Reading in object files into an ArrayList

hey guys!
okay, I have all these little icon .gif files, that I want to add to an arrayList so that I can then add them randomly to a cardlayout to make a memory game...hOwever, i'm not too sure how to do this, i'm thinking maybe ObjectInputStream or something.......please help me!
Thanks

First of all: Take a deep breath, and feel your feet... Don't panic, and do not cross-post or re-post with more exclamation marks just to get some attention!
What kind of data are you going to process in your program? Probably images. Have a look at how images are handled in a Java program. How you read them, and how you display them. Then decide on the type of data you are going to keep in which data structure.
Figure out what you want to do.
Take a peak at some java example classes and programs.
Perhaps have a look at the java.awt.Image class. Just an idea...
Kind regards

    ok, so do i need to write a file carsclass.java or is the line:

    going to define my carsclass objects? how do i write my fields for each of the 7 categories?
    i believe i can easily add to and print the arraylist, but i'm confused how to go about creating this arraylist in the first place. do i just create carclass.java and save them all as strings? i guess my question is mainly how should i structure this? any suggestions/help is appreciated.

    String.split uses regular expressions.Ahh yeah ummm (slaps forehead) I'd forgotten that... so maybe StringTokeniser is more accessible for noob's. Sorry.
    Anyway... if all you want/need to so is store a bunch of String field values then how about using an array of String's instead of individual fields... maybe something like:
    forums\Car.java
    * Car Data Transfer Object. All fields are final, making objects of this class
    * thread safe(r).
    * @author keith
    package forums;
    import krc.utilz.stringz.Arrayz;
    public class Car
      // class attributes                       // variables //isn't actually wrong, it's just not quit right.
      private final String[] fields;            // final means values are write once, read many times, which is thread safe(r).
       * Initialises the new Cars fields to the given fields array.
       * @param fields - an array of any (reasonable) length
      public Car(String[] fields) {             // no need to comment a constructor as a constructor.
        this.fields = fields;                   // much better to provide javadoc comments explaining
      }                                         // what the method does and how to use it.
       * Returns this Car's fields as one long string.
      public String toString() {                // It's actually GOOD to be a lazy programmer.
        return Arrayz.join(", ", this.fields);  // I have reused my Arrayz.join in several projects.
                                                // I think you can use Array.toString (new in 1.6) instead.
    krc\utilz\stringz\Arrayz.java
    package krc.utilz.stringz;
    import java.util.List;
    import java.util.ArrayList;
    public class Arrayz
        * returns true if the given value is in the args list, else false.
        * @param value - the value to seek
        * @param args... - variable number of String arguments to look in
      public static boolean in(String value, String... args) {
        for(String a : args) if(value.equals(a)) return true;
        return false;
        * append the elements of array into one string, seperated by FS
        * @param a  - an array of strings to join together
        * @param FS - Field Seperator string, optional default=" "
        * @example
        *  String[] array = {"Bob","The","Builder"};
        *  System.out.println(join(array);
        *  --> Bob The Builder
        *  System.out.println("String[] array = {\""+join(array, "\",\"")+"\"};");
        *  --> String[] array = {"Bob","The","Builder"};
      public static String join(String FS, String[]... arrays) {
        StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer();
        for (String[] array : arrays)
          sb.append(join(array, FS));
        return(sb.toString());
      public static String join(String[] array) {
        return(join(array, " "));
      public static String join(String[] a, String FS) {
        if (a==null) return null;
        if (a.length==0) return "";
        StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer(a[0]);
        for (int i=1; i<a.length; i++) {
          sb.append(FS+a);
    return sb.toString();
    * append all the elements of the given arrays into one big array
    * @param String[]... arrays - to be concatenated
    * @return String[] - one big array
    public static String[] concatenate(String[]... arrays) {
    List<String> list = new ArrayList<String>();
    for(String[] array : arrays) {
    for(String item : array) {
    list.add(item);
    return(list.toArray(new String[0]));
    I guess that Arrayz class might be a bit beyond you at the moment so don't worry too much if you can't understand the code... there are no nasty surprises in it... just cut and paste the code, change the package name, and use it (for now).

  • How to store the data of a file into an ArrayList?

    Hi! everyone.
    I want to know
    if I have a File, and the data in the file are type int, type String...
    And I have a ArrayList which is of type Question
    How do I store the data of that file into the ArrayList
    I tried to use the while loop(use the hasNextLine() to read the data line by line)
    But I cannot add data which are not of type Question to the ArrayList.
    Can you tell me what I should do, please?
    I also wonder that
    The data of the file are of many types, but when I try to read it with the nextLine(), the data all turn out to be of type String. Why?
    Thank you.
    Edited by: Terry001 on Apr 30, 2008 1:13 PM

    No, a line in the file is just part of a question
    The format of the file is like this:
    *<question type code>                    :     String*
    *<question point value>                    :     int*
    *<question category>                         :     String*
    *<question difficulty level>               :     int*
    *<question text>                              :     String*
    *<question correct answer>               :     String*
    *<optional question-specific data>     :     String*
    *<question terminator>                    :     String*
    And here is an example
    TF //TrueFalseQuestion
    5 //points value
    None //category
    3 //difficulty level
    The capital of the United States is Washington, D.C. //question text
    True // answer
    *** //quetion terminator
    I created an ArrayList in the Test class:
    private ArrayList<Question> questions; // Create inside constructor
        public Test (String name, String instr)
            testName = name;
            scoreEarned = 0;
            scorePossible = 0;
            instructions = instr;
            questions = new ArrayList<Question>(); //[MAX_NUMBER_OF_QUESTIONS];
        }And I tried to use the following method to store the data of the file to the ArrayList
    // This method loads a set of questions from a plain text file
        public void loadQuestionsFromFile(String fileName) throws FileNotFoundException
            try
                File fileReader = new File("input.txt");
                Scanner sc = new Scanner(fileReader);
                while (sc.hasNextLine())
                    // I don't know how to pass the data I got from the nextLine() method to the ArrayList because they are of different type
            catch (FileNotFoundException a)
                System.out.println(a);
        }    As all you said, I should create an Question object in the while loop
    Question temp = new Question ();But I have no idea how to pass the int and String to the Question object.
    Thank you

  • How do I convert a shockwave object file into a mp4 or avi video?

    How do I convert a shockwave object file into a mp4 or avi video?  Do you know of any software that converts that type of file?

    The M4V format is a video file format developed by Apple and is very close to the MP4 format. The differences are the optional Apple's DRM copyright protection, and the treatment of AC3 (Dolby Digital) audio which is not standardized for the MP4 container.
    If your M4V video is not unprotected M4V files and without AC3 audio. It may be recognized and played by other video players by changing the file extension from ".m4v" to "mp4".
    So you can try to change the file extension and check if it works. If it doesn't work, try Leawo video converter(for windows or mac) and convert m4v to mp4 format.

  • Read an XML file into an ABAP program and manipulate it.

    I would like to know if it is possible to do the following in an ABAP program:
    1) Read an XML file into an ABAP internal table
    2) Call an XSLT transformation on the source file and store the results in an ABAP table.
    Is this possible to do? I have used ABAP XSLT in PI, but never in an ABAP program. I see you can use the CALL TRANSFORMATION command, but I have never used it in an ABAP program.

  • Reading a text File into a JTextArea

    I know this is really basic question, but what is the best and/or simplest way to read text from a .txt file into a JTextArea? I'm new to Java and any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

    it should be in quotes only if it is a string repersentation of a String class.
    FileReader reader = new FileReader("readme.txt");
    quotes are not needed if you write it this way
    String filename = "readme.txt";
    FileReader reader = new FileReader(filename);
    ...remember that String is a class and not a data type, it is also a special case in java where the class can act like a datatype in declarations.
    I don't think anything else can behave like this in java
    String text = "sometext";
    "sometext".equals(text);
    this returns true.

  • How do I read directly from file into byte array

    I am reading an image from a file into a BuffertedImage then writing it out again into an array of bytes which I store and use later on in the program. Currently Im doing this in two stages is there a way to do it it one go to speed things up.
    try
                //Read File Contents into a Buffered Image
                /** BUG 4705399: There was a problem with some jpegs taking ages to load turns out to be

                BufferedImage bi = null;
                ImageReader ir = null;
                ImageInputStream stream =  ImageIO.createImageInputStream(new File(path));
                final Iterator i = ImageIO.getImageReaders(stream);
                if (i.hasNext())
                    ir = (ImageReader) i.next();
                    ir.setInput(stream);
                    ImageReadParam param = ir.getDefaultReadParam();
                    ImageTypeSpecifier typeToUse = null;
                    for (Iterator i2 = ir.getImageTypes(0); i2.hasNext();)
                        ImageTypeSpecifier type = (ImageTypeSpecifier) i2.next();
                        if (type.getColorModel().getColorSpace().isCS_sRGB())
                            typeToUse = type;
                    if (typeToUse != null)
                        param.setDestinationType(typeToUse);
                    bi = ir.read(0, param);
                    //ir.dispose(); seem to reference this in write
                    //stream.close();
                //Write Buffered Image to Byte ArrayOutput Stream
                if (bi != null)
                    //Convert to byte array
                    final ByteArrayOutputStream output = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
                    //Try and find corresponding writer for reader but if not possible
                    //we use JPG (which is always installed) instead.
                    final ImageWriter iw = ImageIO.getImageWriter(ir);
                    if (iw != null)
                        if (ImageIO.write(bi, ir.getFormatName(), new DataOutputStream(output)) == false)
                            MainWindow.logger.warning("Unable to Write Image");
                    else
                        if (ImageIO.write(bi, "JPG", new DataOutputStream(output)) == false)
                            MainWindow.logger.warning("Warning Unable to Write Image as JPEG");
                    //Add to image list
                    final byte[] imageData = output.toByteArray();
                    Images.addImage(imageData);

    If you don't need to manipulate the image in any way I would suggest you just read the image file directly into a byte array (without ImageReader) and then create the BufferedImage from that byte array.

  • How to read/write .CSV file into CLOB column in a table of Oracle 10g

    I have a requirement which is nothing but a table has two column
    create table emp_data (empid number, report clob)
    Here REPORT column is CLOB data type which used to load the data from the .csv file.
    The requirement here is
    1) How to load data from .CSV file into CLOB column along with empid using DBMS_lob utility
    2) How to read report columns which should return all the columns present in the .CSV file (dynamically because every csv file may have different number of columns) along with the primariy key empid).
    eg: empid report_field1 report_field2
    1 x y
    Any help would be appreciated.

    If I understand you right, you want each row in your table to contain an emp_id and the complete text of a multi-record .csv file.
    It's not clear how you relate emp_id to the appropriate file to be read. Is the emp_id stored in the csv file?
    To read the file, you can use functions from [UTL_FILE|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14258/u_file.htm#BABGGEDF] (as long as the file is in a directory accessible to the Oracle server):
    declare
        lt_report_clob CLOB;
        l_max_line_length integer := 1024;   -- set as high as the longest line in your file
        l_infile UTL_FILE.file_type;
        l_buffer varchar2(1024);
        l_emp_id report_table.emp_id%type := 123; -- not clear where emp_id comes from
        l_filename varchar2(200) := 'my_file_name.csv';   -- get this from somewhere
    begin
       -- open the file; we assume an Oracle directory has already been created
        l_infile := utl_file.fopen('CSV_DIRECTORY', l_filename, 'r', l_max_line_length);
        -- initialise the empty clob
        dbms_lob.createtemporary(lt_report_clob, TRUE, DBMS_LOB.session);
        loop
          begin
             utl_file.get_line(l_infile, l_buffer);
             dbms_lob.append(lt_report_clob, l_buffer);
          exception
             when no_data_found then
                 exit;
          end;
        end loop;
        insert into report_table (emp_id, report)
        values (l_emp_id, lt_report_clob);
        -- free the temporary lob
        dbms_lob.freetemporary(lt_report_clob);
       -- close the file
       UTL_FILE.fclose(l_infile);
    end;This simple line-by-line approach is easy to understand, and gives you an opportunity (if you want) to take each line in the file and transform it (for example, you could transform it into a nested table, or into XML). However it can be rather slow if there are many records in the csv file - the lob_append operation is not particularly efficient. I was able to improve the efficiency by caching the lines in a VARCHAR2 up to a maximum cache size, and only then appending to the LOB - see [three posts on my blog|http://preferisco.blogspot.com/search/label/lob].
    There is at least one other possibility:
    - you could use [DBMS_LOB.loadclobfromfile|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14258/d_lob.htm#i998978]. I've not tried this before myself, but I think the procedure is described [here in the 9i docs|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/appdev.920/a96591/adl12bfl.htm#879711]. This is likely to be faster than UTL_FILE (because it is all happening in the underlying DBMS_LOB package, possibly in a native way).
    That's all for now. I haven't yet answered your question on how to report data back out of the CLOB. I would like to know how you associate employees with files; what happens if there is > 1 file per employee, etc.

  • Reading entire txt file into memory?

    When you are using BufferedReader to read info into a buffer, that means you are reading the file into memory, correct? (Is that what buffer means?)
    I want to look for pattern matches in text files (about 1000 of them) using the regex utils. But I don't want to read and examine the text files line by line. I want to read in the entire text file into memory first and then look for the pattern matches. The text files generally don't exceed about 15K in size. I'm only going one file at a time, too, so this won't give me any out of memory errors, will it?
    And more importantly, how do I do it? I mean the "reading in the file" part only. I have my RegEx, I have my array of files to examine already. I just can't figure out the right code to use to read each file into memory before I look for pattern matches.
    Could someone help, please?

    Or use a BufferedInputStream and and array that's as big as the file, and in a loop, try to read as much as is left into that array at an offset equal to how much has been read so far.
    I still think this is probably not a good approach though.

  • Convert a line read from text file into string

    how to convert a line from text file into string?
    i know how to convert to numbers,
    private int  parseLine1(String line) {
              StringTokenizer tokenizer = new StringTokenizer(line);
                  value1 = Integer.valueOf(tokenizer.nextToken()).intValue();
                  value2 = Integer.valueOf(tokenizer.nextToken()).intValue();
                 return value1;
                     }but what about charactrs?

    ok, here is my problem, i have a file with a bunch of Xs in it but position function doesn't return a correct value, what's going wrong?
    private int positioni(){
           int i=0;
           int j=0;
           int b=0;
           String line="";
            while(line!= null){
                for(int a=0; a<line.length(); a++){
                    if(line.charAt(a)=='X'){
                        i=a;}
                b++;
                j=b;
                t=line.length();
                line=read(gridFileN);
           return i;
    private String read(String ggridFileN){
             TextStreamReader ggridFile = new TextStreamReader(ggridFileN);
             return ggridFile.readLine();
