Re: Help me with THREADS !

Look at the Thread class in the help docs. It's pretty easy to follow and gives 2 different ways to start threads. As for managing them, you could add observers to your thread object or event listeners (see Observer/Observable & Event/Key Event in documentation).

You write a new Class, lets say CopyThread.java which extends Thread. This class have to implement the run method
public void run() {}Within this run method you start a endless loop (that tests a flag if it should run again)
while(doRun)  {
try {
Thread.sleep(1000 * 60 * 10); // 10 minutes of inactivity
// list error files
File[] files = errorDir.listFiles();
// try to copy all files
for(File f : files)
// copy
catch(InterruptedException ie) {
doRun = false;
}This loop will try to copy all files in the errorDir every 10 minutes.
You can start this Thread when your App starts, it runs in the Background.
Start it like this:
CopyThread ct = new CopyThread();
ct.start();If you want to "stop" the Thread just set the flag to false ct.setDoRun(false).
This will stop it within the next 10 minutes, if you need to "stop" it immidiately call ct.interrupt(). This will cause an InterruptedException that is caught in the loop and the run method will be left, so the Thread stops. Dont call Thread.stop().

  • Need help with threads?.. please check my approach!!

    Hello frnds,
    I am trying to write a program.. who monitors my external tool.. please check my way of doing it.. as whenever i write programs having thread.. i end up goosy.. :(
    first let me tell.. what I want from program.. I have to start an external tool.. on separate thread.. (as it takes some time).. then it takes some arguments(3 arguments).. from file.. so i read the file.. and have to run tool.. continously.. until there are arguments left.. in file.. or.. user has stopped it by pressing STOP button..
    I have to put a marker in file too.. so that.. if program started again.. file is read from marker postion.. !!
    Hope I make clear.. what am trying to do!!
    My approach is like..
    1. Have two buttons.. START and STOP on Frame..
    START--> pressed
    2. check marker("$" sign.. placed in beginning of file during start).. on file..
         read File from marker.. got 3 arg.. pass it to tool.. and run it.. (on separate thread).. put marker.. (for next reading)
         Step 2.. continously..
    3. STOP--> pressed
         until last thread.. stops.. keep running the tool.. and when last thread stops.. stop reading any more arguments..
    Question is:
    1. Should i read file again and again.. ?.. or read it once after "$" sign.. store data in array.. and once stopped pressed.. read file again.. and put marker ("$" sign) at last read line..
    2. how should i know when my thread has stopped.. so I start tool again??.. am totally confused.. !!
    please modify my approach.. if u find anything odd..
    Thanks a lot in advance

    Hello,
    I have no experience with threads or with having more than run "program" in a single java file. All my java files have the same structure. This master.java looks something like this:
    ---master.java---------------------------------------------------
    import java.sql.*;
    import...
    public class Master {
    public static void main(String args []) throws SQLException, IOException {
    //create connection pool here
    while (true) { // start loop here (each loop takes about five minutes)
    // set values of variables
    // select a slave process to run (from a list of slave programs)
    execute selected slave program
    // check for loop exit value
    } // end while loop
    System.out.println("Program Complete");
    } catch (Exception e) {
    System.out.println("Error: " + e);
    } finally {
    if (rSet1 != null)
    try { rSet1.close(); } catch( SQLException ignore ) { /* ignored */ }
    connection.close();
    -------end master.java--------------------------------------------------------
    This master.java program will run continuously for days or weeks, each time through the loop starting another slave process which runs for five minutes to up to an hour, which means there may be ten to twenty of these slave processes running simultaneously.
    I believe threads is the best way to do this, but I don't know where to locate these slave programs: either inside the master.java program or separate slave.java files? I will need help with either method.
    Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • Need some help with threads...

    Hello all,
    I am working on a project at work, and I am not the best programmer in the world. I have been trying to get my head around this for a couple of days and just cannot get it to work.
    I am writing an instrumentation control program that will have three threads. One is the GUI, one will receive control information and set up the hardware, and one will check the hardware status and report it to the GUI periodically. I plan on using the invokeLater() method to communicate the status to the GUI and change the status display in the GUI. Communication from the GUI to the controller thread and from the status thread to the controller thread I had planned on being piped input/output stream as appropriate. I have a control class and a status class that need to be communicated over these piped streams. In some trial code I have been unable to wrap the piped input/output streams with object input/output streams. I really need some help with this. Here is the main thread code:
    package playingwiththreads1;
    import java.io.*;*
    *public class PlayingWithThreads1 {*
    public static void main(String[] args) {*
    * PipedOutputStream outputPipe = new PipedOutputStream();*
    * ObjectOutputStream oos = null;*
    * ReceiverThread rt = new ReceiverThread(outputPipe);*
    // Start the thread -- First try*
    * Thread t = new Thread(rt);*
    t.start();*
    // Wrap the output pipe with an ObjectOutputStream*
    try*
    oos = new ObjectOutputStream(outputPipe);*
    catch (IOException e)*
    System.out.println(e);*
    // Start the thread -- Second try*
    //Thread t = new Thread(rt);*
    //t.start();*
    /** Send an object over the pipe. In reality this object will be a
    class that contains control or status information */
    try
    if (!oos.equals(null))
    oos.writeObject(new String ("Test"));
    catch (IOException e)
    try
    Thread.sleep(5000);
    catch (InterruptedException e)
    I read somewhere that it matters where you start the thread relative to where you wrap piped streams with the object streams. So, I tried the two places I felt were obvious to start the thread. These are noted in the comments. Here is the code for the thread.
    package playingwiththreads1;
    import java.io.*;
    public class ReceiverThread implements Runnable {
    private PipedInputStream inputPipe = new PipedInputStream();
    private ObjectInputStream inputObject;
    ReceiverThread (PipedOutputStream outputPipe)
    System.out.println("Thread initialization - start");
    try
    inputPipe.connect(outputPipe);
    inputObject = new ObjectInputStream(inputPipe);
    catch (IOException e)
    System.out.println(e);
    System.out.println("Thread initialization - complete");
    public void run()
    System.out.println("Thread started");
    try
    if (inputObject.available() > 0)
    System.out.println(inputObject.read());
    catch (IOException e)
    System.out.println(e);
    Through testing I have determined that no matter where I start the thread, the thread never gets past the "inputObject = new ObjectInputStream(inputPipe);" assignment.
    Could someone please help me with this? There are other ways for me to write this program, but this is the one that I would like to make work.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Rob Hix

    Thanks for the help, but that did not work. I tried flushing the ObjectOutputStream and it is still hanging when initializing the thread.
    Here is a better look at the code since I was helped to figure out how to insert it:
    The main method:
    package playingwiththreads1;
    import java.io.*;
    public class PlayingWithThreads1 {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            PipedOutputStream outputPipe = new PipedOutputStream();
            ObjectOutputStream oos = null;
            ReceiverThread rt = new ReceiverThread(outputPipe);
            // Start the thread -- First try
            //Thread t = new Thread(rt);
            //t.start();
            // Wrap the output pipe with an ObjectOutputStream
            try
                oos = new ObjectOutputStream(outputPipe);
                oos.flush();
            catch (IOException e)
                System.out.println(e);
            // Start the thread -- Second try
            Thread t = new Thread(rt);
            t.start();
            /* Send an object over the pipe.  In reality this object will be a
             * class that contains control or status information */
            try
                if (!oos.equals(null))
                    oos.writeObject(new String ("Test"));
                    oos.flush();
            catch (IOException e)
                System.out.pringln(e);
            try
                Thread.sleep(5000);
            catch (InterruptedException e)
    }The thread code:
    package playingwiththreads1;
    import java.io.*;
    public class ReceiverThread implements Runnable {
        private PipedInputStream inputPipe = new PipedInputStream();
        private ObjectInputStream inputObject;
        ReceiverThread (PipedOutputStream outputPipe)
            System.out.println("Thread initialization - start");
            try
                inputPipe.connect(outputPipe);
                inputObject = new ObjectInputStream(inputPipe);
            catch (IOException e)
                System.out.println(e);
            System.out.println("Thread initialization - complete");
        public void run()
            System.out.println("Thread started");
            try
                if (inputObject.available() > 0)
                    System.out.println(inputObject.read());
            catch (IOException e)
                System.out.println(e);
    }Does anyone else have and ideas?

    // really need to do this, but it makes our code more readable
    wordToFind = args[0];
    // We're going to read the file one line at a time. For each
    // line, we'll create a StringTokenizer object to break the line
    // into distinct words, checking each word to see if it's the same
    // as the given search word.
    // Read first line from the file
    currentLine = inputFile.readLine();
    while (currentLine != null) // Repeat until we reach EOF
    // Have a valid input line, increment the counter
    lineCount++;
    // Create a StringTokenizer object over the current line
    StringTokenizer tokens = new StringTokenizer(currentLine);
    // Check each word in the string by accessing each token
    while (tokens.hasMoreTokens())
    // See if the next word is the one we're looking for and
    // advance the token iterator to the next token
    if (wordToFind.equals(tokens.nextToken()))
    // Yes, display the current line number
    System.out.println(wordToFind + " found on line " + lineCount);
    // Read next line from the file
    currentLine = inputFile.readLine();
    } // while
    // Done with the input file
    inputFile.close();
    // Display the running time of this program in milliseconds by
    // subtracting the start time from the current time
    System.out.println((System.currentTimeMillis() - startTime) + " milliseconds");
    } // main
    } // WordFinder

    You may create Queue object. (I guess that you're already know QUEUE)
    Then ... use producer thread to load input file into queue. (Enqueue)
    Consumer ... dequeue
    Queue can be empty because of
    - Input file was read to EOF and Consumer had produced all queue.
    or
    - Cunsumer works too fast... So the queue is empty.
    So, you may have to use ... wait() in Consumer in case of the queue is empty.
    And use notify() in Producer to wake up consumer ...
    Is this right ?

    It looks like you have some code making an RMI call over the network.
    Is it calling another server, or perhaps a loopback call into the same
    server. The latter (opening a socket to your own process) is a good
    way
    to get a deadlock.

  • J2ME problem with threads

    Hi all,
    I would like to ask you for a help. I need to write a small program at my university. I started to write a midlet which function would be to countdown time for sports activities. I woul like to start a new thread - the one that counts down - and at the same time make the main thread sleep. After the "countdown" thread finishes, the main thread wakes up and waits for user input. The problem is that when the "countdown" thread finishes his work, I've got Uncaught exception java/lang/NullPointerException. error and the midlet halts.
    Below you can find the code
    import java.lang.*;
    import java.util.*;

    Groovemaker,
    Your Licznik class has a member m of type monitor, which has not been instantiated (in other words is null) hence, when calling m.put() you get NullPointerException. Please also mind, that using Thread.sleep(1000) is not an accurate way of measuring time.
    If I may, please use recommended for Java class naming conventions - some of your names use lower case, while other don't which is confusing to the reader.

    Hi aarthi,
    SELECT can be used to fetch data only from database tables/views. in your case you used SELECT from an INTERNAL table,which is not allowed.
    SELECT  *
           FROM <DBTABLE NAME>
           INTO TABLE EXPORT_REC
           WHERE KEY = IMPORT_ PARAMETER AND
           IMPORT_PARAM_DATE BETWEEN FROM_DATE AND TO_DATE.
    HERE Instead of <DBTABLE NAME>,you have to give your Database table,which stores these values.
    then your data will comes into EXPORT_REC.
    and remember to give EXPORT_REC in TABLES parameters of that FUNCTION MODULE and give associated Type for that.

  • Who can HELP me with an seemingly impossible iTunes dilemma?

    Good day all and greetings from Malta (EU),
    I have what seems to be the need for an "impossible" solution. Let me explain my dilemma.
    I have never wanted to use the new versions of iTunes past 10.7 for ONLY ONE simple reason that the developers of iTunes have decided to eliminate.
    I am a digital dj - I use iTunes as my cataloging system for all the tracks I play. I am the kind of person that likes to prepare as much as possible before I play. Up till 10.7 there was an option to open MULTIPLE playlist windows. This was very important to me because that would mean practically that how ever the mood moved on the dance floor I was able to just choose from the open playlist windows without having to spend needless time searching for them while playing (which can be a big distraction)
    I have recently purchased my FIRST Mac (17" MacbookPro) and I have Yosemite running on it. I have followed tutorials to downgrade iTunes (using Pacifier & AppZapper) to 10.7 in order to get the only one feature I needed but was not available in future upgrades.
    I have a few problems. When I connect my iPhone it is not recognised and when I use the finder window I constantly get error messages popping up.
    So here's the thing. I DON'T mind re-installing the updated version of iTunes to make the OS run properly and to connect my iPhone but I can't do this without the old version as well.
    Is there a way to be able to rename the 10.7 version of iTunes so I can continue using that and it's own library AND also be able to install the latest iTunes so I can eliminate my problems and continue using the 10.7 version. I can point out that the updated version does not need to have the same library... I'd ONLY need that to eliminate the error messages & be able to connect my devices.
    can ANYONE PLEASE PLEASE help me with this dilemma? I searched "high and low" on Google and in the Apple Support Forum but I have failed to find an solution....
    Thanks and I am sooooo looking forward to someone helping me as soon as possible.
    And Happy Holidays EVERYONE!!!
    Chris Brown

    You could repartition your drive to have a different OS X with the older iTunes there, and the newer iTunes on the existing partition. Back up everything beforehand. See Kappy's advice in this thread. Partitioning my Hard Drive

  • I will pay for who can help me with this applet

    Hi!, sorry for my english, im spanish.

    Ive make an applet that sends files to a FTP Server with a progress bar.
    Its works fine on my IDE (JBuilder 9), but when I load into Internet Explorer (signed applet) it crash. The applet seems like blocked: it show the screen of java loading and dont show the progress bar, but it send the archives to the FTP server while shows the java loading screen.
    I will pay with a domain or with paypal to anyone who can help me with this problematic applet. I will give my code and the goal is only repair the applet. Only that.
    My email: [email protected]
    thanks in advance.
    adios!

    thaks for yours anwswers..
    harmmeijer: the applet is signed ok, I dont think that is the problem...
    itchyscratchy: the server calls are made from start() method. The applet is crashed during its sending files to FTP server, when finish, the applet look ok.
    The class I use is FtpBean: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Code/9129/javabean/ftpbean/
    (I test too with apache commons-net, and the same effect...)
    The ftp is Filezilla in localhost.
    This is the code, I explain a little:
    The start() method calls iniciar() method where its is defined the array of files to upload, and connect to ftp server. The for loop on every element of array and uploads a file on subirFichero() method.
    Basicaly its this.
    The HTML code is:
    <applet
           codebase = "."
           code     = "revelado.Upload.class"
           archive  = "revelado.jar"
           name     = "Revelado"

  • Please help me with this error: "Apple application support was not found... Error 2"

    Can anyone please help me with this error: "Apple application support was not found... Error 2"
    I've followed the instructions by removing all Apple files from my laptop, but when I reinstall the iTunes software it still comes up with this message:
    "Apple application support is required to run iTunesHelper. Please uninstall iTunes, then install iTunes again. Error 2"
    Thank you

    iTunes "Apple Application Support is required... Error 2" and possible fix.
    I know this is a bit late but I came accross this thread trying to resolve this same problem and came up with a solution that worked for me, so thought I would share it here too. I hope it helps someone else.
    I just resolved this on Win Vista (should apply equally for Win7 too). Please uninstall iTunes before proceeding though. I'll walk you through the process I followed, if you like you can jump straight to the Solution section.
    Problems:
    The initial error during the installation of iTunes was:
    An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.CRT,version="8.0.50727.4053",type="win32",publicKeyToken='1fc8b 3b9a1e18e3b",processorarchitecture="x86". Please refer to Help and Support for more information. HRESULT:0x8007054F
    The error (after installing iTunes) when trying to run iTunes was:
    Apple Application Support is required to run iTunes. Please uninstall iTunes, then install iTunes again. Error 2 (Windows error 2).
    After trying various fixes around the forums I came across this MSKB article, which relates to the first installation error:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2688946
    This lead me to trying to install MS Visual C++ but I received the following error trying to install that:
    Error 1935.An error occurred during the installation of assembly ‘Microsoft.VC80.ATL,type=”win32”,version=”8.0.50727.762”,publicKeyToken=”1fc8b3 b9a1e18e3b”,processorArchitecture=”amd64”’. Please refer to Help and Support for more information. HRESULT: 0x80070BC9. Assembly interface: IassemblyCacheItem, function: Commit, component: {837BF1EB-D770-94EB-A01F-C8B3B9A1E18E}
    Note: The installation of VC++ rolls back when it fails.
    Solution:
    Through this error I found this MSKB article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946414
    The Automated MS "Fix It" msi package didn’t work.
    Note: Please backup your registry first (see the above MSKB article for instructions).
    I opened the registry and (as instructed in the MSKB article) deleted the following keys:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS\
    PendingXmlIdentifier
    NextQueueEntryIndex
    AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving
    Reboot and reinstall iTunes.
    If it helps you please like this so others can find it.

  • Please help me with spry bar menu

    I have laid out my page with the div tags in Dreamweaver. I defined the  different sections by putting colors in them until i am ready to put stuff into them however when i insert the spry menu bar into my navigation section, the area below it is behaving like a drop down box  of color. What i mean is that the area below which is supposed to stretch from left to right as a single box is now broken up by a different color box the width of the spry bar and goes down to the next box. When i preview it in the browser the page appears normal. How can i get rid of the intruding box in dreamweaver.

    HI
    I am practicing for the webmaster design course pratical exam. The web page i will be asked to construct will consist of a home page with two or three other pages pages in the site it will have to link to.  I know how to do most of the steps individualy but i do not know in what order some of them are done. What i mean is this. ... after setting up the root folder..images..laying out the divs .. i would like to know ... at what point do i do the various things like, set up a styles folder...make a template... make the other pages of the site ..etc. I think i am able to do nearly all of these things but not sure in what order they should be done so the site will work.
    I have reached the point where i have established the site and layout, i.e. the wrapper, logo, navigation,header,bodycontent,right and left columns, clearbar, footer. i would like someone to list the sequence i should follow after this. I am praticing on a trial CS5.5 which seems to simplfy to a freat extent what we learned on the course because it is a later version. The version we used on course was  CS4  and if the pratical is in this version then i will need to know how it is done in this format.

  • Problem with Thread.sleep()

    hi all,
    I am trying Thread.sleep() method to introduce a delay. In the program i ask the user to specify the value to be entered in Thread.sleep() (to indicate the amount of delay desired by the user). but strangely, if a low value is entered, i get a different result which actually should not happen as the rest of the calculation remains the same, only the amt of delay changes.
    could anyone help me with this
    cheers
