RAM for oracle on linux

512 MB RAM is mandatory for installing oracle 9 on linux 8.
Thanks,

Akshat

Hi,
When we use some processes that uses a lot of Linux filesystem (not direct I/O or Automatic Storage mangement) the operating system uses the "cached" RAM memory.
Example :- If you taking a backup of on linux using tar, since based on your Sufficient RAM size, the Linux File System is going to be used and Free Memory goes to Zero (0), when you remove the tar file the Cache Memory moves to Free Memory. During some process of work the Free memory will be reduced.
Cached RAM is also considered as free, and will be used by OS when it needs. Oracle processes prefers use Swap Space (allocated).
Coming to the Point " limit the size of Cached Area" is not available in Linux as per my knowledge. Never experienced.
Try for this
Execute "/proc/sys/vm/drop_caches" => which will move cached memory to free.
Further I did not have much experience to comment out the problem. Let's see the comments from other friends too.

  • Adding RAM for Oracle 9i

    Hi,
I have an oracle database 9iR2 installed in my server (32 bits processor, 4GB ram). And I want to add more RAM for oracle database. It is possible? and do I need to do any setting for the previous oracle instance to fit the newly added RAM (Swap space)?
    Thank you.
    ~ vincent.

    Hello,
yes, you can add more RAM without any problem. Take into account that if the O.S. it's windows 32b. , it will only see 3,3 GB (unless using PAE). Linux OS has no problem with that.
You don't have to make any previous settings or changes in the database. Just add RAM. After you've added the RAM, the database just will continue using the same amount as before. You'll have to change this modifying all the memory related parameters (SGA, ...)

In a nutshell, you install the lowest version (10.2.0.1 or 10.2.0.2, which ever is lower for your Grid Control platform), and then apply the 10.2.0.5 patch according to the readme. That should not normally take more than a day.

That can be found using the self-help portal: http://otn.oracle.com -> Products : Enterprise Management (left edge menu). In the 'Product Focus' area, you will notice 'Application Management' which will lead you to the appropriate data sheets and supporting information.

  • Driver issue for Oracle Enterprise Linux

    Hi All,
I have just installed Oracle Enterprise Linux. I was not able to access network. After doing lspci -- i found that my ethernet conrtoller : Atheros Communications AR8151 Gigabit Ethernet.
Can any one tell how to install driver for this ?

    What is your output of:
    <pre>
    lsb_release -d
    uname -r
    </pre>
What kernel driver is in use or loaded regarding your Ethernet card when you check the output of lspci -v"?
Note that Oracle Linux just like any other Red Hat Enterprise Linux is not designed for typical consumer grade Laptops and Desktop systems.
Does your computer vendor provide any driver software for Enterprise Linux? You might be able to find 3rd party driver support using http://elrepo.org/tiki/tiki-index.php as a temporary yum software repository. Probably kmod-atl1 or similar.

  • Use more than 2 GB ram for oracle

I have 16 GB ram but I only can use 2 GB of that for oracle database , how can i increase that ???

Don't merely go for increasing the size for Oracle (SGA) Memory. You need to keep collect the usage/statistics of your Oracle SGA, for any contention/or slow performance.
Until and unless users/clients reports that their reports/programs/queries are running slow, then think of increasing memory for Oracle. Moreover, instead of anticipating that the user reports the problem, you from your side need to check the hits of the memory allocated for Oracle.
By the way, you didn't specify your Database Version and OS Details.
If assumed, you are on Oracle 10g, then please take a look at the below Oracle Documentations links.

  • Filesystem Suggestions for Oracle on Linux

Hello. We've been running Oracle on Solaris with Veritas Volume Manager (w/ qio) for about 4 years now and we are gearing up for going Oracle (9i) on Linux (AS). Since we are just getting started I wanted to run through setting up a preliminary test machine and Oracle install (I.E., we don't want to spend too much $ just yet).
Can anyone supply some feedback on the various filesystems that come with Redhat or that are available from the open source community (raw, ext3fs, xfs, reiserfs)? Eventually we may look at things like Veritas for Linux or OCFS, but for setting up a initial testbed, might yall recommend some pros and cons, perhaps some performance estimates of going raw, versus the various linux filesystems? Also, is there a good document available for setting up raw partitions on linux for oracle? Any and all feedback would be appreciated.

    Hi,
Keep in mind, if you need to use large amount of data, with databank files bigger than 2GB, some people consider the reiserfs the better option. Pther way ext3 is a good one.

  • Recommended sound card for Oracle Redhat Linux 64 bit?

    Dear Experts,
I'm trying to install the latest Oracle Redhat 5.
64 bit. On a certified Asus motherboard.
It will be a dual boot windows/Linux machine.
And I'm having an awful time with the sound card for my new server.
(It will be used for learning, at home. It's important to
have sound for some instructional videos that I will also watch.)
Other installs, sound has installed and worked fine.
I believe it's partially because the sound came directly off
    the motherboard in those cases.
But with this new server, it came with a sound card, no onboard.
The sound card works with windows. But not with Linux.
I've been swapping three sound cards in and out, trying to get
one to work. Each has some partial success, but none meet all
    of the requirements (below).
What is really frustrating is that I want the sound to go
to the green headphone jack on the front of the computer case.
To do this, there is a cable that connects the sound card, to
    the front of the chassis.
The existing sound card that I have, has a connector for this.
It is an "HD audio", or an AC 97 connector. There two rows of
five pins, with one pin blocked up, so that the connector is
inserted in the correct manner. The cord is hard wired to the case.
You can see some images of the pins and the cords here:
    http://support.creative.com/kb/showarticle.aspx?sid=14133

    http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=27289176
You would figure that whether the connector existed or not would be a standard
feature that would be listed for sound cards. But it's rare to find it listed anywhere.
When I went to the computer store, I had to open all the boxes to see if it
was there or not!!!! Manufacturers, this is not that difficult!!
At this point, after a couple of days of struggle, I just want to buy a
simple sound card that works right out of the box.
    Here are the requirements:
    - gets instantly recognized by Linux (Oracle Redhat 5) 64 bit, and plays sound
with the standard Linux drivers. I believe I have all of the drivers installed,
because a few cards do play with them automatically. During installation, I
    installed Every package available.
    - no installation of special Linux drivers required.
    - the other big requirment is that the card have output to an HD Audio,
or AC 97 connector, and will play music through the headphone jack.
(Believe it or not, I have one card that works fine out the back,
but won't work through the HD Audio. But it works fine in Windows)
    - will also work with Windows 64 bit.
Does anyone have any good sound card recommendations that will meet all these requirements?
    Thanks a lot!

Almost a year later... what have you been listening too? :-)
I have to admit that I'm not an expert for "sound" under Linux. I think you may find http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Page interesting. It also shows which sound cards are compatible.
ALSA is pretty much standard under Linux and stands for Advanced Linux Sound Architecture. Together with pulse-audio it provides audio and MIDI functionality to the Linux operating system and is, by default, also included in RHEL and other descendants. You can install pulseaudio support using the EPEL repository following the instructions at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL
    wget rpm -Uvh http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/5/x86_64/epel-release-5-4.noarch.rpm
    sudo rpm -Uvh epel-release-5-4.noarch.rpm
    yum list alsa* pulseaudio*
    Loaded plugins: downloadonly, rhnplugin, security
This system is not registered with ULN.
    ULN support will be disabled.

  • Where to download openmotif for oracle enterprise linux?

    Hello,
I am in the process of installing OEM Grid 10204 on Linux 2.6.18-128.el5 on Oracle Enterprise Linux. I am checking the packages required for installation and I need openmotif21-2.1.30-11. Where can I download openmotif21-2.1.30-11 and its dependencies from Oracle website? Can I download this package from another non-oracle website? Thank you in advance.

If you have Oracle Enterprise Linux media CD you can mount it, find the RPMs directory and install
    rpm -Uvh openmotif21-2.1.30-9.RHEL3.6.i386.rpm
or you can download the RPM for RHEL from internet, that should works too.

To reinforce what was mentioned in the first response...
There is no "urgent" in these forums and your statement that everyone must jump to your request just because you say so is rude.
You have been a viewer of these user-to-user OTN forums for more than a year. That is far long enough to know better.
For the future, whenever you have a critical business need for information, you will need to use your support credentials and log a SR ro Oracle Technical Support. Be prepared each time to prove to them that such a need exists.

  • Install Oracle Enterprise Linux

We have an old workstation (Dell Precision WorkStation 530 with 2.40 GHz Intel Xeon processor, 2 GB RAM, and 3 36-GB hard dirves) and I would like to use it as a test box for Oracle on Linux. I tried to install Oracle Enterprise Linux, but it stuck at the some point every time, either during installing libraries/modules or formatting disk. The place the installation stuck varies. It does give any error message, but the installation just stops there fore hours or days. I tried Oracle Enterprise Linux 4 DVD, Oracle Enterprise Linux 5 DVD, and latest image CDs downloaded form metalink. All have the same issue. That installation starts as normal, then slow down, then freeze. I tried installing Fedora Core on the box using CDs from a Linux book yesterday, but it was successful and worked fine. I am wondering where there are some hardware incompatibility or other issues associated with the box. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    George

    Hi, George.
I think you'll have to determine the motherboard and other periferals in your machine to find out which one is incompatible with OEL. The most probable culprit is the motherboard. Find out which model it is and Google, using the model and the term "Enterprise Linux" (or RHEL or Centos, they are all the same).
There may be workarounds, if it's indeed an incompatibility issue: settings in the CMOS Setup or advanced parameters for booting the installation -- usually related to the drives (HD, DVD, SATA mode etc) or to P'n'P periferals (USB, for instance).
