Recovering Permissions on /usr/lib - pkgchk or perl script?

We have a SUN 280R running solaris 8 which accidently had a 'chmod-R 644 /usr/lib' run on it. The result was that on reboot, the system could not 'execute' or 'find' specific libraries such as ld.so.1 and some files associated with the veritas volume software we have installed on the system. We have been able to chmod most of /usr/lib 755 including ld.so.1. We would like to restore permissions to prevent any system stablity problems. so what is the better method to use here?
1.) do a grep /usr/lib on /var/sadm/install/contents, pull out all the package names with an awk statement and then run them in a loop with pkgchk -fa?
2.) Run a perl script which parses /var/sadm/install/contents, pulls out all the individual files in /usr/lib, and run a chmod <perm> $file on each file name?
Which method would be less destructive? My concern is that running pkgchk on all packages associated with /usr/lib may 'fix' something, or modify something which would prevent the system from coming up.
What key files in /usr/lib would prevent the system from coming back up, if permissions were incorrect? (i.e 644)? Should a chmod <perm> <file> for each file in the contents file for all files in /usr/lib resolve this problem completely?
Any advice would be appreciated.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it.

  • "Permissions Differ on "usr/lib/ruby" ?!

    I'm using Leopard. After a recent startup problem with a Macbook I ran Disk Utilities, Verify Disk Permissions, and got the following message:
    "Permissions differ on "usr/lib/ruby", should be lrwxr-xr-x, they are drwxr-xr-x."
    1) What does this mean?
    2) Is it a serious security issue (i.e. malware)?
    3) What do I do about it?
    Thanks

    "If you use the menu item "Go" and select the "Go to folder..." option, you can type in:
    /usr/lib
    and check to see if ruby is an alias or an actual folder. It should appear as an alias in the Finder,"
    ============================================================================
    Ok, did that so I'll give you an long list of stuff I found, if you have the patience to go through it all.
    Finder > Go > Go to folder > /usr/lib. There are 4 Ruby aliases (with arrow symbol) there: "libruby.1.dylib" , "libsvnswigruby-1.dylib" , "libsvnswigruby-1.0.dylib" and "libsvnswigruby-1.0.0.0.dylib".
    AND, yes, there is also an ACTUAL RUBY FOLDER (blue, no arrow) in usr/lib.
    This Ruby folder breaks down into the following subfolders: (Finder>Library>)Ruby Folder (blue)> site_ruby > 1.8 > osx and powerpc-darwin 8.0 (two folders). In this "osx" folder there are 9 .rb files called active_record.rb, addressbook.rb, appkit.rb, cocoa.rb, coredate.rb, foundation.rb, NMOSXDockHelper.rb, qtkit.rb and webkit.rb. In the powerpc-darwin8.0 folder is a rubycocoa.bundle icon (like a lego brick).
    The followinig actual folders (blue, no arrow)) are also present in usr/lib: dtrace, groff, java, mecab, openmpi, pam, php, pkgconfig, podcastproducer, sa, samba, sas12, sqlite3, system, and zsh.
    =================================================================
    "and the original folder is supposed to be in
    "/System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby"
    You might also check that location to see if the ruby folder is there."
    ==============================================================================
    Yes, it's also in this location. There are 2 main Ruby folders (blue, nop arrow) in System/ Library/Frameworks: one called 'RubyCocoa.framework', the other Ruby.framework. Ruby.framework > 1.8 > usr > (here there are three more folders 'bin' , 'lib' and 'share') lib > ruby. Here, in this ruby folder are aliases (site_ruby' and 'user_gems' as well as actual folders called 'gems' and 1.8. In 1.8 there are further subfolders named bigdecimal, cgi, date, digest and such which are NOT in the Ruby folder in usr/lib.

    I have no idea whether anything in the Mac OS actually uses ruby stuff or not. Ruby is a programming language, and Ruby on Rails is used in web development.

    By the way, I performed the Safari 3.1 update, Garageband Update 4.1.2 , iPhoto Update 7.1.2 , and Airport Utility 5.3.1 update two days before this all happened. I rebooted after the updates were fully installed, used the macbook (starting and rebooting 2 or 3 times duringthe course of the day, after which everything seemed fine). Two days later when I tried to start the Macbook I got a very long blue screen (in excess of 7-8 minutes) and had to try starting several times before I could log on. Then I ran the disk utility and got the Ruby permissions message. I've performed all the disk repair stuff and the message remains.
    I searched the Internet and could find no other examples of this happening. So, questions remain:
    1. Is there ANY possible way this could be malware, spyware, etc.?
    2. Any ideas as to how this change could have happened on my system?
    Thanks!

  • How do I recover /usr/lib in Solaris 10

    I inadvertently deleted /usr/lib directory. Is there a way to recover this? Maybe by booting from the install DVD?
    This is on a Solaris 10 11/06 SPARC install.
    Thanks.

    Thanks for your input.
    Correct. I don't have a back up. Just built the system yesterday, but have done a lot of work since.
    This is strange. I was able to mount the file system after booting from DVD. I can list the /usr/lib directory and everything looks fine. However, when I try to boot as normal I get the following errors and it locks (at least no keyboard function):
    Rebooting with command: boot
    Hardware Watchdog Enabled
    WARNING: exec(/sbin/init) failed (file not found).
    (Could not start init) Program terminated
    {0} OK
    ERROR:/pci@1f,700000/... Externally Initiated Reset has occurred.
    ERROR:/pci@1f,700000/... Last Trap : Externally Initiated Reset
    Here is the sequence of events that started this whole mess:
    I tried to make a symbolic link at the root level to /usr/lib
    ln -s /usr/lib /lib
    Then when I did an ls -l on / the lib did not show as a link but as a regular directory.
    So I tried to remove (not thinking clearly):
    rm /lib
    The system of course tells me it is a directory - so being the idiot that I am I did:
    rm -r /lib
    Then I started getting this type of error:
    #ls -alt
    ls: Cannot find /usr/lib/ld.so.1
    Don't know for sure what I did or how to fix it.
    Sorry for the long post but thought it might help solve the problem.

  • Any way to recover /usr/lib/?

    Hey, I deleted the whole content of /usr/lib/ instead of just one folder.
    Would there be any way to recover it? I did try using the Archlinux Fallback img. Only got me to console, can't login as it says root is an incorrect password.
    Sorry if this is face-punching to read, wrote it using my iPhone.
    Thanks in advance.

    I'd chroot into the system's root partition and, manually install pacman using a live cd, then I'd try if I could see the manually installed packages (pacman -Qqe) and maybe ignore the AUR packages (as shown by pacman -Qqem) and then install all those manually installed packages again.
    Why did you fool around with that folder anyway? Is your second name pacman? :-D

    What is this supposed to mean? Should I ignore it?

    On closer inspection, there are many more warnings there. Like:
    libtool: warning: remember to run 'libtool --finish /usr/lib/gvfs'
    libtool: warning: relinking 'libgvfsdbus.la'
    Makefile:1475: warning: overriding recipe for target 'check'
    Makefile:1295: warning: ignoring old recipe for target 'check'

  • [solved] compiz-core upgrade issue: missing /usr/lib/compiz/libcore.so

    After upgrading from compiz-core 0.8.8-3 to 0.8.8-4, but it's persisting even downgrading I got a segfault for the missing file.

    Anyone can help me tracing in which package the missing file is located (if it's not in compiz-core)?

    I managed to solve the issue commenting the --indirect-rendering flag and installing and launching driconf to create a default ~/.drirc file.
    I just noticed that in the same upgrade I got intel-dri from 8.x to 9.x version, maybe it's related.
    Launching a terminal in .xinitrc and manually launching
    LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose compiz --debug --replace ccp
    show me a lot of errors, but it's working, and I don't need anymore the --indirect-rendering flag (in the past I put that flag in the command because of the bad performance that compiz had without).

  • Mistakenly overwrote some *.dylib files in /usr/lib

    Hello all. I made a foolish mistake while working on my iMac remotely (via SSH). I realized how stupid I was right as I did it--but, of course, it was already too late. So now I have to figure out what to do to get things back in working order.
    Here's what I did... I copied the following three *.dylib files into /usr/lib/:
    i386_libstdc++.6.dylib
    libgcc_s.1.dylib
    libstdc++.6.dylib
    I am not 100% sure if I overwrote existing files (as I don't have access to another Mac at the moment to see if these files exist by default) but I think that is the case. After I did it, the most simple of commands no longer worked. "ls" gave me this:
    dyld: Symbol not found: dyld_stub_binder
      Referenced from: /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib
      Expected in: /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib
    in /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib
    Trace/BPT trap: 5
    I do not yet know if this has made the GUI non-functional as well (like I said, I was doing this remotely). But as soon as someone is availble on the other end I will have them check. If the GUI is funcitonal, would it be possible to just delete the offending files via Finder, and copy over versions (if another version of these files indeed exists by default) from another Lion machine? (Unfortunately, I don't have a Time Machine backup for this Mac so that is not an option).
    If the GUI is not functional and/or this will not work for some other reason, I suppose I will need to use Target Disk Mode to retrieve my data from the machine and rebuild it from scratch?
    At any rate, if anyone can give me any troubleshooting steps or other suggestions for how to tackel this issue, that would be very appreciated.

    Do you think a restore is necessary? Is there a reason removing/replacing the offending files will not work? (I did verify that I have normal access via the GUI, by the way--so far these librarie seem to only affect CLI commands, though I wouldn't be surprised if other odd things popped up too).
    If I *do* have to do a restore, would it be possible for me to set up Time Machine, back up the machine as-is right now, restore the machine to a factory state, then use Time Machine to just recover my user data? Or maybe kist clone the disk to an external drive? Or is just a plain old copy to an external drive the best option? Just want to make sure I have an understanding of the best route here so that I can save the data (which is mainly just Applicaitons and iMovie projects and events).
    As for "mucking" with it remotely--if I couldn't do that, it would ruin all my fun, now wouldn't it?! :-) I'm a linux admin for a living so thus why the Terminal is very comfortable (perhaps TOO comfortable in this case!) for me, yet I am less familiar with things like Time Machine. I'm definitely about to learn though! If I had Time Machine it would make recovering the proper versions of these files very simple, no?

  • Weird user/group in /usr/lib/*, pacman cannot "mmap"

    Hello,
    i'm getting some errors i really dont understand. I was trying out flash 10 (beta), which worked ok. The next day i tried to log in, but kde 3 didn't started, as stated in ~/.xinitrc. Besides that, loggin into console as my standard user and doing a "startx" worked. Next i tried to update arch, which gave me the following errors:
    (1/1) checking for file conflicts [################################] 100%
    (1/1) upgrading pacman [################################] 100%

    /sbin/ldconfig: Cannot mmap file /usr/lib/libusb.so.
    I looked up these files and found some weird permissions, users and groups for some files in /usr/lib. (I dont think "libtiff.so.3" should be ~2GB )

    So far this happend only to files in /usr/lib. Well, it could be, that the beta plugin from adobe messed these things up. But... how to clean this up? Would it be the best to remove all packages that belong to these files, then manually remove these files, and reinstall everything? Or is this some known problem?
    Besides that: I am using ext3 and i had a 4,3 GB file on my system that day, i tried out the flash beta, if that means anything.

    It is very strange. Run fsck on this filesystem and then execute
    find / -nouser -exec chown root {} \;
    find / -nogroup -exec chgrp root {} \;
    I think this should fix your problem.

  • /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found

    I am trying to run the firefox from firefox-4.0.tar.bz2 on CentOS 5.6 and get the error message,
    ./firefox-bin: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by firefox/libxul.so)
    Firefox does not start.
    I thought having a copy of the library in the local directory would help, so I made a link:
    ln -s /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6.0.8 libstdc++.so.6
    then I got the error message,
    ./firefox-bin: /firefox/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by firefox/libxul.so)
    My version of glibc is:
    $ rpm -q glibc
    glibc-2.5-58.el5_6.2
    glibc-2.5-58.el5_6.2

    Yes, that led to my solution. There was a lot of noise in the two links, but some solid signal. Ths solution came from dietux's reference in /questions/777306 Bug 621704 to http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=2075033 :
    1. Download the Fedora 9 package of libstdc++-4.3.0-8.i386.rpm from http://archives.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/releases/9/Fedora/i386/os/Packages/libstdc++-4.3.0-8.i386.rpm .
    2. Unpack the package in your Firefox 4 directory with relative paths (does not require super user permissions):
    [firefox]$ rpm2cpio libstdc++-4.3.0-8.i386.rpm | cpio -i --make-directories
    3. Move the library and its link to the Firefox 4 directory:
    [firefox]$ mv usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6* .
    [NOTE: this is a RELATIVE path -- it has no leading slash.]
    4. Run Firefox 4:
    ./firefox
    Thank you for your help!
    Craig
    P.S. I do agree with the posters in [[https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=621704| Bug 621704]] that CentOS 5.x is NOT obsolete. The whole point of CentOS (and RHEL) is that it will be around for awhile. I left Fedora for CentOS because it changed too much.

  • [SOLVED] ldconfig: /usr/lib/libOpenCL.so.1 is not a symbolic link

    Hi. I use 64 bits arch with gnome and the ATI driver 13.6 beta installed from the AMD binary and I usually execute steam. Everything seem fine, but recently I receive a message when I update any package with pacman
    ldconfig: /usr/lib/libOpenCL.so.1 is not a symbolic link
    However the update seems correct, only that warning message. I've checked the propietary of the file
    pacman -Qo /usr/lib/libOpenCL.so.1
    /usr/lib/libOpenCL.so.1 is owned by libcl 1.1-3

    On my system, that file IS a symbolic link:
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 Aws 14 2012 /usr/lib/libOpenCL.so -> /usr/lib/libOpenCL.so.1*
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 27 Aws 14 2012 /usr/lib/libOpenCL.so.1 -> /usr/lib/libOpenCL.so.1.0.0*
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 21K Aws 14 2012 /usr/lib/libOpenCL.so.1.0.0*
    [Aside: I know that the "Aws" isn't English but I hardly ever pass LC_ALL=C myself just because so little is translated into my interface language . Dates is almost it. ]
    I would try reinstalling libcl and take it from there.

    Hi
    Using Oracle 10.2 , HP-UX 11.23, ECC 6.0 SR3. I am running sapinst with homogeneous system copy option. Database already restored and opened properly. Getting error during backup/restore step -creating the password file. Looking at the sapinst logs it says /usr/lib/hpux64/dld.so: Unable to find library 'libclntsh.so.10.1'
    The Library Paths defined are below:

    I have checked OSS Note 819829. Verified the path /oracle/client/10x_64/
    all the files look good. The permissions and ownership are all correct under /oracle
    The sapinst is supposed to install the client.

    Any idea experts why it cant find the library?

    Thanks. Actually its the other way round. The 10.2.0.5 you see is the Client version. The database is at 10.2.0.2. But thats not an issue. This is resolved now. Issue was sapinst was running with root and trying to start the listener and create the password file which I could do successfully manually with oraSID but not with root. Not sure why sapinst did not switch to orasid to do that
    Had to do two things:
    1) Set the correct environment variables for root (it was already good for sidadm and orasid bu must be done for root as well)
    2) Recreate the links (with ln -fs) for an older installation we had that was recently uninstalled.

  • Root password and /usr/lib/cron/tabs folder

    /usr/lib/cron/tabs is owned by root with the permissions of "drwx------ 2 root". My user on this machine is an admin but I cannot see the contents of /usr/lib/cron/tabs and I do not know the root pw. As an admin on this machine how do I reset the root PW or get into the /usr/lib/cron/tabs folder?
    Thanks.

    you can use
    *sudo ls /usr/lib/cron/tabs*
    with your admin password.
    You can reset root password by booting from the leopard install DVD and using "Reset Password" utility.

  • Moving /usr/lib directory

    Hi all,
    I have a SUN Ultra Sparc 60 running Solaris 7.
    I tried to move the /usr/lib directory to /opt/usr/lib in order to get more disk space in /usr because if was almost full (it was not a good idea, I know it now). My idea was to make later a soft link in /usr to /opt/usr/lib, but when I tried to do it (ln -s /opt/usr/lib) this and almost all the other commands didn,t work. It is logical now, they can't find the needed libraries in /usr/lib because they are not there now. I tried some things to move /usr/lib to its original place but I didn't have luck (cp mv, ...). Finally I restarted the Workstation and, of course it couldn't boot. I can only enter in the System Maintenence Mode like root. I can't do so much there. Worst, I can't enter in the /opt/usr directory and fsch doesn't work neither.
    My question is, is there any way to recover the system from this situation??
    Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
    Alex
    PS: I have another identical system working close to this one, if that can help in anything.

    You can move any directory's contents to another directory using the following commands:
    cd <from_directory>
    tar cf -. | (cd <to_directory>; tar xvf -)
    In your case, you need to boot the corrupted system into single-user mode, mount all volumes and then manipulate the directories.Generally speaking, what happened to you is the result of a very odd UNIX sysadmin's misconception: everybody thinks that under UNIX hard drives need to be partitioned. They don't know why, but they "have always done it that way". When you are planning the system's layout it is very difficult to predict exactly how much space a particular directory will take up. And here is the best part -- they recommend that "/" partition be set to about 100 MBytes. Just imagine what happens if you create a "/big_files" directory (or installer does)! Partitioning also increases the drive contention because the drive heads need to constantly jump between different partitions (the system doesn't know that the partitions are not "real" harddrives and tries to read/write on all of them simultaneously). The solution is -- not to partition the drives. Just put everything on "/" partition which is easy to set to 100 GBytes these days. This way you are safe from running out of space in "/big_files" directory (at least for a while).
    You may be wondering, what about the "swap" partition? the answer is very unorthodox -- don't do it! If you really need swap -- create a swap file. The only good reason to put swap on a separate volume is when you actually have a separate hard drive just for swap. Otherwise the drive contention will kill you. Once we're at it, how big would you say the swap file should be on a system with 2GB of real RAM? "They" say it should be twice the real RAM. Well, that's ridiculous -- you need swap because you don't have enough RAM, but by their logic, the more RAM you have the more swap you need. Again, unorthodox solution -- if you have 2 (3, 4... 8) GB of real RAM you don't need swap at all. Use your cabesa, UNIX computer science is very old -- it does not neccessarily apply to modern computers.

  • /usr/lib/pt_chmod changes permission during migration

    Hi guys,
    Looks like I have the honor to open the first thread in this category :)
    OK, here we go: I have server A and B, both running SunOS 5.10. On server A a native zone is created, and a few users added. I check that I can ssh to this zone and the test is successful. Now, I move the zone to server B, (stop the zone, detach, "pax" it, unpack on server B, attach, reconfigure IP and hostname, boot). I can still zlogin / telnet to this migrated zone, but ssh does not work anymore. The error is :"Server refused to allocate pty"
    Now, I've found out that on the first server, I had something like:
    # ls -l /usr/lib/pt_chmod
    -r-s--x--x   1 root     root       10012 Jan 24  2007 /usr/lib/pt_chmodwhile on server B :
    # ls -l /usr/lib/pt_chmod
    -r-x--x--x   1 root     root       10012 Jan 24  2007 /usr/lib/pt_chmodChanging back the permission solves the problem, but I still would like to know what causes this....
    Many thanks,
    kido

    Both servers are identical : hardware and software.
    Zones are created as "whole root".
    On both global zones, the permissions are correct. After zone creation, the permissions are also correct. The difference appears exactly after moving a zone.
    I didn't run any security-check scripts, cause the servers are isolated.
    I might be something with "pax" , cause I just noticed that another "classical" example of script using suid bit - passwd - lacks of correct permissions:
    -on global zone:
    ls -l /usr/bin/passwd
    -r-sr-sr-x   1 root     sys        27244 Aug  7  2009 /usr/bin/passwd-on native zone:
    # ls -l /usr/bin/passwd
    -r-xr-xr-x   1 root     root       27244 Aug  7  2009 /usr/bin/passwdI'm using "/usr/bin/pax -w -x xustar" to archive the zone and "/usr/bin/pax -r " to unpack the archive...Maybe pax cannot preserve suid bits?

  • Not yet solved, /usr/lib/systemd/systemd does not exit

    Hi,
    I was on 3.8.2 kernel, and did a full system backup with rsync to later upgrade, but after upgrading and rebooting, it just shows me
    Error: Root device mounted successfully, but /bin/systemd does not exist.
    Bailing out, you are on your own. Good Luck
    tty's could not initialize [*or something similar, I'm not sure]
    [root /]#
    Then I just replaced my system with the backup I did earlier. But it shows the same
    I did search for info but no clue.
    Currently trying with an older backup.
    Thanks in advance

    The initscript tests if init is executable, so "does not exist" could also mean "is not executable"
    Somehow your root has a problem with its execute permissions. Did you somehow remove them, /usr/lib/systemd/systemd should be 755 or "-rwxr-xr-x"?
    While I'm not sure why is this modified, maybe the backups I did doesn't hold the attributes, I'm storing them in an NTFS partition but it can store the attributes doesn't it?
    Well I changed the attributes as you mentioned, but then it makes me wonder if then pretty much the other root files are too with other attributes..which is really bad.
    Nevertheless I changed it and now it shows permission denied and a kernel panic, sigh.
    Here is an image of it: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/689/dsc06698b.jpg

    @Pantera
    The problem here is kinda different, while at the beggining it was the problem you mention and solution, now the thing is that it says that "/usr/lib/systemd/systemd does not exit" and not /bin/systemd which it was in the beggining. thanks though.
