Re-create a mirrored RAID after restoring backup
As a follow-up on my thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=833779&tstart=0 :
On a XServe G5 with OS X Server 10.4.8 and a two-drive mirrored RAID I do backups by cloning the RAID onto an other disk (in bay three) using Intego's Personal Backup X4.
Now it may happen that there is some kind of data loss or an other emergency case that urges me to boot from the cloned HD. I would do this by simply removing the HD in bay one and replacing it with the clone, then restart the server (second HD of the RAID1 remains in bay two).
The information I got until yet says that the mirrored RAID is then broken and needs to be completely re-build. Is this correct so far ? I originally assumed that the clone "remembers" that it was part of a RAID system before and rebuilds automatically with the second HD still in place. Very likely wrong ?
So if I need to rebuild the clone from scratch, which steps do I follow exactly ? As far as I understand I have two choices:
(1)
Via command line (as root): diskutil createRAID mirror <set name> Journaled HFS+ <device identifier disk1> <device identifier disk2>
<set name>: Would be volume name of the RAID to create, right ?
<device identifier disk1/2>: What is this and how to determine ?
(2)
Via disk utility: Select one disk (first line on the left disk/volume list, e.g. "76,2 GB Hitachi 123ABC"), click in "RAID" tab, do settings.
Then drag & drop each harddisk from the left to the right list (again, the first line of each disk entry). Finally creating the RAID by clicking at the button "Generate".
I'm not sure, although I would likely handle this with the disk utility, it appears easier to me using the diskutil command in terminal. But maybe I simply lack of explaining the GUI... let me know how to post images and I will add some screenshots here.
Well, if my proceedings are too complex and there is something easier, please let me know. I'm open for everything.
>This part of my question originally referred to the fact that when booting from the cloned backup in bay one while still having the second disk of the old RAID in bay two, it could occur that the OS rebuilds the RAID by using the data on the remaining mirror disk in bay two, couldn't ? This would be not desired, because the data on that disk would be no longer usable. So just for clarification, not that we have a misunderstanding in this point.
I see what you're getting at, and I don't believe it's an issue.
Given three disks, disk0, disk1 and disk2, where disk0 and disk1 are mirrored and that mirror fails, the OS will not rebuild the mirror using disk1 and any other disk. It won't arbitrarily choose any disk in the system to rebuild on - you have to specifically mark as disk as usable, either by enabling auto-rebuild and adding a spare disk to the array, or by using 'repairMirror' and specifying the disk to use.
In any case, if you reboot the system from disk2, there is no way it will rebuild the array using that disk since that disk is the active boot drive and can not be unmounted (which is necessary before being added to an array).
So, no, there is no chance that the system will auto-rebuild the working half of the mirror with your backup disk.
>Okay, let's summarize... I would follow this procedure in order to boot from the cloned backup and build a new RAID:
1. Remove both disks from the XServe.
2. Insert the cloned backup disk and boot.
3. Open terminal, su root, execute:
diskutil enableRAID disk0
diskutil repairMirror disk0 disk1
This is not correct.
When you 'enableRAID disk0' the OS will create a new, virtual disk (likely 'disk2'). This is the mirror array (currently consisting of only one drive), and it is this virtual disk that you need to specify as the mirror to be repaired.
So, given disk0 and disk1 as being the physical disks in the server, the steps are more likely to be:
<pre class=command>diskutil enableRAID disk0</pre>
(this creates a new, virtual disk2)
<pre class=command>diskutil repairMirror disk2 disk1</pre>
(this adds physical disk1 to the degraded mirror disk2)
When complete disk2 will be a mirror RAID consisting of disk0 and disk1.
>When using "diskutil enableRAID", I cannot determine the label of the RAID as I would do with "diskutil createRAID" (in command line manual this is referred to "setname"). Which setname does my "new" RAID system get, a default one ?
You know, I have no idea
I've never noticed this before. If I think about it, I'd guess that the setname is based on the source disk name.
>> If you add a drive to a RAID it gets reformatted, so it doesn't matter what's
on it.
Even if it was part of the RAID system before (the original disk in bay two) ? It could still have the RAID information on it and try to rebuild RAID when getting mounted, couldn't ?
No. See my comments above. The OS won't auto-rebuild unless a) the RAID is set to auto-rebuild and b) there is a spare disk in the array. If either of those two conditions are not true then the disk acts as a degraded mirror and can be reformatted/reallocated as you like.

Creating a mirrored raid set with a hard drive that already has data on it.
I have a hard drive that I keep my photos on, and want to create a mirrored raid set that includes this drive, with its data, and another drive. How can I do this without erasing the drive with my photos on them? I am running 10.7.5 if that matters.
Thanks for any help.Creating a Mirrored RAID reformats the drive and loads a substantial RAID driver and some tables onto it. When completed, the drive is inherently a member of a RAID set, and will continue to be so even if moved to another Mac.
because of this, you cannot create a RAID directly on a standard drive that contains data already in any reasonable, risk-free way.
To amplify what The Hatter has said above, Mirrored RAID is not Backup. Mirrored RAID only increases mean time to repair to keep a drive failure from becoming a Data Disaster. You still need a Backup. Mirrored RAID does not protect you from deletions from user error, crazy software, or "just because".
I run a mirrored RAID in my Home Server, which contains all the Users files for everyone in the Household. And I also recognize (after being burned by it) that Mirrored RAID is helpful, but not a sufficient Backup by itself. I back up the Users Drive automatically to an External drive using Time Machine. [So what I am advising is not just theoretical, I am living what I am advising.]
With WD Black 1TB and other very good drives in the under US$100 range, there is really no reason NOT to invest in several drives for such an undertaking. -
after restoring backup on new macbook with time machine Firefox will n to start. It says it is missing profile although profile exists and profile manager will not start. Also reinstalling does not help. Direct after starting Firefox it says profile is missing and then quits Firefox. Please help edit
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
* https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.
See:

After Restoring/Backup of File System XI Java Instances are not up!
Hello all,
We are facing problem in restoring the SAP XI System, after taking backup of the system the <b>java instances</b> in SAP XI System are not starting again. ABAP connections are fine.
Can anyone provide suggestions/solutions in order to restore the XI System back.
The system information is as follows.
System Component: SAP NetWeaver 2004s, <b>PI 7.0</b>
Operating System: SunOS 5.9, SunOS 5.10
Database: ORACLE 9.2.0.
Regards,
Ketan PatelIf it´s REALLY a PI 7.0 (SAP_BASIS 700 and WebAS Java 7.00) then it´s not compatible. WebAS 7.00 needs Oracle 10g (http://service.sap.com/pam)
Also see
http://service.sap.com/nw2004s
--> Availibility
--> SAP NetWeaver 7.0 (2004s) PAM
If you open the Powerpoint, you will see that Oracle 9 is not listed. I wonder, how you got that installed.
Neverless, if you recover a Java instance, both filesystem and database content (of the Java schema) must be in sync, means, you need to restore both, database (schema) and filesystem, that have been backed up at the same time.
Check Java Backup and Restore :
Restoring the System
1. Shut down the system.
2. Install a new AS Java system using SAPInst, or restore the file system from the offline backups that you created.
3. Import the database backup using the relevant tools provided by the database vendor.
4. Overwrite the SAP system directory /usr/sap/.
5. Start the system (see Starting and Stopping SAP NetWeaver ABAP and Java.)
The J2EE Engine is restored with the last backup.

I would also like to reframe my problem.
XI server(both abap and Web) was working fine. Every weekend we take full backup(file system+DB)(UFS) of server. After taking backup server got up and we were able to login through abap but java web page was not openning. We did some troubleshooting it didn't work and finaly we restored the backup and somehow it worked. Next week after backup again same problem arose. We again restored latest backup but this time problem still exists.

Lost all Messages after restoring backup on x2-01
i have a nokia x2-01 and i have backed up all my messages to a memory card... then i restored that backup.. and after restore there are no messages in my messages folder.... is there any way to restore all my messages??
The problem is probably that the mailbox has lost the .mbox suffix in the filesystem.
Report the names of the files and folders present at the first level of the ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/ account folder in the Finder.
In order to post the exact file names and avoid typing mistakes, proceed as follows. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/. With that folder open, if you’re looking at it in View > as List mode, first collapse any expanded folders so that the Finder only shows the files and folders at the first level. Now, do Edit > Select All (⌘A), then Edit > Copy (⌘C), and paste it in your reply to this post.
You’ll probably see an INBOX folder without the .mbox suffix there. If that’s the case, quit Mail and rename the folder to INBOX.mbox.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library. -
Unable to rebuild in mirrored RAID after hard drive failure
I plan on getting a mirrored raid setup for my backups of all my work that I have done. I am currently testing out how the built in software RAID works in OSX.
I have setup a mirrored RAID with two flash drives and it works fine, i then tried to simulate if one of the disks were to fail by reformatting it, and then i tried to plug it back in to rebuild it, but it does not allow me to do so the rebuild button is greyed out. Could it be because i had the RAID setup as automatically rebuild? If someone could walk me through the process of rebuilding the raid setup that would be great, i would like to figure this out before purchasing the harddrives.Awesome, this just saved my sanity, thank you!
I was about to go totally insane when I couldn't find the option to add a new drive to the existing RAID mirror and then rebuild the whole thing.
In the Apple help, it just says "go to RAID" "click rebuild" - but this is absolutely not how it works!
Adding the new, empty drive by drag and drop wasn't mentioned anywhere - in addition to that I have never seen a program that has certain functions which can only be accessed by drag and drop.
Also the hard disk utility doesn't look like drag and drop GUI at all.
It was really easy as soon as I read this thread, so thanks again, this totally saved my day! -
IPhone 6 photo and video retrieval after restoring backup from my old iPhone 5 unit
Hi,
I was so excited to use my new iPhone 6 and started taking photos and videos with it. Not to mention that the photos and videos were of my all-time favorite artist during his much-awaited concert . When I got home, I forgot to download all the media files first to my desktop before performing "restore backup" via iTunes so all my old iPhone 5 settings could be duplicated in my new iPhone. Now, I can only access the photos/videos taken from my iPhone 5 in my iPhone 6. Not sure if I could still retrieve the new photos/videos taken recently using my iPhone 6 when they seem to have been overwritten by my old iPhone files. Please help.
Thanks!Correction: the message that iTunes hangs at for hours on end was "Waiting for changes to be applied".

Missing rolls after restoring backup
I recently restored from a backup, my entire Photo folder. When I launched iPhoto, only photos up to a certain date (4/20/07) we displayed, and nothing after. I looked in the directories, and the pictures are there in their Roll folders, both in "Original" and "Modified". I would like to get these back into iPhoto without too much fuss, without duplicates, and maintaining any editing that was done to modify them.
Copying the file made no difference. The same rolls were not visible in iPhoto.
Then your back up was corrupted. It's important not just to make back ups, but to test them too.
My plan was to re-import the rolls from April 2007 onward and then rebuild the library, which I assume will create a fresh library file.
You'll be re-importing to a damaged file whose stability cannot be guaranteed. Rebuilding the library (by holding down the apple and option keys?) does not create a new library file.
Your secondary suggestion above led me to believe that I would create a fresh library and re-import EVERY photo, losing any metadata, adjustments, etc. that I have made to the first 8000 photos.
That is correct. That's why I say
Note this will give you a working library with the same film rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, books, calendars etc.
What might be worth trying is to create a new library and use iPhoto Library Manager to move rolls, albums and their associated metadata to the new library. It's the only way of doing it while preserving metadata. I'm not sure it will work on the damaged library, but you can download a free trial from the link above and see.

"Safari quit unexpectedly" after restoring backup from Time Machine
I updated to the new Yosemite this morning, only to find that after, I couldn't get online, couldn't get emails, nothing. After searching online found out that a lot of people had the same problems, so I restored an old update through Time Machine. Everything's back to normal now and working again, except Safari. Everytime I try to open it, I get an error message and it shuts down immediately. Any idea what's causing the problem or how I can fix it? Here's the error:

0x117f57ff7 com.apple.print.framework.Print (8.0 - 258)You may have installed the "Genieo" or "InstallMac" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the linked support article, you may also need to remove this file in the same way:
~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.ltvbit.plist
If there are other items with a name that includes "Genieo" or "genieo" alongside any of those you find, remove them as well.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates
if it's not already checked. -
I cant find my photos after restoring backup
I deleted my contacts by mistake to I restored the backup on my computer but then I found out that the photos where lost after the restoring so what should I do now to get them back ?!!
Because Photos, like iPhoto and Aperture before it, replaces the Finder for anything to do with your pictures.
Use the Media Browser for uploading. You can access it from whatever website you're using: -
I lost all apps after restored backup, what do I have to do with that?
After taken a refurbished iPhone from assistance I tried multiple times to restore it from iPhone iCloud backup but after started, inserted all the password, skipped a password request from an unknown account [email protected] (???) system told me that was unable to reinstall some apps and I would need to sync with iTunes..
Going on the restore stucks on photo download and all the folders with the apps disappeared one by one, so I no longer have apps on my iPhone, furthermore I needed to reboot the device to restart the photo download, that now is still on going.
Anyone can help ?

Cant instal maps after restoring backup
I have been installing firmware 32.x on X6 16 gb then i restored a backup i made using ovi suite . After that ovi suite showed me that there were necessary updates about ten updates . All of the updates were installed except an updated version for maps application . I tried it using the Software Update app in the device and it showed me : update failed . How can i use the updated version which was there before the flashing . Sorry for my poor english .
@meedodaifallah
If OVI Maps did not update you should be able to use version pre-installed in device firmware, although this may need to use earlier map data. You might need to delete E:\Cities + .qf file if present, re-launch OVI Maps application to re-initialise application and re-define necessary folder structure to re-download your regional maps using OVI Suite > Maps.
OVI Maps v3.04 & v3.06 use different map data sets, with the latter having extra details such as transportation layers.
From past experience sometimes you can need to reset device to "Out of box" state after firmware upgrade by keying in *#7370# followed by 12345 (default Nokia lock code unless altered by yourself) provided essential data backed up and then upgrade OVI Maps to latest v3.06 before restoring anything to device.

Why are "contact shadow" builds so slow?
I like to use a "contact shadow" for some of my builds. Usually I have a single picture that has that shadow type applied and no other text/items or very few of them in the remainder of the slide. Problem is that the slide takes at least a second or
