Reading from a non-HTTP socket in WL; same idea as WL.system.listenPort

Hi Fellow EJBers,
I have a system which must listen on a TCP port that is not the normal
WebLogic port nor the standard HTTP port for client connection
requests. Unfortunately, the protocol is low-level TCP/IP sockets and
as it's coming from a legacy system I cannot change. What I'd like to
do is create a startup class in the EJB server that listens to the
correct port and then hands off the socket ID to a bean for further
processing. Then when the response is ready I can use a simple socket
write() method.
I am hoping that this will allow me to use WebLogic's built-in threading
support in this class. I was hoping to find some way to imitate the
WebLogic properties file entry
weblogic.system.listenPort=7001
but I didn't see any references to it in the documentation. Can I use a
servlet or startup class to do this? I don't want to use events if I
can help it to maintain compatibility. Alternatively, I'm thinking
about using a separate Java process running in a different JVM which
would manage the threading issues. This is less desirable because it
complicates sending responses back and I don't know if I can pass the
socket reference into EJB.
Note that right now I'm only worrying about the listening portion, I
must also send requests out to different machines but here I control the
initiation.
Thanks for any and all help,
Terry ([email protected])

Rob,
Could you please explain why you should not create worker threads in the server.
I created a GenericServlet and installed it in the ServerClasses so it does not
ever get more than one instance - it listens on a server socket (in a thread) and
accepts connections and allows replies to the
connected socket. I use it for debugging where you connect to the port with Telnet and
each developer that wants to output a debug string from a JSP back to their Telnet can
do so. It works fine.
I don't want to screw the server up so please enlighten me.

You definitely should not create worker threads in the server. Use WebLogic
events or JMS instead.

Rob,
Is it OK to start your own threads that listen on a particular port? I've been
informed over and over again that this is a recipe for disaster. If it is
acceptable to start up a port listener thread at some times, when is it
acceptable and when isn't it? (I know not to do it with Servlets or EJB's)
Thanks in advanced..

Okay, that seems reasonable. Note, that EJB 1.1 (the next version of
the spec) prohibits bean writers from directly reading or writing sockets.

  • Read Timeout on non-blocking sockets

    Hi,
    I was wondering if there is a way to specify a read timeout (like setSoTimeout for synchronous sockets) when using a non-blocking socket.
    I'd like to have the select() method return is a sockets timeout expires, puting in the selected key set the timedout socket and have it's read operation return -1, something like what happens when a socket is closed by the other side.
    The thing is I need this to be a timeout specific to each socket, thus the select(millis) isn't apropriate.
    Anyone knows of something like this?
    Thanks....

    Yeah, select() is the only thing built in for that, and you have to do the bookkeeping yourself. You would start something like forming the disjunction of the ready keys and the registered keys after each select, to get the unready keys, and then looking at their history to see how long they have been unready via a Map{key,Long(time)).

    This could be caused by a USB connection issue. Make sure the iPhone is directly connected to the Mac using the USB cable it came with. Also, try disconnecting all other USB devices.

  • HTTP Response :500 unable to connect to remote system.

    Hi,
    I am doing proxy-xi-file scenario, where i am getting this error in sxmb_moni in R/3.
    The error reads with red flag:
    HTTP Response :500 unable to connect to remote system.
    Please  tell me what can be the reason.

    Snehal,
    Error: The error message 503 Service unavailable Application stopped! is displayed.
    Description: The server is currently unable to handle the request due to a temporary overloading or maintenance of the server. The implication is that this is a temporary condition which will be alleviated after some delay. If known, the length of the delay MAY be indicated in a Retry-After header. If no Retry-After is given, the client SHOULD handle the response as it would for a 500 response.
    Note: The existence of the 503 status code does not imply that a server must use it when becoming overloaded. Some servers may wish to simply refuse the connection.
    Possible Tips: Because of J2EE application com.sap.aii.af.ms.app not active
    • Try to (re)start the application using the Visual Administrator Choose Server --> Services --> Deploy --> View on Application or restart the J2EE engine
    • The problem is that not all J2EE services can be started by the J2EE. i.e Start the Visual Administrator and select Server->Services->Deploy in the tree on the left. On the right-hand side, choose the Runtime tab page. You see a tree in the right window with all applications if you select the APPLICATION radio button. Check if they are running, otherwise choose Start. Usually the J2EE engine starts all services automatically.

  • "No more data to read from socket."?

    Hi everybody,
    We recently migrated from Oracle 10g Database Enterprise Edtion to Oracle 11g R2 Database Enterprise Edition
    with Data Guard and a dedicated standy-by database. The database is a data source for multiple applications.
    Among others, we are using two JBoss 4.2.3 GA application servers which run together in a clustered configuration.
    During our migration of our database, we also updated our OJDBC thin drivers from Oracle within our JBosses. We
    replaced the ojdbc14.jar with ojbc6.jar (Oracle 11g 11.1.0.7.0) and updated or added referenced libraries as well.
    Since our migration we experience an unfamiliar problem from time to time. Suddenly our deployed EJBs crash with
    the exception "SQLException: No more data to read from socket." The occurence is rather random than bound to
    a specific bean. The only noticeable thing is that it appears more often when there is more work load on our
    JBosses.
    Our only solution up to now is to shutdown our JBosses, restart the database and restart our JBosses again.
    Depending on our work load we do this from every two days to every 4 hours.
    I googled the message and even found several hundred hits that mentioned the exception above, but none of
    them got really solved, instead people found some case of work around for them. But none of them worked for us,
    since this exception seems more general and can have multiple causes.
    We did not have this problems when we were using the Oracle 10g database. Currently I am not sure if this problem
    is related to the new Oracle 11g R2 database, the new OJDBC thin driver or JBoss.
    Anybody experienced the same problem? And maybe even got it properly solved?
    If you need further information, just ask. I will happily offer as much information as possible to solve this.
    Greetings,
    CB

    Hi,
    I remember that we received similar error after upgrading the database from 9.2.0.7 to 10.2.0.4 in one of our application using JDBC 10.1.0.5. We worked with Oracle support, and they provided us with patch Patch 5851267, that resolved our problem.
    So I would recommend you to do the same.

    which jdbc versionare you using ??
    if not the 816sdk -- try it ...
    make sure you match up with the jdk version ...
    note: jdk 1.2 functionality is not in any of the orcl drivers
    yet.
    check out for this faq (3rd question -- i think) for more details
    on jdk 1.2 support :
    http://technet.oracle.com/tech/java/sqlj_jdbc/htdocs/jdbc_faq.htm
    in general -- this occurs due to several different conditions :
    verify that the connections string is correct :
    for thin -- the hostid:port:sid must match the listener you're
    trying to connect with -- and a tcp/ip connection on the server
    ust exist.
    for oci driver make sure the "tnsname" entry being specified
    exists and has the same information in its "entry" correct (i.e.
    matches the listener values)
    also make sure the listener and the orcl instance are started.
    also make sure you're using jdk 1.1.x with 8.1.5 or lower
    drivers.
    816sdk can be used with jdk 1.1 or 1.2 if you are using the
    correct jdbc driver version from otn to match the jdk version.
    only jdk 1.1.x functionality is available in the jdk 1.2 driver
    at this time.
    also make sure you're using a thin driver if in an applet.
    thin or oci in a servlet is ok if properly set up.

    always provide :
    jdk details,
    applet vs. application vs. servlet,
    jdbc driver version number and type(thin/oci)
    also server version in all cases and if oci driver is being
    used -- the oracle client version,

    Hi Sudeep,
    This error most likely occurs when you use DB connection pool, which I think is the case in XI. When the JDBC adapter tries to connect to the database and discovers that the connection has been timed out/lost, then this exception is generated. Please have a look of the connection settings of your JDBC adapter and also at the note 831162.
    Cheers...

    Hi Amar,
    I think you have given the wrong string in the filter, you are getting "*Closing socket as no data read from it on 95.66.7.15:58,089 during the configured idle timeout of 25 secs*" and you have given in the filter "*Closing socket as no data read from it during the configured idle timeout of 5 secs*".
    You can change it and see if that works for you.
    Also the above option is just to suppress the issue which are getting which in this case is fine as its just a warning message, however you can even try to tune few of the follwoing parameters that too would help you to remove this warning message.
    1. Set the parameter -Dweblogic.client.socket.ConnectTimeout=XXX, in the start-up script of the server which you are seeing this issue under JAVA_OPTIONS
    Note: Where "XXX" is the value in ms.
    Example:
    -Dweblogic.client.socket.ConnectTimeout=500
    2. Try tuning the duration time to a higher value from the below Console path
    Server -> Protocols (tab) -> HTTP (sub-tab) -> Duration

                            Object o = readObject(socket); //wait for server message
                                tellListeners(socket, o);
                    } catch (Exception e) {
                        System.err.println("ERROR SocketClient: "+e);
                        e.printStackTrace();
                    try { sleep(1000); } catch (InterruptedException ie) { /* ignore */ }
                }//next client connectionwith readObject() being
        public Object readObject(Socket socket) throws ClassNotFoundException, IOException {
            Object result = null;
    System.out.println("readObject("+socket+") ...");
            if (socket != null && socket.isConnected()) {
    //            ObjectInputStream ois = new ObjectInputStream(socket.getInputStream());
                ObjectInputStream ois = new ObjectInputStream(new DataInputStream(socket.getInputStream()));
                try {
                    result = ois.readObject();
                } finally {
    //                socket.shutdownInput(); //closing of ois also closes socket!
        //            try { ois.close(); } catch (IOException ioe) { /* ignore */ }
            return result;
        }//readObject()Why does ois.readObject() block? I get problems with this as the main while loop (above) calls readObject() as it's the only way to get server messages. But if i want to implement a synchronous call in adition to this asynchronous architecture (call listeners), the readObject() call of the synchronous method comes to late as readObject() call of the main loop got called before and therefore also gets the result of the (later) synchronous call.
    I tried fideling around with some state variables, but that's ugly and probably not thread safe. I'm looking for another solution to check messages from the server without reading data from the stream. is this possible?

    A quick fix:
    - Add a response code at the beginning of each message returned from the server indicating if the message is a synchronous response or a callback (asynch);
    - Read all messages returned from the server in one thread and copy callback messages in a calback message queue and the synch responses in an synch responses queue;
    - Modify your synchronous invocation to retrieve the response from the responses queue instead from the socket. Read the callback messages from the corresponding queue instead from the socket.
    Also take a look at my website. I'm implementing an upgraded version of this idea.

  • Reading from CEP http channel

    How we can read from a CEP subscribed http channel through a servlet?

    yes my application will be hosted by IBM in certain environment...and the URL i am going to call through AJAX is in another domain..
    thing is...sometime i'll get the page but not the js and css for the external domain URL....
    where as i received an input from my archietect that if i make HTTP Socket connection with that URL and specify the allotted port number as well...then we are making the call from a valid connection channel...and that will make the content come back to me....with js and css...
    not sure still how it will differ from direct URL call.
    is that what you are lookign for?
