Read tif, save as jpg, colours are wrong

I am using jdk 1.5.0_04 on Solaris 9, and for reading tifs I have tried both jai_imageio_1_0_01 and jai_imageio_1_1-alpha.
If I read in a tif, and save as a jpg, as follows:
BufferedImage img = ImageIO.read(new File("xxx.tif"));
ImageIO.write(img, "jpg", new File("xxx.jpg"));
the colours in the saved jpg are wrong.
Light is dark, orange changes to blue, etc.
Can anyone explain why and how to fix it?
TIA

After applying the cmyk-tiff-32bit to rgb conversion
described in http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=20&threadID=378644
it looks ok.

  • New computer system, printed colours are wrong, please advise.

I recently bought a new computer system inc Dell U2711 monitor and purchased LR4 and CS6. All was well, or so I thought, until I got some prints done. The prints from my old system (with which I only used elements 10) look fine. Those from my new system look awful, the colours are just wrong. My workflow is RAW image opened in LR then finished off in CS6 before saving as JPEG. The saved images look alright but when I either click view/ proof colors or if I use an image as a desktop screensaver, it gives the same washed out appearance with wrong colours. I'm at the limit of my technical knowledge here, does anyone have any ideas please?

Thanks for that link, I will read that. I've been going through the settings on LR and CS and I think I begin to understand. I've been looking in LR preferences and that gives three options for color space: There is Prophoto RGB (the default which LR recommends as it says the other two don't give the full colour range available in LR) then there is sRGB and lastly Adobe RGB (1998). There is no such option that I can find in CS6 preferences but, when I export a TIFF file from LR4 into CS6 and then save it from CS6 it shows the color as ICC profile Adobe RGB (1998). I also notice that in this setting using the view/ proof in CS6 the colours are slightly askew (they were way off when I had the LR preference set to ProphotoRGB). If however I set the LR preference to sRGB and then export to CS6, using the view/proof the colours stay the same so I'm still a bit confused. Maybe I'm just thick, it's a lot to take in.
I've processed a RAW image in the recommended ProphotoRGB, exported it to CS6 then before saving gone into edit/ convert to profile/ sRGB: the colours have stayed the same and using the view/ proof or save as desktop background = no change and everything looks good. So, is this the way forward and should that format work when printed? (I've only got a crappy basic two ink printer which I wouldn't trust to print anything other than text). Also, is it possible to get CS6 to save as sRGB by default or do I have to go through this routine for every image I want to save and print?

  • I have to save as CMYK for print, but the colours are out of whack..

    hey all,
I am designing something for a CD cover that is going to be printed at a print shop, They say they want their images in CMYK and prefer it in a PDF or highest quality JPEG....
So I have been working in CMYK, everything looks fine in photoshop, but when I save out to a JPG the whole thing gets dark and colours get horribly over saturated.
here you can see the image on the left is what happens when I save out directly from my CMYK file in photoshop. there is a big loss in detail in the darker areas and colours are over saturated. the image on the right is what I get if I convert to mode>RGB and then save the JPG. .. . .this is what I want it to look like....
my problem is the print shop requests the image in CMYK, but I want them to print like it looks in the RGB version
any help would be greatfully appreciated! Thankyou!
also here are the actual .jpegs as saved from photoshop
    the CMYK version:
    and the RGB version:
edit: I don't know too much about colour profiles, and the print shop hasn't provided one on their site, so I picked the default one - Working CMYK, U.S WebCoated (SWOP v2)
edit: these are the file formats the printers say they take on their site:
PDF - 300 dpi - (preferred), Tiff, Highest resolution JPG, EPS
I don't really have any experience with the other formats but I presume I would get the same colour results

    Thanks all for the replies.
Just to be clear the file is already in CMYK (U.S web coated SWOPv2), I understand now its probably smarter to work in RGB and then convert at the end but hadn't done so in this case.
If I change image mode to RGB (or vice versa) i notice a tiny shift in the colours on my monitor but nothing as dramatic as what im seeing in those CMYK Jpeg/TIFF's.
    John Danek -
there are probably more than 20 layers in there, my colour settings should all be default because ive never even looked in there before, but here is a screenshot of the dialogue box
and the bit depth is 8-bits per channel
If I save it out as a CMYK .pdf then it looks fine, presumably because im opening it in Adobe acrobat reader so it can see the embedded profile. So I think this is the problem after all, thanks Chris Cox and gator soup for clearing that up!
I have emailed the printers and asked if they can read my embedded profiles correctly with their software (presumably they can) and asked for them to recommend an ICC colour profile but have yet to hear back from them.

  • Open a TIF file then save in JPG

    Started to use PhotoShop CS4.
I use Canon DPP for preprocess then bridge to PhotoShop in TIF format.  I occasionaly want to
save in JPG format rather than TIF to give the file to my friend.  However, there is no option to
save in JPG in "File/Save in other name/" function.
Could a guru help me how to do this.
If a file was in jpg when opened, it can be saved in jpg, though.

    Thanks, but,,,,
There is the SaveAs function.  (I wrote "Save in other name" which is a
    translation in Japanese version PS)
However, there is no JPG format listed.  All available are:
      PhotoShop
      Cineon
      Dicom
      FXG
      IFF
      PhotoShop PDF
      PNG
      Portable Bit Map
      TIFF
      PSG
      RAW
    No JPG there.

  • Acrobat 5 - Placing PDF into inDesign and Output to Colour Separations are Wrong

Acrobat 5 - Placing PDF into inDesign and Output to Colour Separations are Wrong
I have a 2 Page PDF file from my client which I have to have setup 2UP on 450x320 for Metal Plates for the Press.
I setup my page size in inDesign and Placed each page from the PDF file into the inDesign Document.
Because I need 4 Metal plates (CMYK) I had to check the Colour Seperations for the file by outputting it to a Postscript file with CMYK SEPS and then using Adobe Distiller to turn it into a PDF file for me to view the Seperations.
As I've shown in the screen shot below. The CYAN plate has boxes all around the images in the PDF file which will come out on a Metal Plate.
Compared to the Colour version of the Client's PDF they supplied me, there is no boxes around the images.
I know this is a error with dropping a PDF file into inDesign, outputting to a PS file and then Distilling it to the SEPS. I've had the same problem when I've opened a PDF file that has been distilled in Illustrator and the Artwork is sliced into pieces and uneditable.
Has anyone else found this problem and if so is there a workaround?
I'm using Adobe inDesign CS and Adobe Acrobat Professional Version 5.

Im facing a similar kind of problem. I want to store and retrieve Office files, PDF and Jpegs into/from the database to view them on web in disconnected mode. Please reply as I cant find any help/documentation regarding saving BLOB data into files. I was able to store file data into BLOB, using DBMS_LOB package.

  • HELP!!! My settings are wrong need to send for printing

    Hi
I am doing brochure's for my company. I am from South Africa.
I use Illustrator for the brochure, Layout and Text.
Last month the printer had problems with printing the brochure. I discovered my settings are wrong.
    This was the settings:
    Colour Setting
    Settings:     Custom
    WorkingSpace
    RGB:               sRGB IEC61966-2. 1
CMYK:            U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2
    Color Management Policies:
    RGB:               Off
CMYK:             Preserve Numbers (Ignore Linked Profiles)
Profile Mismatches:  Ask When Opening (ticked)
Ask When Pasting ( Not Ticked)
Missing profiles:       Ask When Opening (Ticked)
Then I did research On Adobe Community Help and changed it to the below but its wrong too
    Colour Setting
    Settings:     Europe Prepress 3
    WorkingSpace
    RGB:               Adobe RGB (1998)
    CMYK:            Coated FOGRA39 (ISO 12647-2:2004)
    Color Management Policies:
    RGB:               Preserve Embedded Profiles
CMYK:             Preserve Numbers (Ignore Linked Profiles)
Profile Mismatches:  Ask When Opening (ticked)
                                   Ask When Pasting (Ticked)
Missing profiles:       Ask When Opening (Ticked)
Can someone help me to set it right according to RSA printers settings, something like a default setting.
Last Month the printer said the below:
    - fonts are not embedded.
    - black is not on overprint and is 4 colour black
I never had this problem before, so I have no idea what went wrong all of a sudden.
Now when I open my prevoius work on Illustrator or Photoshop, a small window pops up saying work is not according to this settings, etc.
    Please help. Im desperate.
I need to start my new brochure tomorrow
    Thank you in advance
    Kajal

You should get a preflight checklist from your print vendor.  Here's what I have set in Illustrator...
You should also send the print vendor a press-ready PDF.  Not all of the file problems are limted to color settings.  For instance...
"Last Month the printer said the below:
    - fonts are not embedded. "
When you Save As > EPS, select "Include Fonts" in the selection process; and when Save As > Press Quality PDF, select "Embed Fonts" in the Settings dialogs.
"- black is not on overprint and is 4 colour black"
In Preferences > Appearance of Black, select "Accurate Black" in both screen and print; in your file, set appropriate Black elements to Overprint in the Color "Attributes" dialog.
Whenever you are not sure what the printer is talking about, ask them to explain what they mean and help you fix the problems.  If they refuse, ask them where you can get help.  Most good shops will be willing to help you.

  • TIFF and JPG Files Are Black?

I have posted this question twice before but didn’t get it resolved. I really need to get some help on this.
I have some old projects that I use in the classroom while I am teaching. They are TIFF images and often have sound clips with them. I create slideshows and then convert them to tracks. This has been working really well.
Suddenly, all TIFF or JPG files are black. Old files in old projects and new ones I import are all black. PICT files are okay and I am doing new projects using them, but I cannot go back and edit old projects because all of the TIFFs are black.
Can anyone figure out why this happened and how to resolve the issue?
    Thanks!
    Mike

I have seen this when I save over a graphic while the fcp project is still open. The tifs come back inside fcp when I restart the app then trash my render files. If these are really old fcp projects try disconnecting your media (the tif and jpeg files), trashing your render files then reconnecting your media using the locate tool.

  • Can't save as jpg

Got a CD of images from a photographer. All RGB tiffs (with 2 f's). I resaved as tif and reduced image size to 260 dpi. Client wants me to reduce file size more by resaving as jpgs. I opened a couple of images and not one image gives me the option to save as jpg. Converting to CMYK gives only about 4 options when I try to do a save as. None of them jpgs. Anyone know what gives? How do I save as JPG? Using CS4 PS.
Here are the only options I have to save files as:

You've probably got 16 bit images, change them to 8 bit (image > mode)

I am getting messages that I can't download and read .pdf files since I have the wrong Adobe reader. I know about their security disasters of course, but I downloaded the latest version of Adobe Reader from the Adobe web site and I have other ,pdf file readers as well, and for some reason they won't work either. I have 5 computers running top end processors and RAM. By this I mean I have one, this one which I am using that has an AMD Phenom Black 3.2 Quad-core with 8 GBs of Corsair top DDR2 RAM, my other two AMD have either an Athlon II triple core with 4 GBs of DDR2 Corsair RAM, one with the Phenom X4 965 3.4 GHz Quad-core with 8 GBs of their best DDR2 RAM, and two Intels with the i7 920 Processors using the triple channel 1366 socket processors and one with 8 GBs of low latency DDR3 RAM and the other with 4 GBs of the same RAM. I am getting the message on this one, which has a fresh install of XP Pro X64 operating system, as do the other 4 as well. I have run Avast Business Pro Anti-virus on this one, which I am getting the message on with a single result which I deleted, and also both Spybot Search and Destroy, which came back clean as well as Malwarebytes Antimalware, which got a lot of tracing cookies now removed, and SuperAntiSpware which also found a few cookies also now deleted. Can you tell me what I need to do to get these files to show as .pdf files rather than as a clean blank page. One other issue is that I wish to know how to turn off my downloads so they are saved and Mozilla will give me the option of returning them instead of me losing them all together as it does now. Thanks for your assistance. If there is another Adobe reader I should download and install, could you provide me with the link to it? I appreciate your assistance here
== When I download and try to read a .pdf file and when I am asked to turn off all Firefox files and if I do, I lose them since I need to know how to save them without rebooting my computer.

Brilliant! Problem solved! Thanks so much.

  • The obsolete 'copy' in save as .jpg

I supported Pshop for Adobe when 4 came out (1997) and STILL I have to delete the automatic insertion of 'copy' into the filename when I save a layered .psd as a .jpg. There is NO reason for this piece of code anymore. As I understand it, there was some weird concern that, since layers were new, people wouldn't realize that saving as a .jpg wouldn't preserve them and they would also have to save the .psd as well - which you are warned about anyway on close.
Can ANYONE tell me why this piece of code is still there? Can ANYONE concoct a reason I have had to delete 'copy' on save as .jpg for FIFTEEN years now? Just for my sanity - make something up that sounds good. PLEASE!

    Geolaf wrote:
Sorry - been using shift+control S forever - doesn't offer the option to NOT save as a cop
I really don't think my workflow is at all unusual. I would just like it to save the jpeg as a flattened jpg (since all jpgs ARE flat) and leave the psd open - just as it does - and prompt me to save the psd as it does. But I would be happy if there WAS a keycombo that made that happen.
Nevertheless - I guess this is the definitive 'thinking' behind the code - even though it doesn't offer a choice (which is where I think the flaw is - since the only thing that happens to the workflow is that I have to remove - or leave - copy in the filename.)
It's not as if it's preventing anything. They could have put in a dialog that says: "Saving in another format with layers will leave the author file in psd format and save a copy so that you can maintain your layers." with a checkbox that says: Don't show me this again.
May be good ideas, but I can assure you that they are not going to make any code changes for CS3 and your problem doesn't exist in the latest versions.

  • Save for Web or Save As Jpg for website

Saving photographs for my website. Files are big, 1140 pxls high (width varies with cropping/landscape or portrait). Because of the large size of the photographs on screen, I need a good quality file - minimal artifacting.
Is Save for Web (Tiff or PSD to Jpg) going to give me a smaller file size than Save As Jpg at a similar quality (compression) setting?
Website is Flash, so I'll strip the metadata, but in situations where I want to keep metadata embedded (ie on blogs), is Save for Web still going to give me a smaller but still high quality file?
Can anyone explain what Save for Web does differently to Save As - when dealing with Tiff/PSD to JPG?
    Thanks!
    Mac, CS5.5

I'm not discounting the ability to inspect images in greater detail. I'm just noting that it is inefficient as a designer/publisher to push more data than what the average user needs. That is not how the internet works now or in the future.  You did not download the entire Adobe forums for offline reading. You open only the forum pages/discussions that interest you. We invite data to us. We don't have it slammed at us. I would not doubt that your pinch zoom example could be addressed with a javascript event to load a higher resolution graphic between the moment the image is first touched and the point when you zoom.
There is no such thing as unlimited storage and bandwidth. Check your hosting plan for the fine print. BizLand/Endurance hosting will most certainly yank your site offline if it starts to take an unreasonable share of system resources from other sites shared on the same server.  I've seen this happen often, especially with Endurance hosting. I'll never use them again.
You may be able to get away with bloated graphics on your own site, which ranks 2,310,866 on alexa.com. But a site like adobe.com (ranking at 65) is going to be much more concerned about image sizes. If you host an image at 300kb that could have been 100kb, you waste 2MB among the handful of people that visit your site in a day. At Adobe's scale, they will have wasted multiple gigabytes of bandwidth.
Bear in mind that you are limited to a certain number of concurrent HTTP connections. This has not changed with the advent of faster networks. While a connection is held up to load a larger graphic, another HTML, JS, CSS or image file has to wait in line to load. Peek into the source graphics used in this page. Jive makes heavy use of css sprites to lessen the dependence on multiple connections.
You will never get away from designing for economy. That is why we use JPG images instead of BMP images.

  • Acrobat 9 Pro, colours are messed up in a PDF

When opening up some PDF's the colours are all wrong. This only seems to happen with certain ones though. HOWEVER, if I open the exact same PDF in Acrobat Reader it displays correctly.
    See images below:
    Incorrect: http://mark.christopher.casey.googlepages.com/weird.png
    Correct: http://mark.christopher.casey.googlepages.com/corrected.png
To get the correct colours for all the objects I selected everything (Ctrl+A) then went to the menu: Tools, Advanced Editing, Touchup object tool. Selected the "color" tab and converted it to Adobe RGB (although any colour space corrects this issue, same with rendering intent)
However, here's where it gets interesting. If I tick the "embed profile" tick box all of a sudden the colours are suddenly all over the place again as shown in the incorrect image.
Acrobat 9 Professional was used and the operating system was Windows Vista Business x64.

i have read at least 4 articles and watch 3 videos that do almost the same process i have explained.  the only difference is that they used Word to create their PDF doc.  they had no issues.
so i am wondering if there is something wrong with the Excel PDF process.  i have tried this one 2 different MacBooks with same result.
what does the cell have to have in order for Acrobat to detect it as a form field?
I have a spreadsheet that has over 300 fields that should have been detected.  so yes, i could create them manually, but i am hoping to get this Acrobat to detect them.
I tried the process you did "File=>Create Form".  i got same message.
i built a separate little test process to describe the issue.  see image that is attached.
it is very simple, yet no fields were detected.

  • Adobe Reader X save location issue

Hi All, i would like to seek expert helps on Adobe Reader save location issues. After we upgrade from Adobe Reader 9 to Adobe Reader X.
There are changes on how save location works in Adobe Reader X
If save PDF via Internet Explorer – the save location will according to last save location, HOWEVER
If save PDF via Adobe Reader X – the save location will set according to location the file is being open
Let me show you what i mean over the pictures
I open a reader_X_help.pdf using Adobe Reader X and then save the file using Ctrl+Shift+S at: C:\Users\xxxx\Documents\My last location save
    refer my last save location.jpg
Now i want to save another new file back to C:\Users\xxxx\Documents\My last location save, I open the file Adobe file2.pdf located at desktop and when i do Ctrl+Shift+S, the location point to my desktop and not C:\Users\xxxx\Documents\My last location save
refer my last save location change to desktop.jpg
I have tested this features in Adobe Reader 9 and it's different whereby it's will point according to my last location save.
There is no issue with computer as i have 3 machine running different enviroment, Windows XP SP3, Windows 7 Enterprise, and all using same version of Adobe Reader X version 10.0.1.
    So my questions & concern:
Is there any way to change the save location features same as Adobe Reader 9?
If YES, how to do it? By Computer Changes or Adobe Reader X packages modification using Adobe Customization tools?
If NO, Where can i find this source of documentation stated about this new changes so i can publish this information in HP website as new design changes to avoid complaint or negative feedback.
Looking forward for expert reply as soon.
Thank you very much and Have a great day.
    Best Regards

    Solved it!
    1-go to "edit", select Preferences.
2-select from the left pane: Security (enhanced)
3-click on "add folder path" button just below the big white box
4-pick a folder of your choice and click "ok". (your selected folder path will appear in that white box above the "add folder path" button in step 3)
5-if you want to add additional folders, just repeat steps 3 & 4
6-once you are done, click "ok" on the preferences screen and click "ok" again to accept the changes.
Yes, it seems illogical, but it worked.
I tested by closing the Reader (X), then surfed the web and did what Neher5 was explaining he/she wanted to do just after opening a pdf from a website and lo-and-behold,  it worked!. No more "save to temp folder" issues.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to save a JPG in 256 colors?

    I'm using Photoshop CS2.
    1. How to save a JPG in 256 colors?
    2. Is there a way to see an image properties?
-- I want to know if that image is in 256 color or not...

Mary Jo, since you are a newcomer, you may not yet understand that in any given Adobe forum, there are a whole bunch of conversations going on at the same time. Each one of these is about a certain "topic", described in the title and opening post. The discussion sometimes stays right on point, and sometimes veers off a bit, and there are often quick side-issues branching off from the main topic, but still related. Within limits, people here try to keep the discussion on a single general topic. For example, in this topic, the initial issue is whether there is a way, in Photoshop, to limit the number of colors in a JPEG image to 256; there were discussions about whether this could be done or not, and alternative programs that may be able to accomplish this, and a comparison of the file sizes for 256 bit images in different file types.
Your question, however, is not a logical outgrowth of the discussion. It's a perfectly good question, but it deserves its own new discussion topic. It's like a bunch of people have been sitting around a table discussing the merits of Canon vs. Nikon SLRs, and someone sits down at the table and, instead of joining the conversation, asks a completely unrelated question about point-and-shoot cameras, or camcorders.
It's off-topic here, and you should start a new topic. Make the title descriptive, such as "Why does a 8 megapixel image result in a 3 megabyte file on my computer?" (assuming that's what you want to ask -- just "M" doesn't tell me whether you are talking about MP or MB). In the initial post, provide a more detailed description of what you want to know. Tell us what camera and Photoshop version you are using, and how you encountered the issue. People will see that a new topic raises an issue they know something about and you will get a response -- probably a good answer, if you keep in the conversation.
[Edit: Trez hit "post" before I did. Trez-- I think she is using Photoshop, not Elements; she did say CS2.]
