Re Install on New Drive wont reboot (mostly)

Im going mad...
We have had to move our mail server to another system and I have put a brand new drive in the xserve and done a clean install of Server 10.5 did all the updates etc. If I restart the Xserve, I get the mac icon and then it changes to a circle with a slash through it and just sits there.
If I leave it for about 10 minutes it sometimes actually boots up but mostly it doesn't.
I thought it may be the hard drive, so I used another new one, different brand and I get the same thing. If I put the old original drive back in, it boots up just fine.
Why doesnt it like any of my drives to reboot.?
If I boot up of the DVD and goto disc utils, the drive is there. Do a reapir permissions and repair disc (nothing wrong), yet still it wont boot reliably
Any Suggestions?
Cheers
Tony

Boot in 'verbose' mode, hold 'Cmd-v'. When the server starts, watch the messages on-screen for clues as to what's hanging the boot process.
-Or-
Boot off the DVD. Go to the 'Utilities' menu. Select 'Terminal...'. Then do:
more /Volumes/NameofBootDrive/private/var/log/system.log
Scroll through the log by using the space bar to advance the screen. Look at the messages from the latest boot times.

  • Installing a new driver quest

I noticed there are new drivers (/06) out there for the SB Audigy cards. My question is, do I need to uninstall the existing drivers first? Or, do I just install new downloaded drivers over top?
I know with video card drivers that you need to uninstall the old ones first...
    Thanks for any input!

    Creative is, uh, different.
You better just uninstall Audio Console, reboot, and run the new driver update (which also installs Audio Console.)
That's what I did. Works perfect. They uninstall the old driver, ask you to reboot (say yes), then install the new driver and Audio Console. Then they ask you to reboot (say yes), and this is done before Windows Startup programs run so your virus scanner and stuff shouldn't interfere. Just make sure you shut that down before initially running the download setup so the first part goes right.
Uninstalling Creative stuff has often caused unpleasant effects when trying to install it again. Like "No SoundBlaster audio hardware installed, please install such and run setup again," and the like. Sometimes only "format c:" fixes this!
Make sure you also download and install the DVD Audio update after installing the new driver.

  • My HD died and the Apple store installed the new drive and upgraded me to Mavericks.  I no longer have iPhoto which I miss very much.  How do I get it back and do I need it or do my pics go somewhere else? help

My Hard Drive died and when the Apple store installed the new drive they upgraded me to Mavericks.  I no longer had iPhoto.  Where do I get iPhoto, do I need it and where are my pictures going when they import???  Help I'm SO confused and frustrated.  Thank you.

    You need two items
    1 - the iPhoto application -
You install it from the App Store
2 - and the iPhoto library - restore form your backup from just before the disk died - no importing involved - simply restore and launch iPhoto and it will look in the pictures folder and open it and it will be exactly the way it was when you made the backup
As to your question Do you need it - No you can manage your photos anyway you please - iPhoto is a good way but not required - you can use any software you want and you can import photos using image Capture (in your applications folder)  or any other software you choose - If you use iPhoto then they by default going your iPhoto library - if you use other software then they go where you say to put them

A blank drive needs to be formatted first, you do that hold c boot (or hold option key boot) from the 10.6 install disk (or Lion USB)

  • Installing on new drive and copying files to it

I have a Macpro with a 500GB drive running 10.5.4 that contains the OS, applications and my media. I would like to put either a 1TB or 2TB drive into it and put Snow Leopard on it and transfer all of my data and files (almost 450GB) to the new drive.
1.) How do I install the new OS on the new drive after I swap it out with the old one?
2.) What is the best way to copy all of my media and files to the new drive after the OS is installed?
    Thanks.

Put the new drive in and keep the old one as well.
Boot from the SL DVD and install it on the new drive.
Once you boot in SL for the first time, use the Migration Assistant to transfer your stuff. Point it to the old drive.
You could also clone your old drive on the new drive using Supper Dupper and then upgrade to SL. If it was me that's what I would do, because I don't like Migration Assistant. But it's your choice..

  • HT1533 I have an old PowerBook G4 I installed a new drive how do I load the new OS

I have an old PowerBook G4 I installed a new hard drive how do I load in the OS

You'll need the Original system discs that came with your system when you bought it or a Upgrade DVD for a newer version of OSX that you bought and installed over the top of the original version. Either should boot the system and allow you to install that version of OS X.
But you will still need the original Applications DVD to reinstall the iLife Apps.
If you do not have them you can order a Replacement set from Apple for a small charge.
To boot the system from a DVD you can either hold down the C key when starting the system, that tells the system to boot from the DVD drive, or hold down the Option key when starting and that will bring up the Boot Menu screen where you select the DVD/DVD drive as the Boot source.

  • Install on new drive

    Hi All
I have bought a new SSD drive and want to do a fresh os install and the restore my programs from time machine.
I have Mountain Lion on my dvd and have replaced the drive but when I go to install I can not see any hard drive to install on
Can anyone give any advise here please
    Thanks
    Glenn

You need to boot from another drive, either the DVD or an external hard drive, and partition, or initialize, the SSD just like a new hard drive. If you have another mac and a firewire cable, you could use target disk mode too. Bring up Disk Utility, click partition, give the drive a name, the number of partitions (most use one), format in mac OS extended (journaled), click options to ensure it's GUID format, then apply.

  • New install on new drive - Corrupt label - wrong magic number

    Hi,
I put a new 120GB Seagate drive in my Sun Blade 100, and installed Solaris 9 9/05. But, every time I boot, I see a WARNING msg:
    WARNING: .... (dad0)
corrupt label - wrong magic number
I installed from the 1st software CD, as I've done many times before, but this is the 1st time I've done an installation on a new, non-Sun hard drive, so from what I can tell, I need to do something additional to prevent having this warning, but I can't figure out what.
I've tried "boot cdrom -s" and then format -> partition, and I can see that the swap and backup slices had started in cylinder 0. From what I've read, that's a problem, so I changed swap to start in cylinder 1.
Here's what format->part->print looks like now:

    Hi,
I think that I fixed the swap ending cylinder, but I'm still getting the same warning when I boot the system. Here's the new format->partition->print:

What else can I do to try to eliminate this warning?

  • Ilife missing on Lion (mac Book Pro) after installing on new drive

Certified apple service installed the Lion os on a SDD drive in Mac Book Pro 15''. I received the Mac and on the same day went with a SDD drive to iStore so that they would replace the drives and install the OS on it.
The problem is that I don't see iLife on it and as far as I know it should be included. The app store doesn't even show it to me...
    Any idea what to do??

Take a look at these instructions.
Restoring iLife applications after Internet Restore of OS X Lion
If you reinstall Lion on a new Mac that shipped with OS X Lion installed, on an erased or replaced hard drive, you can download iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand from the Mac App Store.
    After installation, start from Lion.
Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
    Click Purchases.
If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your Lion based computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to compete installation of your applications.

  • Upgrade ssd can i move orig win 8 install onto new drive???

hi thanks for help with this its Brawney    just a follow up  i easily upgraded my hp desktop machine with ssd. i used the data migration software that comes along with the samsung magician software with 840 evo 250 drive.
basically the instructions in samsungs ssd drive box show pictures in instructions that make you think you need to have a usb adaptor that attaches drive from outside  to do this on desktop. I didnt need this adaptor on my desktop.  What you do need is a sata 3 cable  to attach drive to motherboard when you open it up. Also inside my hp desktop there was a place to put my ssd that fit its size 2.5   but you need 2 screws to attach drive which the drive didnt come with.  you could probably just rig it in there with a small piece of electrical tape lol.   So all i did was back up my favorites from browser and files on my machine i thought were important just to be safe . Next i installed disc that came with samsung ssd with data migration software and samsung magician. Next i opened up case with everything turned off with power cord unplugged from case and attached drive to motherboard with sata 3 cable. next i turned machine back on . then in win 8.1 i right clicked start button and selected computer management then said yes to pop up then selected storage and then clicked on disk magementment to see if new ssd could be seen inside there. I believe i right clicked on area where ssd drive was to be and created new simple volume and said yes or next to all defaults that popped up. This made drive be seen.      i think another way to double check if drive can be seen is to open samsung magician real quick to see if it sees the new ssd. here is a good youtube video that is good for if you want to learn how to make drive be seen(partitioned/initialized) and if you still wanna use hard drive that came with hp as a second drive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMo8krAJd5Q      this video also talks about going into bios and switching boot order  so new ssd is first in boot order which is somethin you do after you do data migration.  Now that your ssd drive is seen just open up data migration software and hit start to move your operating system  and all data on it over to new ssd  .  after this finishes you need to turn machine off then turn it on and then hit f10 to get into bios on hp machine  watch you tube video if you need help you just need ssd first in boot order now so you boot to new ssd    Once this is done you can open samsung magician software and check drive performance and click sections to optimize new ssd to run best.. Thank for helping me to have confidence that i could do this.  I was gonna buy win 7 and do clean install but screw it i saved money i cloned os over and it runs quicker      In the magician software im getting 531 mb on sequential read and 495 on sequential write and i did not use rapid mode      its good        If anyone wants to ad anything to this if i missed anything please do to help others      Niccii helped me so i thought i would help also

  • Cannot get OS X installed on new drive!

I have totally exhausted my bag of tricks. My MacBook slowed to a crawl suddenly and has become completely unusable. It's symptoms fit that of a bad hard drive. I have bought a new WD Blue 1TB and tried to do internet recovery several times. A few times it has hung up on the partitioning process. The times I had been able to successfully partition, I start the reinstallation process and leave it running. After a few days or so it makes no progress and the remaining time keeps growing. Okay.... So I come up with an OS X lion bootable DVD (It is a mid 2012 MacBook Pro and lion is what internet recovery tries to reinstall). I boot to it and I get a symbol with a strikethrough and the laptop turns off. I have came up with a couple different bootable mountain lion DVDs and it isn't detected as bootable media! What do I do next? I mean the laptop is 3 years old and I just can't believe this is all I am going to get out of it.... Any and all help/suggestions is very welcome and appreciated.

The MBP Retina 13" (which is what I assume you have) comes with a special build of OS X 10.8.1 installed. At the moment, an update to 10.8.2 is not available. Supposedly, Apple is working on one. Until it's released, you can't install FCP.

  • How to do a FRESH install on NEW drive

I had my iMac's internal HD upgraded to 1TB today. The drive is a blank canvas so far. I've installed multiple OS Xs on Macs with factory drives, but never a retail drive. Do I do it the same way? i.e. pop in the disc and go to work?
I plan on reserving 15GB for Windows XP (gotta play Magic Online somehow)

    Piece of cake
Just insert the DVD and go through the normal process.
When the system reboots, you should be given a selection of drives on which to install Leopard.
Just be sure to select the proper one - the empty one and wait.

I right-clicked the iPhone in Device Manager and chose Update Driver (for me, the iPhone was showing up in the Device Manager under Imaging Devices).
I selected "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and clicked Next.
I chose "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install" and clicked Next.
In the next window there were 2 drivers to choose from: the "Digital Still Camera" driver that my PC kept thinking the iPhone was, and Apple Mobile Device USB Driver. I selected the Apple Mobile Device driver.
The driver installed, and at that point iTunes 9.2 could finally detect the iPhone. Yay!"
