Reading constants in bpel

What is the best strategy of reading the constants that are used in Expressions in bpel?
Can we read them from some kind of property files? Is there any example prj which shows how to read propery files in bpel?

You can have them declared in BPEL.xml as properties and then access in bpel code using function 'getProperty'

• Constants in BPEL - best practice?

Hello,
In our workflows we use a lot of constant values. Constants can be of course hardcoded to the bpel process, but it is not very nice solution for viewing or editing them later. What would be the best practice for handling constants in BPEL? Could the constants be defined in a xml schema and use them in bpel process? I couldn't get this work with a quick try.
Best regards,
Tommi

This should work as well. Thanks!
I made a customXPath function for reading the constants from a table. Here is the how-to if somebody is interested:
1. I created a table "bpel_constants" with two colums "key" and "Value"
2. I created a customXPath function for reading a "value" from the "bpel_constants" based on the "key"
public class ReadConstant implements IXPathFunction
private String dbName = "jdbc/BPELSamplesDataSource";
public Object call(IXPathContext context,
List args) throws XPathFunctionException
if (args.size() == 1)
if (args.get(0) instanceof String)
return readConstant((String)args.get(0));
throw new XPathFunctionException( "readConstant() requires string argument." );
private String readConstant(String key) throws XPathFunctionException
Connection conn = null;
String result = "";
Statement stmt = null;
try
conn = makeConnection();
stmt = conn.createStatement();
ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery("select " + "value " + "from " + "bpel_constants " + "where " + "key = '" + key + "'");
if (rs.next())
result = rs.getString(1);
else
throw new XPathFunctionException("Value not found for " + key);
} catch (SQLException se)
throw new XPathFunctionException(se.getMessage(), se);
} catch (NamingException ne)
throw new XPathFunctionException(ne.getMessage(), ne);
} finally
try
if (stmt != null)
stmt.close();
if (conn != null)
conn.close();
} catch (SQLException se)
throw new XPathFunctionException(se.getMessage(), se);
return result;
private Connection makeConnection() throws NamingException, SQLException
InitialContext ic = new InitialContext();
DataSource ds = (DataSource) ic.lookup(dbName);
return ds.getConnection();
- makeConnection uses a JNDI to lookup the same datasource that the BPEL Engine uses (this requires a jndi.properties file to be in a BPEL Engine classpath to work).
3. I put the ReadConnection class to the BPEL Engine classpath and defined the function in the xpath-functions.xml config file:
<function id="readConstant">
<classname>asdf.xpath.function.ReadConstant</classname>
<comment>
Reads constant from bpel_constants table based on the key. The signature of this function is asdf:readConstant(string).
</comment>
<property id="namespace-uri">
<value>http://asdf.com/xpath/CustomXpathFunction</value>
<comment>Namespace URI for this function</comment>
</property>
<property id="namespace-prefix">
<value>asdf</value>
<comment>Namespace prefix for this function</comment>
</property>
</function>
4. Then the function can be called in the bpel like for example:
<assign name="Assign_2">
<copy>
<from expression="asdf:readConstant(string(bpws:getVariableData('inputVariable','payload','/client:customXPathtestProcessRequest/client:input')))"/>
<to variable="outputVariable" part="payload" query="/client:customXPathtestProcessResponse/client:result"/>
</copy>
</assign>

• Service reads data but Bpel process does not start

i have a very simple project. I have db2(as400) adapter and it reads data, i will receive data, transfom and send to oracle database. I deployed the project successfuly but when instance start i see the service reads the data but bpel process does not start and and there is no error. At the flow chart there is only readAS400 partnerlink, there is no bpelprocess. In the partnerlink i am usin polling, i read the data's with 1 and update to 2. It reads but dont update to 2.
In deploy step and when instance starts there is no errors. But when i am deploying i get a warning but i dont know it's related with this situation.
(Warning: property "activationAgent.readAs400.className" may not be understood by BPEL component BPELProcessEqpType - it will likely be ignored.)
Do you have any suggestion ? Thanks in advance.

check the recovery console, the bpel process possibly is going into manual recovery,
Another thing you might wanna try is using checkpoints in your process..
also, instead of getting the db adapter to instantiate the process, try a simpler process just to see if the db adapter is working or not..
A normal process, which you manually instantiate from em console, with the db adapter in it after the recevie activity

• Primavera Web service call to read project using BPEL

Hi,
Please let me know if any sample available in BPEL that invoke primavera web service to read the projects.
we tried but we are getting error of accessing endpoints.
please let me know how to fix and available sample
Thanks

I have tried couple more things:
1) I tried using HttpWatch (HTTP sniffer) with no luck (basic version works only on selected websites and premium is not offered on trial basis)
2) I have implemented and triggered WS call using JavaScript and that has revealed what I was worried about (limitations due to licensing).
When I am executing WS using reader (regardless if PDF has been Reader Extended or not) I am getting same error message:
"NotAllowedError: Security settings prevent access to this property or method"
When I am opening same form in Acrobat Professional I am getting message:
“InvalidArgsError: Invalid arguments.”
Latter error does not make much sense since call is failing straight after requesting URL with Web Service (unless WS definition is not correct, which would be weird to say the least since I can import/bind it with no problems inside Adobe Designer).
I did some more reading about licensing issues/restrictions (see: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/286035?decorator=print&displayFullThread=true) and it seems that I would need to use LiveCycle ES server to enable WS calls for PDF in Adobe Reader which is absolute overkill in my opinion.
If anyone knows other way to make WS work in Adobe Reader (w/o paying for LC ES license or using server scripts instead) please do share your idea.

• Read XML in BPEL and assign values to variables

Hello,
I need to read an xml message in BPEL and assign variables created in BPEL the values of elements in XML message. Whats the best possible way to do this.

When you say"*read an xml message*", is the xml coming as input message or you need to read from file ?
If you want to read from file, you can make use of the below function.
Returns the string value of an element defined by lookupXPath in a XML file (docURL) given its parent XPath (parentXPath), the key XPath (keyXPath) and the value of the key (key). Usage: oraext:lookup-xml(docURL as string, parentXPath as string, keyXPath as string, lookupXPath as string, key as string)
Example: oraext:lookup-xml('file:/d:/country_data.xml', '/Countries/Country', 'Abbreviation', 'FullName', 'UK') returns the value of the element FullName child of /Countries/Country where Abbreviation = 'UK' in the file d:\country_data.xml

• Reading file using File Adapter in BPEL

Hi,
I am using JDeveloper 11g.
I am trying to Read XML file and write content to Text file.
I created XML Schema, XML file.
I created Asynchronous BPEL process (Auto Generated)
I took one File adapter which will have Read operation and one more File Adapter which will have Write Operation.
Then, added one Receive activity that will be connecting to partner link - Read.
and one Invoke activity which is linked to Write Partner link .
I am able to Deploy the process..
While testing 1st receive (Auto generated) will work but Receive for Read is not getting started.
I am getting " Waiting for "Read" from "ReadFile". Asynchronous callback.Waiting for "Read" from "ReadFile". Asynchronous callback "
How to read file in BPEL process. ?
Thanks

So,You have two receive activity(One for soap client and one for Read activity) and two invoke(1 for write file and 1 for reply to client).
I think the 1st receive activity for soap client not required as you want to initiate the process while read the file.You can delete the default soap client and corresponding receive activity and check the create instance chekbox in the 2nd receive activity linked with read partnerlink.
There is some issue with 2nd receive activity in bpel ..

• How to read values from Property file into BPEL process local variable?

I would like to use a Property file with some parameters e.g.
<myparm1>12345</myparm1>
How can I read from a BPEL process such a Property file and assign it into e.g. local variable "intparm1"?
Where (in which directory) should I put this XML Property file to have it always available for reading?
Peter

Hi,
You can also use
ora:readFile( ) function as follow :
ora:readFile(xml file location (ex. "file:///D:\\SOA\\FileAdapters\\readFile\\test\\test.xml"),xsd file location (ex."file:///D:\\SOA\\FileAdapters\\readFile\\test\\test.xsd"))
inside the assign activity and assign this to the variable you want.

• 2 BPEL Processes doing Read at same directory in File Adapter.

Hi,
I am using File Adapter for Read operation. Normally we would make a Logical Directory for reading files at that location. There is a design design scenario where 2 BPEL processes will need to read file from same File location.
Incase such a design is implemented, will it work? And if yes, what will the precedence for reading file by BPEL processes. Also, will both of them read the files or one will be reading the file?
OR
Is there any other way that the same design can be implemeted??
I am using Oracle SOA 10.1.3.4 and JDeveloper 10.1.3.4.
Will really appreciate if someone can help in this regard.
Thanks for the needful.
Cheers,
Varun

Hi Varun
As per the best practice guide :
The file and FTP adapters support the high availability feature for the active-passive
topology. Perform the following steps to configure the adapter for this feature:
1. Create a shared folder on a highly available file system. This folder must have
write permissions and must be accessible from all systems running the file and
FTP adapters.
2. Open the pc.properties file available in the SOA_ORACLE_
HOME\bpel\system\service\config directory on each node.
3. Set oracle.tip.adapter.file.controldirpath to the shared folder name.
This is the shared folder that stores the control files for the adapter.
4. Restart the servers.
Note that in the case of Oracle ESB, you must rename SOA_ORACLE_
HOME\integration\esb\config\pc.
You can use a trigger file .tg to notify the second process that it can pick the file which the first process has written into the folder.

• Error In Constant Reading

Hi
I had developed a very simple vi that takes in pressure readings from a peizo electric sensor once in 15 seconds, and displays it in a graph and also writes values it to a measurement file .
However though the pressure is maintained constant the graph shows results fluctuating from +5 to -5 ( almost like a square graph) I am sure that I have connected the have connected my terminals right and also the pressure gauge reads constant one bar pres. I do not know why my readings are fluctuating .
Please help.
Thanks in advance.

Please do check the functonality of the piezo sensor.
If that is working perfiectly fine, do attach your code.

• How to configure File Adapter (Read)..?

Hi all,
While configuring the Read Adapter in BPEL 11g i am getting not reading any data from given location. But my location are correct.. So please how to configure File Read adapter and give any URL for this ... Thank you

Hi all,
The file adapter it consists many operations like
1: Read
2:Write
3:Synchronous Read
4:ListFiles
So you are asking about Read operation
First you take one File Adapter-->Select Read Operation--->Give Incomming file Location ( In local system you can give like C:/temp/NewDir Or Unix Envornment like you can give /temp/NewDir)
After that you can give file Name like wich format it's incomming file name like CSV.txt or CSV.xml after you give Polling Intervels second or Mintued or Hour.You can select Native format or Define service Later once configure all those things the file adapter configration is done . If you have any doubts in file configrigation please go for the below link...........

• Counting number of files read by File adapter

I have configured a file adapter in a BPEL prcs to read files from a location. The adapter is polling files with a specific file ext(say txt). Is it possible to know the number of files read by the BPEL prcs at the end of the day??? i,e.
is it possible that a BPEL instance after reading a file updates the count in a variable and this variable value is seen by other BPEL instances and the other instances can also update the value....
Any pointers will be helpful...
Thanks

You could make use of some logtable and log it inhere.
In the bpel after a file is pickup up, read this value from the table, add 1 to it, and write it back.
Or try this approach from Lucas :

I am using the setting for file adapter to avoid race condition in HA environment.
Set oracle.tip.adapter.file.controldirpath=/ftpdata/elshap1/reach in pc.properties file
This is shared folder accesible from both nodes & is given 777 full permission till the folder outbound where the temp fiel is getting created.
Please let me know if you have any idea on this.
This is a severe prodcution issue for us.
thanks in advance.
