which is the best choice for this upgrade.
    My questions are:
-Can I install DDR2 SDRAM or SO-DIMM DDR2 or both?
(Here apple writes and copability for DDR3 SDRAM for my model???)
-I have read that iMacs with installed 4GB Memory (2GB+2GB )have better response and speed from these with 2GB+1GB Memory. Is that true?
-I have to looking for dual channel memory or not?
-Memory's speed must be 667MHZ or 800MHZ or both of them can be istalled to my machine (not at the same time)?
-My memory must have 200pin?Because SDRAM DDR2 have 240pin!
-And finally memory's voltage must be 1,5V or 1,8V?
    Pleasy can you help me?

  • GUID format needed to make bootable HD for intel iMac?

I have one brand new 1TB hard drive, and an old 250GB. Both Lacies.
I have a newish intel iMac and an old G4 tower.
Am I right in thinking that, in order to make a bootable clone for the iMac, I need to format the 1TB as GUID? Will I then not be able to boot from it on the G4?
Confused, and want to get this right. THANKS!

If you want to install OS X freshly to the drive then you need it to be partitioned using GUID to boot an Intel Mac. However, if you clone an existing Intel system to the drive then the drive can be partitioned using APM. However, an Intel version of OS X cannot be used to boot a PPC Mac. To accomplish what you want you need to partition the drive into two volumes - one will hold the clone of your Intel Mac and one will hold the clone of your PPC Mac.
You may need to re-partition the drive as it is. It may already be partitioned GUID, so you will need to change that.
    Do the following:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to APM then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu to two (2) then use the sizing gadget to change the size of each volume to whatever you prefer. The default will be equal sized partitions. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volumes mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
At this point you can now clone your existing computers to their respective volumes. The cloned Intel system should boot the Intel Mac and the cloned PPC system should boot the G4. After you clone the systems you should of course verify the clones are good by starting each computer from their respective cloned systems.
You can clone using Disk Utilities Restore option or any backup utility that can create bootable clones such as Carbon Copy Cloner - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Too late to exchange for Intel iMac?

I've had my iMac G5 for roughly a month, and it's been great! However, I find myself wishing that I had gone ahead and bought the Intel iMac. Does anyone know if Apple will accept a return for no reason other than that? I bought directly from the Apple Store...
    iMac G5 iSight 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

"The question I would ask is...why did Apple go with Intel?"
Apple chose Intel over AMD for several big reasons. First, they wanted to have the best power to watt ratio for their laptops and Intel has that over AMD. The Pentium Ms run cooler and give better battery life than the Turion 64s.
Second, Apple wanted to be able to use Intel's motherboard R&D. AMD does not make MoBos, but Intel does and they are good ones.
AMD also laggs behind Intel when looking at the projected roadmaps. Yes, we all know AMD beats the pants off Intel right now, but Intel's roadmap is clearer and better than AMDs. That could change of course, but Apple needed to switch to Intel quickly and efficiently, and having a solid plan ahead of them was the better way to go.
Now that OS X and Apple apps are on schedule to go native x86, later iterations of the Mac line could indeed go AMD if they wanted to. Intel probably cut Apple a sweetheart deal to use there chips exclusively for a while, but Apple has shown the kind of adaptivity and flexibility that many PC manufacturers would love, but haven't been able to achieve.
BTW, I think Apple has dropped the ball on Boot Camp. Virtualization is the way to go, not dual booting. I hope that Boot Camp is a precursor to something more like Parallel's http://www.parallels.com/en/products/workstation/mac/A>Workstation that allows you to run Windows apps side by side without rebooting.
Running Windows natively might be a boon for gamers, but for professionals that rely on Windows only software, it would be a huge pain to reboot several times a day just to switch applications.

  • SATA Card for G5 Dual 1.8Ghz

I'm looking for an internal SATA card for my PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8Ghz. I've got a couple hard drives laying around that I wanted to RAID together with my Time Machine Backup drive. Instead of spending hours looking on Google, I figured I'd poll the masses.
Newegg.com has a ton but I want to make sure I get one that is compatible with my hardware.
    Thanks in advance!

The only sure thing is the Firmtek Seritek cards.
They are also the only ones that support boot to the connected drives.
Native OS X support is also an important point.
Firmtek also provides excellent tech support
After that, Highpoint has compatibles, and non compatibles.
They don't support boot, and, but can perform well enough.
If you take the path less taken, and get a card that uses generic Silicon Images drivers, then OS X support, and successful use, is highly variable (to say the least).

  • Is there a Hardware Verification Disk for Intel iMacs

I think that the past few Macs I've bought came with a model-specific CD or DVD that would boot the Mac and then check and verify hardware components.
Is there one for the new Intel iMacs ???
I never got one with mine...

Yeah, I got the two disks. I didn't realise that the hardware verification program is located somewhere on the first software install DVD. It was on its own separate disk the last time I noticed.
    Thanks to all who answered.

What GPU/graphics card is compatible for Intel DG965RY MB?

    Hello,
this forum is dedicated to MSI Retail products only. That is why we do generally not allow topics that deal with mainboards of other manufacturers. Nobody here can give you much advice on compatibility questions regarding a specific Intel Board anyway.
The best thing for you to do is to look for help in a forum for Intel products or in a general hardware forum. Or perhaps you can contact Intel directly whether or not there are any known compatibility problems with certain video cards.
Regarding MSI video cards, you can browse through the whole menu of models on this site:

  • 8GB Ram Upgrade for 27" iMac (Not Quad Core)

Hey guys, I have an iMac 27", not the quad core though. I want to know, what is the best UK retailer to buy 8GB of Ram for my iMac. I have 4GB at the moment, and I want to run FCP, and After Effects more efficiently, speed up Render time etc.
Where can I buy some from a shop that could be found in the Trafford Centre, so Curries/PC World , The Apple Shop, Selfridges, etc.
Any ideas about how much it would cost?
Also how much more would 16GB of RAM be?
    Is it easy to install?
    Thanks guys

Surf to http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/iMac and find the correct memory for your iMac.
    OWC ships worldwide.
Good prices. Not the lowest, but their service is worth it.

  • Use G5 iMac as external monitor/display for Intel iMac?

I have a 24" Intel iMac and a 20" G5 iMac (which is sort of mothballed now).I was wondering if it is possible to use the older iMac as an external monitor, mainly to save the expense of buying a "proper" external display when there seems to be a perfectly usable one sitting there in the G5 iMac.

    translate.google.com.
Actually, it didn't translate very well. But the instructions are basically how to wire up an adapter cable. The G5 iMac appears to use standard DVI signals, so you just need to make a DVI cable to plug in to the internal connector. The table between pages 7 and 8 is what you want. If you've used a soldering iron around electronic devices before, that table is pretty much all you need. The picture of the backside on page 9 is neat. Using the ethernet connector hole to route the wiring. Almost looks like it came from the factory that way.

  • Is There A Free Workshop Manual For Intel-iMacs ?

I have downloaded Workshop Manuals/Instructions (not necessarily official ones!) for previous iMacs.
Does anybody know of a site providing FREE DIY information for the Core Duo iMac?

    Hi Steve.
I have only looked at G3 and G5 manuals.
However, you will find some G4 iMac manuals half way down the huge page on this link:-

I don't know how useful they will be as I haven't looked at them.

  • I have ordered RAM chips for my Imac 21.5-inch, Mid 2011 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 (2x 4GB) from Other World Computing and they don't work.

I have tried to install on two separate chip orders.  One was the initial order and the other set was the replacement chips.  I followed all the installation instructions Apple has on their site.  I have even watched a few videos to make sure.  I have bought RAM chips before for my Macbook Pro and they work fine.  Am I purchasing the wrong RAM chips?  Here is the type of RAM chips I ordered... 8.0GB (2x4.0GB Kit) PC3-10600 DDR3 1333MHz SO-DIMM 204 Pin CL9 SO-DIMM.

That appears to be the correct dimms:
    204-pin PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
Whether yours follow any additional apple requirments is another question.  Was there any mention about apple compatibility from the place you bought them?
If they aren't working they are probably bad or missing some additional apple requirement.  But try reversing them first or using one at a time.
FYI, OWC sells that stuff too (definitely apple compatible).  And if you follow that link you will again see you have the correct specs.
