Recordset.updateString returns SQL exception?

Hi,
I have the following code:
statement2 = connection2.createStatement(
                                      ResultSet.TYPE_SCROLL_INSENSITIVE,
                                      ResultSet.CONCUR_UPDATABLE);
         System.out.println(queryString);
         rset = statement2.executeQuery(queryString);
for (i=1; i <= totalRecords; i++){
rset.next();
            rset.absolute(i);
//...more conditional logic...
rset.absolute(i);
                        rset.updateString("CLLI", theoreticalClli);  //theoreticalClli already has a value
                        rset.updateRow();
} I get an SQL exception at the rset.updateString part, does anyone know how I can resolve this?
Thanks very much in advance for your time and help.

What is the advantage of using the recordset modify functions? Isn't it more understandable to keep it as pure SQL? It seems like once you start mucking with your own copy of information that mutual exclusion problems would become a nightmare- that is the point of transactions on a database, to keep things unified. But what do I know? Is it actually modifying the database itself, or a copy of it?

  • How to test a procedure which returns a recordset from pl/sql

    hello,
    Is it possible to test a procedure which returns a recordset from pl/sql?
    Everything I try results in errors like PLS-00382: expression is of wrong type, when I try to open the result cursor
    or PLS-00221: tc is not a procedure or is undefined.
    I created the following procedure:
    CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE test AS
    TYPE cursorType is REF CURSOR;
    PROCEDURE test_cursor( tc IN OUT cursorType,
    v_err OUT varchar2,
    v_msg OUT varchar2);
    END;
    CREATE OR REPLACE
    PACKAGE BODY test AS
    PROCEDURE test_cursor
    (tc IN OUT cursorType,
    v_err OUT varchar2,
    v_msg OUT varchar2)
    AS
    BEGIN
    open tc for
    SELECT '1' "number" FROM dual
    union
    select '2' "number" from dual;
    v_msg := 'no errors';
    v_err := 0;
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN NO_DATA_FOUND
    THEN
    v_msg := 'no data found';
    v_err := SQLCODE;
    WHEN OTHERS
    THEN
    v_msg := SQLERRM;
    v_err := SQLCODE;
    END;
    END;
    I try to get the output from pl/sql with something like this:
    DECLARE
    TC PROVGRON.TEST.cursorType;
    V_ERR VARCHAR2(200);
    V_MSG VARCHAR2(200);
    BEGIN
    V_ERR := NULL;
    V_MSG := NULL;
    PROVGRON.TEST.TEST_CURSOR ( TC, V_ERR, V_MSG );
    DBMS_OUTPUT.Put_Line('V_ERR = ' || V_ERR);
    DBMS_OUTPUT.Put_Line('V_MSG = ' || V_MSG);
    -- in tc I was hoping to hava a cursor??
    FOR i IN tc
    LOOP
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE (i.number);
    END LOOP;
    END;
    Without the for loop (or open tc) the pl/sql will output:
    V_ERR = 0
    V_MSG = no errors
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
    With anything I try with the cursor I get errors?
    What am I doing wrong?

    This query will never work. I marked only couple of errors you have there. Actually,
    I meant "formating" errors rather than "syntactical" errors. You are missing spaces
    all over the place. This is why I suggested to use a CLOB column in a test table
    to return the query for debugging purposes - this is how I do it at least, when I need
    to escape and concatenate a lot of code.
    If you are referencing item values from a user session in a function or a procedure,
    then you need to use the v('ITEM') syntax instead of :ITEM syntax. However, if the
    output of this procedure will be used as a function returning SQL query, you will
    be fine with :ITEM.

    Could you please help me, why Iam getting this message:You have bug in your software

  • Usage of Xopen SQL states and SQL Exception?

    Hi
    Is there way to make full use of SQL Exceptions?
    Has anybody used sql states from sql exception?
    It is specified in the API reference that an sql exception object contains an xopen sql state which is a string. But the states in specs are defined as class, subclass.
    The question is how can i make use of these java strings to interpret what exactly happened at the database? Are they really useful? If they are, any utilities which converts these strings to a meaningful message? Any pointers on these question would also help me.
    Thanx in adv.
    Giridhar

    SQLException has inherited a method getMessage() which seems to be quite useful.
    For situations where you want to check on a specific one of several possible (or expected) states (like: maybe the table is not yet created ...), I think you can quite fine use getSQLState() and also getErorCode(). Try out in tests, which information is returned by which constellation, then you can use it for making decisions in your program logic.
    But be aware, that all these informations probably are DBMS specific!

  • SQL Exceptions, transport-level errors on SharePoint 2010 App Server

    SharePoint 2010 becomes inaccessible 2-3 times per day. It happens at approximately the same times: 8 PM, 1 AM and 1 PM. It is inaccessible for about 3-4 minutes and then comes back on its own.
    During the time it is down, we see the following errors in the event viewer on the application server:
    EventID: 5586 Task Category: Database -
    Unknown SQL Exception 64 occurred. Additional error information from SQL Server is included below.A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server.
    (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The specified network name is no longer available.)
    EventID: 3 Task Category: None -
    .Net SqlClient Data Provider: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error:
    0 - The specified network name is no longer available.)
    EventID: 6398 Task Category: Timer -
    The Execute method of job definition Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Monitoring.HealthStatUpdateJobDefinition (ID f9db48f1-f115-47ab-99b6-552460cbb782) threw an exception. More
    information is included below. A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The specified network name is no longer available.)
    EventID: 8086 Task Category: Business Data -
    The BDC Service application failed due to a SQL Exception: SQLServer host ums1spd1v. The error returned was: 'A transport-level error has occurred when sending the request to
    the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.)'
    The SharePoint logs have errors during the same time period saying the same kinds of things: Sql exception raw message: A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server,
    The specified network name is no longer available, etc.
    Our network administrator has looked at the issue and cannot find any network problems.
    He setup a continuous ping from the app server to the database server.
    Even during the times these errors are occurring, the app server is still able to reach the database server.
    However, you cannot ping the app server itself during this time.
    Our database administer cannot find any SQL Server issues.
    There are no errors in the event viewer or the SQL logs on the database server.
    In Central Admin, we can see that one or two jobs fail with SQL errors during the times these errors take place.
     It is almost always the “User Profile Service Application – User Profile Language Synchronization Job” and often the “Health Statistics Updating” or “Crawl Log Report for Search Application Search Service Application”.
    These jobs run successfully at many other times during the day.
    Is there a good way to tell if the database, network or SharePoint itself is the root of these problems?
    The database and network guys say there are no problems in their areas, but all I can find in the SharePoint logs is that it can’t reach the database server.
    Thank you for any suggestions you may have!

    Since these seem to happen at very specific times, I would run a NetMon trace at that window to capture what is going back and forth (or perhaps the timer service is just unable to reach the SQL server).

    Hi Peter,
    You are right. Child is being inserted even before parent got inserted (actually "committed") into the DB.we would need to look at your code where are you doing all these creates (may be ejbCreate). Most probably ur error should get fixed by changing the transactional attributes in the DD files. Try using <delay-database-inserts-until> element.

    Hope it helps!

    i have resolved this problem earlier by setting the parameter cursor_sharing= exact scope=both;
    even then it throws the exception now.
    there are no long datatypes on my table which i'm importing.
    plz help me.
    thanx in advance

    Hi Darthvader,
    I have sent the structure any ways i do send it again.
    The first Thing is that this is the table created by selecting some of the columns which are returned by a function in the production DB into a staging table. this prob started when i tried to import the table. i ahev been using this tool since 1.5 years and i never faced this problem after setting the parameter cursour_sharing=exact.
    i'm facing this problem while i tried importing other tables which are already imported.
    This has really put me under pressure.
    following is the structure of the table
    CREATE TABLE xyz
    BRANCH VARCHAR2(10 BYTE),
    CHNL VARCHAR2(13 BYTE),
    YTD NUMBER,
    YTDAMT NUMBER,
    YTDREC NUMBER,
    YTDAMTREC NUMBER,
    PRODUCT_ID NUMBER,
    ROLLING_PERIOD VARCHAR2(15 BYTE)

  • Sql.exception using jdbc:odbc Sqlserver 7

    hi
    i use java jdk 1.3 and sqlserver 7.0 on windows98 and establish a connection over jbc:odbc. I use executeUpdate() statement and insert something to a table. there is a trigger defined and sometimes i got an sql.exception, that no rowcount returned.
    can you help me ?
    thanks jens

    The trigger does a rollback in some cases.
    Obviously - try this out! - this causes that JDBC exception then.
    Now I see a problem in this, that the trigger does rollbacks concering the connection, but your Java program does not know that its connection's actual transaction has been rolled back. Imagine, if you have done several steps before without commitng yet, they are rolled back as well.
    So I would use this only with AutoCommit set to true.
    I think it's not a good idea in general to let a trigger do a rollback. But in this area I have few experiences.
    I assume you have to use this table schema and its trigger definition and can't change it.
    So I would find out the error code which this DBException contains.
    So in case of exceptions you can identify if this case has happened and react on it in your logic. You must interpretate this as an error or maybe as an expected condition - that depends on your logic.
    Another thought: can't you validate the values before you do the insert. Then this logic would not longer be encapsulated in the trigger, but maybe it is really a validation rule which the program should know anyway. What do you tell the user if it has occured?

  • Mysql recordset inconsistent returns

    I am developing a php site using mysql and apache.
    I have finally managed to get a database connection and am
    trying now to create some recordsets.
    This is where the difficulties lie.....
    I have 14 tables, the majority of which are for drop down
    menus. - All these (Single columns) return recordsets with no
    problems.
    The two main relational tables have multiple columns.
    If I select a the majority of single selected columns, I have
    no problem but there are two columns where no recordset is
    returned. I have tried renaming these columns with no effect. The
    sql query seems fine and does work with all but two columns.
    Can ayone explain this inconsistency?
    Is it something to do with field definition?
    I am really dying for any help here.

    Show us some that work and some that don't, please. And tell
    us what the
    result of each is.

  • Invalid Descriptor Index (SQL exception)

    Hi Defts,
    im developing an application using swings, im getting an Invalid Descriptor Index (SQL exception). I have given my code below kindly help me out.
    private void formWindowActivated(java.awt.event.WindowEvent evt) {
    // TODO add your handling code here:
    try
    Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbc");
    Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:odbc:tourismdatasource", "sa", "");
    String sel= "select * from tab_places where place_ID=?";
    PreparedStatement ps=con.prepareStatement(sel);
    ps.setString(1, jTextField4.getText().toString().trim());
    ResultSet rs=ps.executeQuery();
    if(rs.next())
    jTextField1.setText(rs.getString("place_name").toString());
    jTextField2.setText(rs.getString("state").toString());
    jTextField3.setText(rs.getString("category").toString());
    jTextArea1.setText(rs.getString("place_des").toString());
    catch(SQLException se){JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, se.getMessage());}
    catch(ClassNotFoundException ce){JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, ce.getMessage());}
    }

    It would help to know what statement is throwing the exception. The stack trace tells you that.
    As a guess the "select *" is returning the columns in a specific order. You are not calling getString() in that order though.
    Or one of the getString() values is wrong.
    And get rid of the ToString() calls on the getString() methods - they are already strings.
