Re-connecting titles to thumbnails

In the near past, when I changed the title of a thumbnail, the title on the page also changed. Somehow I've broken the link. How can I reestablish the link, please?
Thanks

Actually, I tried it on the delinquent chapter title and it didn't work. Then I copied a chapter title that did work, pasted it into the offending title page (where it immediately took on the title of that page, rather than what I'd copied). I deleted the title that wasn't cooperative and this one now works.
I think I had deleted the generic title text box that loads with "chapters" and substituted a normal text box, which wasn't linked.
Anyway, it works. Thanks.

  • IBooks shows wrong titles in thumbnail view

Using iBooks' store, I've purchased a number of free ebooks.  The texts are from Project Gutenberg, but they are being supplied by Apple.  When I look at the titles in list veiw, all the titles are correct.
The problem I'm having is when I view them as thumbnails (with the bookshelf in the background).  Some of the titles are duplicated even though they are different books.  On others, when I open them and then close them the book with title icon dissapears and is replaced with a generic blue icon (square screen with three buttons under it) and no title.
Any ideas as to what's going on and how to fix it?
I'm on a new iPad 2 running the current iOS and am syncing with a Mac Pro running the current version of Snow Leapard.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Applecare came to the rescue!  They had me backup and then restore my iPad which fixed the problem.

  • When I create an album and then try to watch it in slideshow, I get only a black screen with a white title.  No photos come up.  Also when I click on an individual photo in the album, I get a white exclamation point on a black background but no big photo.

When I create an album of photos and then open the album and try to watch it by selecting "slideshow" I get only a black screen.  The white title comes up briefly but then no photos, only a black screen.  Also when I go back to the album and click on a thumbnail, up comes a big white exclamation point on a black background instead of the enlarged photo.  Any idea what's going on?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Unable to add title between clips that requires download.

I am using Adobe Premiere Elements 12 and have been unsuccessful in adding titles between clips that are downloaded content.
    Need help ASAP!!

Thanks for the reply. I just need to have clarified a few more details.
It sounds like that you are trying to add the "Yearbook_hd_title" under Titles & Text Tab/HD Templates/Yearbook_hd_title.
This Title Template needs to have content download to get the title template to work. To do that, you right click the blue ban at the top right corner of the title template thumbnail and select Download Now and then wait. The process can be long. Is you Internet connection working and working well?
You say that you also have problems downloading content other than that under Titles & Templates. You mention Instant Movie choices as well.
Content download will depend on the Internet connection as well as the Adobe Server.

  • All my pictures have disappeared all that i see is gray screen with dashed boarders but picture titles are there

I am running on Lion and iphoto. My 13000 pictures seem to have disappeared except for a dashed boarder where each picture should be and the title of the photo. I use timemachine for backup but when I try to restore I get an error message saying I don't have privileges for iphoto. What should I do?

  • I cannot see my photos in iphoto when I open it...it just shows the albums/titles but only an exclamation mark when I click on the picture.  How can I fix this please?

I have downloaded some photos and all I see now is a black sqaure with an exclamation mark in it. If I double click and make them full screen I can see them, but not as thumbnails. Please help :-( In the EVENTS, they are just black sqaures.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I uploaded pictures from my camera then allowed iphoto to delete them from my camera. However, when I went to edit the pictures the thumbnails were viewable but when I clicked on the photos there was a triangle with an exclamation mark inside. Help!

I also tried to upload the pictures onto my blog...but I couldn't click on the files as it seems they aren't there even though I can see the picture. The font of the file/picture name is grey instead of black indicating I am not allowed to click on it to open.

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • I've been using Iphoto as a primary download program for years. As of today, when I click a thumbnail to open the photo, I get a black screen with an exclamation mark on some shots. Also, these shots can't be dragged into Adobe Bridge. Would love help!

I use Iphoto as my primary download tool, then drag images into Adobe Bridge. Just today, when I tried to open a photo by clicking a thumbnail, all I got was an image of an exclamation mark and I couldn't drag the shot either. These are images I've successfully opened and dragged before. I would love guidance from anyone who knows a fix for this. Thanks!  John

    What version of iPhoto?
As Larry says, your workflow doesn't make a whole lot of sense. If you're using iPhoto only for downloading then you're best off using Image Capture (in your Applications Folder) and just keep the whole database element out if it. If you're using iPhoto also to organise, then what are you using Bridge for? Anything you do in Bridge - or Photoshop - is unavailable in iPhoto if you work this way.

  • Cannot see thumbnails or open pictures (even though info is listed)

Recently converted to iMac from PC. Generally very happy with Mac. Last pm, was burning CD's of photos. One month/event (2007-09) had more photos than could fit on one CD (even though only 640 MD listed in folder when burning a CD more MB's seem to be "created" and it was over 700 MB). Used iPhoto command to split event/month in two so could burn two separate CD's. Changed the name of each folder (i.e. 2007-09 a and b) then burned the CD's. Then used iPhoto command to merge folders back to one and changed name back to original name: 2007-09). Everything seemed fine until this AM when we opened iPhoto. The 2007-09 folder listed that it had all 272 pictures and 604MB's under information but no pictures could be seen on the event folder or when looking under photos. Each picture listed all the correct info but no image can be seen and when picture is opened it just showed a grey circle with "!"
I was able to restore the photos from the last saved group from last pm using browse backups/time machine. However, I assume that somehow the actual picture files or pathway was corrupted from the steps I used last pm when trying to set things up to burn a CD. In many years of Windows PC picture and PICASA program use, something like this never happened. While the ability to restore using Time Machine was great and cool, it is very concerning that our original pictures could so easily be "lost" and I assume this represents some flaw in the iPhoto program.
Did I do something wrong or is there a flaw in iPhoto that easily leads to file corruption? How do I prevent this from happening again?

So how (and where) did you do this?

The pics should be safe and sound in the iPhoto Package File.

  • Why no pic, just a thumbnail?

After transferring my files from my old Mac to my iBook last year I found that SOME of the pics on the new Mac showed up only as thumbnails(iPhoto six). When placing the cursor on the individual thumbnails shown up top, I get only a question Mark . . .?
Is there any way I can fix this?

The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
The most common cause of this is User Activity in the iPhoto Library Folder in the Finder.
Have you altered, moved or renamed anything in the iPhoto Library Folder?
If you haven't, then try rebuilding the database. Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose the top three options.
Ig that fails, it might also be a file permissions issue: Download BatchMod from

And apply it to the iPhoto Library Folder using the settings found here:

  • Portrait oriented thumbnail becomes Black Exclamation error when clicked on

After loading in pix from my new Canon G9 (12 megapixel), I can click on landscape oriented photos (from their thumbnails) and they come to full screen display as expected, however all the portrait oriented thumbnails flash up to full screen and then immediately are replaced by a weird big black exclamation mark in a white circle (this is all very blurry and the size of the full screen picture that should have been shown)... it is clearly some sort of error message indicator. I had no such problem with my Canon a710 (8 mpix).
Note, if I go to full screen viewing mode (by clicking the expander button at the bottom left of the screen) these pictures are displayed properly when I tab through my shots.
I searched iphoto help for "exclamation" and there is a discussion of a little exclamation error format (tiny compared to what I get displayed) and it signals problems locating the photo, but that is not the problem I have (it is findable, even displays briefly before being replaced by the BIG BLURRY EXCLAMATION IN A TELESCOPE TYPE VIEWFINDER image.
Any idea if this is a known bug and how do you report such a bug to Apple online?
