Random lines in PDF inserted in InDesign document

I have been generating PDF files from Alibre Design (MCAD) since 2005 with no problem. I 'print' the pages with the current Adobe Acrobat Pro and then place them in the pages of my magazine layout in InDesign.
Recently, when I place a PDF generated from Acrobat Pro, PDF Creator and one or two other PDF generating packages and place the PDF in InDesign, I find random and fairly thin files in most of the placed pages. But not all.
So far the lines have not appeared in the PDF files generated by the Export function in InDesign.
What I am worried about is the possibility of the lines showing up in the PDF generated by the Export function. That would force me to use Acrobat to generate TIFF files from the PDF files. A significant time sink if necessary.

No, it is not a screen artifact. It carries on through to the PDF file I publish as my magazine.
The workflow is 3D CAD to PDF, place the PDF in InDesign document then Exporting the document to the final PDF.
The lines are visible in InDesign, sometimes in the resulting Exported PDF and if one prints the PDF page the lines show up randomly on a laser printer.
Lines do get wider.
This would kill even a commercial print job.

  • Can I embed 3D PDFs in an InDesign document?

    "Can I embed 3D PDFs in an InDesign document and the export the document as a PDF with the 3D surviving the process?"

    3D PDFs are quite rare, and I've never actually viewed one, even though I work with PDFs all the time.
    However, I'm certain that InDesign has no concept of 3D artwork. Most images are not embedded but are linked.
    For these reasons, I think it would impossible for you to place it and export it, preserving the 3D.

  • How do I import multi-page PDFs into an indesign document?

    Note:  When I search for answers to this question on the adobe site, i encounter a broken link.
    I need to insert several multi-page PDFs such that they become one document that I am able to appy consistent control over.  Should I be doing this in indesign?  What is the best way to do this?

    If you don't want to use them in InDesign for any other purpose than to assamble them in one new PDF I would rather use Adobe Acrobat Pro than InDesign.
    In Acrobat Pro: Create new Deocument > Form multiple Files, select further what you need.

  • InDesign document export to PDF

    I have an InDesign document 680+ pages. I've been exporting
    using Control E (Windows XP) for two weeks, and all works
    beautifully. Today, trouble! The export results in a PDF document
    with text that is darker, fuzzier, larger...a complete mess. Plus,
    footers fail to appear in the PDF. The InDesign document looks OK,
    but the exported PDF is a mess!
    I'm' using CS3 Standard. Purchased 2 weeks ago, I've run all
    the updates.
    Help please!

  • Missing fonts in PDF placed in InDesign

    I was sent a PDF to make slight changes to it. Since the changes were so minor and relatively few, I thought it would be easiest to just place the pages of the PDF into an InDesign document and put white boxes over what needs to change.
    I just noticed the Preflight panel says I'm missing Arial and Times New Roman which I know I have. I tried doing "Find Font" to replace the missing Arial with my Arial, but "Change" is grayed out so I'm thinking the fonts must not be properly embedded in the PDF.
    I'm not sure if they have the original document the PDF came from (and if they do, it might be in Word). Is there a way I can fix this either in InDesign or with Acrobat?
    Or, if I don't fix it, do you think that the missing fonts will not print properly?

    You might be able to embed these fonts properly in the PDF. It isn't always successful, but in Preflight, open the fixups section and use the selection as in the screen shot. Then relink/replace the PDF in ID.

  • Export indesign document to pdf white strokes around text

    Hello there, I have this problem, I am exporting an indesign document to interactive pdf, and the problem seams to appear, when I open the created pdf in adobe reader x, it shows some of the text with white outlines, and the text looks very thick. When previewed in indesign, it looks perfect, text looks crisp. I also opened the pdf document with apples preview, and in preview it looks fine! But in adobe reader it looks horible, I tried adobe readers on other computers, and they all show up with the outline. What causes this anoying issue? plase help, thanks

    We'd have to see the file to know for sure, but this sounds like a transparency flattening issue. Thickened text is indicative of it being converted to outlines, whcih can happen when it interacts with transparency. It's not clear if your white lines are around theindividual glyphs, or around the entire areas. The latter is also a common flattenign artifact called "stitching" that shows up on screen and in low resoution printing.
    The first bit of advice is to keep your text at the top of the stacking order, above transparency, shadows, and other effects. It sometimes helps to have a top layer just for text. The way to eliminate these artifacts 100% of the time is to not flatten transparency at all, which is possible in Print PDFs, but alas, not in Interactive.

  • Embedding SWF file into an Indesign document and later export as PDF

    Hi to everybody,
    I am searching now since 3 days for good solution of my problem. First I wanna tell you that the problem is not just to convert a swf-file into a pdf.  I did this many times with all animations, page flip and stuff.My situation is the following:
    I have varios catalogues with  more or less 12 pages each in an indesign format. Now I created an animated scroll down menu, which appears on an "index-page". On the menu I created buttons. One button for each catalogue. So the idea of the whole thing is to open a document and an index page appears where you have the animated menu and you choose the catalogue you wanna see. Until here it is quite easy. I created a swf file of each catalogue with my animations (as the special page turnover e.g.). So that I just need von Object in with I can load the different swf-files of these catalogues. I already did the process. I linked the buttons to the different swf files and so. So the problem is now when it comes to convert the whole thing into a PDF. Of course I convert it first to swf and then to PDF. After converting it to swf it works 100% fine, but in PDF not, suddenly the swf-files of the catalogues disappear.
    So the summary is, that I don't know how to embed swf files into an indesign document, creat buttons and interactions next to swf file, then save it to another swf, and then to a pdf without losing the first swf files within the pdf.
    Hope I made my self clear would be too nice if someone could help me or if someone may have a better idea of realizing the whole project.

    Jeffrey,
    Thank you for the answer. As you have written:
    I will also add that the ID's play mode contol [plays once] [repeat play] does not always control the file once in Acrobat.
    I presume you mean version of ID older than CS4 or version of Acrobat Reader older than 9.1
    It that is the case I will strongly recommend my visitors to upgrade to this version.
    I hope that would work.
    Thanks again.

  • I also have a .csv file with the name of a jpeg in one column and a text description of each jpeg in a second column. Is there a way to automatically insert one jpeg (photo) and its corresponding text, each pair on one page, into a Indesign document?

    I also have a .csv file with the name of a jpeg in one column and a text description of each jpeg in a second column. Is there a way to automatically insert one jpeg (photo) and its corresponding text, each pair on one page, into a Indesign document?

    I would also recommend to write the description into the meta data. This would allow to place a text frame above the image and it is possible to add meta information and file name automatically together with the image, when you place it or even in a prepared template.
    Meta data information can be written easily in Bridge in the Meta File Workspace.

  • How do I locate the longest line in an InDesign document?

    Is there a script that locates the longest line in an InDesign document?

    Hi Duke;
    The following is something quick and dirty that looks at the number of characters in a line only. This ignores what the others were saying in regards to 'physical space' which may include kerning, scaling, character widths etc, and it only looks at 1 text frame so you might have to expand on it if you want to do a whole document.
    var myLines = app.activeDocument.textFrames.item(0).lines;
    var myLongestLine = 0;
    var myLongestLineGroup = "";
    for (var i = 0; i < myLines.length; i++) {
        if (myLines[i].characters.length === myLongestLine) {
            myLongestLineGroup += "Line - " + i + "\u000D";
        else if (myLines[i].characters.length > myLongestLine) {
            myLongestLine = myLines[i].characters.length;
            myLongestLineGroup = "Line - " + i + "\u000D";
    $.write("The longest lines are: \u000D" + myLongestLineGroup + "With " + myLongestLine + " characters including white spaces and breaks.\u000D");
    If you were after the physical space of a line then another couple of steps would be required. This can be problematic thought especially if the text is not forced to a fixed word, letter and glyph scaling as these paragraph style values can dramatically change the outcome (the default paragraph style has a 80% minimum word spacing by the way so it might cause variations in the result).

  • Some text in PDF fails to print -- document originally created with InDesign

    Hello. Thanks in advance for your help.
    I joined Creative Cloud a few days ago, and dowloaded several CS6 programs -- InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat XI Pro. My operating system is Windows 7.
    I created a simple order form using InDesign, and it prints perfectly directly from the InDesign platform. After creating a PDF by selecting Adobe PDF as the printer, the resulting PDF looks perfect on screen when viewed in Acrobat XI Pro. However, when printing from Acrobat to a paper-and-ink printer, chunks of the text go missing. Two other people who were emailed the PDF of this document have experienced the same problem, with the same chunks of text failing to print.
    Since it prints perfectly from InDesign, I am guessing the problem lies somewhere on the Acrobat side of the equation. Since the same problem has occured with several different printers, I am assuming it's not a problem with my particular printer.
    I have already tried unchecking the "Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts" option in the Adobe PDF printing preferences, and that did not fix it. I didn't expect that was the problem, since the rest of the type prints perfectly.
    I would like to attach two PDFs and/or the original InDesign document, but I cannot find an attachment option on the interface for this discussion page. I would be happy to email them to anyone who would like to take a look at them.
    As usual, I am working on a deadline and would very much appreciate any help you can give me.
    Thank you!

    YES! A SOLUTION!
    Thanks to an Adobe user who goes by "Test Screen Name" for this solution!
    DO NOT print to PDF from InDesign to create a PDF. Instead, use the Export function.
    I followed that advice, and it solved the problem. Hope this helps you, JuleeBruce!

  • How to map the elements in Indesign document with the PDF elements

    I wanted to know any way of mapping elements in the InDesign document with the elements in the exported PDF document from the same InDesign document.
    E.g If I have an Image X in InDesign document, Can I point out the same element in exported PDF using some mapping?
    Thanks in advance
    -Sandeep

    What is meant by me is, if there is a Text element in InDesign document, I should able to point out the respective PDF object.
    I am looking for some way to mark a specific InDesign element and once we export the document to PDF, I want to point out to the same element in some way so that I can process it.
    Requirement is simple, one user will mark some elements in the InDesign document and export it to PDF and send it to the other user. Other user will parse the PDF and extract the same element back or process it and use it.

  • How can I prevent this formating problem (changing fonts, lines etc) when converting PDF to a word document.

    I have a big problem when I convert my PDF to a word document, it is a mess. Is there a way to prevent this from happening. Font changes, table and lines formatting of lots of things. I am having to spend time editing and finding all the mistake, deleted the purpose of converting if I have to retype everything.

    Hi Donna,
    Are you facing this problem with a specific pdf or with all other pdf files? Which application was originally used to create that pdf file?
    Can you send that pdf file to me at [email protected] so that i can look into this issue for you.

  • Place multiple PDF files (or a folder of PDF files) into one InDesign document

    Hi,
    I know there are several scripts to place multipage Pdf's in InDesign.
    Based on those scripts I made one myself which places a PDF file with multiple pages as an InLine graphic where the name of the PDF file is inserted as a heading.
    Works great. But when I want to import 20 PDF files I have to run that script 20 times which isn't handy.
    So I'm looking for a way to choose a folder in which are several PDF-files that will be placed inside 1 ID doc.
    Any suggestions?

    Use .selectDlg():
    function getPDFs(){
        var f = someFolder.selectDlg ('Select a folder')
        if (f != null){
            return f.getFiles('*.pdf');
        return [];

  • I need to turn an indesign document into an editable pdf. how do I do that?

    I need to turn an indesign document into an editable pdf, how do I do that?

    InCopy is a solution, but it's not the only viable solution.
    I update many books, from 200 pages to 3,200 pages every year, long document, very techincal tax books.
    Some are done through InCopy, some are edited word files and rtfs exported from InDesign, some are marked up hard copies etc.
    It totally depends on the clients technical ability with computers. Last year I taught over 30 authors of ours how to use InCopy. Some were receptive, some were dubious, some were totally clueless.
    And on the dubious and totally clueless I spent more time troubleshooting their problems than I would normally with a Word/RTF option.
    Some people are capable of switching to InCopy or even know how to use it in the first place. For anyone never used InDesign or InCopy before then it's a massive learning curve to jump from MS Word et al word processors, to InCopy.
    I do agree, it is the best solution that's out there, technically. But that solution is not usable by a lot of people.
    Yeh if the client is comfortable with InCopy then it's the way forward.
    But in most cases, in my experience, it's faster and more efficient to Export the text as RTF and let the author update the RTF. That leaves you in control of reinserting the text and formatting it correctly. Rather than letting the client add bold, underline, italics, superscript, subscripts, crazy workarounds because they didn't know how to do it properly. And in the end you end up with 2 or 3 times the amount of work than is necessary, just cleaning up what the client has done in InCopy that does not suit the overall formatting of the publications.
