Recommended method to deploy apps in the enterprise

I have a Mac server configured with Profile Manager. My users at this point log into their iMacs with their Active Directory credentials. Classroom laptops use AD credentials as well, and the rest of the laptops (1/3 of all Macs on our site) have stand-alone accounts on the local machines.
We've been messing with VPP up to this point, but honestly I'm not impressed with the way it works with OSX devices. I can enroll a machine into Profile Manager via trust certificate and the management profile. This works fine, and I can group the machines in logical order. According to the documentation, I should be able to deploy apps to the workstations themselves (independent of who is using it), but so far it doesn't seem to work like that.
With a free VPP app, such as Garageband, in Profile Manager, I can only see where I can associate it with a user or user-group. I see two options with this. First, we use a common app-store credential to associate with the VPP apps. This seems like a poor option since a user wouldn't necessarily know the password to this account, and as soon as the app has an update, they are going to call us to login as the common app-store credential that owns the VPP app. Second, we associate the app to a user him/herself and let them do the installing or updating. This also assumes that our users sign up for an app-store account if they don't already have one (kind of weak, IMO).
With these two, any common area/lab machines would obviously need a shared admin accessible VPP app-store ID, but with user-specific machines, I see it the other way. If I could target all of these machines without involving the users, that would be optimal. Given these three options (target user, target shared app-store account with manual admin intervention on each machine, target machine independently of a user), what do you all recommend?

I will give my .02 on this topic.  I hope this helps.
App distribution for Apps from the AppStore is a tricky mine field.  The new VPP program is a step in the right direction and for many businesses it is a dream come true (no more redemption codes, transfer of assets, European Union tax issues, I can go on...).  However, I will agree with you in regards that education does not benefit as much, especially when (1) the students do not have an Apple ID, (2) the devices are not deployed in the one-to-one model, and (3) users are not permitted to alter machine configurations.
VPP for enterprise is a good thing, provided your organization is willing to allow user's the freedom to add content (an use Apple IDs).  The way it works is as follows.
• You enroll in the VPP program
• You purchase apps/books in bulk through the app store
• You configure your MDM to participate in the VPP
• You invite your users using an email or via push notification if devices are already enrolled
• When the user gets the invite, the user uses her own Apple ID to associate their App Store catalog with your enterprise App Store catalog (this all happens on Apple's servers)
• The enterprise does not care nor does it need to know which Apple ID the user used.  This is irrelevant to the organization.
• You then assign the apps and books to the users through your MDM
• The user now sees this content in their App Store from their device
• If the user leaves the organization, you can remove the app from the user and you recall the seat into the available pool.
• The App remains on the device for 30 days I believe and the user (if this is a personal device and they still have it after being removed from the program) will be prompted to purchase the app (books are transferred - you can not pull them back).
So, all that being said, you are not deploying to an enterprise and you are not deploying to dedicated devices.  I suspect that some of your users may also be too young to have an Apple ID.  So while I still recommend that you participate in the VPP to ensure software compliance, the reality is that you are likely going to use a single Apple ID to download the software.  This will be included in a master build when imaging and prepping machines.  If there are updates, you will download the update onto a build machine and use tools like ARD, JAMF, Deploy Studio, etc to push the app out to your fleet of machines.  Keep in mind that updates from the App store are full versions and they are self contained bundles.  Also, turn off all software update notifications on the workstations to keep users from realizing updates are available.
I am a firm believer that schools should not apply updates to machines between September and June unless it is a tested security patch.  The risk of impacting the educational process is too great.  Look no further than the dramatic changing in the iLife and iWork tools.  Changing mid year can cause entire curricula to be disrupted.  There is no deeper wrath than that of a school matriarch dressing you down because you put out software that does not match her lesson plans.
Ok, I am done on the soap box.  Hope this helped.  My suggestion again is stick with the VPP for compliance reasons but use distro tools to push the updated/new apps out to machines as needed.  This allows you to continue to use a single Apple ID, the account information is obscured from the user, and all updates happen via a distro push, avoiding touching each machine.

  • Deploying Muse in the Enterprise

I am trying to deploy Muse in a busy College. I have followed the instructions Deploying Muse in the Enterprise but it only works for the first user. When another user logs in to the Mac and tries to use Muse they receive a message that they do not have a subscription. Applying the prov.xml file again solves this and the user can then use Muse. But, as soon as another user logs in the problem occurs again. IS there a way to avoid having to apply the prov.xml file every time a new user logs in?

    Hi reboscar,
Please try applying Admin priviledges on the Adobe Folder also make the Admin as Owner on these folders.
    /Library/Application Support/
    ~/Library/Application Support/
This should allow the Computer to retain the licensing information.
Please let us know if it helps.

  • Would you recommend installing and creating apps in the apex install schema

Would you recommend installing and creating apps in the apex install schema for e.g. apex_040100? Or would you rather a separate tablespace be used for the application objects? In addition to this we are integrating it with Oracle EBS? Are there any industry best practices for creating tablespaces and schemas for apex applications?

A BIG NO!!!, you should be using separate schema's

  • What is the best way to deploy Flash in the Enterprise?

We would like to deploy Flash Player in our corporate environment.
Users are NOT administrators of their local machines, so just installing it on the image and leaving it is not an option.
Telling users not to click the large Adobe Flash Player has an update splash screen is also not an option.
    1) How do you install Flash Player in an Enterprise environment?
Please include answer with a guided installation document, as the SCUP document is not end-to-end.
    2) How do you disable Flash Player update notifications?
    Please advise,
    Andy

    Hi,
Thanks for this, but I am looking for a enterprise class solution: i.e. installing hundres of machines with automation and reporting.  We are already aware of the MSI, but the automatic installation recently started failing since we migrated to Windows 7 and users are non-admins.  We also plan on keeping UAC turned on, so running the MSI with the SYSTEM account in a script fails.
Again, we are looking for an end-to-end solution, possibly using SCCM and SCUP.  In essence, documentation and web chatter points to being able to:
    1) automatically have SCUP poll Adobe.com for updates
    2) automatically have SCUP publish it to SCCM when available
    3) push it out to WSUS as an update
    4) clients automatically update it as part of Windows Update.
I have the bits and pieces, but have failed putting it all together.
I know I am not the only person administrating a large company and uses Flash.... help!

  • Deploy Apps to the Device on multiple Macs

I'm currently enrolled in the iOS Developer Program and I'm able to run and test apps that I create directly in my iPhone. I recently bought a new MacBook and I wanted to know if I'm able to deploy my apps on both machines. I couldn't figure out a way to do it so far...

My Payment Method That Is On Fill Is Correct And My Security Code Is Correct You All Are Telling Me That It Is Invaild And I Can Not Download No Free Apps From The Apps Store!!!!!!!!

    The short answer is no.
Unless you are selling the app via the Enterprise Deployment option, everyone has to download via their own iTunes account ID. Yes, iTunes can be used by multiple IDs but this makes it very messy to resolve later.
What kind of app is this? Which Expo? If an Expo for selling apps has poor Internet connection I would question the validity of using such an expo in the first place.

  • Database Development and Creating Objects in the Enterprise

    Hello Everyone,
I have found myself filling the role of DB Developer for a DataMart project in a large enterprise. We are looking at replicating and consolidating multiple schemas in near real-time into an ODS for Reporting and Data Integration purposes. I did a POC locally in DEV to create Materialized Views for this purpose. It seems to work fine, I've got them on Fast Refresh, added a unique identifier etc.
The DBA stated I was granted the Priv to create the MVIEWS bc our vendor requires more PRIVS than is normally allowed for other apps in the Enterprise and it was only done on our server. Now I requested to try the same thing, however on the remote ODS DB over DBLinks. He stated creating objects on the ODS is a 'bad idea' and not allowed without engaging the broader DB group, even for DEv purposes. He also stated that MOST enterprises don't allow creating objects, and only allow DML. Problem is, once we engage that group it could add significant time and money to the project. Which seems silly as I just want to see if it's a feasible option.
Any thoughts on this? Can anyone share experiences regarding what is and is not allowed at the DB level strictly for DEV purposes and not on PROD?
    Thanks,
    PRAJNA

Thanks for the input jgarry. It does seem they are treating DEV like PROD in this case. Which has the potential to hamper innovation and new ways of doing things, especially in an aging IT environment where we might be stuck in our ways of doing things. It also sounds a bit general and not necessarily the case that 'most companies also don't allow this sort of thing'. I haven't worked in enough shops to say one way or the other however.
Yes, creating a local DBLink would be an option, but I wanted to test this method running across two physical servers ideally. Worth a try though.

  • How to bind an IIS to the enterprise portal installed on a linux machine

    Dear all,
I am very new to the topic of Enterprise Portal.
Our intention is, to develop .NET IViews and deploy them in the Enterprise Portal.
The Enterprise Portal Server is set up on a linux machine.
The Guy who did install the Portal Server, has no idea how to "integrate" the Microsoft IIS to the Portal.
After deploying my .net Component, i tried to view this component in the portal (by right clicking the mouse on the Component in in the .NET Solutions Explorer).
This gives me the following error:
    Portal Runtime Error
An exception occured while processing a request for:
    iView:N/A
    Component Name: N/A
Could not find portal application com.sap.portal.dotnet.framework.
    Exception id: 02:06.......
See the details for the exception ID in the log file
I think that this has something in common with integrating the IIS on the Linux Machine, and maybe additionaly installing the pdk.net on the IIS webserver machine which should be used.
    Thank you for your help.
    Regards

    Hi,
Welcome to the world of Enterprise portal
Seems to me like you are trying to use the PDK for .NET. If so - Please read the overview section in the documentation to get a general idea of how it works (for example - IIS is not used at all!).
See the Visual Studio integrated help or click this https://media.sdn.sap.com/html/submitted_docs/dotnet/index.htm
there go to "Getting Started" and mostly "Overview".
Anyway, It seems like the problem is that you didn't deploy the 2 required SDA's to the portal. You should also take a look at the "installation and configuration" guide. Download it here: https://www.sdn.sap.com/sdn/developerareas/dotnet.sdn?contenttype=url&content=/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/documents/a1-8-4/pdk for .net administrator guides.zip
    Good luck,
    Ofer

  • Can i use 2 methods to deploy icon files in Oracle IDS?

    Dear all,
I'm using Oracle 9IDS(Forms) and i'm trying to use 2 methods to deploy icon file:
-In development phase, i use defaul.icon.path and defaul.icon.extension in registry.dat file and imagebase=documentbase. My icon are well deploy when i run application from form builder.
-In deployment phase, on the same plateform, i use jar file following these steps:
1- I store jar file in same directory with all runtime files(fmx, mmx, etc.)
2- i create a virtual path(/forms90/Tel/) to map with this directory
3- in formsweb.cfg, i put the following line:
    [myapp]
    imagebase=codebase
    archive_jini=f90all_jinit.jar,/forms90/Tel/images.jar
When i call my application directly (http://localhost:8889/forms90/f90servlet?config=myapp),
    icons don't appear.
I would like to know, what's wrong? It's possible to use theses both methods for deploy icons on the same plateform?
    Thank u for your help

    Hi Franck,
I thank that red correctly the document(how deploy icon on web). But that isn't the matter.I update my formsweb.cfg as you advise me
    [myapp]
    archive_jini=...,/forms90/images.jar
    imagebase=codebase
Icon don't appear at runtine while other gif files(splashscreen, logo) appear.Notice these others gif files are compressed in the same jar file. Notice also, that when i use default.icon.path parameter in registry.dat file, icons are well deployed.
    It's incomprehensible.
    Thanks you for your help!

How can i enforce the server to use url-rewriting ..because in the clinet i
disabled my cookies but still the request has attribute saying that
requestIsCookie set as true. and if i use url rewriting is it not the job of the
server while rendering the jsp to see such that all the urls should be encoded ..........You don't "enforce the server to use url-rewriting". And you don't disable cookiees in the client.
    1) You can't rely on the client having cookies disabled. You can only ask them to, and why should they? I wouldn't.
    2) You need to find the server setting for whatever server you use that allows you to disable it setting session cookies from the server side. Tomcat can, I believe, but I don't know where this setting is offhand. Read the documentation.
    3) As for URL-rewriting, the server cannot do this for you automatically. Taglibs that generate URLs should handle this automatically, otherwise, that's a serious flaw in the tag. But regular links in a page, you have to call response.encodeURL(theURL) on the URL for the link everywhere you need the session to follow.
    <a href="<%= response.encodeURL(theURL) %>">link</a>

I've been using "Burn" for years and it has been the only DVD burning software I have ever used for the mac. I have never needed to look at other apps. Unless you want something that has more bells and whistles such as Roxio's "Toast" : http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/pro/overview.html
There are thousands of quality free apps out there for the mac that are not part of the App Store. All you have to do is read reviews online, do a little search, the Apple forums are full of recommendations from experienced users that have been here for years...

  • Problem while deploying app : An error occurred while contacting the subscription settings service

I am trying to deploy a provider hosted app.
According to various articles by MSDN, I have configured the app domain, the necessary services.
When I go on deploying the app, I get this error:
Error occurred in deployment step 'Install app for SharePoint': The server was unable to process the request due to an internal error.  For more information about the error, either turn on IncludeExceptionDetailInFaults (either from ServiceBehaviorAttribute
or from the <serviceDebug> configuration behavior) on the server in order to send the exception information back to the client, or turn on tracing as per the Microsoft .NET Framework SDK documentation and inspect the server trace logs.
I am not able to figure out where exactly the steps have gone wrong?
When checked with ULS Log Viewer, I am able to find the cause, which says
An error occurred while contacting the subscription settings service at 'http://spsite/795a076a57c543748c151b79ffc60e6c/SubscriptionSettings.svc/optimized'.

    Hi,
I assume you have seen this article:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/fp161236.aspx and that you created the Subscription Shared Service. Are you on the released version of SharePoint?
Try stopping and restarting the subscription service from central admin.
    Cheers
    Yina
