Re-Installing OS X Created Problems
Hey guys. I turned on my MacBook Pro today and it didn't go past the blue screen. After the troubleshooting options didn't fix it, I was advised to re-install the operating system. So I did. And it seemed like everything was left in tact, but I'm quickly finding that's not the case...
- Quicktime doesn't open movie files that it used to (.avi)
- iPhoto shows that all my old pictures are there in thumbnail view, but I cannot view them larger when I click on them. I can drag them outside of iPhoto so that I have the file on my computer, but re-importing it or any other new .jpeg does not work, it says that it is an unrecognized file format (though clearly a .jpeg)
- Mac Messenger has lost all display picture capabilities (even upon re-installing), and cannot read .jpegs - again saying it's not a valid picture file format
- iTunes has lost all my music
I was told when I called Apple that everything would be kept in tact, but that's clearly not the case. Any solutions to these problems would be greatly appreciated!
Didn't erase the hard drive. Brought it into the Apple store - they did the same thing but installed all the necessary software updates immediately after and restarted again, and things seem to be running smooth.

Will installing X11 update create any problem to my iMac?
While trying to run the recent Gimp update (2.6.4), the X11 needed to be updated to latest version (2.3.2.1). Apple installed version shows 2.1.5 on my iMac & software update is not showing the latest version.
So, I am hesitant (scared?) to install latest X11 version & keen to know anyone installed it without any problems to their Macs & other applications etc. Thanks for any input.

I haven't done it but many people on this forum have. It works fine. the only thing you should remember is that you'll have to reinstall it after every system update. -
2014 .3 is much too buggy and full of error messages. Creating problems as I am on a timeline with my client and I don't have time to fool around with all the problems.
You didn't mention what error(s) you've encountered? A workaround for the most commonly hit problem is here Re: error in Muse : Object UID:U6875 has two (or more) owners: U3633 and U3165
If you have a copy of your .muse file that has not been saved using 2014.3, you can downgrade by uninstalling Muse and then choose Previous Version in the Filters drop down in the Apps panel of the Creative Cloud desktop app. There will be a popup next to Muse where you can select a prior version to install. -
I wish to rename my drive letter & not create problems
I had an SSD installed on my PC. The SSD is 'C' & kept for programs only. The other drive letters I have currently got displayed don't make much sense.I started with CD burner & Blu-ray burner & got them away from my own files by changing the drive letters to Y & Z. A USB drive which is red in color is not R drive.
I want to give the drive that has all of my music files & its catalog data another letter. I want to do this without having problem with file associations etc. How is this done without creating problems? My photos are also on this drive but I know that I can just direct that program to its catalog location.
Since an SSD is fast enough it apparently doesn't need to be indexed. What I have done is plugged a couple of my external drives into the PC & had Windows index every drive except 'C'. I don't know is indexing will automatically updated the index to reflect the new drive letter for my music files but it It doesn't I'll ask for it to be done again.
Thanks in advanceJust before I did this I when I opened iTunes I got the message that said that I must have changed by burner or something to the effect & that I had to re install the program.
I held of doing this because I wanted to change the drive letter first. This I did & that appears to have worked.
I hadn't made any changes to DVD burning software. I did see that there was a new 64 bit version available so I downloaded & installed it.
The next time I opened the program I got the same message that I needed to re install the program. When I went to tell it where the library.itl I must have directed it to the wrong library as it asked me again about my account details & wanted my credit cards details. Only after I give this information did I find that the library that I had nominated was in fact the account for my wife's iPad.
So now I have 2 major problems firstly I'm linked to my wife's account where it displays the few things she purchased. My library was make up 100% from all of my old CD's that I had ripped. nothing else. How do I connect to the other library.itl file?
The second problem is that even though I downloaded & & installed a new version of iTunes I'm getting the message that I need to reinstall because my burning software has changed & it hasn't. How do I get past these problems?

I replaced my 2010-2011 iMac internal HD i dont have an install disk i created one with my external HD but when i go to install lion onto my imac it stays at the apple logo screen.HELP ME PLEASE!
Boot from the original Install disc that came with the computer and then format the drive Mac OS Extended (Journaled) using the GUID partition. Then you can re-install OS X. If you no longer have the original media call AppleCare with the serial number of the machine (look on the bottom of the stand) and for a nominal fee they will ship you replacement media.
The chances are very good you will have fan problems if you used an off-the-shelf HD, beginning in 2009 Apple began using HD's from vendors that incorporated heat sensors into the HD. If you did not buy the same type of HD your computer will think the HD is overheating causing the fans to run at full speed. -

saqibYou might want to check and see if your hostname or DNS information is going to change along with the IP. Any and all of these changes WILL affect the move, and all have to be dealt with - usually by reconfiguring the listener and server parameters. Changing these items is not a trivial task and expect a few bumps before you get things back up. The name resolution will be key to the clients, so don't forget to check the DNS records.

Install hangs on Creating Services

after de-installing Oracle XE and trying to re-install XE the installer hangs (well I waited more than 2 hours) on Creating Services...
Got an idea what could be wrong?
Laptop has 2GB of RAM and plenty of free space.

echo onThis is a known problem on faster machines - there is a race condition around starting and stopping the OracleXETNSListener service. Basically it is started, it binds the port, it is stopped (but the OS doesn't release the port), and then the service is immediately started again, before the OS has released the port. At this point it fails with a 'Port already in use' error message.
One possible workaround is to de-install (and that can be a little difficult, as it didn't complete installation - see a hint below), and then re-install. As soon as it gets to the 'Creating Services' stage, go to Control Panel and manually start OracleXETNSListener. The install should continue at this point.
If this workaround doesn't work, try the install again, but this time try to swamp the CPU with some other processing.
If it hasn't installed enough to de-install via Add/Remove Programs, run the installer again. It will basically try to repair what is there, and will complete the install (but not create a database). At that stage, you should be able to use Add/Remove programs. -
i have the latest version of free Quicktime, Itunes and unable to view video on my PC all i get is a pink screen the audio is OK i have uninstalled and installed several times same problem, i have a Iphone 4 and unable to view the content.
Open your QuickTime control panel (either via the Control panels, or by going "Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences" in the Quicktime Player). In the Advanced tab, uncheck Enable Direct3D video acceleration:
... and click OK. Quit and restart the QuickTime Player prior to checking to see if the settings change has had any effect. -
my iphone 4 will no longer connect to my Itunes since 7.1.1 update, itunes has latest update as well followed help which involved using mobile device properties no good re installed itunes still same problem iphone is showing up on pc as connected but itunes unable to see it

Steve Jobs obviously was "the man" because every update or install now gives me problems... i can no longer download anything to my iphone.. giving me errors of "cannot install at this time" and i get an error installing itunes on my other laptop... wth is going on!??!
ok so the download problem with my iphone.. what could be the cause of that? ive restarted and deleted the "undownloaded app" over 10 times already. and restarted the iphone 10 times... next thing i know i cant install itunes on my laptop.... geez man..
obviously there is a fix which someone will help... but why should i have to go through all that crap to install a so called uncomplicated software... when you think about it this really shouldnt even be an issue.
normally if the thing dosent work. normally with most programs you just uninstall the uncompleted software and just reinstall and everything is usually good to go.. help!ive never had any problems with ap[ple products in the past... this is a first and a stupid problem if you ask me

I have several keynote presentations on my newish computer but am not unable to open them. I get the message "keynote cannot be installed because of a problem" (unspecified). Does anybody know why this happend? Does it related to using Microsoft "University" 2011? How can I fix it? Thanks!

This all started when my mouse/thumb clicker was going crazy. Found an expanded battery. Obviously need a new battery. Unfortunately must wait 6 weeks to get my new battery. Meanwhile, I'm running my computer on AC only, as there appears to be no other option. I was informed that when using AC only (no battery) some high-energy-use programs like Office might not function.
Do you know if there is away to use office even when just using AC and not having the battery in? I'm doubting if I have other OSX problems because everything else works: email, safari, itunes, iphoto, quicktime, etc . . . . ?

When firefox checking for updates and updates found but due to proxy restrictions it unable to download the updates then it continue trying to download that and this time it creating problem on executing javascript and raising errors.

I just installed Lion on my iMac, which was purchased in 2007, and I cannot print from Preview; it keeps locking up and not responding. So, I have to force quit Preview. I have been sending error reports to Apple. I suggest everyone who has this problem, send error reports!
I can print from other applications, like Pages, with my Canon Laserjet. I do not think it is a printer issue becasue I can print in other application.
I took your advice and installed Adobe reader. Now I can print pdf's.

I upgraded to 4 and lost the use of the back/forward buttons when in a new tab (ok on homepage) Re-installed 3.6 but problem still persists. Any remedy ????

Hello. I am installing Oracle 11gR2 RAC using 2 Virtual Machines (rac1 and rac2 whose OS are Oracle Linux 5.6) in VMPlayer and according to the tutorial

At the first time, I create VM rac1. While its OS Oracle Linux 5.6 is booting, initializing ASMLib Driver OK. I create 5 ASM disks successfully using the command:
[root@rac1 /]# /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk ASMDISK1 /dev/sdb1
Output: Marking disk "ASMDISK1" as an ASM disk: OK
Because the hard disk space of rac1 is not enough to install Database, I create VM rac1 again with bigger hard disk space (30GB). I do everything the same with that at the first time. But this time, While OS Oracle Linux 5.6 is booting, initializing ASMLib Driver failed. I create 5 ASM disks using the same command:
[root@rac1 /]# /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk ASMDISK1 /dev/sdb1
Output: Marking disk "ASMDISK1" as an ASM disk: failed
But when I use the command:
[root@rac1 /]# /etc/init.d/oracleasm listdisks

My questions are:
First, can the 5 disks "ASMDISK1 ASMDISK2 ASMDISK3 ASMDISK4 ASMDISK5" be used correctly in spite of Marking disk "ASMDISK1(2 3 4 5)" as an ASM disk failed ?
Second, how to fix OS Oracle Linux 5.6 so that initializing ASMLib Driver OK while booting ?
