Rearranging clips in i movie

Is there any way of arranging your clips automatically so the go back in order after you have shuffleed them around?
Dan

I can't view your .mp4 videos, but the "Julius Crashing" plays OK. (..My son shot something similar in South Africa ..another fellow with a hover-mower on his back..)
"Editing"? ..What editing? ..It's just jump-cuts ..and the final edit cuts off the sound of the hover-mower too: one moment it's buzzing full pelt, then the video cuts to a different shot, and there's just sweet meadow silence. Is that really "editing".
Maybe what you want to ask is "How do I blend one shot into another without sudden jerks in picture and sound, which might be off-putting to people watching?"
So when he's hit the ground, halfway through the movie, I'd use a suitable "transition" to change to the shot of people surrounding him. There's not much of a selection which comes with the 'bare' iMovie HD (..I've got a selection which I've bought and downloaded from Slick/GeeThree..) so I'd suggest that the simplest and least draw-attention-to-itself-ish is a simple ..and quick, because we're watching action here.. Cross Dissolve.
Then for the next cut (..where the man with the trousers gets in the way of the camera..) another, slightly slower, Cross Dissolve.
Then, in place of the final straight cut, 'Extract' the audio from that next-to-last shot of the pilot undoing his helmet, so that you can slowly fade that audio down (..quite separately from any cut or video transition..) and then use another Cross Dissolve to the people around him.
A slowish audio fade lets the audience 'calm down' after the fright of the crash, and lets our heartbeat slow down for the final standing 'static' shot.
Sorry I can't comment on the others ..ahh: just Saved the linked file for number three, changed its suffix to be just .mp4 and now I can view it:
I like the shot from the moving vehicle, with the hover-mower flying behind (..wouldn't it have been nice to put a camera ON the hover-mower, so that you had some shots from the air?..) but all your cutting is still just straight cuts. The thing which provides some continuity between the shots, to 'smoo-oo-ooth' the transition between them, or to paste them together, is someone else's music (..and they don't get any credit.)
Like Dan's shots of helicopters, the sky's perfectly exposed, but the flyers are dark; too dark to see their faces. You really needed to have pointed the camera at a flyer, zoomed in, then set the camcorder's manual exposure to that setting, so then ..even if the sky came out a bit bleached.. you'd be able to see the people, their kites, the machines, etc, properly. Never just leave the exposure on "automatic" when you're going to have lots of sky in the picture! ..Everything else will come out too dark!
If you look for and download some other transitions, you could do with a "spin around" or "360-degree Twirl" or some such, which would go with those shots of flyers, especially with that kind of insistent music: spin one shot into another from time to time!
Or you could do a similar thing with a very fast "Twirl" that comes with iMovie. Then select all three clips: the part before the Twirl, the applied Twirl transition, and the part after the Twirl, choose File and Export, choose QuickTime and 'Full Quality' and tick the box 'Share selected clips only' and give that chunk a new name, such as "Twirl".
Then use File and Import, and import that same "Twirl" (..it'll have the suffix .dv..) back into iMovie. Then, back in the Timeline, delete the original Twirl transition which you applied between the two clips, and drag the two original clips to the Clips Pane on the side. Drag into the Timeline, in their place, the newly-imported "Twirl" sequence, which includes the transition.
You can now cut that sequence - complete with the Twirl transition - in the middle, after the 1st part has Twirled out to black. [..You couldn't cut the original transition; you can only cut it after it's been "baked" into a solid piece along with its intro and outro halves ..hence the Exporting and reimporting..]
Having cut it, Save everything. Now chop equal amounts off the end of the first half - as the picture's twirling away into the distance - and off the start of the second half - where it's twirling In from the distance. Drag those offcuts to the Clips Pane.
Now apply a short Cross Dissolve between those two remaining halves. That superimposes some of the Twirl OUT onto the Twirl IN, making a snappier transition between the clips, and in keeping with the feeling, or theme, of people whizzing about in the sky at mad angles.
[..I haven't watched the first one, as it's time to go out now (..to TollWood, if Karsten's lurking!)..]

  • Media / Icon View - rearrange clips?

    Apologies if this is posted multiple times - I'm new here and thought I posted but can't find it now
    Can I rearrange clips using Icon View in the Media window?  I thought I had read about doing it this way, but it doesn't seem to allow clips to be moved using the icons.  (It works in list view but not icon view)  Am I overlooking something or just doesn't work that way?
    Thanks!

    I strongly recommend "that guy's" books. He seems to know what he's talking about.
    I've been editing movies for decades (and shooting them too), have been doing digital video editing for at least a decade, and was even Director of Photography on an Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Award nominated film, many, many years ago. I own many of his books, and rely on them often. Cannot make a stronger rec. Yeah, "that guy" knows his "stuff."

  • How do you combine two or more movie clips into one movie clip in iMovie '09

    how do you combine two or more movie clips into one movie clip in iMovie '09

    First create an iMovie project. Then drag the clips (or portions of clips) that you need into the project.
    When finished, use the SHARE menu to share the project.

  • How can I move a clip from one movie to another

    How can I move a clip from one movie to another?

    If it's just a clip, you can simply go to the other project and Add Media/From Files and Folders.
    But if it's a part of your movie -- say a sequence of clips or a clip that's had effects added to it -- you technically can't cut and paste betweeen projects in Premiere Elements. However, some people have been able to do it using the third party program ClipMate, available online.

  • I made a movie in iMovie then deleted the clips in it. I have reimported the clips in an event with the same name as previously and some clips in the movie are still saying source slip missing even though they are there. What can I do?

    I made a movie in iMovie then deleted the clips in it. I have reimported the clips in an event with the same name as previously and some clips in the movie are still saying source slip missing even though they are there. Some clips are fine in the movie, but most are just black and when I hover over them, it says source clip missing. How to I fix this? Thank You

    I did that too, then I did a migration assistant to a new Mac and ALL of my movies have Source Clip Missing now, even though the original clips are still in the iPhoto Videos.  I can stand to re edit one or two projects, but not ALL.

  • Movie clip inside a movie clip

    Hi everybody,
    I'm creating a slideshow with Flash, like the  ones done with Powerpoint. I would like to create a movie clip inside  another movie clip, that is, say I have a clip called button1, and when I  click it, frame number 2 in this clip is displayed, and then more  information appears. Inside this frame 2, there are other clips, for  example an X button to close and return to frame number 1 in the clip  button1, as the image shows:
    What I have done is convert the button1 text into a movie  clip, and assign an action to it:
    on (press){
        gotoAndStop(2);
    When frame 2 is displayed, I would like to  click to the X-button to get back to frame number1, so what I've done  is, again, convert it into a movie clip and assign the following action:
    on (press){
        _root.gotoAndStop(1);
    But this doesn't work. I've been trying as  well changing other things, but no way... At first I thought it had  something to do with the _root or _parent, but now it looks as when  using gotoAndStop in the "parent" button (button1), no actions work for  the "child" buttons.
    I've loaded the fla and the swf files here, just in case  someone would like to check.
    Thank you very much in advance for your help.  I've been checking other posts, but apparently I couldn't find the  appropriate info.

    "_root" is only used to reference the very first level of your flash file. Right now you are telling flash to go to the second frame in your root timeline but you want to go to the second frame in your button1 timeline.
    Change the code that is on the X-button to
    on(press){
         gotoAndStop(1);
    Remove the "_root" and it should work.
    If it still doesn't work, make sure the button has an instance name of "button1" and use this code.
    on(press){
         _root.button1.gotoAndStop(1);
    This is using "_root.button1" as the 'address' of your movieclip and it wont matter where the code is.

  • Question about rearranging clips in the storyline

    I hope I can explain my question clearly:  I have a storyline with multiple connected clips.  I want to add a generator under a clip so that I have a black background.  In other words (and I don't know the propery terminology), I want to put a generator in and then take what is now the "main" clip and the clips connected to it and make all of them connected clips on top of the generator.  But, when I try to do this by dragging the clips around, I can't do it.  The main clip and the clips connected to it that I'm dragging around just end up going on the left or right side of the generator clip.
    How can I do this?  Is it possible?  I noticed that if I delete all of the connected clips from the main clip, I can move the main clip above the generator clip and have it become a connected clip.  But that presents a problem because I need all of the clips, and I've already gone to the trouble of syncing them.
    I also noticed that I can take the main clip and its connected clips and turn them into a compound clip and then connect it, but that complicates the editing for me.
    Thank you for any advice.

    Well, as far as why I want a black generator, I'm using a split screen effect and I want to put some titles (text) on 1/2 or 1/3 of the screen.  Maybe I don't need a generator to do that.  I'm still learning all of this.  I'm sure that if someone like you (someone with your experience) sat down and watched what I'm doing to achieve what I want, you'd have a million tips on how to do it better.  But I guess that's stuff I'll just have to pick up as I go along.
    I didn't know it was possible to put clips under the primary.  That certainly helps.

  • Markers on clips don't move with project when switching media drives

    Here's an odd one. I'm editing a project in Premiere Pro CS6 and in order to avoid carrying drives back and forth between two editing locations, I cloned the footage drive and have one duplicate drive in each location. I'll call them location A and B.
    I have no problem relinking clips when I move back and forth from location to location. That's all working great, as expected.
    When I am reviewing clips at edit location A, I've been placing a marker on the hero moments to make them easier to find later when editing. The strange (or perhaps perfectly normal) thing is that when I move to edit location B and relink the clips, all of my markers that I made at location A are gone.
    The same thing happens when creating markers on clips at location B. When I move to location A, the markers made at location A are there, but the new ones added at B are gone... until I return to location B.
    In other words, it seems like markers are not saved as part of the project, but are saved within each clip file. If that's true, what I'm experiencing would make sense. Even though I'm relinking the clips when I change edit locations, the markers are part of the footage files on each of my duplicate drives and do not move with me when I change locations.
    I just wanted to confirm this is "how premiere pro works," or see if there is a preference checkbox or workaround I'm not aware of. Maybe I've found a bug? If this is just how it is, I'll have to come up with an alternate way to mark footage I'm reviewing, or just move the drives with me when I move, which I'd love to avoid.
    Thanks for any thoughs on this anyone has.

    Wes, my deepest apoligies for not responding to your kind answer sooner. I had moved on, thinking it was just one of those things, until another editor colleague of mine, found my original question recently and emailed me to find out if there was a solution.
    It appears that even with Premiere Pro CC, copying the XMP sidecar files to the second media drive remains the answer. Sadly my editor friend did most of his pre-edit clip marking in one city and traveled several states away to begin the edit and when he arrived, all of his marks were, of course, not there.
    It would be great if somehow the metadata could be tied to the project, rather than the sidecar XMP files. Perhaps not technically feesible, but it would certainly make more sense from an editing standpoint to not have to be copying sidecar files every time you move to a edit location with duplicate media drives.
    I will most likely write a feature request to see if this can be achived in future versions of Premiere.
    Thanks again for your support and reply.

  • Taking clips from itunes movies and putting them into imovie

    I'm doing a school project and making a movie trailer and i need to take clips from a movie on my itunes and put it onto imovie so i can take clips from the movie. HELP PLEASE!!!

    How did the movie get into iTunes? Does it have digital rights copy protection? I guess you're not seeing the movie when you look in music in the iMovie media browser, is that right?

  • Add a clip to a movie in quicktime player

    how do I add a clip to a movie in qicktime player 10.1?

    I have no trouble when I try to do this.
    Make sure you haven't used the "Trim" feature before trying to add another file.

  • Should I export captured clips as Quicktime movies?

    Do I need to export my captured clips as Quicktime movies if I want to import them as source clips in other projects?
    I had been importing directly from the capture scratch folder, but this resulted in mono audio tracks, rather than stereo. Everything else looked fine...
    This problem has been driving me nuts...perhaps this is the explanation.

    I figured it out elsewhere.

  • Importing several clips from i-movie - then clips wont list

    So, I imported a series of small clips from i-MOVIE and I only get 1 sequence box with the total length of the clips. I thought the clips were supposed to list??

    ok, I dont know how to make this any simpler, maybe I am not a computer person. When I watch the on-line training video on this apple site, they show several ruff cut clips being exported from i-movie then opened in FCE4. When the file is opened in FCE4, it shows each sequence listed separate in the browser. So, say for example I have 4 clips of vacation footage: beach, airport, dinner, driving. They are not listed in FCE4 individually, but as 1 sequence in the browser. Thanks

  • Can one cut and paste an audio clip within a movie to use in another place?

    can one copy and paste an audio clip within a movie to use in another place?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

    If you are wanting to use the audio from clip A into clip B then try......
    First check that Advanced tools are enabled: iMovie>Preferences>General>Show Advanced Tools.
    Drag clip A from the Event UPON clip B in the Project. When you release the mouse you will get a pop up menue.
    Select Audio Only. Note the other options for another day!!!!
    You will get a green bar as Karsten mentions above ( move it , shorten it etc, etc.)
    Show Audio Waveform by selecting Blue Waveform Box ,bottom right of Project Window.
    You can adjust audio level from clip A and clip B to your requirements.You can set either to zero volume if you require.
    This may not be what you meant by "to use in another place "
    If you want just the audio to use outside of iMovie, try;
    With the required clip/clips only in the project> Share> Export Using Quicktime and in Export Select "Sound To AIFF. Save to desktop in the first instance so you can easily find it.

  • Rearranging Clips

    I'm using Premiere 9 and I'm struggling to find an efficient way to rearrange clips.  It seems like in both the scene view and timeline view if you have MANY (I have about 100) clips you can't see all the clips a once.  I don't want to scroll (and scroll and scroll) left and right.  Is there anyway to show multiple rows (in either timeline or scene)?  I don't need to see the monitor pane or the organize pane.  Ideally, I like to see the entire work area filled with MULTIPLE rows of the screen view.

    Press the \ key (above the Enter key on your keyboard) to see your entire project once.
    Although, if you've got a hundred clips on your timeline, you're probably not going to be able to see the individual clips very clearly.

  • Can I use the same media clips for multiple movies?

    What I'd like to do is import about 15 - 20 hours of camcorder footage, and use that to cut several different iMovies. These are home movies that cover about 5 years, so I'd like to make a Halloween movie using just the halloween clips, and then make a christmas movie, and a birthday movie, etc.
    Is there a way to do this without having every separate iMovie import its own clips? Or in other words can I have all of my imported media sharing by multiple iMovies? Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Anthony

    Welcome to the forum, Anthony.
    It's a good question, with no easy answers. Every few weeks someone asks a similar question here. They plan to import many hours of video into iMovie, then build multiple projects from that video. Some have already imported the video and are trying to deal with a huge, unmanageable project.
    iMovie isn't designed to share Media files -- the video files iMovie HD imports to the Media folder of the project package. (To look inside the package, Control-click on the package icon and choose "Show Package Contents" from the popUp menu.) Rather, iMovie HD requires each project has its own Media files.
    iMovie HD is a non-destructive editing environment, which means the entire Media file supporting a clip "sticks" to the clip -- the entire file. The file is never shortened. The file is discarded by iMovie only if you discard every clip associated with that file. In other words, stuff tends to stick around. And the stuff of 15-20 hours of video is large enough to fill a huge hard drive. So we're talking lots of stuff x 2 or 3 here, which is a lot of stuff.
    As you import the video, iMovie HD creates a new Media file at each scene break. Some of those files can be very large -- 12 GB if the hour has no breaks -- so before long your multiple projects are consuming huge amounts of disk space. Although you can Copy and Paste clips between projects, doing so duplicates the entire source file of the clip. So a 20 second clip that's part of a 4 GB Media file that you Copy from Project A to Project B now consumes an ADDITIONAL 4 GB of disk space in Project B.
    When projects reach huge, many users give up in frustration. They've invested lots of time accumulating the video, but they have so much stuff they don't know what to do with it. And sometimes the project size causes iMovie to choke.
    Everything is a lot easier if you plan ahead. Plan WAY ahead. Consider importing just the video you need for each of the (small) projects. Finish one project at a time, then move on to the next one.
    The trick is to view all the video before you begin, and make an index of what video you want to keep, what you want to discard, and what video goes in each (small) project. Use the timecode of your camera to log the location(s) in your index. (If you're using iMovie to view the video in the camera, you might want to take screen captures.)
    When you are done making the index, you are ready to build the Halloween project. Import the Halloween chunks from all the tapes to a Halloween project, edit it, and burn it to a DVD, export it back to a new "Halloween" camcorder tape, or do whatever you want with it.
    Don't miss that if you import all the Halloween clips to a project, you can export that project back to a new tape in the camcorder. The clips will (usually) retain their clip-ness, so when you re-import that tape to a project the clips will come back as discrete clips. Tapes can be useful place to store clips temporarily, or as permanent vault organized by topic.
    Good luck with your project. It'll be fun, but it's going to take a while. Relax, take your time, and enjoy it.
