Record Video Podcast Directly to Desktop With QT Pro?

Hello all,
I was creating my video podcasts, but importing video into iMovie, then exporting.
I was trying to learn how to hook my minidv camcorder via firewire and record directly to my desktop. Not record then import, but record and save directly to the desktop.
I had read about people doing this with the iSight camera using QT Pro. I also read that using QT Pro, this should work with a minidv camcorder.
I purchased QT Pro last night to enable the "New Movie Recording" feature and I followed the directions here--> http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/videopodcasts.html
However, I can't get it to work. When following the above directions, there is no choice other than "Automatic" under Video Source. Shouldn't my camcorder be recognized as a choice here?
I have plugged my camcorder in via firewire and tried setting it to "manual", "play", and "automatic" with no results.
Can someone tell me if this is possible and if so maybe offer some advice on what I may be doing wrong?
Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

"Automatic" detection of audio and video is normal (at least it is when mine is plugged in). Only have one such device, so I don't know if "named" devices are used when more than one is attached.
I have plugged my camcorder in via firewire and tried setting it to "manual", "play", and "automatic" with no results.
Assume "Manual" and "Automatic" here are the equivalent to my "Camera" function (in auto or manual mode) for the capture of "live" material. ("Play" would be used for the capture of previously recorded material.)
Can someone tell me if this is possible and if so maybe offer some advice on what I may be doing wrong?
Yes. The only problem you should encounter is a possible reduction in frame rate dependent up CPU power, capture mode used, and number of processes running simultaneously.
I'm sorry, I forgot to add that when I choose "New Movie Recording" quicktime errors with the message that the device is in use with another program. Which, to my knowledge, is not the case. I do not have iChat or AOL running. In fact, I have tried with no other programs running....that I could see anyway.
When "New Movie Recoding" is selected, the preview window should open displaying what the camera is pointed at (if turned on in proper mode). Based on your "error message," it would appear that your computer thinks some other application (or connected hardware) has control of your camera. Try a "Force Quit" of running applications and "Quit" in the Avtivity Monitor to exit other "hidden" processes that might be causing problems.

  • Video podcasts no longer sync with iPod Touch

I am using latest version of iTunes 10.1.1 (4) and latest os 10.6.5 on MacBook Pro with iPod Touch (gen 3). I subscribe to a video podcast and in beginning it worked, but for last 2 months though they download into iTunes and I can watch them, they are either not syncing to my iPod or I cannot find them. Before they were in Podcast list along with audio podcasts.

Yeah I noticed some videos we'rent syncing to my iPod 5th Gen now that I switched to Mac, and reformatted my iPod, and was reminded that some items wouldn't transfer. These were certain podcasts, as well as a HD TV Show Episode. (I thought HD TV show purchases came with a SD version for iPod, but maybe it got lost in the transfer or I deleted it sometime)....but WHATEVER:
If you want, you can convert any video file to a format that fits iPod/iPhone, or even iPad/Apple TV, here's how:
Select the video item(s) you wish to make a compressed version for, and click ADVANCED on the menu bar. Then select "Create iPod/iPhone Version" or "Create iPad/Apple TV Version" depending on what you are syncing too. If these options are greyed out, it means it is not necessary to do this as those devices already can support the file as is. iTunes will then convert, and presto, you have a copy which will go onto your device!

  • After transfering my recorded video to my pc desktop, how can I record to a dvd.

I have transfered some pictures and recorded video of my Grandson onto my ipad2 but I cannot burn the video's I recorded. The video's I transfered to my pc where picked up  and labeled as Quick Time. I've gone into Windows Movie Maker and tried to transfer into the program to record but nothing happens. Am I going to need to purchase a seperate program?

You could insert a bunch of placeholders in the timeline before doing the voiceover.
You can find a range of placeholders (they are actually templates used in iMovie Trailers) in the Maps, Backgrounds & Animatics browser. This is the last browser at the end of the centre toolbar, after the Titles and Transitions browsers. Click on it and scroll down to see all the animatics (aka placholders or templates). Drag a number of these into your project timeline - as many as you think you need to cover your audio.
When you've finished the voiceover, drag photos directly onto the animatics and select Replace from the pop-up menu. Adjust the timing by using the Inspector (double-click a photo to open the Inspector, then change the duration).

  • 30 gig video, podcasts crash the ipod with iTunes 7.0.1

has anyone had their ipod crash only when playing podcasts? short podcasts are fine, but 50 minute or more, crash and restart the ipod. playing music is fine.

I have noticed two things with my 30 gig Video Ipod since i updated the software thru iTunes 7. First all my podcasts syncs that are happening with Album artwork are crashing the iPod and making it restart and the second is that it has also affected some songs albeit selectively. I tried turning the album artwork off and only once did one of the five podcasts i downloaded did work!
All the Podcasts or most of the ones that I had downloaded before iTunes 7 updater for iPod do tend to work but there is no pattern.
The reason I love apple and my iPod is the sheer magic of podcasts that are my companion and daily dose of caffeine en route to work...and I hate to get any glitches.
Can somebody walk through the step by step procedure to correct this or does one wait for another update from Apple?

  • Video not appearing when playing with QT Pro 7.7.2 on Win7.

I just transferred a video from my iPhone to my laptop using Google Drive.  I can playback the video flawlessly using Windows Media Player, but when trying to playback using QT Pro 7.7.2 the video is all black.  I've checked the Movie Properties and the video track is enabled.
Can anyone provide some guidance on why this might be happening and how to fix it?
This is my first experience using QT Pro and it's a bit frustrating.

OK so i found the solution myself - seems apple programmers have been not doing their jobs properly, to get this working the file name of the video that i want exported cannot be anything other than in 8.3 format (like old MS-DOS) but it's more than that, even if you do have the file in 8.3 format it still cant be in a directory that has a name longer than 8 characters, or which has spaces in it etc. so in my case i copied my video to c:\temp and renamed all of them to the old MS-DOS 8.3 format, now the export works... amazing I wonder how long i would have waited for apple support if i hadnt resolved this myself.

  • How do I prevent videos/video podcasts from showing up in my music library?

Right now, videos and video podcasts are mixed in with my music. How do I keep them separate (so I only see music when I go to "Music", etc)?

    You don't.

  • Video Podcasts not being saved.

With a fresh install of Windows XP and iTunes, Video Podcasts were not be saved after download and processing.  Discovered that Quicktime must be installed separately for Video Podcasts to work correctly with iTunes.
There was a "warning" with iTunes install that videoes could not be played without Quicktime.  There was no notice that it also affected down-loading and importing videoes as well

Don, I think you're a Legend. I haven't ticked you yet because I haven't tried it yet, but I'm pretty sure my problem is identical to yours and I've been searching for the answer for days.
Mr Apple, please take note. Don't just download and processing and make us download again and again. Either pop it up on your previous warning or put a warning up THEN. Thanks
    And thanks again Don

  • Settings for Video Podcast?

I don't have a video iPod, but a friend told me that my video didn't sync with her new iPod Nano via iTunes. Trying to figure out if there's something wrong with the encoding.
I read in the new video capable iPod specs...
H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
In iMovie HS '06, I have the following settings... (Share ->iPod isn't high enough quality for what I need).
    Export - > Quicktime > Expert Settings > Options >
    Video Settings...
    H.264
    Frame rate 29.97
    Key Frames Auto
    check frame reordering
    Data Rate - Restrict to 1536 kb/s (equal to 1.5 mb/s)
    Compressor - High & Multi-Pass
    Filter... no changes
    Size...
    Custom - 640 x 320 **
** (Video is 16 x 9, should I be going with 640 x 480 and preserve with letterboxing? Some iTunes videos are not letterboxed, though).
Check - Deinterlace Source Video (to get rid of that venetian blind effect).
    Sounds...
AAC, Best, limit to 128 kb/s
Anything I'm doing wrong here to get a good video podcast that will sync with an iPod?
    Thanks,
    Tom.

Yeah, good idea. Thanks for the reply I didn't think of Garage Band as supporting video, though. I'll check it out.
What I did do in the meantime is try iMovie '08. I was shying away from it since it didn't have as many features as iMovie HD. But it does add some nice features... including exporting to iTunes in one shot. And sure enough, a video pops up in iTunes encoded exactly like the music videos I got from the iTunes store. So, there's no reason it shouldn't work perfectly.
The only difference is the m4v extension vs. the mov extension. I don't think that matters since both are compatible with the iPod and QuickTime.
It looks like I had a lot of the settings, if not all correct. However, I think the short answer is use iMovie 08, export to iTunes.

  • Can recommend a slim/mini video camera that is compatible with FCE ?

    I have some technical problem.
My video camera is too big in size to film in between spaces. My friend has build a model of a few cluster of flats. He wants me to help him film the spaces between the flats from the bird's eye perspective. By bird's eye perspective, he meant to say he wants me to record what the bird can see if the bird fly surrounding the flats & between the flats & then make turns surrounding the buildings.
My present video is too bulky to squeeze into those small models.
I think the only way is to purchase a video camera that is so slim like a shape if pencil so that it can go in between the blocks.
Where can I buy this ? Will this type of video (if exist) records video in good quality & compatible with FCE4 ?
    Thanks

    Hi(Bonjour)!
You should look in Radio-Controled airplane model equipment. There are mini camera that mount on the model and broadcast the video on the air to a receiver that can be connected to a camcorder. You can connect them on any VCR
    See example:

  • Video podcasts won't transfer to iPod - it's not a format issue

I've been watching the video podcast "Wallstrip" www.wallstrip.com on my iPod. Just the other day I noticed a problem with my iPod software (v 1.2.1) and performed a restore. THAT problem was fixed (clicking play all in a list such as genre just scrolled songs but didn't play them) but now there's a NEW problem: The Wallstrip video podcast, which USED to transfer and play just fine, is now identified by iTunes as one that won't play because it's not the right format. Clearly there's a problem with the iPod. I've looked at forums and I am aware that one can manually convert it to "movies" but that's clearly not the problem. If it worked yesterday and doesn't today something's screwy. Ditto for the "Planet TV" podcast. Anyone know what to do?

i have the same problem. several of my video podcasts have stopped transferring with the same format error which i know is incorrect.

  • HELP!!! TROUBLE GETTING VIDEO PODCASTS EPISODE

Yes i am haveing trouble getting a video podcasts episode, it is with the globe podcast and popwar episode.
i click "get", and it starts to download and about half way through, up comes and error reporting message.
The message has two options "send error report", and "dont send" ive tried both but niether will let itunes continue with download, so idk what to do.
    thanks
    -billy

Well... only those type of error occur when iTunes has failed or crashed. What version of iTunes are you running? I have had no problems with Videos, Music, or Video Podcasts... but your problem could lie within these factors:
    1. iTunes is out of date?
    2. Internet Connection disconnected?
    3. Too many programs running? (Not enough system resources - RAM)
    4. There was another one but I lost it... :-P

  • Advice for recording spoken word directly into FCP?

I want to teach some kids to record spoken word directly into FCP with most likely a USB mic. I know that this is not the best way to do this, and a mixer would help greatly. With that said, can anyone provide any suggestions for getting the best quality out of a basic mic and a Mac with FCP?
    Thanks.

I'm with David on this. My sweet spot for peaks is in the -6 to -3 range as well. I'm talking about ideal for "recording" your VO, not necessarily for delivering a final mix to the client as already mentioned.
When you record anything through a microphone, there will be a noise floor to contend with. Even the quietest recording studios with the best isolation and the quietest mic preamps have noise and hum at some level. So it's critical for us without ideal recording environments to keep our recording levels as hot as possible without clipping in order to achieve the best signal-to-noise ratio. If you record something too low, and bring it up in post, you will be bringing up the noise floor along with the signal.

  • Record video directly into imovie with external microphone?

Here's what I am trying to, and I am just wondering if it is possible.
I like recording video covers/songs to put up on youtube.  i don't have a video camera that takes good video AND sound, and the video quality provided by recording in imovie through the isight is perfectly fine.  however, i would like better sound quality than i get with the internal microphone.
i own an mx audio pro system which allows me to connect external microphones to my computer through usb for higher quality recording (i've used it for garageband).
my question is whether i can simultaneously use the isight and external microphone when recording in imovie, and how i would do that??
    thanks!

Click System Preferences/Sound/Input and select your USB mic.
I know this works for voiceovers, but it should work for iSight as well.

  • Sending pictures through text and recording videos with the Iphone

so yea i know its not out and idk if apple is working on it but i think it would be really cool. I'm 14 years old and i own an iphone and its like i could do more with my lame verizon phone. another thing is u cant record videos... all the money they are putting into the iphone and it can't even do some of the standard camera phone abilities. i'm just suggesting so don't think i'm like ranting about how the iphone ***** because its really cool i love it! not everybody has an iphone so not everybody's email is going to there phone and some times there are pictures id really like to send to my friends like the other day i was riding my bike listening to music and it started pouring then it let up and i saw a rainbow so i pulled out my iPhone and i took pictures and i really wanted to send them to a friend but there email doesn't go directly to there phone.
and off topic what would be really sweet would is wireless head phones lol like ugh the wires always getting in my way and id really like to just listen to music in school hehe. not like the phone thingy but and actual ear bud thingy like the white apple headphones but cut the wire off and it just sends the audio wirelessly to the head phones
    thanks,

  • Recording Video and Audio at Same time with simultaneous sync

I want to record a keyboard performance into garageband and at the same time record the playing of that performance with my video camera. Then I want to create a movie using the music from garageband and the video from the camera. I was thinking that if I can sync the video and audio when I'm recording the session, then that part is taken care of. Or, maybe this is easier than I think it is?
Is there a way to do this so that I can use the garageband record performance and have it synced to the video on the camera?
I don't want to use the audio from the video camera because the performance that is captured in Garageband will be much better and I can do editing of the individual notes in GB.
In the end, I just want to make a movie and/or podcast of the performance.
I'm a newbie regarding this, but I did search the forums and couldn't find anything specific. Mostly it was about importing video into GB3 and then syncing new audio. I'll basically have audio and video from the same performance in two separate locations and I want to bring them together perfectly in Garageband.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
    Powerbook G4 - DVI   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Okay. I got the video and audio all together. I told you I'd link to it when it was up.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxssYpUNJm8
There's also a copy of it at http://www.myspace.com/bonjimmy/
And as a quick side comment, even though I uploaded the same video to both YouTube and MySpace, the MySpace version is much better. YouTube must do something to the video after it's uploaded.
What I learned doing this project:
I recorded the video first (which gave me the sequencing of the piano performance) and then I dubbed the audio in later. However, there wasn't a good way to sync the video and the prerecorded piano, so there are some spots where the dubbed audio vocal isn't accurate to the video. I'm not sure what the pros do for this. I was hoping I'd remember how I sang for the video but when a couple weeks go by before re-doing the audio, it's about impossible. I tried, though.
I remember working with an old 4-track and smpte to a sequencer a long time ago. With the way it is now, it's pretty cool that you can record digitally and mix and match and everything falls together perfectly as long as you have a place to match the video and the audio. It's pretty cool.
    What else???
Does anyone have suggestions that would have made it better? Also, if you have suggestions on my performance or whatever, I'd love comments, but you can do that on the linked page.
Thanks again for all your help. (The point of the video is because I'm thinking about getting back out there and doing some more playing... I'm looking for a band or something else interesting...)
