IM having real problems with the PATH file on a SUN 220R running Solaris 9, when i log in as root all I have available is the .dtprofile, Ive read all over the place that you need to edit the .profile, but i cant find it.
I have the root user using sh, and another user using the bash, neither of them have a .profile
All this came about after a rebuild and now when trying to install samba the ./configure script looks for the gcc compiler. Ive downloaded this and also installed it from the Sun companion cd, but how to i make the system use it as default?
Please im tearing my hair out over this one!!!
For the .profile file, you actually nned to create one if you did not have one.
Try to do the command 'ls -la | more ' and check again. If you would like to
revise an existing one is in the /etc/skel, these are templates which you could used.
As for the gcc, check your path. use the command 'set' to see you present PATH.

let me try to explain this because this has happened in past and never found a way to resolve but i lived with it
now that I have a Sony A7R the problem is more serious
Firstly i take pride it making the picture happen all in camera, i use DRO lvl 5 to get enough light, like when i'm shooting at dusk. DRO its like doing HDR but in a single file, it lightens the darks. in my camera i'm happy with results
but when I upload them to lightroom, they come out near black.
allow me to explain
lets say I import 100 images
i double check my preferences and everything is UNCHECKED when it comes to importing options, there is no auto toning, nothing.
as the images import i see a preview in the thumbnail which looks fine.
i double click on one to enlarge it, hence leave grid view.
for a brief 1 or 2 seconds, i see the full image in all its glory but than lightroom does something funny, it darkens the image
one by one as it inspects each image, if it was a DRO image it makes it too dark.
to make this clear, the image is perfect as it was in the beginning but after a few seconds lightroom for some reason thinks it needs to correct it.
how to prevent lightroom from doing this, i want the image exactly as it is, why must lightroom apply a correction>?
i think it has to do something with interpreting the raw file and lightroom applies its own algorithm.
but here is what i dont get.....before lightroom makes the change i'm able to witness the picture exactly as it was taken and want it unchanged..
now i have to tweak each file or find a profile for it which is added work.
any ideas how to prevent lightroom from ruining my images and just leave them as they were when first detected...
there are 2 phases...one is when it originally imports and they look fine
second is scanning each image and applying some kind of toning which darkens it too much.

thing is, there is no DRO jpg to download from the camera
its only ARW. so my understanding is when i use DRO setting, the camera makes changes to the ARW than lightroom somehow reads this from the ARW.
but then sadly reverts it to no DRO settings.
because i notice if i take normal picture in raw mode its dark but if i apply dro to it, it comes out brighter, yet when i d/l the image from camera to lightroom, which is an ARW - there are no jpgs. lightroom decides to mess it up
so in reality there is no point in using DRO because when i upload it lightroom removes it.
is there a way to tell lightroom to preserve the jpg preview as it first sees it.
its just lame, picture appears perfect...than lightroom does something, than bam, its ruined,.
what do i need to do to prevent lightroom from ruining the image? if it was good in the first place. -
Error: There is a problem with the file and it cannot be copied
I've been trying to copy (and essentially move) the contents of an NTFS-formatted external HDD to my iMac's internal HDD so I can then format the external HDD to Mac OS Extended. However, when I simply try to drag and drop, I get an error during the transfer that states:
There is a problem with the file and it cannot be copied.
I tried a basic cp command in Terminal to copy all contents of the external HDD to a folder on my iMac's desktop, and found that while there were no errors, there were many individual files missing full chunks of data (ie. original file would be 4GB on my external HDD, but only 350MB on my desktop).
Any ideas on how I can successfully copy a large amount of data (approx. 170GB) from my external HDD to my internal HDD while avoiding this error, so I can ultimately format my external HDD to Mac OS Extended? ANY help is greatly appreciated.That's not a good error to see. It indicates something is very wrong. Pulled out of an old programming header file:

If Apple labelled it "bummers," they had a good reason! Unfortunately, that doesn't bode well for you.
Try running Disk Utility again. Keep repairing over and over until one of two things happens: 1) Disk Utility says no repair was needed, or 2) Disk Utility reports the same error in two sequential repair sessions and is unable to repair it both times.
If you hit the second case, or if you hit the first but still can't copy files, then you've got two basic options:
= Buy a third-party disk utility or two and try them. Try TechTool as a first choice.
= Recover what files you can and write the rest off as gone.
= Send your drive to a data recovery service and hope they can extract more than you can.
Of course, none of this is necessary if you have a backup of the contents of that hard drive. (If you don't, this is your learning experience. Once bitten, twice shy, so they say.) Also, regardless of the outcome, once you've got your data or have decided it's gone, you're going to want to wipe that drive completely clean. Reformat the drive with Disk Utility, then when it's done, select the drive in Disk Utility and hit command-i. (Don't select the new volume you just created on that drive, select the drive itself. Mine looks like "232.9 GB Hitachi ..." with the volume name indented underneath.) Look for an item that says S.M.A.R.T. Status, and if it doesn't say Verified, you might as well throw out the drive. Don't trust any more data to it.
If all appears safe, you can start moving data back onto it. But, as always, make sure you have a backup of everything! -
I have a Macbook Air (july 2012) with OS X 10.8.3 installed. I have dvds with .vob files and have Quicktime Version 10.2 (603.12). I can't play the DVDs. There are some features of QT that I like, e.g. precise frame selection and save as .png file-help. Am I missing some Apple software? I thought QT for Mountain Lion could convert the .vob files - is there some setting that I have missed?

Having trouble with wav files and sample rates
Hi ,I am having trouble with wav files and sample rates .I have been sent multiple projects on wav as the main instrumental ; I wish to record in 48.000kHz .Now comes the problem.When I try to change the project to 48k It seems to pitch up the track.I can't have them send the logic/project file as most have outboard synths,different plug ins etc.This particular case the producer has recorded the synth task in 41.000 kHz .My successful outcome would be to be able t create a project file in 48 kHz .And NOT pitch up whne I add the instrumenta wav file .Any help would be gratefully recieved,this is my first post so any mistakes I may have made go easy
You'll have to convert the actual synth audio file file that the producer gave you to 48kHz. You can do this in the audio Bin in Logic.

Problem with m3u files and Quicktime

I have made one update with Quicktime software (version 7.6.9 1680.9). The problem is that Quicktime player reproduces mp3 files but when I try to play m3u files the sound is very bad. It sounds like gargling.
For example: This files play ok:

It plays ok when the previous link is introduced as URL address in Quicktime player, but the corresponding m3u files sounds like gargling

I think there a problem with m3u files and Quicktime.
Tank you very much and best regards.I have discovered that when the URL is playing (with gargling sound) if I open the A/V controls in QT menus and I move the Jog Shuttle or the Speed level then the sound becomes good.
Yes! Great catch, ttfrank. I can replicate that too.
Interesting ... if (after getting the sound working properly again) you then pause play of the m3u, and start it again, you get the gargling/dalekish sound quality back again.

My MacBook will only turn on to a grey screen with a file and a question mark flashing on the screen
When I turn my MacBook on a grey screen with a file and question mark in the center of the screen flashing. What can I try to
get out of this screen?That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
Or if you are running 10.7 Lion, boot from the recovery partition (Command +R on boot) and use Disk Utility to repair your OS 10.7 partition.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead. -
CMS crash with core files and multiple report output generation

Our BOXIR3.1SP6FP2 env has recently started behaving weirdly by triggering multiple output to users inbox and email notification out of scheduled reports. Also we have noticed the CMS crash with core file (almost 4GB) generation at the time of multiple report output.
Most of the times, CMC crashes and recycles itself. At few times, CMS services alone went shut down.
OS details: RHEL 5.5, 32 GB RAM, 8 core processor on each of the clustered node, Oracle 10GR2.4 CMS DB server, 11GR2.4 oracle reporting DB server and oracle 11.1.0.6 client.

Below is the observation as part of troubleshooting:
1. CMS breaks at threshold of 3.9 G.
2. CMS DB sits in a different Linux server than BOE server.
3. All core files were generated by boe_cmsd process and are almost 4GB in size (same as max threshold which it breaks).
4. Shell script which I've added in the BOE servers shows that the CMS DB is available/connecting at the time of CMS crash.
5. SAP analysed the Core files and skeptical about the below lines.

NEED TO RECOVER A DATABASE USING RMAN with CONTROL FILE AND NO RMAN CATALOG, DISK FAILURE..

The disk failure caused our production data on the disk to be resotred with the backup data available and recovered through RMAN with cotrolfile , and no catalog DB is configured.
I had the restored the spfile and control file then recovered the database,
startup nomount;
RESTORE SPFILE FROM ' path ' ;
Shutdown immediate;
startup nomount
Restore controfile from autobackup;
restore database;
[AT POINT , A MESSAGE PROMPTED LIKE " failur of restored command - some targets not found" (thinking may be few archives are not found, i proceeded to incomeplete recovery of DB) ]
recover database;
Finished reocvery .
Now in the Grid control i see that 60 blocks of a particular datafile are corrupted and needs recovery. Do i need to get the data file resotred again and recover it or any simple way to recover this data file
When i perform the block recovery , it says recovery failed and when i run the data file recovery it succeeds. Please provide you inputs to recover the database as it is production BI database and pretty critical to our client.

Brain freeze with batch file and jar
My batch file located in the startup folder.

EXITthe error I get is "Could Not Find Main Class. Program will exit"
If I take the Set Path line out it works fine, but my customers will not have the JRE installed on their systems,so I set the path to the jre included with my app..
What am I missing or forgeting to do.

Moved the jar into the startup folder, added a manifest file and changed this line
javaw -cp C:\Program Files\My-App\Startup.jar; SrvcUtilTest

Creating DVD with PDF files and web links
Hi all, first I'd like to say that these forums are a big help. I've spent DAYS scouring through topics learning. Of course, I know this opens it up for someone to post a link to a thread where my question has already been answered. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find the specific help I need and would like to open a dialogue with experts.
I am creating a marketing DVD for a product. We produced a video for it, but the client also wants the audience to have access to a large amount of research in this specific field. This exists as PDF files and links to websites.
His previous Marketing CD was just that, a CD made with FileMaker and had the files and links and only worked in PC computers. I do not want to go back in that directions.
I want to make an informative DVD with the video and a few pages of selling points and cool tricks (I discovered multilayered menus working on this!) for those viewing on TV or Computer, and then an option for Computer users to click for more info.
How do I put PDF files on the disc and how do I put web links on there?

ByronDVDSP uses a tool called DVD@Access. It enables a user to link to URL and call such documents as pdfs. The problem is that its never was reliable - especially on the PC side of things.
There have been many of posts in the last 2 days about its use. Do a search and you'll see.
DVD was not designed with the web in mind - it was conceived long before that time. linking to "outside" documents requires a third party tool to take over.
Just beware! - in fact if your client came to me I would refuse to do the job. I've seen the problems that exist doing work like this especially if your distributing to a large audience with different OS sets ups. If one of the users has Vista you can forget about it working at all.
My suggestion would be to design a menu that tells the user the file paths to your pdfs or URLs on the disc. -
Having a problem with app files and fonts between OS
I work in a prepress department, and we are have issues with files that are coming from 10.4.11 to 10.5.8. The 10.4.11 is a power PC and the 10.5.8 is Intel. Fonts get corrupt and display as a unix file with 0 file size and application files like Quark loose there ID and come up as a document file. I think this has to do with the OS difference. Is there any way that this can be fixed???
Well we are having the the same problem with folders. Jobs that are made on a 10.4 Mac, sometimes you can't see the contents of the folder on a 10.5 Mac. And there is no pattern.
And if you take the contents out of the folder and put it loose using a 10.4 Mac, you can see it on a 10.5 Mac
Also if we put a .dfont on the end to the font using a 10.4 Mac, you can see the font on a 10.5 Mac.
This is all very strange. There are no patterns and no reason why one folder would work and the other does not. Just checking if there is something that could be causing a problem between the OS's.
