I want to learn and understand about c and data structures and i am very new to it, can someone refer me to some good reference websites or books or articles from which i can undestand the object oriented concepts better and c along with it.Please also let me know how i can practice by downloading the c compiler on my pc installed with windows 8.

This forum is about C, C++, and Fortran programming in general, and about using the Oracle Solaris Studio suite of program development tools on Solaris and Linux in particular. This is not a good place to ask about Windows.

(The latter group filters out spam and conversations are more polite.) If you are interested in object-oriented programming, C is not the best programming language for it. C has no direct support for object-oriented constructs. A better choice is C++, which is approximately a superset of C. C++ directly supports a variety of programming methods, including object-oriented programming.

I'd like to see NI actually start a round-table discussion about VI references, Data Value references, local variables, compiler optimizations, etc. I'm a C programmer; I'm used to pointers. They are simple, functional, and well defined. If you know the data type of an object and have a pointer to it, you have the object. I am used to compilers that optimize without the user having to go to weird lengths to arrange it.
The 'reference' you get when you right click and "Create Reference" on a control or indicator seems to be merely a shorthand read/write version of the Value property that can't be wired into a flow-of-control (like the error wire) and so causes synchronization issues and race conditions. I try not to use local variables.
I use references a lot like C pointers; I pass items to SubVIs using references. But the use of references (as compared to C pointers) is really limited, and the implementation is insconsistent, not factorial in capabilites, and buggy. For instance, why can you pass an array by reference and NOT be able to determine the size of the array EXCEPT by dereferencing it and using the "Size Array" VI? I can even get references for all array elements; but I don't know how many there are...! Since arrays are represented internally in Labview as handles, and consist of basically a C-style pointer to the data, and array sizing information, why is the array handle opaque? Why doesn't the reference include operators to look at the referenced handle without instantiating a copy of the array? Why isn't there a "Size Array From Reference" VI in the library that doesn't instantiate a copy of the array locally, but just looks at the array handle?
Data Value references seem to have been invented solely for the "In-Place Element Structure". Having to write the code to obtain the Data Value Reference before using the In-Place Element Structure simply points out how different a Labview reference is from a C pointer. The Labview help page for Data Value References simply says "Creates a reference to data that you can use to transfer and access the data in a serialized way.". I've had programmers ask me if this means that the data must be accessed sequentially (serially)...!!! What exactly does that mean? For those of use who can read between the lines, it means that Labview obtains a semaphore protecting the data references so that only one thread can modify it at a time. Is that the only reason for Data Value References? To provide something that implements the semaphore???
The In-Place Element Structure talks about minimizing copying of data and compiler optimization. Those kind of optimizations are built in to the compiler in virtually every other language... with no special 'construct' needing to be placed around the code to identify that it can be performed without a local copy. Are you telling me that the Labview compiler is so stupid that it can't identify certain code threads as needing to be single-threaded when optimizing? That the USER has to wrap the code in semaphores before the compiler can figure out it should optimize??? That the compiler cannot implement single threading of parts of the user's code to improve execution efficiency?
Instead of depending on the user base to send in suggestions one-at-a-time it would be nice if NI would actually host discussions aimed at coming up with a coherent and comprehensive way to handle pointers/references/optimization etc. One of the reasons Labview is so scattered is because individual ideas are evaluated and included without any group discussion about the total environment. How about a MODERATED group, available by invitation only (based on NI interactions with users in person, via support, and on the web) to try and get discussions about Labview evolution going?
Based solely on the number of Labview bugs I've encountered and reported, I'd guess this has never been done, with the user community, or within NI itself.....

The second article is a little out-of-date, as it doesn't discuss some of the newer technologies available such as the In-Place Element Structure you were referring to. However, many of the general concepts still apply. Some general notes from your post:
1. I think part of your confusion is that you are trying to use control references and local variables like you would use variables in a C program. This is not a good analogy. Control references are references to user interface controls, and should almost always be used to control the behavior and appearance of those controls, not to store or transmit data like a pointer. LabVIEW is a dataflow language. Data is intended to be stored or transmitted through wires in most cases, not in references. It is admittedly difficult to make this transition for some text-based programmers. Programming efficiently in LabVIEW sometimes requires a different mindset.
2. The LabVIEW compiler, while by no means perfect, is a complicated, feature-rich set of machinery that includes a large and growing set of optimizations. Many of these are described in the first link I posted. This includes optimizations you'd find in many programming environments, such as dead code elimination, inlining, and constant folding. One optimization in particular is called inplaceness, which is where LabVIEW determines when buffers can be reused. Contrary to your statement, the In-Place Element Structure is not always required for this optimization to take place. There are many circumstances (dating back years before the IPE structure) where LabVIEW can determine inplaceness and reuse buffers. The IPE structure simply helps users enforce inplaceness in some situations where it's not clear enough on the diagram for the LabVIEW compiler to make that determination.
The more you learn about programming in LabVIEW, the more you realize that inplaceness itself is the closest analogy to pointers in C, not control references or data references or other such things. Those features have their place, but core, fundamental LabVIEW programming does not require them.

Production Order without Material Number and linked to a PM Order...

Hi All,
Is it possible to create a Production Order without Material Number (because it is a "just one time" production), and link it to a PM Order (enterred by a sister Plant) in order to finally report the cost to that PM Order?
And if YES, how to do it???
Explanation of the problem (business scenario):
We have 2 Plants. Let say Plant "A" and Plant "B".
Plant B is producing spare parts for Plant A.
There are usual spare parts, which have a Material Number.
But there are also spare parts which will be produced only once, and which don't have a Material Number. (= because it is a very punctual production).
Plant A needs a punctual spare part.
It creates a PM Order for Plant B.
Plant B needs to create a Production Order for that spare part (without Material Number).
Then, when confirmed and delivered, the cost of that production needs to be reported (assigned) to the PM Order.

Upload file and link to sales order in SAP via rfc (C#)

Hello all,
In my company we have the possibility to attach files to sales orders, e.g. pdf files with the printing details.
These files are added by the GUI user, this works fine.
Now we have an extra order creation stream in which a pdf file has to be added to the SO without user interaction.
In a previous question I had a little question about the linking, that has been solved, I will post the test program later.
I now can link front end files (pdf's in this case) to the sales orders and it works fine.
Now we are developing a frontend in C# (build by a third party) which creates a sales order via a RFC. We also want that RFC to include the PDF file and link it to the created order.
In the interface of the RFC I included a table with 255 char lines. That is the same as in the example program. the problem is that our partner is yet unable to fill the interface in exact the same way as the example program does, so the linked pdf file is corrupted.
Does anyone have hints how C# should fill the interface table, or how I can change the interface?

Acrobat X, Word 2011, and Links in Table of Contents

I have a 300+ page document in Word 2011, with a Table of Contents that has been automatically generated by Word, based off headings.
When I "print" the document using "Save as Adobe PDF" from the Print dialouge, the PDF comes up, but the links in the ToC no longer work.
I've looked online for a solution, but I am noticing two things:
1) The option to turn the ToC links into Hyperlinks is not present on the Mac version of Word (2011).
2) I opened the file in Word 2010 on a PC, and enabled the above feature, and then brought it back to my Mac and Word 2011 - the links now seem active in Word. However, when I convert it to PDF, the links still do not work in the PDF.
Is there an automated way to make the links convert, or to add them to the PDF? With 300+ pages, a Table of Contents with working links is almost essential for navigation.

That's a defect (bug) in Adobe(Mac) that has been going on for 15 years and Adobe refuse to admit it and fix it. In Reference to Links.
The only work around is to use iWork's Pages.
The links should be active. Then Create the PDF from there The links should be live.
I've heard you can do the same thing with Preview, But haven't tried. I know Pages will.
Its no wonder that Apple won't allow Flash on the iPad. Besides not fixing Flash issues on the Mac paltform, They have a history of refusing to fix problems with Acrobat on The Mac Platform.

TCS2 - Cross References between linked Frame files not working

Hi,
All the cross-references in my linked in FrameMaker 9 files work when output in PDF, however, when outputting WebHelp from RoboHelp 8, FrameMaker cross references that reference another FrameMaker file (i.e. not Current) do not work. The format is correct, they appear blue and underlined like every other link/cross-reference, but when moused over in the browser, there's no link to click. The HTML created by RoboHelp does not point to a file. For example, here's the HTML for one link not working as shown from within RoboHelp:

RoboHelp appears to partially convert the link as appears in the HTML but I think there should be more information in the <a> definition, such as in the HTML created for a link that references a topic created from the same FrameMaker file.

I've ensured all the cross-references in each framemaker file in the book have the same format and are mapped to <$paratext> in the project settings. I've also tried importing the FrameMaker book instead of linking it and the same problem persists.

Most of the major cross reference issues have been resolved in TCS 2 with further improvements in TCS 3.
Please ensure that you have all the patches of TCS 2 installed on your system.
If the issue is still there, there could be an altogether different reason for cross reference not working or the issue might have been fixed in TCS 3.
The reason or workaround can be analysed once the sample files with the issues are provided.
It will be great if you could share a small sample FM document containing the cross reference and target having the issue. If the cross reference is across documents, then a FrameMaker book along with its FM files can be shared in a zip format.

Question about Resetting Widgets and Linking

Hi everyone!
This is actually my first day on this forum so please forgive me that I haven't participated in discussions. But I have a few questions and any insight into these would be extremely helpful!
My first question is: Is there a way to reset the entire iBook to its original state, where no answers are marked in to quiz questions and other used widgets are reset to their original views? Or would the entire book just need to be deleted and redownloaded again? The reason why I wanted to know is because our particular project would be used in a classroom setting and multiple children might use the same book and participate in the same widget activities. Being able to reset the activities to their default would allow the new user to not already see the previous user's responses.
My second question is: Has anyone found a work-a-round to getting the links to work better? For example, creating a references page, and having items in the iBook link to the references page, and having the references page link back to the original page? I found a way to create a references page, and get the pages to link back and forth to each other but only if I placed a gallery or interactive activity on both pages. Is there a way to link one page to another without an interactivity?

1.) There is a [Clear Answer] button at the bottom of each review widget. Design and execute a process between sessions to use it, or delete that book and push a new one.
2.) This gets asked a lot
The answer is always the same. There is no reverse path outside of creating another pair of interactive bookmark/hyperlinks to create one. A→B & B→A

Compiling and linking C library in C++

I am using a C library (Solstice FTAM v9.0) in my C++ program. One of the library header files has a declrartion
short class;
in one of the structures.
The C++ compiler (Sun C++ 5.4 on Solaris 8) gives error. What we should do to compile and link this library in C++.

You can use pointer to this structure without including the header that contains its definition, if it is possible, of course.
Also, it should be possible to #define class to smth else just before including this header and then #undef'ing it. If this C library comes in binary form, it shouldn't cause any problems since memory layout won't be affected; if it comes in source code form, you can always compile it with -Dclass=smth_else on the command line and reference this foul structure field from your C++ code accordingly.

Link 1 and Link 2 in Collaboration Launch Pad

I'm trying to configure Link 1 and Link 2 options in the CLP. These two links appear activating the EnableLink1 / 2 in Tool Area properties.
So far I haven't find a way to set the properties for the links.
Is there any documentation about this?

You want instances that are at the customer site right (last transaction is shipping) or all the instances that have been shipped before no matter what the current status is. Instance could have been returned and shipped again and so on or just returned and disposed.The second question will yield more instances compared to the first one.

Runtime error after successful compile and link with cl.exe

Finally, got the configuration for cl.exe and link.exe right and got a successful compile and link to produce a dll. Then ran the main method of my Java class. The main method calls the constructor, and loading the class runs the static block which loads the native dll. I get one of those error files of the type hs_err_pid4064.log. The file is as follows:

The dll I'm wrapping is C++ VC++ compiled.
Would like to know what I do to trouble-shoot this error and hope to fix it?

Using Java print statement was able to show that the my JNI dll was being loaded and that the problem was in the first call to one of my JNI functions. Then by using "DebugBreak()" in that function and gradually moving it down line by line through the function was able to isolate the line causing the problem. Unfortunately it is the line where I call a function from the dll I'm wrapping. See newer thread.

Local references and EJBs in separate jars

I have trouble in getting local references when the EJBs are built in separate jar files. I am using the <ejb-link> in the <local-ejb-ref>. But I could not get reference to the EJB's local reference.
Please let me know if there is any documentation that tells about getting local references and having the EJBs in separate jar files.

In any case, the fact that your beans are in separate jars is not, by itself, the issue. It is worth noting, however, that Local references may only be used when both components (referencer and referencee) are co-located within the same VM instance and perhaps this little fact may shed some light on your problem??
<ejb-link> in the <local-ejb-ref>. But I could not get<ejb-link> should point to the actual JNDI binding name, sans root nomenclature (java:comp/env/), but with full sub-context (ejb/myapp/.../MyLocalBean), of the referenced bean.

the EJBs in separate jar files.Both the J2EE tutorial and the EJB 2.0 spec. have the relevant information. :) However, I've already listed the requirements above: supplied local interfaces, co-located components, and correct link reference.

@see and @link issues with generics

Is there any documentation on how to write @see and @link tags that refer to generic classes or methods?
Here's an example:

 public void doSomething(T param);
}Now, when I write an implementation of this interface, e.g.:

Has anybody tested the import and linking enhancements in RH 9 HTML?

I am testing a trial version of RH 9. All looks good except I’m not understanding some of the import and linking enhancements. Has anyone tried the new relative path benefit by moving a project or source document? I’ve done both and I get the same results as in RH 8—if the project moves, the links work fine, and when the source document moves, you have to use the “restore to link” feature in order to update the link document. Am I missing something?
Here’s the “what’s new in RH 9” lingo:
RoboHelp 9 saves the relative path, instead of the absolute path, of linked documents. As a result, the links work even when the RoboHelp project and the linked Microsoft Word or FrameMaker documents are moved.
Note: Earlier versions of RoboHelp projects that contain absolute paths of linked documents open normally in RoboHelp 9. While saving these projects, RoboHelp 9 saves the relative path

Looking again at your first post in the thread, it does state on saving RoboHelp 9 changes the path to being relative. If Linking by Copy then it is an enhancement as it avoids the link having to be recreated if you move the project.
For Create by Reference I would say an absolute path is preferable as it then doesn't matter if the project moves and you are saying that does work. If it is the document that moves, somehow RoboHelp has to be told where.
Sounds like what is wrong is the help not qualifying when the relative link is used. You could add a comment to the help to get that fixed.

Automating Cropping and Link Creation

Hi guys,
Every morning, I create a PDF from an Excel spreasheet. I crop each page a certain amount - every day it's the same measuerements for the same pages.
After cropping the pages, I scroll up to my contents page. I then highlight each entry in the contents page, and choose to create a link, scroll to the page referenced, and then hit Create Link.
As you can imagine, this very monotonous, and I was hoping someone could tell me how to automate the 2 process mentioned above?
The amount by which each page is cropped does not change from day to day. As well as this, the contents page does not grow, and the poisiton of objects within the document does not change either, so I'm always setting the same content references to link to the same position within the document.

Crop is pretty straight forward using a Batch Sequence - there is already a Crop function listed there which you can use to define the page size and crop multiple PDF at once.
The hyperlinking is much more complicated and requires some rather complicated logic. Basically this too could be done with a custom Batch Sequence and a JavaScript. The process would iterate over the text of the page and based on regular expression pattern matching identify numbers representing page numbers. These numbers would also have to match other criteria such as page location i.e. page coordinates. Once the page text has been filtered this way creating bookmarks or hypertext automatically would be possible using standard JavaScript methods.
