Recycle bin and 'clear disk space'

a combination issue, in PC settings etc you have the option to manage disk space, mentions the recycle bin at the bottom, HOWEVER, it displays the bin as empty, while it actually has about 6GB in it over at least 1 of the 3 'drives' I have.
also, if you search for the reyclebin it'll always return nothing, the only access to it is via the desktop folder assuming you actually have one, 'This PC' (aka 'my computer' or 'computer') are still accessible via search so why not the bin?
both of these I find pretty stupid to the point I call them bugs, there been anything about this...?

Hi,
The storage occupied in recyle bin under PC settings is the same as the storage occurpied in the bin in desktop, that means if you empty the recyle bin in desktop, then the recycle bin at the bottom of PC settings will also display empty.
And regarding to this sentence
"if you search for the reyclebin it'll always return nothing, the only access to it is via the desktop folder assuming you actually have one, 'This PC' (aka 'my computer' or 'computer') are still accessible via search so why not the bin?"
I don't quite understand this sentence, but search result should be related with "Indexng Options" under Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Indexing Options

'same as the one on the desktop' well no, its not;
why would you think I'd say otherwise?
also, considering the indexing should already contain the desktop, that doesn't make sense either, and I definitely haven't turned off indexing anywhere.

G'day.  I am using iMovie 11 and need to clear disk space.  How can I do that using an external drive, leaving me the option to go back and make changes or access old events or projects from that external drive?

The slightly bigger question is whether you want to move all movie content to the external drive (essentially meaning that drive will always need to be attached when you're working with your videos), or whether you just want to archive older videos off to the external drive.
If you want to move all videos, then just move the 'Movies' folder in your home directory to the external drive, then create an alias of the external 'Movies' back in to your home directory. Now the 'Movies' icon in your home directory will point to the external drive and everything will just work (as long as the external drive is attached when you launch iMovie)
If you want to archive older movies then each Movie should have its own subdirectory within your Movies folder. These can easily be moved off to the external drive, and moved back should you ever need to work on those movies again.

  • Problem with Photoshop CS5. Memory and Hard disk space Mac OSX

Just got CS5 Master Suite.  Whenever I open photoshop it takes a ton of memory 1 gig +. When I open  files it takes up more and more until it takes up all my memory and hard  disk space. I open a simple multi layered file that is 25 megs in size  to work on it. Before I know it photoshop is taking 20gigs+ of my hard  disk space along with 3+ gigs of system memory. Is there a memory  problem in photoshop cs5?
    Thanks!
    Joseph
    UPDATE:
So I just opened the 25 meg file  in photoshop cs5 and watched my free space on my hard drive go down 8  gigs the instant I opened it. It went from 27 gigs of freespace to 19  instantly. As I open more files and close others it works till my harddrive goes to zero space... stalls the computer big time. Only way to correct it is to quit photoshop cs5 and wait a few minutes for the space to return... and it takes a few minutes for it all to return.
I am running a Macbook Pro with OSX 10.6., 4 gigs of ram on board.

  • I have OsX 10.6.8, and imac 2007-08, and enough disk space to download yosemite but still Apple tells something is wrong and generates a list of maybes but not a specific reason. Any ides as to how to pin point the problem of the upgrade?

Want to upgrade from 10.6.8 to yosemite  and I have a imac 2007, and enough disk space. but when trying to download, I get a "I can't" due to a list of possible issues, but how to isolate the problem?
    Thanks,

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

    Do a backup before installing.
If you can/do upgrade, I recommend you make a copy of the installer and move it out of your Applications folder. The installer self-destructs. The copy will keep you from having to download the installer again.  You can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program.

I deleted some apps on accident. I went to my recycling bin and saw them in there. I tried to restore them thinking that they would just reappear on itunes, but they didn't. Is there a way i can get them back or did i completely lose them?

Which idiot at apple decided this was intuitive?
I too have lost months of work, because when Notes started to mysteriously appear in Mail, I deleted them (That makes sense doesn't it? - Its not MAIL) Why would any one then setup the best OS in the world to delete the actual notes (from within Mail) in the application you created them in???? with no warning and no backup. Months of work, instantly destroyed. This is why i pay the Apple prices!!
If Jobs was still around, heads would roll.

  • "$RECYCLE.BIN" and "System Volume Information" on a hard drive connected to EA4500

    Hello
I've bought WD Elements 3 TB USB 2.0 External HD WDBAAU0030HBK hard drive for my Linksys EA4500. The hard drive was NTFS formatted. After I plugged it in I see "$RECYCLE.BIN" and "System Volume Information" folders on it via my Windows Explorer. I know these folders to be Windows system folders, but my hard drive is now connected to router. So do I really need them, or can I safely remove them?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The EA4500 does not have to anything with these folders popping-up since they appear on the computer by its design- system file and cannot be deleted permanently. I had read some notes on how to hide these files; you can try these if you want:
It works as a part of recycle bin in your desktop. To make this disappear, go to Tools > Folder Options > View and uncheck “Hide protected operating system files”. System Volume Information is where windows system restore files are located. If you do not want to use this folder then disable System Restore.
But just to be safe, leave it as is. This should not make any issues or problems in accessing the files from the HD using the computers connected to the EA4500.

  • Active Directory Recycle Bin and Infrastructure FSMO Role.

    Hello!
In the book about Active Directory I have found the information:
"Once the Active Directory Recycle Bin has been enabled, the infrastructure master’s functions are performed independently by every DC in the forest. That is, the tasks just described are no longer delegated to a single DC."
I have looked for additional information and found only one article from trusted source:  http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc223753.aspx :
"When the Recycle Bin optional feature is enabled, every DC is responsible for updating its cross-domain object references in the event that the referenced object is moved, renamed, or deleted. In this case, there are no tasks associated with the Infrastructure
FSMO role, and it is not important which domain controller owns the Infrastructure Master role."
Someone have any additional information about this changes?
How Infrastructure Master role works, after enabling AD Recycle bin?

From my understanding is that the Infrastructure Role ceases to do the updating when cross-domain objects are moved-renamed- deleted and now becomes the function of the domain controller that did the action. This makes the role of Infrastructure Master redundant
thus no longer a necessary role.
When you enable the Recycle Bin - that's a forest wide operation meaning that each domain must be at least a windows 2008 R2 domain level and the forest is a 2008 R2 level -

  • I cant download a new tv episode because itunes says the disk is full that it is being stored on....however when I deleted many shows from my library it still will not download.....I went to my desktop and tried to empty my recycle bin and the empty recyc

I cant download onto my computer an episode I purchased because when I hit download it says that the disk I am attempting to tranfer to is full.....however iy had no problem down loading another show....(Jon Stuart) So I went to my library where I see my shows stored and deleted MANY and when I tried again to download ---I got the same message to full......I tried to empty the recycle bin on my desktop thinking it was holding too much but the choice to empty is not darkened so it will not empty....can ANYONE help?

Therefore, t there any way to just completely delete all the old backup data out of my Time Capsule from my prior Mac Laptop?
Here is how to do this:
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Disks icon at the top of the AirPort Utility window
Click the Disks tab below the icons
    Click Erase
The "Quick Erase" option will only take a moment or two
Now you can backup your MacBook Pro. If you connect an Ethernet cable from the MBP to one of the LAN <-> ports on the TC, the first backup will go 3-5 times faster than wireless.
Once you have the first backup done, you can use wireless for subsequent backups since they will only take a few minutes

  • Insufficient disk space. Please try and clear up space

I'm trying to install CC apps from the cloud app, but it keeps telling me about insufficient disk space on "untitled". I don't have a drive by that name, and there is 25gb free on my main drive I am trying to install them on.
It's getting really frustrating as it has happened before with Adobe manager tools.

It's a macbook pro 15" from 2011 with 16gb ram and 250gb SSD. The issues is that I have 25gb free space which is more than enough to install Photoshop and Illustrator CC as I just had them as CS6, but when I try to install them from the CC tool, it says insufficient disk space. I had the same issues with the old adobe download manager and I had to install the cs6 from trial versions. Problem is that I can't get CC as a trial version to install with my full license.
I don't install all CC apps, and I know I have plenty of space to install the 900mb PS and AI takes.

  • Qosmio X500 Folder migration utility and low disk space drice C

This may be a longish post as I try to explain my problem... please forgive.
I've had my X500 for just over three months now.
It took a little while before the folder migration utility woke up I didn't know it was there after I'd done a limited copy of folders across from my old Qosmio F20. After it had woken up and I'd been able to transfer folders/files across it cleared a lot of room from the 'tiny' - I feel, 60 Gb SSD C drive.
I keep getting a message coming up sometimes, when I boot up, that the folder migration utility has a setting for me. If I open the utility it shows no folders in the 'C' drive area and folders already transfered [from first using it] in the right hand side for the 'D' drive. Text in the bottom of the utility says something like "if you have done some manual transfers then it can't do anything"... something along those lines - sorry for not being clear on that.
I've recently installed some other programs and have endeavoured each time to do a custom install to the D drive to program files [x86] folder. However, drive C is now showing low disk space at 5.58 of 59.2 Gb.
Checking the folders copies??? I thought for the programs I installed I find lots of folders/files in those program folders so taking up a lot of space.
What is the best way to free up space on drive 'C' please?
Should I manually copy the data contained in the folders [not just a 'name' ... ie; AVID... folder but possibly also in the drive C Program files [x86] folder] to the same named folders on drive D?
If I did, would the programs work properly or would there be problems in the program being located?
When the utility first activated [by itself] I thought "Great... transfer of all my old data to the X500 will be easy" but it doesn't seem to be the case. I was expecting that any new programs installed would be automatically copied to drive D. I'm getting somewhat paranoid about the low disk space on drive C.
    Help would be appreciated.

    Thanks for coming forward PauPau.
Firstly, when I got the x500 I had lots of documents etc., I wanted to transfer over so I used the Win7 Transfer program to make the back up/transfer images. In doing the transfer across [after the copies of] the X500 gave an error warning that the C: drive had insufficient space to do the full copies. At this time/stage I was not aware that the X500 had a folder migration utility. What ever made it 'wake up' and make itself known I have no idea but I used it when it did. My first problem was probably in using the Win7 file transfer - for getting files/folders across from the old computer to the x500!
I ended up doing a factory reset about three times before this utility made it self known. I found NOTHING in ant documentation about the X500 about this utility and how to make use of it when I bought the laptop. Not sure if you are aware of the make up of the X500 having 2 hard drives; a 'C:' drive of 65Gb SSD and a SATA 'D:' drive of 650GB. If you do then my apologies if that comes over in any 'bad' way. The D: drive is NOT a partition of 1 installed hard drive as your reply would seem to suggest you are thinking.
The migration folder utility, when used first time, copied/transfered folders across - even program folders such as Program files [x86] - and left 'similar' named folders on the C: drive. At that time I then thought that any future installs of programs would be put in the D: drive. Only when watching the first time for a new program install did I see it going to the C: Program and Program files [x86] folders instead of those in the D: drive. I then had to uninstall and do a custom install to direct to the D: drive. However... some data appears that it can NOT be directed from the install disk to the D: drive and still goes to the C: drive - HENCE the issue I am having with the small amount of remaining free space on the C: drive.
I accept what you say in reply to my question about the best way to free up space but, based on as explained above, should I have to do a re-install of any program I try to run after being moved to the same named corresponding folder on the separate D: drive [if that is what I have to do] I think the install disk will still do an automatic install of these to the C: drive as at that stage there seems no way of stopping it. Although given the option in a custom install to change the 'drive' to install to such as the D: some data is still going to C: and I'll be in the same predicament that I am now.
If that's the case then maybe this is something that TOSHIBA should be looking in to solving if they are going to produce laptops with two hard drives - - - even if one [the C: drive] is of the SSD make to speed thing up.
I DO appreciate your input. MAybe I didn't explain properly first time... and maybe I haven't this time - in which case I apologies.
Are there no other X500 users with the same issue?
Thanks. I may just have to give it a go and transfer these data files/folders manually to the D: and see what happens if no one here can guide as to stop any hair pulling frustrations if it goes wrong.

  • HT201612 clearing disk space in mac drive in windows partition

I am using MacBook Air and having both the operating system installed (Windows and linux).
My windows partition "BOOTCAMP" is having 79 GB (30 GB is still free) and Macintosh HD is of 32 GB (only 19.6 MB is free).
I am not able to login to Linux operating system because of low disk space.
I am able to login to Windows OS. I want to clear some dispace in Macintosh HD.
I would request for some help in this regard.

It is not clear how many operating systems you have, two or three. If you have a Bootcamp partition for Windows you can not have three partitions because Bootcamp won't work with more than two partitions. If you want to remove the Bootcamp partition to free up hard drive space you must use Bootcamp Assistant to remove the Bootcamp partition and return your hard drive to a single OSx partition.
So try to better explain what you have and what you want to do.

  • It all started with 'clearing disk space'.

    Hey guys,
So i'm having this grey blank screen problem.
    1) It started off while i was trying save some documents, didn't work so I went to Disk Utility, cleared the free space and then it was fine.
    2) I then tried to surf the web on safari. Some sites couldn't load and some sites did and all of a sudden, my mac just hanged.
I tried to restart/shut down my mac through Finder and it just didn't restart/shutdown so I used the power button instead.
Lo and behold, it took so long to boot and when it did it came to a blank screen.
I did everything I could find on this support page.
    1) Ran it in safe nothing happened
    2) Ran it in recovery, nothing came out
    3) Then it came to a grey screen when I tried rebooting it so i did the PRAM thing and that brought my mac back up.
So to check on it I did an 'EtreCheck' and here it is, seems to be... okay?

  • Recycle Bin and Core Dump

    Hi Friends,
Why do we use core dump I mean "core_dump_dest" till now I didn't see any files in this particular destination.
My 2nd Question is where is the Recycle Bin created and can we adjust the size of the recycle bin according to our requirement.
    Say,
    SQL>> drop table stock;
I can get back the table from the recyclebin using flashback option. I heard recyclebin stores in the same datafile pertaining to the table dropped.
    Update me regarding this.
    Cheers,
    Sailesh

    Hi,
    >>Why do we use core dump I mean "core_dump_dest" till now I didn't see any files in this particular destination
"A core dump is a memory image of the Oracle shadow process produced when an unexpected , unrecoverable or invalid condition occurs." It seems it was primarily used on Unix platforms and I think they are normally produced when the session or the instance terminates abnormally with errors.
    >>My 2nd Question is where is the Recycle Bin created and can we adjust the size of the recycle bin according to our requirement.
In fact, the recycle bin is a logical structure within each tablespace that holds dropped tables and objects related to the tables, such as indexes. By the way, there is no such initialization parameter that can limit the "size" of the recyclebin. In addition, according to documentation, the objects in the recycle bin are dropped to satisfy space requests before any of the tablespace’s datafiles are autoextended.
    Cheers

  • Prime Infrastructure 1.4: Clear Disk Space

In order to reduce disk space usage on Prime Infrastructure I will reduce the System Data Retention period (for aggregate data) and "Background Data Collection Task" raw data  retention (for non-aggregate data).   If I now run  'ncs stop / ncs cleanup / ncs start, will this inmediately clear the disk space or does some other event clear the disk space?
    Thanks.

ncs cleanup should be able to retrieve some disk space.
You can check the details of how it works from this document here.
