Referencing single cells in formulas

Hello there.
Let us assume the following expression:
=$D$4
What I am doing:
1. Select a cell and tap twice to show the keyboard.
2. Tap =
3. Tap cell D4. The input panel shows D4 with an arrow.
4. Tap the arrow and select Start: preserve row and preserve column. Leave End untouched.
5. The reference becomes =$D$4:D4 when I want just =$D$4
Please, what is wrong?
Numbers Brazilian Portuguese version.
Best regards,
Otávio

Hi Otávio
If you want to keep your D4 cell, as a permanent cell, you will have to turn on "Preserve Row" and "Preserve Column" in both Start and End. Then it will give you $D$4.
If you do only turn it on in start, i suppose, that it wont change that number, if you copy the formula to a lower row or column. So just tick on all options
Best regards
Ole

  • Help needed with referencing single Excel cells and formatting resulting text

In InDesign CS5 I am putting together a 20pp catalogue of about 200 products. The plan is to have the product information, SKU code, quantity etc fixed, but have the prices (there are two i.e. pack price and individual price) being linked to an Excel spreadsheet. This is so that the prices can be updated in the Excel file and the InDesign file will pull the new prices through. In case you are wondering why I don't pull the whole set of information through, this is because there are a lot of copywriting changes done to the information once it's in InDesign - it's only going to be the prices that will be updated.
I am planning on having two single cell tables in their own text frame, duly formatted with cell style, table style and paragraph style for the two price variables. This I am then going to have to repeat 200 times making sure I link to the next row down in Excel. This is going to be a hideous task but I see know way of modifying the cell in InDesign to point it to the next row in Excel. That's my first problem.
My second problem is this. In the Excel sheet, the prices are formatted as UK currency and are therefore like this...
    £2.00
    £0.40
    £1.43
    £9.99
    £0.99
    £0.09
What I will require is once I import that data (and refresh the data via a newly saved Excel file) is that the prices end up like this...
    £2.00
    40p
    £1.43
    £9.99
    99p
    9p
So if the value is lower than £1.00 it needs a trailing 'p' added  and the leading zero and '£' sign stripped off. If the value is lower than £0.10 it also needs the zero after the decimal point stripping off.
Then formatting wise, the '£' sign needs to be superscripted and the same for the 'p'. This I am assuming could be done via GREP?
In summary, can anyone help with the first task of referecing the Excel cells on a cell by cell basis, given that it is the same cell column each time, but the next row down, and also point me in the right direction of the price formattting issues.
Any help will be gratefully received.

    I would do this:
Create on line with the formatting.
Export as InDesign tagged text (TXT)
    Read out these tags
In Excel exists a function to connect text from several cells and predfined text, there connect the content from cells with the paragraph styling tags. Do it in a seperate sheet. (Better would be to use a database like Access, there you can link your Excel sheet).
Export this sheet as txt file
Place this sheet as tagged text (there is an option in one of the sialog boxes).
In preferences  < file handling you can specify that Tablecalculation Sheets and text is not embedded but linked, turn it on.

I see people from different ages at my work and every month I need to count how many people from each age I've seen that month. How can I do to give the entries to numbers in a single cell and make numbers count them for me? The final result would be a spreadsheet telling there were 8 people from 20 to 39 years old, 14 peolple from 40 to 59 and so on...

This appears to be an 'input form' using 'Radio Buttons' to select the category. Neither of these features are supported in Numbers '09.
You can input the data on one table and summarize it on a second table, but the input table will continue to hold data for each event.
And by using the Reorganize button, you can hide all but two rows of that table to approximate the appearance and performance of an input form.
Here are the two tables, Data on the left and Summary on the right. Notes below.
The grey-filled columns in both tables are 'working' columns, and may be hidden (as shown in the image below).
    Data table:
D1 contains the word "TRUE" (in capital letters). (This row is always shown.)
D2 is empty, or may contain any value except "TRUE" (This row is always hidden under the Reorganize rule.)The rest of Row 2 of this table requires the data shown: a number outside the range to be counted (999), and two checkboxes, both checked.
D3 (and filled down the rest of column D):   =AND(OR(B2,C2),NOT(OR(B3,C3)))
The formula returns TRUE only for the first unused row in the table (ie. the first row for which neither checkbox has been checked)
    Summary table:
Column A contains labels for the age ranges to be counted.
Column B contains the same information in the form necessary for the formulas in columns C and D. They need a numeric value, and that value must be the largest acceptable value in the range to be counted.
C2 (and filled right to column D, then both filled down to row 5):
        =COUNTIFS(Data :: $A,"<="&$B,Data :: B,TRUE)-SUM(C$1:C1)
Two changes from the previous example:
COUNTIFS is used to separate the Native and Foreign counts as well as the age range to be counted.
The amount subtracted from each result is the SUM of the earlier results, and includes the text value in the first cell of the column (which is interpreted by SUM as a zero).
See note below regarding my earlier formula.
When the greyed columns are hidden and the checkbox in the Reorganize pane is checked, the two tables will appear as shown below:
Close the reorganize pane, and the 'data entry form' is ready to use.
To use, enter the age first, then check one of the boxes.
As soon as one box is checked, the row will be hidden, and the next (unused) row will be shown.
    Regards,
    Barry
Note regarding formula in my earlier post:
The earlier formula will give erroneous results as it subtracts only the count directly above it from its count of persons in the age range 0-n.
In E2 of that table, replace "-E1" with "-SUM(E1:E$1)
    Fill down to E8.
Ignore the instructions (in that post) following "Fill down to E8."

  • Show top n sum of a dimension in a single cell

    Hi experts,
is it possible to show the sum of top n values in a single cell?
    example:
    Table shows (top 3)
    USA___________180
    Germany_______150
    Italy___________100
    Sum___________430
    single cell should show
    430

    Create a variable "rank" as
    =Rank([Measure])
Then, in the standalone cell, enter the formula:
    =Sum([Measure] Where ([rank] < 4))

  • How to find multiple keys in single cell using Numbers?

I'm trying to add functionality to one of my Numbers tables where want to check a single cell for multiple keywords from a list. The hole thing works perfectly fine in Excel but it behaves differently in Numbers.
The formula I am using is:
    =IF(ISERROR(LOOKUP(2^15;FIND($E$2:$E$11;A2)));"not found";"found")
The following screenshots show that it correctly finds the keys in the cell when using Excel but not in Numbers. Although, it seems to work if the key is in the same row as the input cell.

If you are working in Numbers you can do this efficiently with a small AppleScript without going back to Excel or clone. One click and you get the following result:
This script works with Numbers 2.3, which your screenshot suggests you are using. If you are using Numbers 3 it needs a very small adjustment.
    This is the script:
property inputCol : 1 --> col A, as in example
property resultCol : 3 --> col C, as in example
property keysCol : 5 --> col E, as in example
property targDoc : 1 --> 1 is front document; can change to "MyDocName"
property targSheet : 1 --> 1 is first sheet; can change to "MySheetName"
property targTable : 1 --> 1 is first table; can change to "MyTableName"
    tell application "Numbers"
set t to document targDoc's sheet targSheet's table targTable
set keysList to t's column keysCol's cells's value
repeat with i from 2 to t's row count -- assumes 1 Header Row
set inputVal to t's row i's cell inputCol's value
if inputVal is not 0 then --skip blank cells; Numbers 2 reads blanks as 0
--check if Input matches a key:
if inputVal is in keysList then
set t's row i's cell resultCol's value to "found"
                                  else
set t's row i's cell resultCol's value to "not found"
                                  end if
--check if Input contains a key:
                                  repeat with aKey in keysList
if inputVal contains aKey then set t's row i's cell resultCol's value to "found"
                                  end repeat
                        end if
              end repeat
    end tell
    --end of script
To run, copy into AppleScript Editor, change the properties if needed, and click the green triangle 'Run' botton.

  • Referring to Cells in Formulas problem.

I have 2 Tables (and one chart) on one sheet. Table 1 has 3 columns viz. Dates, Electricity & Gas
The Dates column looks like this
    01/01/11 - 31/01/11
    01/02/11 - 28/02/11
    01/03/11 - 31/03/11
    01/04/11 - 30/04/11
    etc etc
Table 2 calculates the number of gas units and kWh of electricity used during the date intervals in Table 1. What I've (unsuccessfully) tried to do is when Table 2 calculates the number of gas units and kWh of electricity these are automatically entered in the appropriate cell next to the relevant date interval in Table 1.
For example in Table 2 the number of Gas units is calculated in cell D11 and the kWh of electricity in cell I11 for a particular date interval corresponding to that in Table 1. The data in Table 2 are manually entered for each date interval given in Table 1. What I would like to do is get Numbers to automatically enter the value that is calculated in cells D11 & I11 in Table 2 into the appropriate cells in Table 1 e.g. for 01/01/11 - 31/01/11 the cells in Table 1 would be C4 & D4 for 01/02/11 - 28/02/11 the cells in Table 1 would be C5 & D5 and for 01/03/11 - 31/03/11 the cells in Table 1 would be C6 & D6 and so on up to 01/12/11 - 31/12/11 whose cells would be C15 & D15.
I've tried doing what is suggested in the *'Referring to Cells in Formulas*' help page but I must be doing something wrong as it just isn't working for my Sheet and Tables. If anyone can hopefully understand my problem and point to a solution I'd be very grateful.
If anyone wants a copy of the sheet to play around with they are more than welcome to have it it's just that I don't know how to make it available on this forum or show the tables as they are set out here on the forum.
    Thanks
    Thanks

As Yvan said, it can't be done the way you want. I personally like to have the backup data behind calculations whenever possible, versus overwriting the older data. I would use separate tables instead of a single Table 2.
I can't quite figure out your "dates". Is it one column or two? For example, is "01/01/11 - 31/01/11" in a single cell? I'm going to assume that's how it is and that it is column A.
Here is how I might do it:
    1) I would move Table 2 to a different sheet (Sheet 2) and give it a name _exactly the same as the first period in column A_. In other words, it would be named "01/01/11 - 31/01/11" (without the quotes). This table will be for this period only. I would also go to the inspector and click "name" so the table name is shown above the table.
    2) In Sheet 1, Table 1 (your Table 1) I would use the following formula in what you said was column C and a similar one for column D
    =IFERROR(INDIRECT("Sheet 2::'"&A&"'::I11"),"")
Note that '"&A&"' has triple-quotes around it. The first one is an apostrophe followed by a quote. The second is a quote followed by an apostrophe. The apostrophes are required due to some of the characters being used in the table names. Normally you wouldn't need them.
    3) For the next month, duplicate Table '1/01/11 - 31/01/11' by right clicking on it in the sidebar and choosing "duplicate". Reposition the duplicate on your sheet, rename it with another set of dates (make sure it matches exactly; copy/paste can be your friend), and enter the data for that period. Table 1 will find it automatically.

  • How do I add amounts in a single cell?

I keep a simple worksheet of my expenditures. Rows are categories; columns are months. I've been doing this with Excel but I am trying to switch to Numbers. I can't figure out how to add data within a single cell with Numbers, i.e. multiple grocery expenses for March.

    Cristina,
I'm not a very good person to ask about Excel or what is like Excel. I left Excel behind about nine years ago.
    This will work though:
Let's say you have items worth $1.75, $12.00 and $7.50. To add them, click once on a blank cell and type:
=1.75+12.00+7.50 then click the green checkmark or hit Return twice. Then assure that the cell is formatted as Currency with 2 places after the decimal point.
The display will look like this:
To add another item, double-click the cell and append the formula. To add a $5.00 item, you would type:
    +5.00
    and hit Return twice.

  • Populate multiple rows and columns based off of a single cell

Does anyone know a way to populate multiple rows and columns based off of the input of a single cell. I'm trying to create a workout tracker that auto populates from a master list of workouts. Example, in A2 the user selects the workout from a drop down menu (St1, St2, St3, etc) and the workout is pulled from the master list and is populated into B2:C5.
I'm using =LOOKUP(A2,Master :: A2:A32,Master :: C2:C32) right now, but it's only drawing the top column. I'm looking for an edit for the formula (or completely new formula) that will place the info from the 1st column of the Master table into the 1st column of the Auto Tracker 1 table and then on down until the 4th column.
Here is a screen shot of what I have now:
And an example of what I'd like to accomplish:
Any and all help is appreciated, and please let me know if there is any more info that I can give that'd help out.

    Hi Mike,
Your screenshots show that you have merged some cells in Column A of both tables. That may be the reason why the LOOKUP function is having trouble working out which range of cells to examine.
    Hope this helps.

    Ian.

  • Modifying single cell in ALV Grid via OO

    Hi All,
Got a problem I hope someone can assist me with.  I have a custom program generating an editable ALV grid.  The users want to update a single cell in a row with value from a custom drop down.  I've got the dropdown working, but I can't work out how to get the value back into the field.  My attempts result in a 'GETWA_NOT_ASSIGNED' short dump.
I'm using the CL_GUI_ALV_GRID->get_selected_cells_id method to get the reference for the field to be modified, but I don't know where to go from here.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.  Btw, my knowledge of OO is passable, but not great, so any explanations of what the code is doing in a proposed solution would be greatly appreciated.
    points will be rewarded.
    Cheers,
    Stephen

    Hello Stephen
Since your dropdown list restrict the already allowed values there should be no special need to validate the selected values.
Simply "grab" the data from the editable ALV into your internal itab in the ABAP report.
I have copied sample report BCALV_EDIT_07 into ZUS_SDN_BCALV_EDIT_07 and modified the report to show how to retrieve the dropdown values (which is simple). Please note that I added the GUI-function 'SAVE' to the GUI-status MAIN100.

  • Concatenation of Data from 4 infoobjects into a single cell in Bex Report

    Hi,
I have loaded ODS with the description data. The source system for loading the ODS is the flat file. The ODS data should be a replica of the flat file.
In the flat file, there is a description field corresponding to a particular ID. This Description is greater than the standard 60 char length. So, I had to split the description while loading the flat file using single line routine in the Transfer Structure.
So, while loading different  the data, I split the description field data from the flat file into 4 infoobjects and the flat file data was loaded into the ODS.
Now, from the reporting point of view, I need to display the entire description data from the 4 info-objects into a single cell in the Bex report.
Please suggest a solution for this.

  • Multiple values in a single cell in report !!

    Hello,
I want to display multiple values in a single cell, each value separated by comma.
Ex: I have Employee and Department.
If a employee works for many departments, all the Department names should be displayed in the same cell in the report.
    Please help !

    Thanks for your replies !
Is there any other way to achieve this ?
There is 1 InfoObject which has 2 fields Employee and Department.
    Employee     Department
    001                A
    001                B
    001                C
In the report there should be 1 row for Employee 001 with all the Departments displayed in the same cell separated by commas.
Can this be done in the backend through a ABAP code?

    Hi,
I´m not quite sure if this is gonna work. You have to make a loop over the screen and then you can change some characteristics of it, which includes the Input option:
      LOOP AT SCREEN.
        IF screen-group1 = 'ABC'.
          screen-input = '0'.
          MODIFY SCREEN.
        ENDIF.
      ENDLOOP.
I´ve used this code for selection screens but could help you. Check in SE11 all options for SCREEN.

  • Is there a way to add multiple borders to a single cell with one click or do I have to add one border at a time for example, one cell with borders on three sides?

I would like to know if there is a way to add multiple borders to a single cell or selection of cells in one click.  At this time, if i want to add for example a top border and a bottom border to a single cell I have to do this in two steps: first select the top border, style, thickness, and color, and then next select the bottom border, style, thickness, and color.  Is there a way to select the top and bottom border of a cell in one click?  Clicking on the top border then holding down the command key while selecting the bottom border does not work, nor does holding down the option key, the control key, or the shift key work. Thanks for your help.

Thank you for the suggestion but this did not work for my Mac.  When a cell is selected for which I want borders, the entire cell is lit up.  Then when I go to the border tool and select style, thickness, and color, the entire lit up cell takes on the border, that is the Outside Edges of the cell now have a border.  So selecting the style, thickness, and color first doesn't work.
If I select the top border first (or any border), the drop down goes away and I can't select multiple borders - I get to choose one at a time.  After selecting one border, style, thickness, and color, said border is now on the spreadsheet.  Then I go back to the border selection and pick another border and the the previously selected style, thickness, and color reverts to null, so I start over with the new border style, thickness, and color.  Yes, it is tedious.
The Fix would allow the user to select multiple borders, say left and right, before the drop down goes away after selecting only one border
Does it have something to do with Allow or Disallow border selection?
    I have Numbers '09 version 2.1 (436)

  • How do I outline a single cell in a numbers spreadsheet

I am trying to emphasise the borders of a single cell in a numbers spreadsheet;  I follow all the instructions I can find in mac help, they just don't make any difference.  I may be ancient, but I can usually suss things out in time; this baffles me.  However, I do realize I may have blundered into the wrong type of help forum here.

To place borders around a cell in Numbers -
Make sure the cell has been selected, i.e. is the active cell.
Click the Inspector tool in the Toolbar -
Then click the Table inspector icon in the Inspector window's toolbar -
In that screen, look down to the section "Cell Borders"...
Click the button for full border (arrow in pic above) -
Adjust the color of the border as needed for visibility (oval in pic above) -
And then you may need to adjust the line weight (thickness) to get it visible on-screen. To do that, click the dropmenu in that section showing "Thin" and select the next item underneath "thin" in the menu. This will make the item just to the right of that menu active - you can then use the arrow-buttons to make the line weight thicker. Although the thinnest setting (0.25 pt) may print okay, on some screens it just doesn't show - especially of the border color has not been set to a hard black. Making it thicker can help in viewing it on-screen.

  • How do I resize a single cell in a TableView?

So I have a tableview, and when a user selects it, I would like to resize that particular cell.
I have all my code in place in terms of drawing that particular cell when selected, but my only problem is I can't seem to figure out how to resize a single cell. For example, if all my cells have a height of 40, I want the selected cell to have a height of 80. I have tried setFrame, I have tried initWithFrame when creating the cell. I figure I'm missing something pretty simple, but I don't see anything as simple as [cell setHeight] or something like that.
    thanks!

What Rick says will work. I have done it. In some cases you may need to set the needsDisplay and or needsLayout properties on your custom cell if you have one.
