Rebuild standby database

Good morning,
I am stuck with my rebuild standby now. I am not sure what is wrong with what I am doing. My production database is 2 nodes RAC database and the db version is 10.2.0.4 using ASM (10.2.0.4) on Sun servers SunOS 5.10. The standby is in SunOS 5.10 and single node database. In this server we also have 3 other databases so all 4 databases share the same ASM in this server. Recently we upgraded the ASM home and other databases home from 10.2.0.4 to 10.2.0.5. Only this standby home stays in 10.2.0.4. We also use OMF and all database files are in ASM and archive logs are in ASM as well. The backups are in files system. After I upgrade the ASM I forgot bring up the standby instance/listener so it falls behind on the archive logs applying process. I am now trying to rebuild this standby. The first two times failed due to diskgroup space exhausted. So I deleted old standby data files from ASM. Then I got ORA-15055: unable to connect to ASM instance & ORA-00020: maximum number of processes () exceeded. I increased the processes parameter for ASM from 40 to 85. The last time refresh I got the following errors and I googled these errors online but have not got any useful info yet. Have anybody experienced this before?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help!

I do believe the version could be causing your issue. I have always used the exact same version without issue.
I setup my standby for dup as follows:
Same directory structure including the flash area.
I copy the primary password file to the same directory on the standby.
I defer the primary :
alter system set log_archive_dest_state_2=defer;
I create a temp int file for the standby with these set (I'm using Oracle 11)
db_name
control_files
db_recovery_file_dest
db_recovery_file_dest_size
compatible
db_block_size
undo_tablespace
undo_management
undo_retention
I backup the primary using
RUN {
allocate channel d1 type disk;
backup format '/u01/backups/PRIMARY/df_t%t_s%s_p%p' database;
sql 'alter system archive log current';
backup format '/u01/backups/PRIMARY/al_t%t_s%s_p%p' archivelog all;
backup current controlfile for standby format '/u01/backups/PRIMARY/sb_t%t_s%s_p%p';
release channel d1;
I move the current days archive and this backup to the standby
I start the standby use the temp init
startup nomount pfile='/u01/app/oracle/admin/PRIMARY/pfile/init.ora';
And I dupicate as follows:
rman target sys/password@PRIMARY auxiliary /
run {
allocate channel C1 device type disk;
allocate auxiliary channel C2 device type disk;
duplicate target database for standby nofilenamecheck;
Assuming this flys I copy a pfile version of the primary init over and change it for standby and then create a new spfile if needed.
Finally I enable
alter system set log_archive_dest_state_2=enable;
And start redo apply on the standby and test

    Hi all,
    I am working on oracle 10g EE(10.2.0.4).I am having a very difficult database switchover case in my hand.
    1.> There are two database .one primary(prim) and another standby(standby).
    2.> Initially both of them was configured as oracle data guard, where prim was primary and standby was standby using rman .(RMAN>duplicate target database for
    standby dorecover).
    3.>But the rate of generation of archivelog is very high( 20 archivelog per hour with 200mb each).
    4.> So automatic shipping of archivelog has been disabled from primary.(log_archive_dest_state_2=defer and nullifying the value of log_archive_dest_2).
    5> Now after a period of time archived logs are shipped to dr site manually and applied manually.(alter database recover automatic standby database;)
    6.> Now there is a hardware problem occured at primary..it will take 72 hours to come up.
    How can i use standby database as primary for that 72 hour.As archive log apply is manually done and parameters are being changed,can i switch over these two?
    Is it possible to switchover and switch back these two database with such a configuration?

    As of now you can perform failover your standby to primary database. you should have flashaback enabled, so you have to create a restore point.
    Then it can be opened in read & write mode, So once you finished again you can go back to that point.
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/manage_ps.htm#i1017111
    The above case applicable if you ready to loose, But it doesnt make sense. But in your case this doesnt work. Because once you start use of Standby as primary, there would be live/production data, which you need very much.
    So there is lot of work to do.
    You have to rebuild standby database and then switchover back to same location. So its a little trip work.
    Have you enabled Dataguard Broker ?

  • RAC Standby Database rebuild

    Hi
    Current 10.2.0.4 Setup is with Dataguard Broker (Unix/No OEM Setup):
    Rac Primary 2node cluster
    Rac Standby 2node cluster
    The rac Standby Database are going to be opened read/write.
    Then will require a rebuild of standby ie delete db files and duplicate db using rman
    1) My questions is how do I rebuild of a rac standby database with an existing enabled dg broker?
    2) Are there any documentation on the steps to follow.
    3) Should the dg broker config be dropped or just disabled and if so at which stage?
    Config on Rac primary should be kept to a minimum as its being used so no outage expected here.
    Regards
    Me

    Have you given any thought to using flashback (depending on how long your standby will be open for read/write)? You could (before you open read/write) copy your dr*.dat files (broker config files), stop the broker and create a guarenteed restore point. After you have finished and ready to convert back to standby you would flashback your database to the restore point, convert back to a physical standby, restart the broker and shutdown. Restore the dr*.dat files to their location and then startup the standby. From there it should fetch the logs from the time the broker was down and catch back up.
    If you would rather rebuild, again you would need to take the broker out of the equation and use RMAN to create a clone for standby and then once in place you would reconfigure the broker (may be able to just restore the dr*.dat files from before the open operation but unsure.

  • Standby database can't work !!!

    hi,
    i set up a standby db for my production db .
    However, below error occurs while i perform "recovery managed standby database" :
    ORA-00283: recovery session canceled due to
    errors
    ORA-16016: archived log for thread 1
    sequence# 436 unavailable
    i tried to fix the problem with the following method:
    1) apply "alter system archive log current"
    on production server;
    2) download the log 436 to standby host;
    3) recover standby database until the time
    generated the log 436;
    4) re-apply the command;
    BUT, this time it asked for log 437 !!!!!!!!
    can anybody help ???
    Thanks a lot
    stephen

    If the standby hasn't work for years, it's not quite possible to sync it with primary. Of course if you have all the archive logs in these years, you could but it's not as efficient and fast as rebuilding it.
    Follow the Oracle doc to build a new standby.
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/A87860_01/doc/server.817/a76995/toc.htm
    btw, it's time to plan upgrade your server.

  • Creating standby database using data guard.

    Current Env:
    Oracle 11.2.0.1
    ASM
    Size 1.7T and growing.
    I'm rebuilding a standby database and need to use rman because of a few factors. In the past, I did a file copy create a standby control file config init.ora and it always worked.
    We have a database and had the stanby build; but someone issued a flashback and corrupted the standby database.
    Because of the size 1.7T and growing and we are now using ASM.
    My research is only showing building standby through rman using dupicate database command.
    I would like to copy the cold backup to a external drive and ship it to the standby site where I'll do the restore. This is because of time and bandwith required to rebuild the standby will interfere with operaitions for the period the files are being copied.
    So what would be the high level steps.
    1) get the cold backup
    2) create the standby control file
    3) ship the data via corrier
    4) restore the database
    5) and this is where i'm not sure. recover the standby control file - but during the restore of the database the "normal" control file will open and perhaps do a checkpoint. therefore the standby controlfile will be usless.
    6) recover the standby database.
    Has anyone accomplished this?
    As much specifics will be helpful. This system is operational and needs to be done right the first time.
    thanks,
    -Rob

    Thank you.
    1) I'm going to off load the cold backup to an external drive and have a courier take it to the DR site.
    Why, we are replicating the SAN over to the DR site. When SAN replication backs up Oracle becomes non-responsive. Therefore; sending the data over the pipe is not an option for the standby rebuild. Yea' that's the easy way to do it. But this system is operational and critical to operations; so we will not risk saturating the pipe for any period of time. The pipe got saturated one time and it was not pretty.
    2) I'm running the test in my lab to make sure I can create the standby database using the cold backup and rman.
    3) In the past it was easy; I got a cold backup of the data files using the same ksh scripts that have been working for 20 years. Copy the files over to the standby site, and put it into managed recovery. This technique has been working fine sense Oracle 8i days. ASM through a huge monkey wrench in the ksh script backup and now I'm forced to use rman. Hey, I'm told it's an okay product but when it comes to backups I never get fancy; that just makes things more complicated. Okay I wont complain about asm anymore, i guess there is an advantage in there somewhere.

  • Test physical standby database in dataguard

    Hi all,
    I had a successfull dataguard implementation for oracle 9r2.
    Primary and standby databases are on different nodes, logs from primay are shipping and applying to physical standby database successfully.
    As these database are for oracle 11i ebs, so for testing dataguard status i had created a table manually having columns date and remarks. Periodically i insert few records in this table in primary database and then chek this tabel in standby database (by opening in read only mode).
    Now i want to test physical standby database with applications tier  but don't want to disturb origional primary database.
    as these are the normal switchover steps
    1) at primary db
    ALTER DATABASE COMMIT TO SWITCHOVER TO PHYSICAL STANDBY WITH SESSION SHUTDOWN;
    2) at standby
    ALTER DATABASE COMMIT TO SWITCHOVER TO PRIMARY;
    3) at primary, now this will be the stand by database
    SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE;
    STARTUP MOUNT;
    4) at standby, now this will be the primary database
    SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE;
    STARTUP
    My concern is if i skip step 1 and 3 and only execute step 2 and 4, will that be applicable for my requirement, or there is some other way to achieve this goal.
    Regards,
    Ken

    To avoid touching the primary production DB, you may try to use the following command on your standby database side:
    alter database activate standby database;
    This will turn your standby database to primary database, however the log will be reset and this means you will need to rebuild your DR.
    Another way is to use flash back feature on your standby database, activate it and revert back to the flashback point when the DR testing is done.

  • Standby database Archive log destination confusion

    Hi All,
    I need your help here..
    This is the first time that this situation is arising. We had sync issues in the oracle 10g standby database prior to this archive log destination confusion.So we rebuilt the standby to overcome this sync issue. But ever since then the archive logs in the standby database are moving to two different locations.
    The spfile entries are provided below:
    *.log_archive_dest_1='LOCATION=/m99/oradata/MARDB/archive/'
    *.standby_archive_dest='/m99/oradata/MARDB/standby'
    Prior to rebuilding the standby databases the archive logs were moving to /m99/oradata/MARDB/archive/ location which is the correct location. But now the archive logs are moving to both /m99/oradata/MARDB/archive/ and /m99/oradata/MARDB/standby location, with the majority of them moving to /m99/oradata/MARDB/standby location. This is pretty unusual.
    The archives in the production are moving to /m99/oradata/MARDB/archive/ location itself.
    Could you kindly help me overcome this issue.
    Regards,
    Dan

    Hi Anurag,
    Thank you for update.
    Prior to rebuilding the standby database the standby_archive_dest was set as it is. No modifications were made to the archive destination locations.
    The primary and standby databases are on different servers and dataguard is used to transfer the files.
    I wanted to highlight one more point here, The archive locations are similar to the ones i mentioned for the other stndby databases. But the archive logs are moving only to /archive location and not to the /standby location.

  • Standby database recovery problems....

    HP-UX 11.23
    oracle 10.2.0.2
    I know that this has been discussed quite a bit. I've spent a number of hours on this forum alone today just reading through the search hits. I've tried some of the 'tricks' that have been described in the threads. But I'm still getting the same error....
    My standby database lost connectivity with my primary, and stopped receiving logs. I got no notification, because my scripts were not set up to catch this event...
    The retention policy on my primary is 30 days of archive logs. After that, they are deleted. (I don't agree with it, but not my call)
    The standby got more than 30 days out of sync, so I decided to just refresh the whole standby.
    Since cold backups are not an option, I did an alter system checkpoint to flush all archive logs. Then I issued a complete hot backup.
    Once completed, I went ahead and created a fresh standby control file, as well as a fresh backup control file. In that exact order.
    I transferred all db files, archive logs, and control files over to the standby.
    I ran the commands:
    startup nomount;
    (SUCCESSFUL)
    alter database mount standby database;
    (SUCCESSFUL)
    recover standby database;
    I let it run through all the archive log files until it errored saying it couldn't find "X" file being the next sequence that wasn't in the directory. Which to my understanding, is normal...time to quit recovery.
    When I entered cancel, I get the following error.
    Specify log: {<RET>=suggested | filename | AUTO | CANCEL}
    ORA-00279: change 7313561157126 generated at 12/17/2008 19:01:02 needed for

    ORA-00278: log file '/oraarch/swesc/1_13728_640853326.arc' no longer needed for
    this recovery
    Specify log: {<RET>=suggested | filename | AUTO | CANCEL}
    CANCEL
    ORA-01547: warning: RECOVER succeeded but OPEN RESETLOGS would get error below
    ORA-01152: file 1 was not restored from a sufficiently old backup
    ORA-01110: data file 1: '/ora1/oradata/peregrine/system01.dbf'
    So my understanding of this is that it means that you still need to apply logs.
    So I grabbed the logs that had been auto created during the time that I was rebuilding everything and applied them.
    Same errors.
    I'm at a loss here. How can it still be out of sync? Is there a way to force it to a specific sequence so that I can successfully open it and then shut it down to complete the sequence?
    Thanks.

    Thanks OrionNet. Great info!!
    Here is the response.

    I thought that in a primary/standby scenario, thiat this action would automatically shut down the primary.  I can't have that.

  • SECURITY PATCH ON STANDBY DATABASE AND PRIMARY DATABASE

    I have a question on applying CPU on standby and primary database
    I have a standby database on machine2 and primary on machine1
    I applied a CPU patch on the Oracle Home of Standby database and
    did not run the catcpu.sql as standbydatabase is in mount state.
    Now i am going to apply the CPU patch on primary database.
    What i need to confirm is that after i apply the patch on primary database oracle home
    and run the cat cpu.sql on that do i have to do anything on the standby database
    for instance rebuilding it or something or the change would be shipped to the standby
    server automatically.
    The purpose is to have the primary and standby database on the same patch level
    in case of a failover
    Please let me know asap

    Any one has any idea on this. Any ideas would be appreciated

  • Cannot Clear Critical Alert for Physical Standby Databases

    10.2.0.4.0 Grid Control monitoring 10.2.0.4.0 databases and standby databases with 10.2.0.4.0 agents.
    The standby databases are running on Xen guests. The O/S is Red Hat 4 Advanced Server.
    I had a failure of Xen guest on Saturday that caused me to have to rebuild the standby servers. EM Grid Control successfully verifies the configurations and the status is normal for both physical standby databases. (A rebuilt logical standby database shows no alerts.)
    Grid Control database targets page shows a single critical alert for each physical standby database. The alert is for "number of missing media files is 4". The metric graph shows the count as 0 since before the rebuilds. I cannot clear the alerts from the Critical Alerts page. Grid Control reports "The selected alert(s) cannot be manually cleared. They will clear automatically once the metric is no longer in a critical or warning state.".
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Ray Westphal

    Thanks for the reply Anthony.
    The result of the query on both standby databases is '0'. The metric graph also shows the value at '0' since before rebuilds.
    And the OMS db and agents have been reset several times since I posted this.

  • Manual Standby Database not in sync with missing archivelogs

    Hello,
    OS: Solaris
    DB: Oracle 11.2.0.1 EE
    Not Using ASM or RAC
    I have a Production database that is in archivelog mode and a Standby DR server.
    Both servers (Prod, Standby) have exact same structure and db name/version.
    We manually scp archive logs and recover them to a manual standby database via SQL Scripts "cron". (I.E. set autorecovery on; recover standby database;)
    We recently got out of sync with our log files and have not been applying them to the standby. As part of Prod Maintenance, these log files were deleted and are not available anymore.
    I've tried several ways to "rebuild" our standby database. I have tried to Shutdown prod, backup all the db files and scp them to standby, re-create standby controlfile and startup mount and recover standby.
    Every time I try to apply a new archive log via recover standby, these are the errors:

    ORA-01152: file 1 was not restored from a sufficiently old backup
    ORA-01110: data file 1: '/oradevices/PROD/oraPRODsystem1.dbf'
    When I check v$log_history, the new logs have not been applied.
    I've also tried the "Restore from incremental backup via SCN" method with same results.
    Is there a way to re-create the standby clean and ensure that the log chain that is currently broken gets fixed or reset?
    I would eventually like to get DataGuard in here, but that's not the case at the moment.
    Thanks for your suggestions.

    if you are using the cold backup to create the standby database, Check that have you followed the following steps or not.
    1. remove
    all the datafiles and controlfiles from the standby database.
    2. Create a new standby controlfile of the production for standby using the following cmd
    'alter database create standby controlfile as 'Location';'
    3. move the new controlfile to standby database server location as specified in initialization parameter file.
    4. Restore all the datafiles to its appropriate loaction which was taken through cold backup.
    5. startup nomount
    6. alter database mount standby database;
    7. recover standby database.
    scp the archive log sequence that is asked by the database, from production.
    You can try this steps.

  • Rebuild Standby  in  9i

    Oracle 9i
    Sun Solaris
    Hi
    I need to rebuild one physical standby database from primary. Actually the primary itself was rebuilt using standby database. But instead of opening in NORESETLOGS it was opened in RESETLOGS.
    So primary and standby were again out of sync.
    I am presently copying datafiles from primary location to standby location.
    Is the following procedure correct ?
    (1) Put all tablespaces in primary in BEGIN BEACKUP.
    (2) Copy all datafiles to standby location . Both standby and primary datafiles are in the identically named locations. So no need to change any db_file_name_convert parameter etc.
    (3) After copying is done, create a standby controlfile from primary and move to standby location and edit init file to indicate this new location and new name of controlfile
    (4) Startup standby database using this new init file.
    (5) Start recovery. ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE DISCONNECT FROM SESSION.
    Is this the correct procedure ? Or Am I making any mistakes regarding standby log files and online log files.

    I recreated the standby database now. But the following is happening. sequence 1 is not applied but all the rest of sequence from 2 to 10 are applied. How is this possible ?
    Shouldn't the sequences be applied one after the other ?
    Does this mean standby is in sync with primary or not ?

  • Standby database not working after reinstallation of oracle in primary DB

    Hello All,
    Initially I had setup primary database (DB1) and Standby database (DB2), for test environment.
    In DB1 I had got ORA-600 error. So, after I researched, I came to know that I need to apply some patches. But I reinstalled oracle in DB1. And the problem was solved in DB1.
    After that, I issued the following commands in DB2, but I got error
    SQL>SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE;
    ORA-01034: Oracle not available
    ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist
    SQL>STARTUP MOUNT;
    ORA-27102: out of memoryNow, I mean to say, both DB1 and DB2 are independent.
    Also, DB2 is not active since 2 months
    DB1 is working fine.
    Please guide me with procedure, how to configure DB2 for the current DB1

    Hello;
    After two months I would rebuild.
    If you are on Oracle 11 you can use RMAN to do this quickly.
    Here's a few short notes :
    http://www.visi.com/~mseberg/duprman2.html
    http://www.visi.com/~mseberg/standby_creation_from_active_database_using_rman.html
    Can you post your full oracle version and Primary database size?
    If you rebuild I would remove all the data files from the Standby, recopy the password file from the Primary to the Standby and double my tnsnames.ora and listener.ora on both servers.
    Best Regards
    mseberg
