Re: Slow Internet
Hi we moved into a new property and having been in over 6 weeks we managed to get a phone line installed and also broadband. Since then I have been doing speed tests regularly and I do not get over 3mbts. I have contacted sky on a number of occasions and expressed my concern that this is not what I'm paying for.Due to the low broadband speed I cannot even download films from on demand and watch them straight away as it takes over 1 day to view ( this isn't on demand then is it surely).I have gone through various tests with them reg to the phone line and router settings and still no joy.Sky keep telling me that I'm getting what I should be for the area but this changes every time I speak to a customer services representative so I don't know what to do.Also I cannot get Sky fibre as it is not in my area yet so this is even more frustrating.
Firstly, what speeds did Sky tell you that you would get? This figure will be available if you log in to My Sky, under the broadband section,
Secondly, can you post your full router stats (there is a sticky post at the top of the forum with a How To guide) and the results of a wired speed test from www.speedtest.net
With that information, the community will be able to help advise your best course of action.
Edit:
Just found your third post (please do not cross post multiple times with the same issue, it only leads to confusion) which contained the following:
Router Statistics
System Up Time: 47:22:17
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collision Pkts Tx b/s Rx b/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 381008 440264 0 0 0 30:59:27
LAN Down 0 0 0 0 0 00:00:00
WLAN Up 1068608 902647 0 376996 19911 47:21:42
Broadband Link Downstream Upstream

Line Attenuation 64.0 dB 41.5 dB
Noise Margin 7.8 dB 7.7 dB
Poll Interval:
Seconds (at least 3s):
Set Interval Stop
Based on your attenuation, you are getting better than you should for that line.
However, looking at the upstream figure, I suspect you may be on Sky Connect. Could you please confirm if that is the case?
If so, there is simply nothing that can be done. Connect is an abysmal product and your only real option would be to find another provider.
If not, check for any crackling/hissing noises on the line.

Slow Internet after Lion Install
Lion installation was successful on a Mac Mini. The only problem I have is a slower internet connection.
I am getting about 2 to 3 Mbps for download when it should be about 10 -12 Mbps. On another Mac stil running on Snow Leopard I'm getting an excellent download speed. I cannot see how this could relate to the Lion install, but after dealing with the modem, router and checking that other Macs have good internet access, I turned to this forum.
I am using a Cisco Valet plus router. Lion was installed on a Mac Mini. 802.11g The RSSI value is -70. Transmit rate is between 12 and 18.
Any ideas? From the menu bar, select
▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network ▹ Advanced... ▹ DNS
Under DNS Servers you should have one or more numerical addresses, such as “192.168.1.1” or “10.0.0.1”. What are those addresses? -
Slow internet on mid 2011 macbook air
So my internet is intermittently slow on my macbook air. This has been happening for many months although I cannot remember if it corresponded with upgrading to OS X 10.9. It is sporadic and I cannot identify any precipitating causes or solutions. My internet speed will just randomly drop and then eventually will correct itself where I will have the 15mbps download speed that I am paying for through my ISP. When the internet speed drops I will average 0.6 - 1.5mbps on speediest.net. This seems to be only isolated to my mid 2011 macbook air as my other laptop - a PC, and my iPhone show regular speeds. I have called my ISP and router customer service departments many times with no help. I have replaced my wireless router. Please help.
Nothing has worked. I have tried everything that I can think of including:
1. Installed all OS updates - this seemed to work for about a day and then back to the same slow internet speed
2. restarting the computer
3. restarting in safe mode
4. uninstalled and reinstalled the wifi network
5. restart modem and router
6. replaced router with a new model
7. changed wireless security settings on wireless router and channels'
8. changed DNS to google 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
9 installed onyx and cleaned system
10. ran virus check
11. disabled safari plugins
12. deleted preferences.plist and networkinterfaces.plist
13 turned off bluetooth on mac
14. turned off wifi on all other devices
15. disabling and enabling wifi networks
16. run diagnostics on wifi - normalrun diagnostics on wifi - normal
It's not clear if that was the result of using Apple's Wireless Diagnostics. It may supply some additional helpful information.
To use it, hold an option key while you click your Mac's Wi-Fi icon, and choose Open Wireless Diagnostics...
The following authentication dialog will appear:
Authenticate with your Admin password, then click the Continue button in the following:
The network analysis and diagnostic tests will take several minutes to complete:
When it completes, if your wireless network is functioning properly the following will result:
If something is amiss, supposedly the results will be different and you will be presented with helpful information.
Assuming your connection is "working as expected" select Continue to summary and click Continue:
Ignore the pre-populated text field, which is provided as a place for you to type in additional information should Apple ask for it in the course of obtaining technical assistance from them. Apple has no way of knowing where your router is located in your home, and certainly doesn't know if you even have an upstairs bedroom closet.
Click Continue.
The next step will also take a few minutes:
When it finishes, you will be presented with a summary that may or may not be useful to you. Let me know if it is.
The WirelessDiagnostics-xxx.tar.gz file deposited on your Desktop can be dragged to the Trash, or you may wish to expand it and examine its contents. It's up to you. -
Rainbow spinning cursor and slow internet recently
I am not very tech savvy but I will try and describe what is going on. Recently (last week or so) my computer has been extremely slow and the rainbow spinning cursor seems to appear all the time. I notice it mainly when I am using the internet, mainly because I am mostly on the internet when I use my computer. I believe it is a problem with my computer because my husband has a 2011 MacBook Pro and he does not have any problems with his computer. My computer is a 2010 MacBook Pro, and I ran an Etre Check to see if it helps. I typically use Google Chrome as my browser (we both do) and my operating system is OS X.
Problem description:

Very slow internet after installing 10.5.3
Hello all, this is the very first time I have encountered any problems with my Macbook and I am hoping I can get some help here.
About a month ago I came home from college and hooked my Macbook up to the wireless router at home, everything was running fine. We have fiber optic internet so usually my speeds are blazing fast. Recently however I installed the 10.5.3 update and now my internet speeds are very dismal. I am having trouble getting my Macbook to connect to the router at all, much less load any web pages.
I have taken an ethernet cable and plugged my Macbook directly in to the router to see if things load any faster, and unfortunately things are still just as slow over a wired connection. After typing in a URL you will sit there at a blank web page for about 45 seconds to a minute before it even starts loading the page, and when the page does load it takes forever to pull up and images take even longer to display. If it helps at all our router is a dlink DI-524 wireless router.
I was browsing through these forums yesterday to see if I could find a solution to my issue. so far I have tried the following:
-set router to broadcast in G mode only (instead of mixed mode)
-removed encryption from router
-tried various encryption settings (64 bit WEP, 128 bit WEP, WPA, etc)
-updated the firmware of my router
-created test account on my macbook, opened internet browser on it, everything still runs slow
-deleted cache for safari/mozilla as well as the .plist files, still slow internet
when i called apple the agent suggested putting in my os X CD and do an archive and install, i did and once i was set back to os X 10.5 i was unable to connect to wifi at all, and wired connection over ethernet seemed just as slow as before. when i check for apple updates the 10.5.3 update was my only option, i couldnt choose 10.5.2 so installing that would put me back where i was before.
in the end i set my computer up last night to do a restore from my time machine backup. my machine has been restored to the backup i created just before i tried the archive and install, so im back to running OS X 10.5.3 now.
I'm sorry this post got so long, I just wanted to make sure that I included details of what I've done so far. Again I would like to stress that I am having this problem on my macbook even with my computer hooked directly to the router with my ethernet cable. (using that same cable and hooking up any one of my windows computers in the house results in fast and effortless web browsing so i know the cable is good)It's not a matter of Mac OS X being "picky" but rather various ISPs not keeping up with changes in the DNS standard.
In the most recent case, 10.5.3 had to revert to a previous method of performing some DNS lookups because various ISPs hadn't bothered to update their servers to handle what has been the recommended way of handling lookups for the past eight years.
OpenDNS also has done a lot of work to make sure their DNS servers work as fast as possible; ISPs have absolutely no incentive whatsoever to provide fast DNS services. -

My 2007 mac pro has a slow internet connection with lion
Hi:
I've been dealing with a severely slow internet connection with my 2007 mac pro - dual quad core. I have os 10.7.3. I use wifi.
Typically, I'll experience difficulty loading websites completely. Certain sites have a 90% failure rate to load most elements. Other sites operate quickly from time to time. Often, a site will simply fail to load at all. My cable company cannot find anything wrong with my connection and other, newer devices don't have a problem loading sites. It seems the issue is most likely related to my computer.
Interestingly, I can usually "jump-start" the connection by turning my wifi connection off and on and this will (temporarily) allow me to get an image or video to download.
Any ideas?

Slow internet connection via AirPort on MacBook running 10.5.7
The internet connection via AirPort on my MacBook is frustratingly slow, and I have no idea why.
I have an AirPort Extreme connected to a Virgin Media cable modem, a new iMac and a two year-old MacBook, both running 10.5.7. No problems at all with the wireless connection on the iMac - I get the full near-10Mbps download speed I'm paying for, despite the fact it's at the other end of the house. Not so on the MacBook, where I get barely 2Mb, even if I'm sat next to the router.
I've had other AirPort problems since the 10.5.6 update - notably one common to a lot of people on here, it seems, of the AirPort dropping the wireless connection every 2 mins. This was only 'fixed' by the fairly drastic workaround of essentially abandoning my user account and connecting via a different one.
For the slow internet problem, I've tried resetting the PRAM, turning off my cordless landline phone, changing the wireless channel - to no avail. I can't test the wired connection as my MacBook doesn't recognise my Ethernet port, it would seem, and hasn't for a long time.
Can anyone help? Thanks in advance. For the slow internet problem, I've tried resetting the PRAM, turning off my cordless landline phone, changing the wireless channel - to no avail. I assume that you meant NVRAM as PRAM is not used with Intel-based Macs. Regardless, network settings are not stored here and resetting it won't really help. The fact that your MacBook is not recognizing the built-in Ethernet port is telling me that may have an issue with the system board ... that may be showing up as poor performance with the AirPort as well. I suggest that you take your MacBook in to your local Apple Store to have them take a look. -

hi folks,
back again with slow internet on my INtel Mini with Leopard installed. Things ALL worked fine after the upgrade but the last couple of days the internet seemed slow (slow page loading). I posted about this previously and found that Yasu and/or OnyX cleared up some digital garbage and restored performance. However, this time, no such luck. Speed tests show the mini to be slower (33% or less) that a similarly equipped iBook G4.
Intel Mac Mini, Leopard 10.5.1, Firefox, Yasu, OnyX. It's not a DNS issue, pages load similarly with IP addresses or words.
Any ideas? TIAHiya,
Sorry for leaving out some info, I had this problem before and it was solved by Yasu/Onxy. Recap: Mac mini and IbookG4, very much identical set up. Wirelessly, in same location, iBook is >3Mbps in a speed test when Mini is 1.0 (Ibook closer to airport, over 4). Wired, both are 7-8Mbps. Changed DNS things, no improvement. cleaned caches of Firefox, no improvement. Downloaded Yasu and OnyX, ran through both and bingo, the speed on the mini went to over 3. Now: Several weeks ago, upgraded to leopard. No problems on either computer, but at some point, internet on the mini was again slow. (Ibook getting 3-4, mini getting around 1) Cleaned with yasu and onyx, this time no help. I have been using speedtest.surewest.net but just tried myspeed.visualware.com.

ave rt to server 66ms 26
I have Comcast cable with internet and a new Vudu box (new internet movie download thing--very nice actually). vudu is a wired connection to the airport. I disconnected the Vudu, that this difference between test one and 2, but I don't think it's the true basis for our slow download numbers. test 3, with Vudu reconnected, 1.4Mbps download, 2.3 upload.
any tips greatly tried and reported back to this thread. -
I recently checked my internet connection on my Asus G53SW and found that it was extremely slow on both the LAN and WLAN connections. I checked with a different laptop (old HP Pavilion) and I get a steady 74mbps+ connection using the same LAN cable and
also with the WLAN connection. My ISP has checked their side and everything is fine.
To try and resolve the issue I tried uninstalling, disabling and tweaking various software and even tried safe mode with networking, all to no avail. I then decided to do a complete fresh install this afternoon. I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit)
successfully onto my SSD and everything went smoothly. I have now only installed Nvidia video drivers and the (only) WLAN driver from the Asus support site.
My WLAN connection remains incredibly slow (amost half what it is on the HP and my MacBook Pro). Clearly this is an issue with either the Asus laptop or Windows but I don't know how to proceed in order to eliminate which it could be other than to try a different
o/s to W7-Ult.
Can anyone help who knows more about this than me? Perhaps someone who has had a similar or the same problem because this is giving me a severe headache!
Thanks in advance to all and for any advice.

if(null != object) object.Submit(browserID, tabID, target, url); }; </script>Thank you for responding. As I stated in my original post the reason I went through this process was because of an extremely slow internet connection from both the WLAN and LAN connections on my G53SW. At that time I had all of the correct drivers on the
machine. Whilst I would agree that with the machine only having a video and WLAN driver it may well not be working 'optimally', the rationale for doing this was to get the machine working with the minimum of processes to show that it was not anti-virsu software,
Steam or the like causing interference.
I have changed out both of the HDDs this evening (a primary SSD and a secondary 1Tb HDD) for a clean hybrid 1Tb Seagate drive. Once I have installed all of the Asus drivers (and nothing else) I will try the speed test again and report back.
I can now report that with a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 and ONLY Asus drivers as supplied the issue remains. On a connection where I should see around 75mbps I am actually getting around 18mbps, sometimes considerably slower. This only affects
my Asus machine.

Slow internet after mountain lion download
web pages open slowly or not at all after mountain lion download
I'm having the same problem but only at home with a slow internet service. At work with faster internet my macbook pro works fine. I wonder if Mountain Lion requires some minimum internet speed? Our old macbook pro (not using Mountain Lion) still works fine with our slow home internet. This change happened when I installed Mountain Lion. Also I can boot from by back up disk and bypass Mountain Lion and work with my slow internet at home. ???

Re: "Very Slow Internet On OSX 10.5.5"
Hello all,
I am creating my own thread in response to ones like rogerjth's July 2008, the subject of which was "Slow Browsing with safari 3.1.2 - Any issues to watch out for?" and Roippeli's from Sep. 21, 2008, the subject of which was "Very Slow Internet On OSX 10.5.5 / Works Fine on XP. Since many people on the forum have been having the same problems and, like myself, have been unable to resolve them by the same methods that seem to have fixed the problem for the majority of people (hence the issue topic being marked "answered" because the topic was indeed answered, but only for the OP), I decided to start this thread again.
I have been having the same problems as Roippeli and rogerjth for over a week now, and despite having searched the forums exhaustively, I am unable to fix them. I have tried every suggestion, including all of those made by Klaus 1 (emptying cache, resetting Safari, deleting specified files from Home/Library/Preferences and "/"/Safari, adding DNS numbers, scanning for trojan viruses - of which there were none - creating an OpenDNS account and configuring both my router and my PB to utilize OpenDNS), which seem to have solved the problems for many. However, after a short period of subtle yet marked increases in speed, I am back to the same place that I was before taking these steps. Intermittent connection, slow speeds, the works. I'm now ready to smash the router. Help!same problem here on a macpro. but only since today, i updated to 10.5.5 a week ago or so when it came out and had no problems until today. the moment i started my macpro internet connection was very slow (with safari, firefox & mail), but the airport network itself seems to be fine though (tried by copying files from a network disk).
everything else connected to the same network works fine (iphone, other macs without 10.5.5)
i posted in a german forum too and there are some others having the same problem.
the question is : why today ??? i didn't change anything serious lately.
i'm currently trying to download the combo update again and safari standalone but i get one timeout after the other.
also tried to repair rights, p-ram reset, safari reset - nothing helped.

MacBook Pro and Wi-Fi Slow Internet Connection
Hi There,
I just got Macbook Pro. I am new Mac user and ran into strange problem. when I connect to internet through Wi-Fi the speed is really awful in comparison with my other windows based laptop at the same time.
How could I solve this problem? I mean, is there any specific setting I am supposed to do to overcome my slow internet speed?
Thank youirishi wrote:
I did test my internet speed through site " www.speakeasy.net/speedtest ". There was not any big
difference between my macbook pro and windows computer internet speed. Major difference is about webpage loading time. Could you please let me know what could I do to figure it out?
Your ISP's DNS servers are not communicating with your Mac properly. This is a common problem. Follow the instructions and setup your own DNS servers from OpenDNS: http://www.opendns.com/ -
[SOLVED] Extremely slow internet
Hello.
I'm having a problem with really slow internet on Arch, but it's working really fast and smooth on Windows. This started to happen once i moved my old HDD to a new built computer, so i wouldn't have to reformat etc. (Now i have reformatted and also tried Debian, same thing there and now)
Any ideas?

Cant download LION on slow internet. Starts over after disconnection.
Currently deployed to Africa with USAF. Hard drive crashed on old white macbook. Installed new drive and reinstalled original Snow Leopard. Fully updated all software.
Went to app store to download Lion. I can download approx 1 GB per day on slow internet. Each time my laptop is disconnected from the internet and I reconnect later, Lion starts its download from ZERO.
I "pause" it and it says "780mb downloaded" etc.... I come back the next day and it starts all over again from zero bytes.
Help!
I wouldn,t care so much being stuck with Snow Leopard, except my personal USB drive is encrypted with Lion so I cant access it right now.
-BryanOk, after some more mucking about I have made some progress. By changing MTU to 100 I can get pages to load, albeit slowly. At least now I can post about this from my main box ;-).
I have noticed the following things:
- With MTU 100 pages load, but my adsl broadband is about as slow as an old modem. I get about 1Kbps on ftp downloads. After ~200K the transfer stalls.
- When using aMule i notice that my eth0 monitor (in superkaramba) indicates outward traffic of about 20 Kbps, eventhough aMule itself only indicates 5Kbps being transferred.
- When I ping my router by doing "ping 192.168.0.1" I have about 10% packet loss. This does not happen on my laptop.
So, I'm stuck with the following questions:
- Why does my internet grind to a halt when I use MTU>1000?
- Why do my downloads halt after ~100K?
- Where do I start looking for differences in my LAPTOP setup, which works fine, and my MAIN BOX, which does not?
