Re: GTX 970 Fan ramps up while in idle

The "prefer max performance" is a waste of energy anayway. Skype uses the gpu (e.g. for the video chat option) so if the gpu is forced to not use energy saving anything demanding gpu performance will clock it at full speed. That is your decision...

It seems that the problem does not occur in "safe mode"
However the problem also doesn't occur when i use my password, rather what i usually log in with a pin. When logging in with my password it is like windows isn't completely started up. most files...

  • Msi gtx 970 Fans Randomly Turning On When Idling???

So basically I have had my msi gtx 970 for a couple weeks and the fans seem to behave as normal? Now once when I was idling I noticed the fans spin up and immediately spin down straight away. So basically now every 30 seconds the fans will spin up and spin straight back down which is weird. The temps are fine and I have checked this using MSi Afterburner. The fans I'm pretty sure are meant to stay off under 65 which it is so why are the fans spinning up. I don't seem to notice it noise wise but I don't know what it is happening. When I check the Fan % in Msi After Burner it doesn't log the fan ramping up but the 'fan tachometer, RPM' section shows it going up and back down, I will link a picture of this. I will link you the youtube video which I highly reccomend watching for a better idea of what's happening. I show you it spin up once and back down then a waiting period and then it doing it again.

I may have found a problem with MSI's fan settings on these cards.
Is this the problem? I don't know. But it does not seem to be set correctly IMO.
As you can see below the fans with the OEM bios are never actually set to 0 rpm. When they are off they are actually being told to spin at 1% power at 23 rpm.
    I have changed mine.
The fans no longer randomly spin with the new drivers. And I have not had any more problems with one fan not spinning up ( although its too early to declare victory on that problem ).
My fans now start up at 50c and even when overclocked to 1503MHZ I have not gone over 65c at 68% fan speed.
Went ahead and copied your settings and everything seems to be working as it should  now. Thanks
    **EDIT**
Just tested it by getting gpu up to 50c and it seems to work. After it drops below 50 it takes a bit for the red fan to spin back down (stayed around 44% for a good 3-5 mins). After the red fan dropped to 0% the black fan slowly dropped down to 29% and that's where it is sitting right now. I think this is per design though since I remember my gpu doing this even on .16. The cooldown process or something I guess.
And at the end of this post black fan is back down to 0%. Good call on the problem looks like it's fixed .

  • GTX 970 Fan Issue

    Hi,
I have been looking around at the forum for some time now, to see if anyone else had the same issue as me.
My problem: When my GTX 970 Gaming 4G gets 59 degrees the fan turns on and goes to 100%. But the fanes never turns down again before a reboot. GPU-Z and MSI afterburner says that the fans are on 0%, but I can hear and see them insite my pc and they are at the max fan speed possible.
What I have tried so far: I tried to re-install my PC --> Test the card in another pc --> Tried with an older Nvidia driver --> Updated the VBios
    S/N 602-v316-09sb1411001399

    Hi,
You have to RMA the card... hardware issue, not software.

  • GTX 970 fan problems

I've been dealing with this for months but it's been really bad recently so I thought I'd ask for help.  My GTX 970 Gaming 4G will fairly often fail to start the rear fan when it heats up, causing the front fan to run at 100% which is very loud.  I have to reboot or open up my case and spin-start the rear fan to get it to function normally again.  I have previously updated my vbios to version 182 because I thought it fixed this problem, but it definitely hasn't.  Is there any fix available or am I looking at an RMA?

Good luck getting it RMA'd mate. MSI are the worst, they won't take it direct and only through incapable vendors who can't understand it's an intermittent problem and therefore can't replicate it and won't RMA it back to MSI.
To think this problem is still rearing it's ugly head.
Do yourself a favour and try for a refund and then go for a reliable manufacturer like ASUS or others.

  • GTX 970 Fan Issue Part Two

    Hello,
i am new to the forum but i followed the first threat every day since my MSI 970 GTX Card has the issue with the fans (one is at 100% and one does not move)
I found that the threat is closed, i think that this is a shame.  I want to quote:
    "Nichrome"
    Enough of flaming on MSI
    >>Please read and comply with the Forum Rules.<<
If you have an issue mentioned in this topic with your 970 or 980, RMA it. (My word, RMA is a simple way, who pays me as i cannot use the pc in this time ??)
If you can't understand that MSI is unable (or was) to reproduce the issue, then we can't do anything about it. Also note that MSI has lots of different things to do, not just fixing 970 fan issue.
Any updates will be posted by Mods/Admins here.----End of quote."
WOW !!!!  MSI has a lot different things to do ?
And what, please ? The GTX970 is as new as a card could be. And MSI has different things to do as fixing errors ? WHAT ????????????? WHAT HAS MSI TO DO ???
I think you must be kidding. I am sorry that my first post is full of angry but if MSI has other things to do as fixing an error from a brand new product, what for the heck are these things ???? (fixing errors on a Geforce 8800 or else, oh yeah, that is really important !!)
I have contact with my reseller and i will get ( i hope still 2014 ) a new card, hopefully without errors.
But the statemant of MSI is, simple to say, not enough.

    Very upsetting?
Explain me one thing: how can you fix something if it's not broken? If they can't get the issue, then they can't investigate. Please stop behaving like you're 5 years old that don't understand a thing. Unless you are 5 years old, then it seems that your parents should speak to us or MSI instead of you.
That's not nice is it.  Yes he might be being a little melodramatic.  But to then insult him by calling him a child?  You should not be insulting people.  Whether this is a user to user forum or not, the forum uses the MSI brand which should encourage even more so a kinder approach to customers using the forum.  In my humble opinion of course.
Customers are unhappy.  It would be wise to note that the reaction of MSI, this forum, the fan troubles are all being widely discussed and documented all over the web.  MSI's reputation is not always being viewed in a good light.  Surely we should be trying to mindful and where possible improve that.
Also, the view that in some shape or form its the customers fault for buying hardware early isn't one I share, nor should it imo be viewed as acceptable.  I have always bought early release gpu's and never had any issue in the past 20 years from a hardware perspective.  I will freely admit that these 2 x 980's of mine are my very first purchases of MSI though.
I actually quite like my MSI 980's, though it is looking likely that they may require a vbios update to rectify the fan spin up issue being currently investigated by Nvidia.  It would have been nice to know that this was being investigated by MSI too.  Is that enough to put me off MSI again?  Not really.  But my perception of MSI has changed and think things could be handled better.
TL;DR  MSI could do better at maintaining customer relations.

  • No display and fans ramp up while trying to wake from sleep.

For the past week every time I go to wake my computer from sleep, nothing happens at first, and then my computer fans ramp up and I have to hold the power button to stop it. I have already tried resetting my SMU, but that didn't seem to do anything. I also tried reseting my pram. I'm guessing it's probably that my logic board is going, but I was wondering if anyone has heard of this before and had any fixes. Thanks.

  • GTX 970 4G Gaming not underclocking in idle

So, I suddenly got this little issue after trying to to play few f2p mmos, which totally made my computer go crazy when launched, few days ago.
Basically, the gpu won't go under 899Mhz, down to 135Mhz, anymore.
Of course have rebooted, tried reinstalling MSI Gaming App and the NVidia drivers.
Is there some power-saving options somewhere which may have gotten resetted, and which affect the underclocking?

Quote from: TZBC on 05-March-15, 07:55:31
What f2p mmos games you tried to play?
Check if any files related to the f2p mmos remains in your system and delete it.
Try clear CMOS and reseat your GTX 970 4G Gaming.
Gonna try to take out and reseat the card. Probably won't try the CMOS clearing. I don't really like to do it except in total necessity.
And this isn't one. The card still stays cool enough after all (under 60celsius).
Also, cleaned the directories and registry keys so those games shouldn't have anything left anymore.

    Do you have multiple monitors?
I do have multiple monitors (2 + tv) but that hasn't mattered before. It was only after the games caused the whole system become unstable. (really old games, from 2006-2008).
They are called ASDA Story 2 and Drift City.
Especially the ASDA 2 was horrible. It made the whole Windows freeze from time to time.
Which, I guess may have been caused by the anti-hack they have: nProtect's GameGuard. It most likely completely blocked several system programs. Including the NVidia driver.
The anti-hack program is gone, but I guess after effects still apply until the card is taken out/system is reinstalled.

  • MOVED: MSI GTX 970 GAMING 4G - Fans not spinning

This topic has been moved to GAMING Graphics Cards.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=251859.0

First of all don't hijack other topics next time please. The one you posted in was not related to your question about the fan issue but the normal fans off feature below 60°C. Your thread has been split off.
The issue is fixed in later batches and everyone with a card affected by the issue with one fan not starting at all had been adviced to rma the card as there is no fix for existing cards. The Fans Randomly Turning On issue has been fixed with a vbios update.
The thread you meant by the way has been continued in another topic.

  • MSI GTX 970 GAMING 4G - Fans not spinning question

    Hi there.
I've read several post in this forum about fan issues with the 970 & 980 platform, as well as complaints regarding coil whine in a handful of hardware blogs.
As this threadhttps://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=183618.msg1317790#msg1317790 was closed at the beginning of November and hasn’t seen an update or further clarification, I wanted to ask what the status of MSI's investigation on the discussed problems is. Are they solved in the newer batches (and if so, how could I spot a new revision of these cards), or are fan & coil whine problems still present to this day?
I already ordered a GTX 970 4G, but became so unsure of my decision through these issues not being declared as officially solved, that I ultimately cancelled it.
Looking forward hearing back from you.
    Best,
    T

  • MSI GTX 970 Gaming - monitoring both fans

Is there a way to monitor the RPM of both fans on then GTX 970 Gaming card.
MSI Afterburner monitors only one fan
... this would also help to determine when the 2nd fan is spinning while the 1st fan
has stopped and Aferburner is reporting 0 RPM.

Neither HWinfo nor Speedfan show GPU fan speed at all ...OpenHardwareMonitor at lease shows the fan speed %
but only for one fan, Afterburner provides both the fan RPM and the % speed, but only for one fan.
Too bad both fans could not be monitored ...would be pretty useful.

  • GTX 970 Gaming 4G fan issue - bios edit or Afterburner profile?

There's a rather specific issue at hand with my second GTX 970 at the moment -> after a short repaste, the GPU now is too "cold" in relation to the VRMs.
Before, the VRMs used to be ~80°C under heavy load (measured at the backside of the card). Now, the card will turn itself off after hitting ~115° VRM temperature.
Is there anything simple, that lets me keep the board's fan regulation, that would make the fans spin faster at a given temperature? The "temperature limit" in Afterburner for example doesn't work.

    Quote from: Radical_53 on 02-March-15, 23:45:42
Ok, the first part of my solution works well so far Found a "custom" flash tool that allowed me to flash my edited bios onto the card.
The whole thing I changed was to decrease all the temperature "goals" for the fan by 10°C, eg. the card will now stay in passive mode up to 50°C, not 60°C.
The biggest change was the percentage the fan has under load, which was my goal exactly: From 45% under load I went to 75%, all done by the card itself, without my fancy AB curve. Quite an improvement and some added security for me.
Can i ask for more details and your modded bios? Seems like a good idea.
Also write your S/N so ill know if i can even flash your bios
    Thanks

  • GTX 970 Gaming 4G can't overclock above 1398MHz

Hi, I was trying to use MSI Afterburner to overclock the GTX 970 GAMING 4G to around 1411MHz (+120 above 1291MHz) but the card seems to downclock to 1398MHz all the time. I've checked if this is due to insufficient voltage but power maxes out at 90% while the voltage hits 1.2v at 1401MHz for a short while before falling to 1.18v at 1398MHz. I've increased the Temp. Limit to 87 degrees (linked to a power limit of 107%) but it seems like the card won't go above 80 degrees. Please help.

OC is a plastic lottery. I just got MSI Gaming 780Ti and it handled +250 Core clock and +600Mem clock. Not sure if that is good or bad but in OCCT gpu stress test it gave me around 30fps more compared to stock clocks (gaming mode) yet the card was around 63 with fans at 40% (it is damn extremely cool!!).
Cool the card enough first so it doesnt go above 75. Else the OC might be successful but will throttle due to high temp
