Reader opens pdf links in acrobat!

I'm doing this in Windows 7, with reader 9.2.0.
I'm writing a program that creates a html file, so that I can code my links in HTML, which is a language I am familiar with. All my links are directly to PDF files which are on the hard drive in a subfolder where the html file is located...
So, I create a file named FILE.HTML
Subfolder is named SUBFOLDER
In the subfolder is a file named FILE.PDF
Okay, so in my FILE.HTML I write a basic hyperlink to FILE.PDF.
if I open the file in any browser, and click the link, it now opens the PDF file as expected in READER, because reader is my default program for opening PDFs. Great.
But then, I convert the HTML file into a PDF. Great.
Now, I open the pdf version of my html file. It opens it in reader by default, so far so good.
But now, in reader, I hover my mouse over the link and it shows me the link is to FILE:\\\c:\blah\FILE.PDF... Exactly the same as what I see when I hover my mouse over the link in any webbrowser when I have the html file open.
But when I click the link in reader, a stupid box pops up saying something along the line of "warning, you are attempting to connect to ... PDF!! please click allow to make this stupid box go away." and I click allow. I wish it didn't show that message on local pdf files, it's just dumb. Anyway, I click allow.
And it sits there for like 10 seconds, and then finally it opens it... but IT OPENS IT IN ACROBAT! WHY!!
I need it to open my links in reader.
Please do NOT ask me to make my links using some other method. I need to use this exact method of first having the links in html format, and then exporting it from html to pdf, and the links need to open in READER... which is the default program on my computer for pdfs. Obviously reader is intentionally ignoring my system's settings and choosing to open pdfs in acrobat. I need it to not do this, because I will be giveing these pdfs with links to clients of mine and they will be really annoyed if every time they click a link it opens in acrobat, because acrobat takes way longer to open than reader and these people will be in a hurry. Help!!
Aaron

I do not know why it behaves that way; all I know is that having Adobe Reader and Acrobat on the same system is not supported for versions before 10.  Only Adobe Reader X and Acrobat X function well together.

  • Bug:Unable to open a pdf link using Acrobat Reader 9.3.4

When I open pdf links in IE I get the error message
"Your current security setting does not allow this file to be downloaded."
I have added the site to trusted sites without luck.
I also followed the link http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/328/328233.html
I have been able to access these links with 8.x versions. of Adobe Reader.
For example when I try to get the IRS 1040 form
    http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040.pdf?portlet=3
I get the error message mentioned above.
Now more  This is running on a Windows 2003 32 bit server.  I use Citrix XenApp to publish IE.  I have used 7 users to test. Two have an issue.  Four and the admin do not.  There is nothing in the Event log regarding this issue.  I am not sure how to enable debugging within the reader.
I would appreciate any assistance to troubleshoot this issue.
    Thank you.

As you discovered, Adobe Acrobat/Pro/Reader v.9 will crash for all managed user accounts that store their home folders on the server because it has "difficulty" reading and writing to a folder across a network, which is why it crashes shortly after it launches.
HOWEVER, there is hope. All you need to do is tell Adobe to write all of its files to the local drive rather than the home folder on the sharepoint, as follows:
While logged into your network-user account:
    1. Go to the "Shared" folder on the local drive. (Local HD > Users > Shared)
    2. Create a new folder named "9.0_x86" if you have an Intel or "9.0_ppc" if you have a PPC (without the quotes for either case). You will have to authenticate as an Administrator.
    3. Go to the Acrobat folder within the user's Application Support and delete the folder in it.
    (Home > Library > Application Support > Adobe > Acrobat > 9.0_x86 or 9.0_ppc)
    4. Open/launch the Terminal application found within the Utilities folder on you Mac.
    (Applications > Utilities > Terminal.app)
    5. In Terminal, enter the 1st command for Intel or the 2nd for PPC:
    ln -s /Users/Shared/9.0_x86 ~/Library/Application \Support/Adobe/Acrobat/9.0_x86
    OR
    ln -s /Users/Shared/9.0_ppc ~/Library/Application \Support/Adobe/Acrobat/9.0_ppc
Adobe Acrobat 9 should now work properly. You may get the "quit unexpectedly" error message the first time you quit the application, but should only happen the one time.
On a side note, the print spool is slow when printing very large multi-paged PDFs.
This is a fix I found in 2009 by Dennis, can't remember where though.

  • Open PDF file in Acrobat reader rather than SAP Document viewer...

    Hello everyone,
Whenever we attach a pdf file using Services for objects-->Store Business documents, an attachment list list is created and the file is archived in the repository.
If we double click on it, the pdf is opened in SAP Document viewer and not in Acrobat Reader unlike word document....
Can anyone tell me what configuration changes should be made and where so as to open pdf file in Acrobat?
Similarily what changes should be made so as to open Email files in Outlook?

Which version of the Acrobat Reader do you use?
According to my experience with our desktop this might be a feature of ACROBAD READER X.
    Kind regards

  • Open PDF file on Acrobat Reader X on Document library file click

    Hi,
    Can you anyone tell me?
How to open PDF file in reader from document library on pdf file click?

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you want to open PDF file on Acrobat Reader X in SharePoint Document Library.
We need to provide the OpenControl key in the DocIcon.xml and clients should use Acrobat X or Reader X to leverage.
Here is a blog for your reference:

  • Quicktime opening PDF link files on the web

Since updating to Tiger when I click on a PDF file on the web Quicktime opens it but only shows the first page and I see no method to go to next page. I have overcome this by right clicking on a link and downloading file and right clicking to open with Adobe. I have checked quicktime preferences and clicked off anything with PDF file type. This happens with either Camino or Firefox.
How do I eliminate quicktime from opening PDF links?
How do I open files automatically with either Adobe or Preview?
    Thanks

    1. Select a PDF file in the Finder.
    2. Select File->Get Info (or Command-I keystroke)
    3. Expand Open with section of the Get Info window.
    4. Select the application you would like the PDF to
    open with.
    5. Click the Change All button have all PDF open with
    your selected application.
    Good luck,

    TK Thanks for your response.
I had already done what you are suggesting and it resulted in any PDF documents in my computer opening directly with Adobe. However with Camino or firefox clicking on a PDF web link Quicktime opens it with the same results mentioned. I have Acrobat reader 7.0.5 and Adobe PDF viewer plugin 7.0.9
I don't know why the plugin isn't activated.

  • FF 6.0 doesn't open pdf-links, after clicking on "open pdf" error message says file not supported or damaged. IE opens file all right. Please advice.

Firefox 6.0 doesn't open pdf-links after clicking on "open pdf". I frequently need to do literature searches and I need to view pdf files in the browser. After clicking on the pdf - link of a file the main options are to open or download the pdf. Every time I try to open a pdf-file a blank page and an error message appears saying the file would not be supported or is damaged. IE, however, opens the file all right. I tried various changes in the security and cookie settings without success. Please advice.

    Hi SGckc,
This document is almost certainly a dynamic XFA form. Unfortunately, our mobile Reader does not support displaying or filling such forms. The application that produces this form embeds this message into the document so that non-supportive viewers (like ours) will display this "error" page when the document opens. I do realize that this is confusing and I would like to add some additional detection to our Reader for this case. However, we've avoided doing this for fear of confusing users even further. Your feedback helps though. Hopefully we'll find a way to detect this case and present a better message to the user like: This form is not supported by the mobile version of the Adobe Reader. Please open and fill it on the non-mobile version of the Adobe Reader for Windows, Linux or Mac OSX.
    Thank you for contacting us!

  • Can't open PDF links in Safari

Hi, only since a couple of days ago, I couldn't open PDF links in Safari. The page loads but nothing appears in the new window or tab.
    Thanks,
    Aaron

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Did you recently install Adobe Reader or is it installed in your system? If not, Safari's preference folder may be corrupt. To create a new preference file go to the Finder, drag to the desktop the com.apple.safari.plist folder found in your User Account>Library>Preferences folder.
Restart Safari and try a PDF. It ought to open within the browser. Also, you'll need to reset your custom preferences, plus any custom settings in the Edit (spelling) or View (status bar, bookmarks bar, custom icons etc.) menus.
If Adobe Reader is installed, and you want the PDF to open in the Safari Browser, go to your Internet Plug-ins Folder (Main or User Library in your Finder) and remove the Adobe plug-in.

  • Problems with editing/opening PDF's in Acrobat X

We have 2 situations going on with Acrobat X:
    1.  We are scanning drawings on a Xerox Wide Format scanner to PDF's.  When I open them in Acrobat 8 Pro I can rotate and edit them.  When my boss opens them in Acrobat X the same file opens as a PDF/A and he can't do anything with them.  Any thoughts on how we can change this?
    2.  When my boss get's PDF attachements in his email he is not able to open them, he has to email them to me so I can open them in Acrobat 8 Pro.
We were considering upgrading the whole office to the latest version of Acrobat but until we can get these 2 basic items solved it won't happen.  Any help is appriciated.
We are running Macs with OS X verison 10.8.4
    Thanks
    Christinia

    Hi Christina,
For first issue, you are scanning your PDFs as PDF/A i.e why Acrobat 10 cannot edit them. (Acrobat 8 could edit PDF/A, this feature not to enable editing on PDF/A files were added in later versions). Now you can:
    1. Either turnoff the checkbox to create PDF/A while scanning as shown in image below: You need to click on "PDF Output Options"  button on the scan dialog to access this and other options.
    or
    2. When you open PDF/A in Acrobat X, you will get a blue message bar at the top, saying that "This file has been opened read only" along with the button "Enable Editing". You can click on "Enable Editing" to modify the pdf. See image below:
This should take care of the first issue.
Regarding the second issue of PDF attachments, I am not sure what could be the problem. It may be an OS issue related to file association. You can try associating the pdf files to Acrobat. To do this, Right Click on any pdf file and click "Get Info", then under "Open With" panel, select Acrobat and click on "Change All". See image below:
    Thanks,
    Varinder

  • Can't open pdfs with Adobe Acrobat X

I can't open pdfs with Adobe Acrobat X. I get this message:
Warning: Distiller will not process .Log, .PDF or .JDF file extensions
What do I need to do to be able to open .pdf files? I could open them previously.

What are you getting the message in response to? Was this a creation of a PDF that resulted in the message? What are you using Distiller for? Distiller can only open PS and EPS files for processing to create a PDF.
PDF files are opened in Acrobat. For opening PDFs, Distiller has nothing to do with the opening. So I really have no idea. It sounds like you may just be having a creation error since you mentioned a log file. If you were creating a PDF, have you checked the LOG file for the errors? The log file is usually located where you were going to create the PDF, but is created as Distiller processes the file (part of the general Acrobat creation process) and is deleted if successful.
If you were trying to create, go back to the original application and print to file with the Adobe PDF printer. Then open that file in Distiller to create a PDF. Any errors will be shown in the window and an indication if the PDF was created or not.

  • Can not open pdf links

For some reason I can no longer open pdf links.  When I click on a link to a pdf file, a new tab opens but the file does not dowload or display.  This happens in  both Safari and Firefox.

Make sure you have updated Acrobat X to the latest version 10.1.3.  They updated the PDF plug-in in 10.1.1:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/837/cpsid_83708/attachments/Acrobat_Reader_ReleaseNote_ 10.1.1.pdf#page=4

  • Unable to open pdf created with Acrobat Pro using Adobe Reader X

Files created with some Adobe Professional applications such as Acrobat Pro ensure the file is small by excluding font information from the file.  Simple pdf creation applications embed the font in the file, which makes for transportability between apps but does make the files big.
The problem i have experienced is that Adobe Reader X is one of the simple app varieties, so is unable to open, print, or read files created using Adobe Acrobat Pro..
i'd welcome any help in (a) finding a free app that opens these 'pro pdf' files, OR (b) an option setting in Acrobat Pro which includes the font information in the file - or both!

There are so many things wrong, around a tiny grain of truth, it really isn't worth examining. Not at this stage if you are more interested in getting things working.  It may be worth asking you though, since Reader doesn't even launch for you, how you came to focus on font embedding being the cause.
Ok, Reader doesn't launch. Suppose you start Reader FIRST. Then use File > Open on your PDF.
