Recording beta question - seeking in recorded streams and syncing playback

hi lccs, some initial questions for you as i get started on the beta..
you say audio and video are saved in separate FLVs on the client server.  does LCCS ensure that audio/video sync is maintained during playback?
how are the recorded streams delivered during playback?  can you seek into these streams? e.g. if i have a recording of a video chat, can i use a timeline to seek forward and back through that video?
and finally - i will want to play back a recorded audio video chat between two users.  will LCCS take care of synchronization between these four streams? (two video, two audio) or do i need to build a synchronized buffering strategy to achieve this?

To reiterate Raff's point - when you setup a ConnectSessionContainer with a
PlaybackAuthenticator (essentially, a "playback application"), that
ConnectSession does all the work of synchronizing streams for you. As Raff
says, you can build a timeline and seek within it - ConnectSession's
archiveManager exposes all aspects of the playback to you.
In fact, here's a basic seek bar you could try :
<s:HSlider width="800" maximum="{cSession.archiveManager.totalTime}"
value="{cSession.archiveManager.currentTime}" id="slider"
change="cSession.archiveManager.seek(slider.value)"/>
lastly, as Raff also says, you're not restricted to playing back the exact
application you recorded. If you had, say, audio/video chat plus text chat
recorded, and all you wanted for playback was the A/V, remove the text chat
from your playback application (and delete the chat FLV from the recording
zip, to save on bandwidth), and your playback app should just work. You can
also totally re-layout how your app looks for playback as compared to
"live", or allow your users to manipulate the layout or contents of what's
being played back as they watch the recording. We think this will allow for
some really interesting, innovative applications.
  hope that helps,

  • Streaming and syncing

HAVE found a problem / have a question. I have synced my ATV with my macpro itunes. Some movies and TV shows are synced but as I have a lot of content, I need to stream the rest. Whenever I attempt to stream from the mac pro it tells me I have no content eg movies. So - is it true that you cant sync AND stream from the same itunes?? I did get a reply for Fletsch saying that streaming and syncing was possible (as I thought). BUT for some reason I dont get that option in my ATV menu. My existing content is invisible unless I sync it. Really annoying, as it also seems that if I set ATV to stream, it removes it as a synced option. Unless there is a box I havent checked or a setting I have missed. It is so much more complicated than the previous interface. Any ideas?

When an itunes library is set as the primary library (syncing) it will also stream any content you have in the library that isn't synced provided it is checked by its name in the appropriate library listing.
It sounds as though the tv can't see your library when set up as the primary library, is your itunes library sharing turned on in itunes prefs.

  • Can I stream and sync from the same itunes library to one AppleTV?

Can I stream and sync from the same itunes library to one AppleTV?

From what I can tell this is a bug.
A very Frustrating bug. When the take 2 update launched I was streaming movies via "shared movies" from my synched computer without any issues. However after a couple of recent iTunes updates all the "shared" menus stopped appearing and I can no longer stream anything from my main computer.
When I open up my macbook though everything streams fine, all the "shared" menus immediately appear.
Numerous restarts, factory resets and reinstalling the 2.0 software have done nothing to help this issue.
If anyone has any more light on the subject it'd be great to hear. Also I'm not sure which update broke it because I went about a month not using the apple tv.

  • Stream AND Sync???

Hmmm... I can't stream and SEE my photos, but I can sync and still see my photos. But wait, 40gb is 460GB TOO SMALL for me, so if I sync, I am limited to what I can view as far as Movies, TVs, Podcasts, Music are concerned.
The dilemma... HOW can I BOTH STREAM (my movie etc content), AND SYNC (to see my photos) from the SAME iTunes database???
I called Apple, they were not at all helpful, and I had to wait while I listened to them look up on their computer, murmur and finally (after 15 min) decide they did NOT know if Stream+Sync is possible. Same problem after calling my local Apple store (!!!)
ANYWAY, I would be most grateful if this simple question was answered-- CAN APPLETV both STREAM (movies/TV/Music) AND SYNC (pictures) from the same iTunes library (on a single computer). If so, precisely HOW is that done?
Thanking you in advance. I will deliver the information to Apple Tech support to disseminate once I know how it is done!

If so, precisely HOW is that done?Turn off syncing for everything but your photos. Sync photos in whatever manner you plan to use. Once sync'd, use the "Sources" menu to select the TV (first option) to view photos. Use the "Named" iTunes Music option (usually the second option wher only one iTunes "host" computer is connected) to view all other "streaming" content. Simply switch back and forth as needed. Remember, iTunes must be running to access streaming content. (If not, the option will be grayed out.)
ADDED: Sorry, Robert. You beat me to the responence.

  • Strange slow streaming and syncing problem - any diagnostics?

I have two Apple TVs syncing wirelessly via an Airport Extreme with an iMac and one of the ATVs has begun behaving very strangely. I've rebooted my ATV, and even gone back to it's factory settings (2.1) and updated it to the latest firmware again without success. iTunes is version 8.1.1, but I had the same trouble with recent version of iTunes too. The problem ATV used to work fine with iTunes.
Syncing has been intermittent and iTunes frequently 'loses' my problem ATV2. Restarting iTunes will usually find it OK, but sometimes I have to go into my ATV2 settings and re-select the Airport Extreme and input my security password again before it's recognised by iTunes.
Even when iTunes does 'see' ATV2, the syncing has been extremely slow. The display of 'Top Movies' thumbnails has also been very sluggish. Playback of movie and podcast material from my iMac / iTunes library has also ground to a halt. For the most part I just stream from the iMac, and have most settings for ATV2 set to e.g. 'sync selected Movies'.
But even when I've selected items to sync with ATV2 the syncing is very slow. Today a 200 MB .m4v file took about 18 minutes to copy across to my ATV2. Once it had transferred across it played fine from the ATV2, with none of the stop/start problems I'd had when streaming from iTunes.
My Airport extreme is in the same room and about 12 feet from ATV2. My ATV1 is in a nearby but different room, and works fine, even though it's further away.
Is there any way I can diagnose the cause of this issue, or does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem might be? I presumed that a factory reset removed all settings on my ATV2 but is there a more extreme reset I could have done?
    Thanks.

I can offer at least a partial reply to my own question.
I found lots of messages suggesting problems with the more recent firmware upgrade of Apple's Airport Extreme. So I downgraded from 7.4.1 to the older version 7.3.2 and afterwards my sluggish syncing and playback issues seemed to be resolved.
The file that took around 18 minutes to sync before now does it in about two minutes, and playback of files is normal. Don't know yet how well the older firmware will hold onto my ATV2 but I suspect all those issues were related and hope that will be fixed too.
If there are any downsides I'll update here.
Incidentally I forgot to mention that my ATV1 which had no problems with the Airport Extreme was an earlier model 1.x with updated firmware, whereas the problematic ATV2 had the later 2.x firmware, updated to 2.3.1. Both appear to be working fine now.

  • Annoying little issue with streaming and syncing.

My Macbook is connected to two external hard drives which are hosts to all my movie and tv show files. These files make up my iTunes library so when I sync content the files are copied from my external HD's to my ATV. Some are copied and some I stream. I therefore have a massive library on the ATV selection under "My Movies" and "My TV Shows".
However, when I shutdown iTunes. All the content still shows up in the menus. Those that are synced can obviously be played but those that are not synced and played by streaming, still appear on the menu but obviously can't be played.
This is very annoying. I can't keep track of how many of the hundreds of movie files have been synced and which ones haven't. Before the latest update, the files that were not synced would disappear from the many once iTunes was shut down but now it appears they still remain there.
Any fix for this issue? And no, I don't want to tick "Show only synced items on my Apple TV" because then I can't stream anymore.

can confirm that this is also still the case for me, and i stream everything.

  • Hi,can i rip and sync individual cd's into my i-pod or do i have to sync my entire my entire library

hey guys, ive got an i-pod classic 160 gb,i have filled aprox 100 gb and ive got 60gb left to fill.
my question is -can i rip and sync individual cds onto the i-pod and if so whats the best way?thanks.

You should check that figure. It's more likely that you have about 48GB remaining, since the operating system and various other factors mean that you do not actually have 160GB of storage on a 160GB drive. Your computer's hard drive will have the same characteristic, i.e. a lowerr capacity than specified.
Further to Kappy's assistance, there are two methods for doing what you want:
if you choose to use Sync only ticked songs and videos, you can then untick any song that you do not want on your iPod. A Sync will then action those changes. This is the better method for deselecting a few songs, or one or two at a time.
Use Sync Selected Playlists, Artists, Albums etc. to manage large quantities of songs, such as whole albums etc.

    I tried Stream.play()
    var s=Stream.get("combine");

    s.record("append");
    it's don't work!!

Thanks, that's what I had thought. Our domain.com zone is sourced internally and replicated to our advertisers for external users, so there's no way to change the result for internal vs external users.
This is a rudimentary question that I should already know but I sort of inherited this after it was built: Can I have users sign in with their email address ([email protected]) but under the hood, their SIP address is [email protected]? This would let users
sign in with an address they expect, but it would take advantage of the the local lyncdiscoverinternal record.

  • Recording a stream and using it on the fly

    Hi,
I'm trying to upload a video stream from a flash client and
convert the video stream on the fly (from an external converter
    like ffmpeg or vlc).
Since I don't manage to send the stream directly to the
converter, a solution I have found is to publish the sream as
"record", and have a converter read the file to perform the
    operation.
However, when setting the record method for publishing, the
recorded file is not written continuously. Incoming stream is
buffered, written, buffered, written and so on. So, the program
reading the file stops it reaches the end.
Is there a way in FMS2 to either:
    - forward incoming RTMP stream to a stream converter (using
an outgoing RTSP stream or something like that) ?
    - force FMS2 to dump the stream continuously, as soon as it
    receives the incoming data ?
    Thanks for any help,
    Greg

    Stream.syncWrite
    Availability Flash Media Server 2.
    Usage myStream.syncWrite
    Description
Property; a Boolean value that controls when a stream writes
the contents of the buffer to a
FLV file when the stream is recording. When syncWrite is
true, all the messages that pass
through the stream are flushed to the FLV file immediately.
    It is highly recommended that
user should only set syncWrite to true in a stream that
    contains only data. Synchronization
problems might occur when syncWrite is set to true in a
    stream that contains data and
    audio, video, or both.
... sounds like a problem is occuring :)

  • Question about video recording and size of the recording on a tv/comp

So i just started editing my iphone movies with imovie for mac. However I ran into a problem right away. When i recorded a video while holding my iphone vertically the playback was horrible on my mac because it was so skinny and not wide at all. First off I was wondering if there was a some way to make it wider? My videos that were recorded while my iphone was horizontal then they are perfect when viewing on my mac. So if anyone can help me with this question i would greatly appreciate it.

You cannot record a video any wider when recording a video in portrait mode or make it wider after being recorded. If recording a video in landscape mode is what you prefer, you need to record all videos in landscape mode.

  • Few questions about the recording

    Hi,
I'm intersting in adding recording/playback option to my webcam application and i have few questions regarding the recording functionality:
    1. My webcam app is using P2P connection, will the recording stop my P2P?
    2. Will the recording create some latency in the audio/video?
    3. can i change the quality of the recording?
    4. is there away to encrypt the archived zip file?
    Thanks,
    Tzahi

    1) yes, currently recording is always hub&spoke (and we don't have a real plan to support recording with p2p since it would require a substantial amount of changes in the server-side application)
    2) no, recording is independent from streaming
    3) no - I believe recordings are stored at the quality they are streamed. In theory you could re-encode audio and video stream to a lower quality for playback and repackage the zip file (assuming re-encoding the stream doesn't change the internal timestamps)
    4) currently not. We are simply using the "zip" command (on *nix) to archive the files so in theory we could add the password/encryption option but that would require for you to store the required password on our servers and for us to pass it on the command-line making the process not very secure anyway.
Any specific reason to keep your archives on your servers encrypted ?

  • Recording Voice-Over via Final Cut Pro and Recording Via Pro Tools?

    Hey all,
I'm recording some voice-over for a documentary shot on DV.
Here's my question: all other factors being the same, is there any disadvantage in terms of audio quality of recording into Final Cut (through an m-box2) using the voice-over tool, or recording into M-Powered Pro Tools using the mbox 2 (and then bringing the file to Final Cut)?
Pro Tools obviously allows for a far more sophisticated treatment of the sound after it has been imputed - but in terms of using it for capture?
I know that Pro tools allows 24bit recording, but I'd probably record at 16bit anyway so as to match the sample rate of the rest of my audio in the project.
I'd be using the same mic-xlr-mbox2 set-up and the same computer, does anyone have any views on the difference in the quality of the recorded audio?
    Thanks

actually an in point by itself won't help you
a valid recording range needs both In and Out point, or simply a clip in the timeline which by its presence denotes the recording range
the recording range must be less than 5 minutes
in a blank timeline some like to throw a slug in there to mark the recording range, i find it easiest to just enter a duration in the canvas (i type 4.. in the duration field at top left of the canvas and it automatically marks a 4 minute range)

  • With my iPhone 5s, can I record long voice memo to the cloud and not worry about storage on phone?

With my iPhone 5s, can I record a long voice memo to the cloud and not worry about storage space on phone?

You can't add music to the cloud, whether it will show there for streaming and redownloading depends upon what country that you are in. If you are in a country where music is available in the cloud then you don't have to download the music from the store, if you turn Settings > iTunes & App Store > Music (under the 'show all' heading) 'on' then you should be able to stream purchased music in the Music app without downloading it - your phone will need to be online in order to stream, and if using 3G/4G then it will use some of your data allowance.
If you download an album or a track then it will be downloaded onto your phone. You can't upload music to the cloud from an iOS device. Whether music that you've bought shows for streaming depends upon what country that you are in and if the album or track remains in the store (unless you've subscribed to iTunes Match), and if you are connected to a network.

  • Very important question about fm record

I saw a Creative gb nano plus that says on the package that it will record fm. I want to record a show while working so can listen to it when I get home (like timeshifting on the vcr). However, I see that on this forum, the fm recording has been eliminated. My question is: )if the product package says there is fm recording, is there actually fm recording? 2)if there is no fm recording, please recommend another brand that has fm recording. Also, I want the fm recording to be clear, nearly as good as the original heard through the headphones. It gets very tiring to listen to a low bitrate recording. Thank you for your prompt reply because I want to buy one as soon as possible

I'm not trying to change my account name, I'm trying to change the name of a folder. If you open up finder, then on the left you'll see the sections devices, places and search for. I'm trying to change the folder under places with the little house symbol next to it. Instead of being called Home like it's supposed to it has the beginning of my email address, which is emokidd21. I really want to change that because that's an old email account that I only use for itunes and instant messaging and I just plain old don't like the name. I really hope there is a way to change this!

  • Yet another photo question -- better to stream or sync?

I plan to purchase an ATV this weekend and need help choosing between the 40 and 160 models. Though I've read dozens of posts, I'm still confused whether streaming or syncing photos will work best for me. My understanding is that I will only need the 40GB if I stream (ignoring other HD uses).
My photo setup: I currently have about 10,000 pix stored on a NAS drive and add to them weekly. My itunes runs on a PC (sorry) and I manage photos with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.(I do not have Photoshop Elements). Network is hardwire 100MB.
    My goals:
    1. To view my pix on ATV with the least additional workflow relative to my current habit of downloading and managing images in Lightroom (i.e. need to transfer or rename files to view them in ATV, etc.)
    2. To have the best possible viewing performance (i.e. no lag, easy to find pix, etc.)
    3. Spend as little as possible (i.e. no new software, 40HDD)
How does streaming compare to syncing given my needs?
    What size drive?
Thanks in advance for the help. Sorry if the answer is obvious.
    Ken

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
In most cases setting up your itunes as a syncing or primary library is a better option, it gives you much more functionality. What you should remember is that even in the role as a primary library you do not need to sync all your content as you have the option with a primary library of syncing or streaming your content.
This doesn't apply to photos though, so if you set itunes up as a primary library you must sync your photos, if you set it up as a secondary library you can only stream them.
Question to ask yourself is how many of the photos will you want on the tv, I have about 14,000 photos but only have about 4,500 on the tv. Many of my photos were taken on digital cameras as far back as 1995 when photo file size was quite small hence I have about 4 GB of photos on the tv.
I sync very little else and 4 of my 5 tv's are 40 GB and the other tv doesn't really have anything different on. You do use a little space for temporary storage of purchases and rentals you make via the tv, but I rarely ever have more than 10 GB of such content at any one time.
