Read-only access permissions for new files/folders?

System:
Clean Install on new intel Xserve
10.4.8 Server w/ Open Directory
Windows clients can read/write completely fine...
Clients connecting using AFP (whether Standard or Kerberos authentication) can access files, but when new files/folders are created on the server, they register as full permissions for the user who created them, but not for the rest of the group.
The share(s) in question are set using POSIX from WGM: Full access for owner/group/everyone (changed it to this thinking it would help, but it does not). Of course, no one can make changes to a newly-created/deposited files/folders, which is just plain silly.
I can chmod the permissions recursively from a script (which fixes the problem, of course) on a regular basis so that its not (as much of) an issue, but there is still a 5-minute lag for the script to kick in, since we don't want to bombard the server with chmod requests every minute....which is unnecessary in the first place!
I have plenty of other setups which are identical but have no such issue...
Any reason why POSIX permissions on the share are being ignored from every user account?
Thanks,
k

"That's default posix behaviour no matter what access permissions you set on the sharepoint."
I'm afraid this is dead wrong. What matters most is how you set permissions on the share, not if you've chosen to inherit vs. using POSIX. POSIX is still used in inherit functions, though you can use ACL's to override them. In this case, ACL's are not being used on those shares (though we tried it).
After all, why would Apple (let alone anyone else) even offer the ability to change POSIX permissions on a share if it didn't have any effect? That would be somewhat contradictory in nature.
Like I said before, I have several other installations which are identically setup that have no such issues.
As for Windows, it is also not set to inherit permissions; we're setting those explicitly. And they work fine.
Any other ideas?
Thanks,
k

  • Mac Mini Sever - Public Share - how enable read and write permissions for new remote files

    Hi,
this Sunday a friend ask me to help hum with a problem on is Man Mini Server. He has a small office and uses the mini server to share a public folder to all his employees.
Everyone that creates a file, saves it to the public folder at the mini mac.
That problem is that, who creates the file owns it and remains with read-only permissions to everyone else. The owner has to change the file permission in order to the rest of the employees can work on it.
I do not know mac arquitecture, I only work with windows and linux, but i suspect the principles are the same.
We try to create another folder , and share it, but it happens the same. Have you any ideas on what is wrong?
I suspect it has anything to do with de file Sharing at the mini mac, but it has read and write permissions for everyone.
    Thanks for your help.

signed applet. You aren't going to find any easy way to distribute that policy file to users, and that policy file, if you asked me to put it on my PC, I'd tell you to take a flying leap. That would open any applet to access.

  • Home Directory Permissions on New Files/Folders

Problem: When a user creates a file or folder in the root of their home folder (ie. not in their Documents or other default folder) it is given "read" access to the "others" POSIX permission. So, anyone browsing the "users" folder on the network can view those files or folders. I would like to change this behavior so that when a user creates a file or folder, it is only read/write for the user and nothing for everyone else.

umask is not really the correct thing to do in this case, as this resets the permissions for every file the user creates. Afaik, the umask setting has to be installed on every machine via the launchd-user.conf file (to contain simply: umask 002) (or whatever is appropriate for your facility), as umask is a property of the process, not the connection.
What might work better for your problem is make the homedirs world and group non-readable. That way the user creates files within their homedirs and anywhere below, but everyone else can't read them regardless of the files' permissions because the directory itself is unreadable.

  • Set default permissions for new files?

We have a small LAN where different users often need to open and resave each others' files. No server, just a bunch of client computers on ethernet sharing an internet router.
Each time a user creates a file, that file's permissions default to read only for anyone but that user. How can I set up the default permissions so that any newly-created files default to Read & Write for "groups" and "others".
I anticipate I will have to make this change for each user on each workstation.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

If you want users to share files then have them place the file in the /Users/Shared/ folder. Files placed in that folder can be accessed by any user.

  • How do I give myself read/write access/permissions for my external drive?

Im a brand new Mac user, so please stay with me.
I have an external drive and I can't delete, modify, ANYTHING on it. When I go to "Get Info" it says "You can only read" under sharing & permissions. How do I change this?

When you get info on the external drive, at the very bottom is a box you can check
    "Ignore ownership on this volume"...
If you check that, then see if you can delete and move things around.
If that doesn't work then try clicking on the + sign and adding you as an admin so you can Read & Write.

  • Access permissions for eps file on Mac

I am asking this question on behalf of a friend...
"When I create an  eps file on a mac, it only gives access to the person who created it and  it gives the everyone group no access. Is there a way to default this  so that everyone has read rights to it?
I have other machines that do  not have to change the rights and automatically give read rights to the  everyone group by default but I am unsure where or what to change to  make this happen for this one user."

Are you logging into a user with Administrative Privileges?
If it is a user account that does not have adminstrative or standard privileges then this might be a problem.
For instance a guest with sharing only.
You set the privileges in the new accounts
You may also have to repair the permissions using the disk utility app in the Applications>Utilities
Or you might have to manually set the sharing to read write for a particular directory which is done with the Get Info dialog.

  • How to create a read only access for database

I am developer but willing to lear some of the dba tasks. I would like to know the steps that i need to take to creat a read only access database that is going to be used for the report development.
I really appreciate if you tell me all the steps I need to create that. I have a full right to do this in the develpment database. thanks

thank you for your reply but it does not tell me how i can set up a read only access acccount for the user. Do i need to create a role and assign the role to the users?

  • Read only access to J2EE related tools

    Hello,
I would like to help our auditors access everything they need to check in the Java systems, but I am not ready to give them ADMIN accounts. That`s why I need some kind of read only access for them.
So I would like to ask you if there is a SAP Note about the read only access roles for J2EE/ Java AS?
I am afraid there is no such note available, so can anybody share any experience with granting read only access to the Java system? I know how to grant access to the whole NWA, but what about the rest?
    Examples:
    - is there a way how to grant read only access only to the UME?
    - is there a role for read only access to the portal PCD?
    - is there something similar for KM access?
Or has anybody ever tried to split the admin roles into smaller pieces? Is there a description/ document how to do such thing?
Thank you for your time and effort,
    cheers Otto

    Hi,
thanks for trying, but I can use help.sap.com and was on that page before.
Maybe if there were any examples there or better: if the whole thing would be more granular (I see no point in using roles starting with SUPER, containing ADMIN or ending with ALL). I am looking for roles for surgery or for auditing. I don`t want to give anybody these super/admin/all roles just like that.
If you can suggest how to use that page, that would be cool. Otherwise I see no use.
By the way: another question of mine about surgery: How to restrict access to download/ upload UME configuration file
I would like to know how to controla access to this specific feature, nothing else.
Thanks for the time and effort,
    cheers Otto

    Hi
    1. First create a user like readonlyweblogic using some password in Weblogic Console. In Weblogic Console itself, select this new user and go to his Group Memberships and add a Group named Monitors. This means this user has Monitor role for Weblogic Console. Monitor is a Read Only access role to the weblogic console.
    2. NOW, with full admin privileges user, login into EM Console. Select soa_infra, right click mouse -> Security -> Application Roles. On right side, click green arrow and see list of Roles shown. Select the role named SOAMonitors, click on this. And add a User to this that is created above like "readonlyweblogic".
    3. Close all the browsers. Open a new browser and test weblogic console and em console with this new user.
I have this setup like this in many envs and they all work fine. They are read only access users for admin console and em console.
    Thanks

  • Is there a way around the build-in FTP as read-only access

"With read-only access, you can copy files from the server, but to copy files to the server you may need another FTP app. Choose Apple menu > App Store to find FTP apps available for OS X."
Is there a way to get around this? Can i get the build-in FTP to allow for uploading files as well? Terminal “hack” or something?

    >> Can i get the build-in FTP to allow for uploading files as well? Terminal “hack” or something?
Not with a Terminal hack, no; and it's nothing to do with being a guest user.
Consider EtreNet which costs $10, but appears to do what you want.

  • Read-only access when saving metadata to file from Adobe Lightroom on a MAC OS to Windows shared drive

We have a group of 5 people editing and indexing photos to a shared drive on a windows server, everyone has its own catalog and working on different folders to avoid any locking conflicts.
The windows computers don't have any problems but the Mac's don't write the updated metadata to all files because they get the message "Photos have read-only access".
    The environment is the following:
    2x Macs workstations running:
    - Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.7.1
    - iMAC with MAC OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
    3x Windows Workstations:
    - Windows 7
    - Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.7.1
    Server:
    - Shared drive on a Windows Server 2012 Standard
I have searched the internet, no one has this problem with this exact setup but I have tried all the solutions I found, namely:
    1. Connect to the network drive with cifs:// protocol
    2. Change the settings of the nsmb.conf for 'smb1_only' protocol
    3. Mount the drive manually by command line
    Nothing worked, any ideas?

Did you ever find a solution to this problem?  I have the same issue and wonder if Lightroom 6 will resolve it.  I  tried AFP, SMB2, SMB3 and they all failed to save metadata randomly. When I use NFS from OS X then it works fine but it's a little slower than SMB and it's not as native as the mount via AFP or SMB, so it's harder to maintain.     My server is a FreeNAS 9.2 (FreeBSD) which is running Samba, Netatalk and native NFS.

  • Read only access for objects in application designer

I want to apply read only access to all the objects in application designer. I would like to know how we can do this.
    Jayaprakash Tedla

    Jayaprakash,
    On 8.48 :
    1. Create a PERMISSION LIST
1.1 leave empty the navigator homepage
1.2 leave unchecked Can Start Application Server? and Allow Password to be Emailed?
1.3 On Pages tab, leave it empty
1.4 On PeopleTools tab, check Application Designer Access, then click on Definition Permissions, Tools Permissions Miscellaneous and Permissions, and put there the rights as well as you want. You can put Read Only on all component in one shot by clicking on the button, or one by one by choosing in the listbox for each type of components.
1.5 leave all other tab blank
    2. Create a ROLE, and add the permission list created on step 1.
    3. Create the user, and give the role created on step 2.
    4. Open Application Designer, connect there with the new user, and enjoy on read-only access.
    Hope this help,
    Nicolas.

  • How do I allow users to create folders in a shared folder where we all then have read/write access to those new folders?

I have three users who need to access a particular folder on one of our other Macs. The folder resides on the desktop of that particular Mac and it is set as "shared" with all of our accounts set to access the folder. When a user creates a new subfolder in that shared folder, the permissions are instantly set to allow the creator read/write access but the other users are only allowed read-only access. Is there a way to set the permissions so that any new folder created in that shared folder automatically gives read/write access to all accounts who are authorized access to that shared folder?

You should be able to take the permissions you have set and "apply to enclosed items." I am trying to attach a picture of what this looks like so my apologies if it does not work.
Highlight your folder you want and go to File>Get Info or command+I and at the bottom where it has Sharing and Permissions, click the lock button to authenticate. Click the gear and click "apply to enclosed items". See if that works.

  • How to configure Mailbox Read-Only access for Mailbox's owner on Exchange Server 2010?

I have to configure the Exchange Server 2010's mailbox to only grant Read-Only Access on the mailbox's owners.  So they can only allowed to read their messages and cannot modify or remove them.  Are there any references or methods to do?

    Hi,alexchy8
We can make use of 2 PowerShell commands to achieve this goal.
    Add-MailboxPermission and Add-MailboxFolderPermission.
Execute the Add-MailboxPermission command to delegate the read permission at mailbox level.
Execute the Add-MailboxFolderPermission command to delegate the required permissions on specific folders inside the mailbox.

  • How enable read only access for ACS server itself

    Hi,
We would like to know whether its possible to create a read only access to the ACS server. Currenlty ACS server has a generic login with full admin rights.
We need to create a login to couple of users to log into ACS to check the "Report and Activity" tab. Access to all other tabs should be disabled.
We are using ACS4.0 verison. Please let me know whether its possible.
    Thanks
