Redefining Keys

I would think this would be called "redefining keys," but in my week of owning an iMac, I've learned that often the terms I want to use are not standard Mac terms. I come to Mac from a Linux background and I'm used to certain keys doing certain things. For example, if I'm in a text field in a browser or any other program, "Home" goes to the start of the field, "End" goes to the end of it. The same buttons take me to the start or end of a line of text when I'm in a text box or text editor.
I checked the Keyboard and Mouse settings in the Preferences, but the keys I'm talking about aren't listed.
Is there some relatively easy way to redefine the home, end, and arrow keys for cursor movement so I can make my computer act like what I'm used to?
Are there specific terms I should use when looking for information on this? Is it redefining keys or would it be referred to as something else?

Change TextEdit's preference to save it as text. I'm surprised they didn't make this easier to do in Leopard because it's been a feature of the "save as" in just about every word processor and text editing program I have used on a Mac for 20 years, including most of Apple's!

[DoubleCommand|http://doublecommand.sourceforge.net> is software for Mac OS X (a kernel extension) that lets you remap keys. Has a preset variety of key modifier remappings, specifically for adapting PC keyboards to Mac users.
I haven't done binding on Leopard so I don't know if they changed things. In addition, some programs seem to just override the mapping regardless of what you do.

Defining keys for the web

Can anyone please let me know if it is possible to redefine keys for web forms. I can do this for the client/server version of the application but no for the web application.
I have tried editing the FMRWEB.res file but cannot access it using Oracle Terminal.
Any suggestions/assistance would be appreciated.

You can directly open the FMRWEB.RES file in your editor (Notepad or Wordpad) and then change the keys according to the example shown in this file. You need not use Oracle Terminal.

CS5 keyboard selection shortcuts?

I'm quite used to holding down Command (Mac) to temporarily get the selection tool.
(I guess this is called a "spring loaded tool shortcut").
It appears that this no longer works consistently in CS5. For instance, with the gap tool selected, nothing happens.
What's up with this?
Is it because the gap tool is also a "selection tool"? I guess I could hold down 'V' or 'A' and use the plain ol' springloaded key functionality, but somehow I really liked the ability to retain this keyboard shortcut I learned using Adobe Illustrator '88 that has stuck with me since then...
Any idea what the thinking is? Or is this a bug?

Jongware, why the heck do you want to redefine the Command key shortcut?
While there's a lot to be said for the ability to redefine keys, it does have some downsides. It's really nice to have standard keys that do standard things across all products, and to have the careful attention of UI designers coming up with consistent shortcuts that work well together and work across product lines. One would like to hope peoplek have done this.
I suppose I get grumpy when people want to redefine existing key shortcuts. I'm the first to support being able to define shortcuts for new commands or for commands that don't have them, but I'm always very wary when people want to give new shortcuts to existing commands.
Presumably it's clear why you can't redefine the Command/Ctrl springloaded selection behavior -- it's a special case that is handled outside of the OS's standard keyboard handling, and that special case isn't dispatched through the standard ID keyboard shortcut mechanism. But it's also a really really powerful keybinding. Like asking an emacs user to rebind Meta, or a windows user to swap Ctrl and the number '2' -- rampant confusion if anyone else sits down at the keyboard...
Anyhow, we won't be using CS5 in production for a loooong time [Woodwing, what is up with you guys???], so I suppose I don't have to worry much, but I feel like my mindshare with Adobe is weakening.
Pretty stunning to see that bit in the indesignsecrets comments about defining a new key command for Zoom. I mean, as if Cmd-0, Cmd-1, Cmd-2, and Cmd-5 weren't enough, as is Z, holding down option while the grabber hand is active, the Zoom Level box, and hte power zoom: Cmd-space (and Cmd-option-space) are incredibly useful [though it does drive me up the wall when Spotlight steals them under OSX. It would be nice if Adobe could disable spotlight's use of them only while you're in Adobe products so you don't have to reconfigure somebody else's machine just to use it].
Plus the hand tool, with Option-Space, is great too.
While ranting, how come so few people make use of marquee zoom (dragging a marquee -- a box -- around the area you want magnified while the zoom tool is selected)? I see people so often struggle to zoom to the right area and that command is right there and perfect for them... Cognitive dissonance, I suppose...
All this makes me nostalgic for Illustrator '88 on a Mac SE. Maybe I should go try to find one (not sure which is harder, the Mac SE or Illustrator '88) and see how slow it is and whether it's as awesome as I remember...

Keyboard locale Changes ?

Every so often, my keyboard changes from uk to us settings, any reason why that might happen ?
I have this setting in my xorg.conf file and rc.conf

PD: Al tools links are for Windows 8-8.1 don't know if works on Win7, the KLM tool doesn't appear on your model support page, on my model support page also doesn't appear but if i go to MSI spanish page they have the tool on the support page (at least on GE60)
keep in mind SSE only works on models with steelseries keyboard so if your model dont have it then KLM is only choice for your model Once again SSE will not work on laptops that are with non steelseries keyboard.

Redefining Shortcut Key Commands??

How would i go about redefining the R key (currently set to record) to Zoom In?
I am so used to the ProTools shortcut keys, I rebound them in Logic Pro 7.2, but they seem grayed out in the "Logic Pro > Preferences > Key Commands" Menu
I can't figure it out, and I've looked in the manuals, Its gotta be something simple?

Possible to redefine function keys via Ansi ESC sequences in terminal?

If it is possible, I would be be very grateful if somebody could be so kind as to show me a couple of examples.
BACKGROUND:
I want to reconfigure my function keys in terminal,via ansi-escape-sequencenses from
a script, before invoking the "screen" utility, to make it less cumbersome to use.
It's really nifty, if you want to see som manpages, without ending up with a zillion of terminalwinwindows, and you can name the windows too, so you can easily see the difference between
terminfo and bash for instance, - but the keypresses for invoking screen is quite cumbersome.
I will try do it by ansi-sequences, but I haven't managed to do that yet.
I want to store other keypresses, like [^A"] on functionkey F2 for instance.
I have no intention to restore the keys, as i just close the window when I'm finished using screen.
I have configured my function keys in terminal, and I think that writing new values for them in the defaults database, and be able to use the new configuration from within terminal is a little to much to expect.
If anybody has a solution not including ansi sequences, I'm open for that as well.

That wasn't what I had in mind, but thats what I'll go for, as I can't seem to figure out how to send and ansi escape sequence that does it, and creating a new terminfo file with the new settings, exporting it, and and creating a new subshell is just too much work. "Screen" runs fine now, with some function-key bindings.

How to redefine the width of key figure through ABAP CLASS

     I encounter a problem when using table interface.
     I make a wad with two table(two query).The two queries have same characteristics, but different key figures in row.Now i want to adjust the format to make all the cell aligh. I have realize that when i keep the column header of the tables. But if i hide the second column header of table, it's failed. I don't know where i can adjust the width of the key figure cell without column header.
For example: query1: zmodel qty01
                                      aaa       100
                      query2: zmodel qty02
                                      bbb        200
how to make the width of qty01 the same as qty02

While populating the value in the cell use the following command.
c_cell_td_extend = 'style = "width:200px"'.

Redefining F keys

I love the F keys except for F7-F9 which are currently rewind, pause, forward. I NEVER use these keys. All the other function keys I use. I want to keep all the other keys the same but make these three keys expose, dashboard, spaces. I have tried changing everything in the keyboard setting but this is what I end up with.
Either (a) f7-f9 do what I want to, but no other keys work (unless I use fn+F# key -- which I don't want to do b/c it's a pain in the a$%)
OR
(b) Everything is the standard setting.
I have been to system pref. and checked "F1, F2 return to standard blah blah blah" and I've played around with the keyboard shortcuts -- even attempting to make some new ones. To no avail.
Please help.

I believe you would need a 3rd-party tool, and one that messes with OS X at a low level. I don't personally like installing things like that, because of the risks of crashes or incompatibility with future Apple software releases. You could google for OS X keyboard remapping.

How to redefine default keys?

Currently I use FORMS 6i and wish to define
SCROLLUP and SCROLLDOWN events to PAGEUP and PAGEDOWN keys. How to make it?

How to redefine the "AltGr"-Key in Beehive Conferencing

Hi @all,
I have a weird problem with beehive Conferencing. If I'm the presentator and want to type for example an "@"-sign (or "{","[","]","}","~","|"), I have to press the "AltGr" (or "Ctrl+Alt") on my german keyboard to get this.
But if I do that the only thing that comes up is a popup which reads "present this window". So, "AltGr" acts as a hotkey in Beehive Conferencing.
And I have found no possibility to change this hotkey.
Has anyone an idea how I can change this hotkey-setting?

Yes, really interesting. To work around this I've created a textfile with all the characters I can't reach while presenting (and do a copy+paste if I need one).
Always leads to a lot of laughter by the attendees. But if it helps to make the presentation a bit more interesting.....

The 'e' key stops working at seeming random times.

Several times now I've come to the computer to wake it up, and can't login to my account apparently because the 'e' key is not recognized when I try to type in the password. It does not seem to be a keyboard issue, because when I plug in a different one, it still has the same issue. When this happens, I have to turn off the compter by holding down the power button on the back. Of course this means I've lost anything that wasn't saved. After the computer boots up, it appears to work fine afterwards. Intervals between this problem have gone from once every couple weeks, to once every couple of days. It appears to be only the 'e' that is affected.
Any ideas?

The problem seems to be related to an alternate keyboard layout I sometimes use for writing in Esperanto. It appears that if the computer goes to sleep when this layout is active, the password requester won't recognize either the 'e' or the 'a' keys. This is rather strange, since this layout doesn't redefine either of these keys.
The work-around is that I've changed my password so that it doesn't use either of these keys. One I'm properly logged in, the keyboard works normally.
The particular layout I use is an old one, with the last update on the readme file dated 2004. I haven't been able to find a newer version of this layout, and other Esperanto layouts I've found remap the keyboard differently from this one. It'd be like learning to type all over again. I don't want to do that if I can avoid it.
I appreciate the help and advice. I knew that just turning off the power was a bad idea, but I didn't know what else to do, if I was unable to log in in the first place.

Editable ALV & Foreign Key Check

I am working on an Editable ALV. Here if I try to enter some value into a field which doesnt exist in the corresponding Check table of the field, ALV throws me an error. This scenario is working fine.
But in some scenarios I populate the ALV table from a Z table (Z table has the same strucutre as the ALV table) and then show this to the user as an editable ALV but in this scenarios if some erroneous values exist in my Z table for a particular fieId I am not getting the Foreign Key check I mentioned earlier. Here I was hoping to get error message after SET_TABLE_FOR_FIRST_DISPLAY !
I am using CL_GUI_ALV_GRID, has anyone found a workaround for this

Hi Antony,
you can INHERIT a class from CL_GUI_ALV_GRID and then redefine SET_TABLE_FOR_FIRST_DISPLAY adding the raising EVENT data_changed for all cells.
