Reading a file via tcp/ip

I have used the open application reference and the open vi reference with the invoke node to remotely activate a vi and this works fine. The vi on the remote comuter creates an output file which i then need to get onto the local computer and I am unsure how to do this, can anyone help, im sure it cant be too hard but i dont really understand the vi client and vi server tcp/ip examples shipped with labview. Im sure it cant be too hard but its just not clicking for me. Can anyone tell me how to do this

Hi Ridge,
I would like to take a stab at answering your questions while avoiding writing a book in the process.
The questions you are asking go down below where you generally work with TCP/IP in the LabVIEW environment. When you are using a PC on a local area network (that may, or may not be connected to the internet) there are a number delivery mechanisms available for moving messages about between machines and the application running on them.
I will try to give you a layman's tour through some of what is going on to move this information around by starting at the bottom and touching on just enough to answer some of your questions.
About 20 years ago the OSI 7-layer model came out describing how people should organize their communications schemes such that many different applications from different vendors would play nice together. This 7-layer model broke the whole process down starting at the TOP which I believe they called the application interface layer down to the bottom which talked about the physical layer, things like wires and transcievers and the like.
Looking back I would have to say that the 7-layer model has worked rather well as far as it has been adhered to. Getting back,
The physical layer also talks about how data will be put on the wire and taken off. Examples of physical layers are things like
Ethernet
Token-Ring
etc.
In the case of ethernet you have any number of computers virtually all sharing the same wire to do the talking. No two can talk at the same time otherwise they would step on each other. This is called a collision. The whole thing works sort of like a party line with a buch of people taking turns having different conversations. Same thing happens on ethernet. Seperate device take turns saying what they have to say and then letting others talk.
To make it fair for all there is a limit of how long your message can be. This keeps one device (person) from tying up the line. If I remeber correctly that was somthing like 4096 bytes or there abouts.
So how does allow larger transferes? That is where the 7-layer model kicks in. In the next higher level, above ethernet and token ring and the like, are the transfer protocols. The transfer protocols are responcible for moving data using the physical layer. Examples of transfer are TCP, UDP, DECnet, LAT, etc.
As in the case of TCP (Transfer Control Protocol ?) they have they trem Protocol buied in them. They all utilize the physical layer to provide what ever service they provide using a set of rules to interact with a conterpart on another part of the physical layer. (boy was that a bad sentence).
Returning to the earlier anology of th ephone conversation. You could have many conversations taking place in different languages as long as the listener and the talker where speaking the same language. same way over ethernet. One talker could speak TCP (english) as long as there was a listner listening for TCP (english) and intermitantly another talker could be talking UDP (spanish) to a different listner listening in UDP (spanish). TCP is just the protocol, or set of rules that are used to interact.
To take the next step up we have to introduce another complication to our party-line analogy. Let say Bill and Bob want to talk english while Sue and Sally want to talk english?
New problem, new rule.
Whenever talking, all conversations must consist of the following format.
Talker,Listner,message.
Eaves droping would sound like,
Bob Bill How are you?
Sue Sally The tangent of the circle would tell us that.
etc
This new rule is analogous to the IP part of TCP/IP. When you are asking for an IP address you are looking for a name that you can use when you are talking. You could use the IP you where born with (static IP), or you could pick up an alias and use it to do some random talking if you want.
WHo decides? The network admisitrator. On my network at home, I set up all of the IP addresses. At work, I have to request one if I need one.
One of the things a network administrator can do is set things up so that there is one machine on the network that gives out aliases to anyone that asks. This is a dynamic IP address. In this case, any to two individuals could talk using aliases, by contacting the the name server and finding out what is the current alias of any other machines.
I have carried on here for quite a while so I wil call it here. I just wanted to explain what is going on below LbVIEW.
Ben
(Legal disclaimer:
I was just talk of the top of my head here. I know TCP/IP are technically two levels tied together, and what ever happened to layers 4-6 anyway?)

  • How do I transfer a sound file via TCP?

    I have a .wav file that I'm trying transfer via TCP.  Using LV 8.5, I modified the "Sound File to Output.vi" example to send the data across a TCP connection to a client vi.  But, I've encountered numerous errors along the way with trying to convert the sound data which is a  1-D array of waveform double.  I've attached my server and client VI, but essentially, what I tried to do is break down the array into the y and dt components, send those over the TCP connection, rebuild the waveform client-side, and then play the waveform.  Is there something I'm missing?  Do I need the timestamp information as well and send that over too?  Please let me know how this can be accomplished.  Thanks!

    Streaming Music - Client.vi ‏65 KB

    One thing to clarify: While the Sound Output Write does not need the dt information, the dt information wouold be required when you use the Configure VI in order to set up the rate.  However, you only need to send that parameter once. Thus, it would seem to me that you want to change your client code so that it checks to see if it receives a special command or something to indicate the start of a new song that may have been sampled at a different rate. If this is the case, then you can reconfigure the sound output. Otherwise, all that you're listening for is just song data that you send along to the Sound Output Write.

  • Ipod too slow when reading video files via DVD player with USB port.

    Hi all, this is my first message in this forum.
    I've got a DVD player that has a USB port and reads all types of disks. When I use my IPOD 80 GB the files I read are somehow frozen and don't run properly (lack of sync between audio and video, etc). I've got version 1.2.1 and use it in disk mode otherwise the player doesn’t see it. Meanwhile a friend of mine uses it's 60 Gb IPO on the same player, version 1.0 and it doesn't need to go to disk mode, and the player reads perfect from it. Is this a problem of the ipod software version?
    Both ipods are in Fat32 format, but in his ipod the partition is set to active. I can't change mine to that, because windows is seeing my IPOD as a removable device, and my friend’s IPOD as a disk.
    Hope I haven't been too confusing, and I welcome any help anyone can give.
    Thanks.

    Sorry, but I don't even know
    what it is you are trying to do. Are you attaching
    the iPod to a stand alone DVD player? Are you trying
    to export stuff out of the iPod into the DVD player?
    Patrick
    Hi, I'm attaching the iPod to a stand alone DVD player, that has a usb input port. And then read video files from it.

  • Adobe Reader 11 (XI) won't open file via command line

    Hello,
    I have posted this question to probably inapropriate topic earlier today, so I am repeating it again.
    I installed newest Adobe Reader XI today and when I tried to open certain pdf file via command line, it reported a syntax error. Now, this syntax worked so far on versions 9 and 10  (I checked today with them and it is working), so my question is - where can I find new syntax, if there is any? Googling didn't help. Or what else could wrong?
    In previous versions I was able to open pdf file (on page 5) like this (all was taken from Help file "Open parameters")
    "CompletePathToAdobeReader"/A"page=5""CompletePathToPDF",
    ie
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe"/A"page=5""d:\V2\DataSheet.pdf"
    but now - not that it doesn't open specific page, but it doesn't want to open file at all.
    edit:
    Operating systems running: Windows 7, Windows XP
    Thank you.
    Message was edited by: v604

    Yes, it reported correctly becuase there is a syntax error in your command. Try spaces between the /A switch and open parameter. Try this:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe" /A "page=5" "d:\V2\DataSheet.pdf"
    Hope this helps.

    Hi there, I need to be able to read raw files from an Olympus Stylus 1 via CS5 and Lightroom 4.  I have downloaded Raw file plug-in v 6.7.1 but still can't read the files?

    Read this table http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
    The Olympus Stylus 1 was first supported in Camera Raw 8.3 which is only compatible with CS6 and CC.
    It is not compatible with CS5 or older and never will be.
    If you do not want to upgrade to CS6 or CC then you can dwonload the free Adobe DNG converter, convert all Stylus 1 Raw files to DNGs then edit the DNGs in CS5.

  • Servlet for reading lotus notes nsf-file via corba-interface

    Hello,
    we have written a servlet for reading lotus notes nsf-file via corba-interface.
    So we can read lotus notes-files in a portal url-iview.
    Are you interested?
    Best regards
    Oliver Prodinger

    If you check out the thread from my question (524480), we found
    that we had to enable the IIOP task on the domino server as we
    were not running it, this cured the problem I think you are
    encountering.
    This has not solved all our problems as I only see Notes data in
    the Inbox Portlet Preview mode, this problem is refered by other
    contributors as the collapsing Portlet problem (496625) and I do
    not know whether there is a solution to this problem yet.
    Hope this helps.

    Hello
    You where right for the file structure.
    I think that it is a complementary reason to locate the data whithout assuming that it sit in paragraph x or y.
    The trailing script get rid of that and allow to grab values from a file containing more than a single entry.
    --[SCRIPT]

    The app does not allow copying and reading the PDF downloaded via acsm delivery mechanism as it reports to be protected.  Is this known issue or needs to be treated like a feature request. On PC, you read this document via Adobe Digital Editions.

    That is definitely a very old Reader version!  Uninstall it, then install the latest Reader for Vista, which is 10.1.9

  • XModem via TCP for Java

    I am sure that many of you experienced developers have read requests in the past concerning implmentation of Ward Christenen's XModem protocol over a TCP socket. If not, well... you are about to...
    This is a major hack... but it is starting to come together... thanks to Fred Potter for his source code to start this project...
    Objective:
    Basically, I want to create a console application which accepts an incoming connection and starts the receive mode for a XModem file transfer. I am using CGTerm (for Commodore retrocomputing) but can test with HyperTerminal as well...
    The user who connects to the server selects SEND and the FILE to send for a XModem file transfer... and the transfer begins...
    The incoming blocks of 128 bytes are written to a file
    After the transfer is over the server disconnects the client terminal.
    Here is what I have so far:
    import java.net.*;
    import java.lang.*;
    import java.io.*;
    // X-Modem Server implementation via TCP/IP socket
    public class XServer {
    public static FileWriter fw;
    public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
    // define the file
    try {
    fw = new FileWriter("filename.txt");
    } catch (Exception e) {
    System.out.println(e);
    System.exit(0);
    int port = Integer.parseInt(args[0]);
    ServerSocket server = new ServerSocket(port);
    System.out.println("X-Server v1.0 - waiting for connection");
    Socket client = server.accept();
    // Handle a connection and exit.
    try {
    InputStream inputStream = client.getInputStream();
    OutputStream outputStream = client.getOutputStream();
    new PrintStream(outputStream).println("Go to send file mode!"); // sent to client
    System.out.println("Ready to receive file via X-Modem...");
    * BEGIN TRANSFER HERE!
    // set the debug flag
    XModem.debug = true;
    * Here we are instantiating a new InputStream that represents the remote
    * file that we are receiving. In this single line we are attempting to
    * start the flow.
    * Behind The Scenes: We're sending a NAK across the serial line repeatedly
    * until we finaly start seeing the data flow. If we don't see the data
    * flow, then we throw an exception.
    System.out.println("Sending NAK to start receive mode...");
    InputStream incomingFile;
    try {
    incomingFile = new XModemRXStream(inputStream, outputStream);
    } catch (IOException e) {
    System.out.println("ERROR! Unable to start file transfer!");
    e.printStackTrace();
    return;
    System.out.println("Starting file transfer...");
    * Here we are reading from the incoming file, byte by byte, and printing out.
    * Behind The Scenes: Internally, the read() method is handling the task of
    * asking for the next data block from the remote computer, processing it (i.e.
    * parsing, running checksums), and then putting it in an internal buffer. Not
    * all calls to read() will request a new data block as each block contains at
    * least 128 bytes of data. Sometimes you will only hit the buffer.
    try {
    for (;;) {
    int c = incomingFile.read();
    if (c==-1)
    break; // End of File
    // print character / byte
    System.out.print(c+",");
    // write to file
    try {
    //System.out.print(".");
    fw.write(c);
    } catch (Exception e) {
    System.out.println(e);
    System.exit(0);
    } catch (IOException e) {
    System.out.println("error while reading the incoming file.");
    e.printStackTrace();
    return;
    // done
    System.out.println("File sent.");
    new PrintStream(outputStream).println("");
    new PrintStream(outputStream).println("transfer successful!");
    } finally {
    //client.close();
    // save the file
    try {
    fw.close();
    System.out.println("file saved.");
    } catch (Exception e) {
    System.out.println(e);
    System.exit(0);

    Ok. Fair enough. What about general information about Xmodem. This is a hard project because of how obscure the legacy technology is that I am having to implement using Java and MySQL.
    I have two major issues which I have to figure out how to troubleshoot and debug, if possible.
    1. The 23+ blocks exception when a file is being received
    2. The exception which is thrown immediately if I try to receive a binary file instead of an ASCII file.
    I read that telnet is a 7-bit technology and that is why Xmodem, which is an 8-bit technology is not that popular as a viable protocol via telnet, whereas Kermit is, since it was developed for 7-bit systems, i.e. mainframes and minicomputers.
    Is this correct?
    If that is the case, why does www.serio.com have a viable X-Y-ZModem library available (for several hundred $$$ of course) which can be used with both RS-232 serial ports and TCP socket ports? Obviously, it can be done. They are the ONLY company with this library for sale for Java to do this. I cannot justify that $$$ amount for a mere hobby (writing the BBS emulation server for supporting Commodore PETSCII (CG) callers via CGTerm or a native C-64 terminal program using Jim Brain's TCPSER middleware, which emulates a Hayes modem via telnet for telBBSing/retrocomputing.
    I really want to learn how to implement a file transfer protocol, since back in the 80s, I used Xmodem, Punter, Y/Z Modem, etc., a lot to upload and download files via modem at baud rates of 2400, 14.4, 19.2, and 38.4, respectively.
    It's fun to learn how the old skool gurus of telecommunications technology did it. It is one thing to run a BBS which supports these technologies and features, and it is an entirely other thing to learn how to design and develop them yourself for implementation into a project such as I taken on.
    It CAN be done. It WILL be done. However, I have just started my exhaustive research on how it needs to be done. I have read up as much as I could on XModem by Ward C., the father of the protocol.
    But, I have no information to help me figure out why the communications are acting as they do so far.
    Can someone please download the xserver.zip file on my website at:
    www.retrogradebbs.com/projects/xserver.zip
    Compile it. Run it. Connect using HyperTerminal, Netrunner, or another telnet terminal emulation program which supports Xmodem file transfers using WinSock.
    See what happens. With finals due in the next two days, this project will have to be put on hold until after I submit my two final projects.
    If anyone knows what needs to be done to support both ASCII and BINARY file transfers via Xmodem via a socket instead of a modem with RTS/CTS hardware flow control, please respond.
    I know for a fact that this can be done.

    Is it wise to keep the Nikon camera files "DSC's"  after downloading them and converting to DNG files via Adobe converter for lightroom use. In other words do the DNG files have all the raw data I would ever need in processing or should I save the camera's DSC files?

    DNG files do not contain some metadata supplied by the camera, which can be used by the manufacturer's software. Thus, if you don't keep the original Raw photo, you will lose this information.
    If your 1000% sure you're never going to use the manufacturer's software, then this isn't a problem. But who can be sure what software you will be using 10 years from now?

    Are you using a BT Home Hub with the IP Phone attached. This holds onto the SIP port that iChat uses. There is no way to get the router to release this port.
    I had to return it all to BT as unfit for purpose and switched to Eclipse!

  • \\Error Reading Rules File when dimbuild with DLR

    Hi
    I am using Essbase 11.1.2.1.
    I create a DLR via the web console EAS (11.1.2.1 too) : a very simple one : dimbuild DLR, ";" as separator, 2 fields (parent and child)
    when i try do do a "Update Ouline..." with a very simple file (1 line : accounts;test) I have this error message "\\Error Reading Rules File"
    I don't know if it can help but if I create the same DLR on another 7.1 essbase serveur through this same wec eas console (11.1.2.1), I have no problem...
    another information, too : my 11.1.2.1 server has a //ESS_LOCALE English_UnitedStates.Latin1@Binary ESSLANG. My 7.1 server has a //ESS_LOCALE French_France.ISO-8859-15@Default ESSLANG. I really don't know if there is a link, or absolutely not.
    Thanks in advance for your help!
    Fanny

    unable to load essmsh.exe : the error message seems to indicate that it is a problem with a path in the environment variables.
    So if you say that the "Error Reading Rules File" is typically a path issue, all is probably linked!
    The admin will probably correct that tomorrow : I let you know if it solves the problem!
    Thanks!

  • How do I find the AS that this links to in my flash file via "find"?

    I have a flash file that I have on a web page. When I hover over the Join Us image, the mouse changes to a hand. I can click on the "button" but it doesn't take me anywhere. I'm trying to find out if there is a way to find the link in my Flash file via the "Find" function. What is causing the "hand" to appear, is there a goto or click actionscript that I can search? It's a pretty complex file which I didn't create, and I've had no luck finding this button layer, or AS.
    I'm hoping to find where this AS is and link it to a page on my site. Thanks!

    Ned, you're back to save the day for me again. You helped me with the mask issue I had a few days ago and I'll have you know, the flash ad came out brilliantly. Everyone loved it.
    So you were right, I did find the code AS3.
    onClipEvent (load) {
        this.hitArea = this.area;
    on (rollOver) {
        this.gotoAndPlay("s1");
    on (releaseOutside, rollOut) {
        this.gotoAndPlay("s2");
    on (release) {
    s1 and s2 are animations where the Join Us text rolls out and Rolls in as different colors.
    I added the following to the code and it seems to work great.
    onClipEvent (load) {
        this.hitArea = this.area;
    on (rollOver) {
        this.gotoAndPlay("s1");
    on (releaseOutside, rollOut) {
        this.gotoAndPlay("s2");
    on (release) {
              getURL("http://mysite.html", "_self", "GET");
    Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction. I think I may owe you a lunch or something after this is all said and done!

  • Visual Studio 2013. Viewing a PDF file via the Web Browser control in Windows 8.1

    I am writing a Windows Forms application in which I need to view PDF files via the Web Browser control. When the control is given the Navigate() command, Windows takes over and asks which program I want to open the file with. All was fine with VS 2010 and
    XP. I have un-installed "PDF Complete", which was the default PDF viewer, but I now get asked for an alternative.
    Thanks in advance.
    Mike Saunders

    Hi Mike,
    It seems that we could use Internet Explorer to open a local .PDF file if it has the Adobe Reader. I doubt that the web control would be related to it. Like the MVP's suggset in the following thread, maybe it would be related
    to certain plug-in tools in your side like the adober reader.
