Not yet solved, /usr/lib/systemd/systemd does not exit

Hi,
I was on 3.8.2 kernel, and did a full system backup with rsync to later upgrade, but after upgrading and rebooting, it just shows me
Error: Root device mounted successfully, but /bin/systemd does not exist.
Bailing out, you are on your own. Good Luck
tty's could not initialize [*or something similar, I'm not sure]
[root /]#
Then I just replaced my system with the backup I did earlier. But it shows the same
I did search for info but no clue.
Currently trying with an older backup.

The initscript tests if init is executable, so "does not exist" could also mean "is not executable"
Somehow your root has a problem with its execute permissions. Did you somehow remove them, /usr/lib/systemd/systemd should be 755 or "-rwxr-xr-x"?
While I'm not sure why is this modified, maybe the backups I did doesn't hold the attributes, I'm storing them in an NTFS partition but it can store the attributes doesn't it?
Well I changed the attributes as you mentioned, but then it makes me wonder if then pretty much the other root files are too with other attributes..which is really bad.
Nevertheless I changed it and now it shows permission denied and a kernel panic, sigh.

The problem here is kinda different, while at the beggining it was the problem you mention and solution, now the thing is that it says that "/usr/lib/systemd/systemd does not exit" and not /bin/systemd which it was in the beggining. thanks though.

    And whether I suspend with the kde suspend thingy or with systemctl suspend, this script does not run on resume from suspend.

    I did some further testing with my system, it appears that using the '*)' specifically causes a "Job for suspend.target canceled" on resume, which could be the problem you are facing. It could also be that the syntax for the pre and post are explicitly given, otherwise I don't see a reason why would it print that message.
    Given the code:
    #!/bin/sh
    #can also be /bin/bash
    case $1/$2 in
    echo "a $1 with $2"
    esac
    Works and does not produce the above (red) message.
    However combining "pre/*)" and "*)" generates the message, regardless of the shell.
    I was doing all the suspends with systemctl suspend
    So I'd suggest putting a lot of echo statements in your script and then observe the output of journalctl -b -u systemd-suspend (this is where the echo statements get logged) and check for any errors it might throw. And try to use the pre/*) post/*) if you didn't try that yet.

  • [Solved] Make systemctl find .service file in /usr/lib/systemd/user?

    I thought this had always worked, but it seems that systemctl cannot see `.service` files that are in my `/usr/lib/systemd/user` folder and I can't figure out why:
    $ locate redshift-gtk.service
    /usr/lib/systemd/user/redshift-gtk.service
    $ systemctl status redshift-gtk
    ● redshift-gtk.service
    Loaded: not-found (Reason: No such file or directory)
    Active: inactive (dead)
    I have already looked at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Systemd/User which seems to tell me to check sytemctl --user status but that appears to be loaded and working fine, I have a feeling I'm missing something obvious but can't figure out what it is. How do I make systemctl include this directory?
    $ systemctl --user status

  • [SOLVED] /usr/lib/aspell-0.60/xray.cset does not exist...

    Update:
    I'd still like to understand what this /usr/lib/aspell-0.60/xray.cset file is all about. But apearantly I don't really need it. I fired up my xubuntu installation to spellcheck the LyX document. And because the  ~/.aspell.en.pws on Arch had more added words in it I was about to copy it over the Xubuntu copy... Fortunately I compared them first and noticed that the working Xubuntu  ~/.aspell.en.pws  was a 212 line file beginning with "personal_ws-1.1 en 211" (evidently reflecting the number of words @ 1 per line) while the broken ~/.aspell.en.pws on Arch was a 299 line file beginning with "personal_ws-1.1 en 299 xray" Considering I had recently deleted one word/line from it the only part that didn't make sense was the word xray... changed that line to "personal_ws-1.1 en 298" and aspell is working again.
    But I still don't know where the word "xray" came from, nor why aspell thought it meant there should be an "/usr/lib/aspell-0.60/xray.cset" file... ???????

    I think I did something stupid... And it broke aspell.
    What I did was: I was spellchecking a LyX document (which uses aspell) and
    I accidentally added a misspelled word. Whenever I've done that in the past
    I simply opened my ~/.aspell.en.pws with vim, and deleted the misspelled
    word from the list. But this time I'd been using aspell indirectly and
    while I closed LyX's pop-up spellchecking utility before I switched to a
    terminal window, I didn't close LyX itself. (I didn't think it would matter
    as long as it wasn't actively spellchecking at the time...) Well I got rid
    of the misspelled word OK. When I switched back to LyX every thing seemed
    to work normally until I pressed <F7> to start up the spellchecker again.
    At that point LyX crashed...
    When I try to use aspell from the command line in a terminal window I get
    this:

  • [SOLVED]/usr/lib/arch-tempfiles line 106: install:command not found

    Hi everyone!
    This is my boot.log

    It says"/usr/lib/initscripts/arch-tmpfiles:line 106: install:command not found".This is leading to problems such as dbus and network manager not being started(even manually),no shutdown option,not able to 'open' log files without sudo  etc.
    I think a possible reason for this is that I had messed up with symlinks.I had issued the command
    sudo ln -s /bin/install /usr/bin/install
    .Then I had used
    cd /bin/
    unlink install
    Now,I find that /bin/install and /usr/bin/install does not exist.(I have deleted them!) .How can I fix this up?Any help would be appreciated.

    Reinstall coreutils (or manually extract install from the package and put it in /usr/bin).

    I got fed up typing the password every time I push some files to a server with scp, as I do it a lot with this project. Public/private key pair is not really an option (read: I do not want to send anything else but the web app files to the server) as the host is not my own, nor it is my client's. Instead it is my client's client's host.
    So I installed filezilla. And got this:

    Perhaps some alternatives? What's your favorite GUI FTP client? Mine's WinSCP, but it's only for windows AFAIK.
    I have used gFTP in the past, but the gui design is just horrible. For example ctrl+v is some key binding to do something else than paste from clipboard. And then there is no drag&drop. It also crashes if I open more than one file to edit at the same time. All these little details drive me nuts with gFTP.

    I hoped it would be ok to forget about it, but no such luck. Now I'm trying to compile amule-cvs from yaourt:

    Compilation then stops. So, are the two problems related? I've tried the main amule package in extra for the time being, but when I run it I get 'bus error' from the console, so I really would like the cvs version.

    The files are owned by wxgtk-2, so I just made sure all the corrupt versions of the package were removed from my cache.
    sudo rm /var/cache/pacman/pkg/wxgtk-2.*
    Then do a 'pacman -Sy wxgtk' and choose to upgrade if need be. If all goes well you will no longer get the warnings from pacman, and both the binary and cvs packages will install and run fine.

  • [Solved]/usr/lib/libGL.so.1 symlink keeps changing on package installs

    Hello,
    I recently switched my desktop from using the proprietary nvidia drivers to nouveau. After doing so, I experienced seg faults in many applications (emacs, xfce4-session). I tracked down the problem to be caused by the /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 symlink pointing to the wrong file. I noticed that if I looked in /usr/lib, I would see libGL.so.1 -> libGL.so.190.42 when in fact it should have been pointing to mesa-libGL.so.1.2.0.  ( https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=174663 )
    Changing the symlink by hand ( sudo ln -sf mesa-libGL.so.1.2.0 libGL.so.1 ) makes everything work again, but every time I install something new the symlink goes back to libGL.so.190.42.
    What is causing this symlink to change on every package install and how can I stop this from happening?

  • Why are systemd startup scripts under /usr/lib and not /etc? [SOLVED]

    Just out of curiosity: why are systemd configuration files (startup scripts, or whatever they are called) in /usr/lib/systemd/system/ and not somewhere under /etc?
    After all, they are configuration files and not libraries.
    It may simply be my lack of knowledge of the standard linux filesystem layout, so please enlighten me.

  • [SOLVED] systemd uses cronie.service in /usr/lib instead of /etc

    I've been having a little problem getting systemd to use my custom service file for cronie. I've tried doing the same thing with ntpd and a few other services, and they all work fine.
    [root@garrett garrett]# cp /{usr/lib,etc}/systemd/system/cronie.service
    [root@garrett garrett]# systemctl reenable cronie.service
    rm '/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/cronie.service'
    ln -s '/etc/systemd/system/cronie.service' '/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/cronie.service'
    [root@garrett garrett]# systemctl status cronie.service
    cronie.service - Periodic Command Scheduler
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/cronie.service; enabled)

    It appears to have something to do with the crond.service symlink to cronie.service, since when I remove it, systemd will use the service file in /etc.

  • [SOLVED]MPD, PulseAudio & Systemd/User

    Since the advent of skype 4.3 I've had to switch to using pulseaudio. Things seems to be working fine except for the interaction between pulseaudio and mpd. My goal is to attain the same functionality as I had before when I was just using alsa. The main problem seems to be that the mpd daemon starts before pulseaudio. This means that when I reboot, for example, my music doesn't automatically keep playing. However if I toggle mpc (or open ncmpcpp and unpause) then it works fine.
    What I have done
    1) I installed mpd using the script found on the wiki
    1a) copied ~/.config/mpd/mpd.conf to /etc/mpd.conf and uncomment #user line so it runs as my user
    1b) enabled the mpd service with systemctl so it starts on boot, as directed to from 1)
    2) Applied the workaround detailed here to make pulseaudio play nice with mpd
    From what I can understand this results in the mpd daemon using the /etc/mpd.conf file which mirrors my local one (but I think the process is still started as root?)
    If I don't do 2) then I get a problem where if I try to open pavucontrol I get an error saying I'm unable to connect and the system feels very unresponsive. Two second delays navigating around in thunar for example.

    For now I have added in

    to my ~/.xinitrc as a work around to get pulse and mpd to work together properly. However it doesn't seem to work all the time. If I leave my music playing then when I reboot the system with reboot it seems that somtimes the state is being saved as paused, and other times as play. I suppose I could just mpc toggle without checking, but I don't want a situation where if I happen to not be playing music that every time I reboot my music starts playing.
    Other things I have tried are;
    A) not using pulseaudio with mpd.
    B) not using systemd to manage mpd. Instead I manually started it in .xinitrc and pointed it to my ~/.config/mpd/mpd.conf file. I believe this means it runs as my own user instead of as root. When I did this I commented the username line and also undid 2) from above in ~/.config/mpd/mpd.conf
    The problem with A) is that if I use alsa with mpd, mpd hogs my soundcard. My card becomes unselectable in pavucontrol and I cannot use it with pulseaudio., meanng no skype. The benefit of doing this (this is how I used to do it before I needed pulseaudio) is I have no problems with mpd's state being saved incorrectly.
    The problem with B) is the mpdstate is saved incorrectly when for example I issue reboot. I can reproduce this by changing my currently played song then rebooting. When I boot back up mpd resumes playback from the previous session instead of recognizing the last thing I was playing. I had a search around on the forums and I found this issue which seems to describe what is happening. There doesn't seem to be a solution there instead a suggestion to user systemd (which I would like to do!) instead to manage mpd. Rasi's post details a unit file but I'm unsure what to do with this.
    Looking at the wiki it seems like maybe I am supposed to provide this file so that it overwrites the default mpd.service unit. So I followed the steps listed there. First I created the directory /etc/systemd/system/mpd.d/ then made the user.conf file inside. I tried just putting the additional arguments in
    [Service]
    User=YOUR_USER
    PAMName=system-local-login
    I also remember trying to overwrite the entire [Service] section of the original by using
    [Service]
    User=YOUR_USER
    PAMName=system-local-login
    ExecStart=
    ExecStart=/usr/bin/mpd --no-daemon
    because I think just adding the addtional parameters might not have worked. But I'm not sure on this point, maybe both ways worked. This seemed to work but I had the same problem as above. The state was still being saved incorrectly sometimes when I rebooted. I would get a previous session instead of the most recent change. So I tried the other method for overwriting systemd unit files and made the file /etc/systemd/system/mpd.service in which I pasted Rasi's entire unit file. This also seemed to work, but still the incorrect state problem happened.
    At this point I didn't know what to try. It seemed like the only option left was to set up mpd using a local configuration and setting up a systemd/User session and managing it that way. The wiki indiciated that if I did it this way I would not have to use the method 2) above. However I was/still am hesistant about doing this. I'm new to arch and the systemd/User wiki page seems very intimidating. I worry that I will create problems that I won't understand how to solve using this method just for the chance that mpd will function correclty with pulse. However I seemed to have exhausted all my possible options so I thought whatever I'll try it anyway! I'm certain I probably haven't done it right however.
    So once again I turned to the wiki to help me with setting this up. However I can't make sense of the article. I don't know if I should follow ONLY the Setup since systemd 206 or if I should follow both setup sections? I decided to follow only the first section. I use no DE so I commented out the
    [[ -z $DISPLAY && $XDG_VTNR -eq 1 ]] && exec startx
    line in my ~/.zprofile. When I set up my system I followed the Automatic login to virtual console. I left this file alone, but upon second thoughts maybe I should have disabled this too? I don't understand if using xlogin-git to austoart Xorg, as described in the systemd/User page, requires me to get rid of this too. I think xlogin-git just starts Xorg so automatic login via getty should be fine?
    Immediately when I boot in using systemd to manage my session I notice that there are problems. I don't think my environment variables are being sourced from .zshenv because my panel fails to load. If I kill the panel and load it again it works. This makes me think there is something wrong with the order of units started with systemd.

    In each instance panel is trying to do things based on $PANEL_FIFO which is exported from ~/.zshenv but it doesn't appear to be set at the time systemd starts things up. Apart from these problems, which are probably undoubtedly due to the fact I failed to set up systemd/User properly, I still have problems with mpd. The state seems to be remembered correctly now, however when I reboot I still have to toggle mpc for it to start playback. It seems to be the same problem as when I use setup detailed intially. I suspect perhaps once again there is something wrong with the order here. MPD starts before pulse so it doesn't find anything to play through, then once I issue the mpc toggle command pulse is started and all is happy.
    A final note is that I was getting this error yesterday when using systemd/User

    I tried this because I was wondering if mpd was even using the correct service when using systemd/User. I thought perhaps it just was using the one in /etc/systemd/system/ instead of /usr/lib/systemd/user/. I'm still not sure about this.
    In the end I've exhausted whatever I can think of. I'm sure I've done a lot of things wrong but I tried my best. Hopefully somebody knows what I've done wrong and can help me.

    EDIT:A small update; it seems I don't need to have /etc/systemd/system/[email protected]/autologin.conf when using systemd to manag my user session as I removed it and I'm both automatically logged on and in X-session.

  • [SOLVED] Question about systemd-user-session

    I'm trying to setup a systemd --user session (using user-session-units and xorg-launch-helper from aur).
    I have a couple of questions; this is my .xinitrc now:

    1) is "if" statement required when using systemd-user-session? And if yes, how can I reproduce it?
    2) "conky -p 5 " will wait 5 seconds doing nothing. Will this mean that other .service will wait for it to finish? (i guess no, since they're executed in parallel).
    3) how can I export "chromium" as my default browser?

    I followed everything in that wiki, and in KaiSforza and sofar github page.
    I finally managed to get my old method (autologin to vt and autostart x) to work together with systemd --user: i put in .xinitrc "systemd --user" and deleted everything else.
    So, my .config/systemd/user/ works. The problem is in the [email protected], i guess. I configured it like wiki says, mind to post here your /etc/systemd/system/[email protected]?

  • [SOLVED]dbus and systemd: "systemctl --user" gets "Connection refused"

    Hi,
    I want to enable some systemd user service. Here is what I get

    I don't believe I've ever touched dbus, so I'm a bit lost. There's the following line in my ~/.xinitrc:

    New error = progress! yay!

  • [solved] migrating to systemd

    Hey All,
    I have hit two stumbling blocks migrating to systemd
    one is rc.local support
    rc.local simply contains
    echo 0 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
      which needs to be run as root once per startup to enable backlight adjustment
    I wrote the file /etc/systemd/system/rc-local.service
    [Unit]
    Description=/etc/rc.local Compatibility
    [Service]
    Type=oneshot
    ExecStart=/etc/rc.local
    TimeoutSec=0
    #StandardInput=tty
    #RemainAfterExit=yes
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    and executed it with
    # systemctl start rc-local.service
    and this works correctly
    running
    systemctl enable rc-local.service
    and restarting however still results in rc.local failing
    The second issue is that slim.service fails periodically (about 50% of the time) and I am not sure why, /var/lock exists
    Does anyone have any ideas as to why slim fails. Or a workaround for either removing rc.local completely or a fix for my rc-local.service
