Hello,
my question might be a little strange, but I would just like to confirm my understanding to be sure about my testing.

RMAN> /** I left out some lines that seemed duplicate for my question - lines with the same SCN and some older archived logs. I can post the whole thing if it should turn out to be relevant.
What SCN would be appropriate for me to use, taking into account this is a level 0 incremental backup, to restore to the point of a full backup?
I'm fairly sure i can do the following: (and yes, this will result in a successful restore/recover)
run{
set until scn 690770341;
restore database;
switch datafile all;
recover database;
} But is that really the point that I should recover to? The other alternative would be to recover to the SCN of those archivelogs at the very bottom?
Thank you for any comments, whatever they are :-)I am copying the backups between different hosts (or external tape applications) and building the database from backups. So I create a blank instance and catalog the backup files, then specify an SCN to restore/recover.
Would the SCN part be unneeded? I guess if I want to recover to the latest possible state, I do not need to specify any SCN :-). For testing purposes I only specified the full backup SCN to save time, but in the event this would be needed in a production environment, you are right that I would need to recover to the latest possible SCN. Thanks for pointing that out. -
"recover database until cancel" asks for archive log file that do not exist
Hello,
Oracle Release : Oracle 10.2.0.2.0
Last week we performed, a restore and then an Oracle recovery using the recover database until cancel command. (we didn't use backup control files) .It worked fine and we able to restart the SAP instances. However, I still have questions about Oracle behaviour using this command.
First we restored, an online backup.
We tried to restart the database, but got ORA-01113,ORA-01110 errors :
sr3usr.data1 needed media recovery.
Then we performed the recovery :
According Oracel documentation, "recover database until cancel recovery" proceeds by prompting you with the suggested filenames of archived redo log files.
The probleme is it prompts for archive log file that do not exist.
As you can see below, it asked for SMAarch1_10420_610186861.dbf that has never been created. Therefore, I cancelled manually the recovery, and restarted the database. We never got the message "media recovery complete"

When restaring the database we could see that, a recovery of online redo log has been performed automatically, is it the normal behaviour of a recovery using "recover database until cancel" command ?

Thank you very much for your help.
Frod.Hi,
Let me answer your query.
=======================
Your question: While performing the recovery, is it possible to locate which online redolog is needed, and then to apply the changes in these logs
1. When you have current controlfile and need complete data (no data loss),
then do not go for until cancel recovery.
2. Oracle will apply all the redologs (including current redolog) while recovery
process is on.
3. During the recovery you need to have all the redologs which are listed in the view V$RECOVERY_LOG and all the unarchived and current redolog. By querying V$RECOVERY_LOG you can find out about the redologs required.
4. If the required sequence is not there in the archive destination, and if recovery process asks for that sequence you can query V$LOG to see whether requested sequence is part of the online redologs. If yes you can mention the path of the online redolog to complete the recovery.
Hope this information helps.

Recover database until cancel using backup controlfile Fails with ORA-01547
Hi
First of all, I'm sorry for posting in this community as my issue doesn't have any thing to do with Rman, but I couldn't find any more relative Community to post in
our System is Oracle EBS 11i and the OS on the production is AIX 5.2 / and the DR is 5.3 / DB version is 9i
we have our Oracle ERP scheduled using crontab to take a database COLD backup daily using gtar -cvzf .
yesterday I needed to clone the database only, so I used my usual method witch is
1) on the source SQL> alter database backup controlfile to trace as '<dest>/makecntrlfil.sql'
then you can delete the Commented header and change the first command from
"CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE DATABASE <SOURCE> NORESETLOGS ..."
TO
CREATE CONTROLFILE SET DATABASE <TARGET> RESETLOGS <NO>ARCHIVELOG
2) de-compress the tgz files
3) on the target edit the $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/init<source>.ora, $ORACLE_HOME/environment file
4)run /ORACLE_HOME/appsutils/clone/bin/adcfgclone.prl
5) delete old controlfiles
6) on the database run the script you created on firs t step to create a new control fole
7)recover database until cancel using backup controlfile
8) alter database open resetlogs
add new temp file system
this way I used to do it
but yesterday when trying to execute recover database it didn't work, and gave this error
ORA-00279: change 6450277404 generated at 02/28/2013 02:47:56 needed for thread
1
ORA-00289: suggestion : /ERPDEV/DBASE/devdb/9.2.0/dbs/arch1_188462.dbf
ORA-00280: change 6450277404 for thread 1 is in sequence #188462
Specify log: {<RET>=suggested | filename | AUTO | CANCEL} >> I gave cancel >> so >>
ORA-01547: warning: RECOVER succeeded but OPEN RESETLOGS would get error below
ORA-01152: file 1 was not restored from a sufficiently old backup
ORA-01110: data file 1: '/ERPDEV/DBASE/SYS/devdata/system01.dbf'
nothing strange in the original alert log file in the time of taking the backup
So can You please tell me what maybe wrong and why it used to work before and now it's not
take in consideration that we are on archive log mode, but not using Rman or the archived Logs for backup and the sequence it needed ( 188462 ) is too old and already deleted on Production.the output of the sript

Recover database until time - doesn't recover as expected
Hi,
We've got an Oracle 9i db (9208) running on AIX.
We've had a problem and that has meant restoring all the dbf's and control files from the over night backup onto the server replacing the currently corrupted system.
Once this was done we then opened the DB in order to check some things.
Once this was done we then closed and mounted it and issued the "recover database until time .... " command.
The archive logs we need are in the default archive location. They cover the time period just prior to the restored files up until the time we need the DB recovered to.
However, when running the recover the alert log just shows
"ALTER DATABASE RECOVER database until time '2010-08-11:16:30:00'
Mon Aug 16 14:33:57 2010
Media Recovery Start
Media Recovery Not Required"
Can anyone tell us why the recover command isn't recovering the archive log files up until the time we are specifying. It doesn't look like its even looking at them.
The command executes in less than a second.
Is this because we opened the DB between restoring and recovering so its already written a newer archive log file, so the DB thinks its already up to date???Got it - thanks
Basically cause we were also restoring the control file so when adding the "using backup controlfile" it then started to work.
SQL> recover database until time '2010-08-11:16:30:00' using backup controlfile
ORA-00279: change 276395529 generated at 08/10/2010 21:59:38 needed for thread

ORA-00289: suggestion : /archive_logs/tprod/arch0000070260.arc
ORA-00280: change 276395529 for thread 1 is in sequence #70260
Specify log: {<RET>=suggested | filename | AUTO | CANCEL}
This was the first message we got once we put the "using backup controlfile" part into the command.
We selected AUTO and its now slowly working through all the archive log files going up the numbers therefore i assume applying the archive logs correctly.
Once this is done i believe we just "alter database open resetlogs" -
Doubt in Recover database until cancel
Hi experts,
One query, I want to try out recover database until cancel. But my archivelog files are in tape drive. How do i do it as it ask for archiver destination directory for the archivelog file.
Or can any please explain how should i do it.
Thanks in advance
shaanHi Satist,
when i apply the other archivelog file, it again shows the error
SQL> recover database until cancel using backup controlfile;

ORA-01194: file 1 needs more recovery to be consistent
ORA-01110: data file 1: '/oracle/NEWDB/oradata/NEWDB/system.dbf'
Please tell me why this happening or any solution for this. Moreover i have archivelog file
from 1_1 to 1_14 .
Thanks in advance

Is it possible to perform multiple RECOVER DATABASE UNTIL TIME ?
Hi,
Can I perform multiple roll forwards of transactions on a hot backup of a database?
I want to make a copy of my live oracle database to use on a temporary test server.
I intend to copy the hot backup and transaction logs onto the test server and then roll forward to a certain point in time.
My question is: Can I do multiple roll forwards with the instruction
RECOVER DATABASE UNTIL TIME
when I don't start the database after the first time I rolled forward?
Regards,
PasqualeIf you are on 10g and are collecting flashback logs you can flashback a database backwards, open the database read only to look around, and then flashback backwards/forwards until you open the database resetlogs to finalize the flashback.

Incremental backup and recover with UNTIL SCN options.
Hi there
My question is just about internal RMAN mecanisms.
Suppose i've cumulative method for backup with RMAN.
Reference backup provided by Level 0 (by night)
after that i've file001.arc, file002.arc during day
Baclup cumulative Level 1 (by night)
after that i've file003.arc, file004.arc, file005.arc during day
Baclup cumulative Level 1 (by night)
after that i've file006.arc, file007.arc, file008.arc, file009.arc, file010.arc, file011.arc during day
Baclup cumulative Level 1 (by night)
after that i've file012.arc, file013.arc during day
Baclup cumulative Level 1 (by night)
Suppose we need to recover with UNTIL SCN ... (incident can be identied by SCN #nnnnn, suppose SCN near of file008.arc).
Is Rman use benefits of incremental, or in this case (need to recover before particular SCN) systematically start with Reference backup (Created by Incremental Level 0) and then file001.arc, file002.arc ....
Platform:Oracle 10g
Regards
DenYou recover using backup controlfile when you have lost the controlfile - should be obvious.
You recover until cancel when, for example, you want to manually see the archive logs being applied and decide when to stop recovering (maybe you have lost the archive log backups and want it to stop when you don't have any more left to apply). -
Unable to recover database after rman recovery and database open resetlogs
I am running Oracle 10.2.0.5 on OpenSUSE 9. I have been trying to upgrade the database to 11g, through dbua. I was getting stuck at one point during the Oracle Server install and the upgrade failed and I was forced to restore the database to an earlier backup.
Below is the current place that I am stuck. As you can see I opened the database multiple times and reset the logs. Now I am afraid that my controlfile and redo log backups are out of sync and i can't get them back on track. Before when I actually got the database recovered RMAN would immediately throw:
RMAN-06900: WARNING: unable to generate V$RMAN_STATUS or V$RMAN_OUTPUT row
RMAN-06901: WARNING: disabling update of the V$RMAN_STATUS and V$RMAN_OUTPUT rows
OPA-00600: ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: ...
The database would open with ALTER DATABASE RESETLOGS but any query on non-system tables would fail and throw:
ORA-04045: errors during recompilation/revalidation of LCRS_DEV1.FACILITY_REF
ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [17069], [0x1158ED180], [], [], [],
I hope I have not dug myself into too deep of a hole here.
Here is the trace from my most recent attempt.

What order are Archive logs restored in when RMAN recover database issued
Ok, you have a run block that has restored your level-0 RMAN backup.
Your base datafiles are down on disc.
You are about to start recovery to point in time, lets say until this morning at 07:00am.
run { set until time "TO_DATE('2010/06/08_07:00:00','YYYY/MM/DD_HH24:MI:SS')";
allocate channel d1 type disk;
allocate channel d2 type disk;
allocate channel d3 type disk;
allocate channel d4 type disk;
recover database;
So the above runs, it analyses the earlies SCN required for recovery, checks for incremental backups (none here), works out the archivelog range
required and starts to restore the archive logs. All as expected and works.
My question: Is there a particular order that RMAN will restore the archive logs and is the restore / recover process implemented as per the run block.
i.e Will all required archive logs based on the run block be restored and then the database recovered forward. Or is there something in RMAN that says restore these archive logs, ok now roll forwards, restore some more.
When we were doing this the order of the archive logs coming back seemed to be random but obviously constrained by the run block. Is this an area we need to tune to get recoveries faster for situations where incrementals are not available?
Any inputs on experience welcome. I am now drilling into the documentation for any references there.
ThanksHi there, thanks for the response I checked this and here are the numbers / time stamps on an example:
This is from interpreting the list backup of archivelog commands.
Backupset = 122672
==============
Archive log sequence 120688 low time: 25th May 15:53:07 next time: 25th May 15:57:54
Piece1 pieceNumber=123368 9th June 04:10:38 <-- catalogued by us.
Piece2 pieceNumber=122673 25th May 16:05:18 <-- Original backup on production.
Backupset = 122677
==============
Archive log sequence 120683 low time: 25th May 15:27:50 Next time 25th May 15:32:24 <-- lower sequence number restored after above.
Piece1 PieceNumber=123372 9th June 04:11:34 <-- Catalogued by us.
Piece2 PieceNumber=122678 25th May 16:08:45 <-- Orignial backup on Production.
So the above would show that if catalogue command you could influence the Piece numbering. Therefore the restore order if like you say piece number is the key. I will need to review production as to why they were backed up in different order completed on production. Would think they would use the backupset numbering and then piece within the set / availability.
Question: You mention archive logs are restored and applied and deleted in batches if the volume of archivelogs is large enough to be spread over multiple backup sets. What determines the batches in terms of size / number?
Thanks for inputs. Answers some questions. -
Recover Database in RMAN vs SQL*PLUS
Hello,
Oracle 11.2.0.1, Oracle Linux 5.5 UEK.
I recently did a "recover database" in sql*plus, but an attempt to open the database gave ORA-01113, complaining the system tablespace requried more recovery. Then I used RMAN (nocatalog) and after the same "recover database" command I was able to open the database.
It seems there are differences between SQL*PLUS and RMAN "recover database" command. I have not been able to locate the chapter in the Oracle documentation that explains the difference. I have some ideas, but...
Thanks.
h3. Solution Summary:
The recover command in RMAN compared to SQL*Plus implements a more user friendly processing logic based on the current detected scenario. For instance, a RMAN recover database command may actually perform a "recover database using backup controlfile until cancel" and automatically apply all archived and online redo logs if available. The same can be achieved with the recover command in SQL*plus, but will have to be done manually.
Edited by: Dude on Jan 7, 2011 12:30 PMDude wrote:
I did not remove any datafiles or redo logs. it is the same restore operation as before, and again RMAN "recovery database" succeeds, whereas SQL recover has trouble. This tells me something is different between the two methods. For one, RMAN does not requrie to specify "using backup controlfile".
Maybe someting about "resetlogs" that that RMAN recover can handle and SQL recover not?No,problem is there.If you using rman execute RECOVER DATABASE it also will apply online logs(if available) also and as result you will get complete recovery however you must open database with resetlogs option due to you recovered database using backup controlfile.So also you can recover and open database applying this online logs.After executing RECOVER DATABASE USING BACKUP CONTROLFILE you have to pass full path of online log then press ENTER so log will apply and you can open database with RESETLOGS.See below

RMAN restore UNTIL SCN in DATA GUARD environment
Hello,
OS=RHL5
DB=11.2.0.3 Primary and 1 Physical STANDBY database.
I have a huge application changes tomorrow and its possible that I have the requirement to ROLLBACK the database 5 hours back because the application.
I am thinking to adopt following method from the official Oracle documentation (untilClause):
STARTUP FORCE MOUNT
RUN
SET UNTIL SCN 1418901; ## Any required SCN number will be used here.
RESTORE DATABASE;
RECOVER DATABASE;
ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS;
I will of course take LEVEL0 backup tonight and LEVEL1 backup before the start of work.
My humble question to you is that: If this is the correct method I am adopting? and if yes, then what about Physical standby database? Will there something to restore/recover too? or it's not required or standby database need to create again (which I am afraid of)?
Flash back is not enabled.
Bundle of thanks for the suggestion.
Best Regardshello John-MK,
My humble question to you is that: If this is the correct method I am adopting?
the method is correct but not the BEST PRACTICE...create a RESTORE POINT instead of using SCN. for example:
SET UNTIL RESTORE POINT before_app_changes;
1. drawbacks of using flashback feature are:
a. you need more disk space
b. there is CPU overhead associated with flashback log operation
c.compulsorily need to use fast recovery area and you can not backup flashback log
d.others..
but my own opinion, i think the advantage out weight the drawbacks, since you are paying for it already
2. if the standby database did not apply redo data past the new resetlogs SCN, then you do not need to re-build. no manual intervention

Recover database with missing archivelog...
Oracle10gR2 RHEL 4
Hi,
I am having a problem. I'm trying to recover my database to an previous point in time but the archive logs that I need were accidentally removed. Is there anyway I can restore it to a previous point in time? None of the SCN's are working no matter how far I go back (note: I can created the database lastweek so it can't go further than that).
Thanks

Hi, I hope someone can explain to me what happened with my recovery process. I am running Oracle 8i.
I dropped a tablespace on 11/22 @ 09:11. I first tried to do a full restore without restoring the control file (I was told that I should keep the current control file in order to apply any logs).
RMAN> run {
2> allocate channel d1 type disk;
3> set limit channel d1 kbytes 100000;
4> allocate channel d2 type disk;
5> set limit channel d2 kbytes 100000;
6> allocate channel d3 type disk;
7> set limit channel d3 kbytes 100000;
8> restore database;
9> alter database mount;
10> recover database;
11> alter database open resetlogs;
12> release channel d1;
13> release channel d2;
14> release channel d3;
15> }
I received the following error:
RMAN-03002: failure during compilation of command
RMAN-03013: command type: recover
RMAN-03006: non-retryable error occurred during execution of command: recover(1)
RMAN-07004: unhandled exception during command execution on channel default

RMAN-10031: ORA-19654 occurred during call to DBMS_BACKUP_RESTORE.SWITCHTOCOPY
I could not open the database, next I did a point in time restore with the control file:
RMAN> run {
2> allocate channel d1 type disk;
3> set limit channel d1 kbytes 100000;
4> allocate channel d2 type disk;
5> set limit channel d2 kbytes 100000;
6> allocate channel d3 type disk;
7> set limit channel d3 kbytes 100000;
8> restore controlfile;
9> alter database mount;
10> set until time = '2004-11-22:09:00:00';
11> restore database;
12> recover database;
13> release channel d1;
14> release channel d2;
15> release channel d3;
16> }
I received the following error:
RMAN-03002: failure during compilation of command
RMAN-03013: command type: recover
RMAN-03002: failure during compilation of command
RMAN-03013: command type: recover(4)
RMAN-06053: unable to perform media recovery because of missing log
RMAN-06025: no backup of log thread 1 seq 8 scn 263762 found to restore
I could not open the database, I received the following error when I tried to open with resetlogs:
RMAN-06003 .....:ORA-01113 file 1 needs media recovery
'/d01/oradata/dr_cms/system01.dbf'
I was done for the day and the system was shutdown, including the AIX server. When I started everything this morning, I did an 'alter database open resetlogs' and the database opened and the tablespace that I dropped was back!!!
Does this make sense? Can anyone tell me what happened?!
Why should a reboot of the system cause the database to open?No, you do not have to reboot the OS to get start the database. To know what exactly passed it was needed to see at the OS level the datafiles found in disk during the several intents you did for recover the database.

Problem in recovering database
I Have Oracle Database 10g (10.2.0.1.0) on Windows Server 2003
I have taken full hot RMAN backup of database.
I have copied the backup files from flash recovery area.
I have one other Machine having windows server 2003 And Oracle 10g Same version. I have copied the backup files from first machine to Flash Recovery Area folder on second machine.
Now i am trying to restore the database of first machine to second machine.
1. I have created a new instance on second machice with same name as in fiirst machine.
2. I have created one ORA password file as well.
3. SET ORACLE_SID=<name of DB as it was in first machine>
4. RMAN TARGET sys/<password given in newly ORA pwd file>@<DB name> nocatalog
5. SET DBID=<dbid of old database>
6. STARTUP NOMOUNT FORCE
7. RESTORE SPFILE TO PFILE '<path of new pfile>' from '<path where backup files are there>';
8. CREATE UDUMP,BDUMP,CDUMP,PFILE,ORADATA FOLDERS where required;
9. SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE;
10. STARTUP NOMOUNT PFILE='<path of newly created pfile>';
11 RESTORE CONTROLFILE FROM '<path of backup files>';
12. ALTER DATABASE MOUNT;
Everything work fine till here
Now my next step was
13. RESTORE DATABASE;
Then it gives error like:-
RMAN> restore database;

Firstly i copied backup files to flash recovery area, then i copied files to 'D:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\database' as well. Because i have done it in 9i, in 9i i copied the backup files to this backup folder then while doing restore RMAN succesfully takes file from this folder & restores the database. but in 10g RMAN is not recognising the path of backup. How this problem can be solved? Or is this some different problem which i am not getting?
Waiting for reply..Hi ORADBA,
Thanks for your response. Your solution worked. Actually there was a difference the Oracle installation on server from which i was taking backup is on E drive.
And the server on which i am trying to restore that database has Oracle installation files on D drive. That's why this confusion occurred.
But i have one query again. I am not able to recover my database fully.
Firstly i typed restore database command that worked. Thereafter i tried recover database command. that commant resulted in an error as given below. Than i typed command archive log list on SQL promt, from there i found the information of latest archive log. then i tried recover database until logseq 484 thread 1. That also didn't work. In the same situation i tried to open database i was able to open database using command alter database open resetlogs. I suppose i was not able to recover the database fully. Hi can i recover my database fully?
waiting for reply. Thanks in advance.
