Reformatting Drive, Reinstalling OS 10.4

I'm wiping several machines clean and then re-installing the OS on the clean drive. No crashes, just some weird behavior, slow performance and, well, it's time. Haven't done this in a while. So some pointers, refreshers, please?Of course all relevant user data, docs, etc. will be backed up and restored as it was. I'll install the OS from the original disks.
*Reinstalling OS* - I'll install from the original disks (for 10.4), but then that version will be behind 10.4.11. Do I just go out to s-ware update and get the latest updates?
*System & Library* - Do I have to back these up or will these just get restored from the OS install?
Applications - I know it's not as simple as the really old way, where you can just grab apps from one drive and copy to another (sometimes it still works). But should I backup and restore the applications directory as well?
*Users and Preferences, etc* - I'll copy the Users and associated files, but aren't preferences not part of that? Any way to capture that?

Lee:
I suggest that you begin with making a backup/clone of your Users or Home Folder. You can do this using SuperDuper, or just dragging and dropping. This will copy your data including your library with preferences etc. It will not copy you third party applications.
Next follow this procedure to Reformat, the re-install:
Formatting, Partitioning Erasing a Hard Disk Drive
Warning! This procedure will destroy all data on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure you have an up-to-date, tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
Select language
• Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
• Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.

• Click on Options button
• Select Apple Partition Map (PPC Macs) or GUID Partition Table (Intel Macs)
• Click OK
• Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note 1: One partition is normally preferable for an internal HDD.)

• Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
• Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
• Select Erase tab
• Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
• Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
• Click Erase button
• Quit Disk Utility.
Installation Process
Open Installer and begin installation.
Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Optional: Check box to install X11 (Tiger).
Proceed with installation.
After installation computer will restart for setup.
After setup, reboot computer.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Connect to Internet.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo update (PPC) (Tiger)
Computer will restart.
Repair Disk Permissions as previously.
Go to Apple Menu > Software Update.
Install all updates.
Computer may restart after updates.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Good luck.

Brand new imac 27" keeps crashing.  I'm running 10.9.2 with all software up to date.  It will crash on file tranfers to/from/between external drives, web browsing, word processing, video editing, and even while idling.  It used to crash every 15 minutes when I first got it but I reformatted and reinstalled all software.  Now it it still crashing albeit less often.  This is extremely frustrating because I have no idea what I can do to prevent it from happening!
Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm thanks for the input.  Alright. I uninstalled Avast.  Was good for an hour or so.  I was doing some file browsing and crashed again.  Got this message.

  • Reformatting and reinstalling tiger

My computer shipped with OS 10.3. I later upgraded to Tiger. For reasons too lengthy to explain I have to reformat and reinstall. Do I reinstall OS 10.3 and then 10.4 or can I begin with 10.4? What about original apps?

There's no need to reinstall Mac OS X 10.3 if you want to end up with 10.4 on your Mac. If you reformat your disk drive, you will also need to reinstall your apps after you reinstall Mac OS X 10.4, but I suggest that before you reinstall your apps, you do all the OS updates first, to get to 10.4.8.
Before you install each update, I suggest you run the repair disk permissions, then do it again after the update.
Of course, be sure to back up your files before you reformat your hard drive.

  • Reformat and Reinstall OS X Server - Keep Data Store

    OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 on a Mac Mini Late 2012, 2.5 GHz, 16 GB. Server version 4 (14S333)
    Running the following services:
    Caching
    Calendar
    Contacts
    File Sharing
    Mail
    Profile Manager
    Time Machine
    DNS
    Open Directory
I moved my service data and file shares to an external hard drive. When I format my startup hard drive, reinstall the operating system and server, what do I have to do to connect to the service data on my external hard drive? I imagine that I have to establish user accounts with the same credentials.
Really, what I am after is that I'm trying to get Profile Manager to work right with my iOS devices. And I have a wide variety of them (about 12 of them). None of them work. They get a profile installation failure. The research I've done seems to point to just reformat and reinstall. But in doing so, I don't want to lose the service data. Any help you can provide, please...I need reassurance that when I reinstall everything, I'll be able to have access to the data store again.
    Thank you for your direction.

    Hi,
Based on your succes of getting profile manager to work until now, I wouldn't recommend reconnecting any services to old data.
Export any data per service like calendar through a calendar client.app and my advice would be: Start over.
First of all, get a fixed IP adress, a FQDN available from the internet and DNS up and running and get it right. Check and recheck with the right tools in the server.app (top left corner, select your server and go to "overview") and from the terminal:
    host your-ip-address
    host your-domain-name
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
When you have everything up and running, then continue with a validated external certificate or create a self signed certificate and start profilemanager.
    Goodluck

I've never heard of them. But I have to ask, what do they offer that you can't get from Lenovo either direct from their Support site or indirectly via ThinkVantage System Update?

  • Reformat and reinstall

When I first got my Mac, I partitioned the startup drive. Now I'm running out of space and want to reformat as a single drive.
    My plan:
-Back up the entire boot partition to an external drive
    -Reformat the boot drive
    -Re-install OSX3.9
-Copy back and/or reinstall all software, libraries, folders, etc.
Obviously I want the reformatted drive to be as identical to the current one as possible.
Are there any pitfalls to this proceedure?
Will I lose valuable data/settings in the process?
    Any precautions I should take?
Is there any utility software that may make this process simpler?
Thanks to all for any insight!

    G4 1.25 mirror doors   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

If you have no problems with your current system other than hard drive space, then you might do the following:
First, boot from your OS X Installer. Be sure to use the installer for the version of OS X you have installed. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Second, clone the system to your external drive:
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the startup volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    4. Drag the startup volume to the Source entry field.
    5. Select the backup volume from the leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Check the box to Erase Destination. Skip this step if you've already formatted the drive.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
After the cloning is completed open the Startup Disk preference pane and select the external drive system then click on the Restart button. After the system reboots from the external drive do the following:
    1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu to 1 Partition. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended Journaled. Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume mounts on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended Journaled. Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
    7. When the formatting is completed clone the external drive back to the newly formatted internal drive using the same procedure as you did before, except that the external drive becomes the Source and the internal drive becomes the Destination.
Doing the above eliminates the need to reinstall OS X and will preserve your system exactly as it is currently without any data loss.

If you haven't already done so, eject the card by dragging its icon to the Eject icon in the Dock (where the Trash icon usually is.) Make sure the write-lock switch on the card is in the unlocked position. Then reinsert the card and test.
If there's no change, and the same happens with more than one card, the card reader is stuck in write-locked mode. I don't generally advise do-it-yourself hardware repair, but one ASC member managed to fix this problem. I haven't tried the fix myself and I can't offer any guidance beyond what's in that discussion. If you cause damage, don't expect your warranty to cover it. I suggest you instead make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • Rescue data on reformatted drive: Which programm is the best?

While being in the progress to backup all my data on a new 1 TB disk using time machine I accidentally reformatted an external drive containing valuable data (how stupid can one be?). While browsing the internet for a soluion I came across 2 programms which might help: FileSalvage and Stellar Phoenix Macintosh Data Recovery) Are these programms any good (I don´t mind the costs as I´m rather desperate or should I try a professional data recovery service in the first place?
I haven´t touched the reformatted drive since I reformatted it so the data should still be there.
Thanks very much for your help
    Wolfgang Fogel

I tried Data RescueII but it didn´t give good results (using the test version to see which files can be recovered). It seems you have to protect the disc beforehand (similar to DiskWarrior)
Best regards and thanks for the reply

  • Reformatting and Reinstalling new software

*Reformatting and Reinstalling new softwarewI've got a Vado HD 8gb model which I've used several times but now it wants to freeze shortly after turning it on. It will freeze both on battery power and also if I've removed the battery and connect it directly to my laptop via USB. Once the camera freezes it is not recognized by my computer.
On camera start up I've been able to get to the version/date/time set up screen by repeatedly hitting the trash button on power up, but this doesn't work everytime. When I am able to get to that menu I will set the correct date and time but when I exit that screen into the li've video I've noticed that the date will always be set to 0/0/70 and then it will freeze within a few second of seeing li've video. I was able to update the camera to the latest firmware on one occasion by hitting the trash button repeatedly and once to the "version" screen leaving it there and not going any further. The firmware update said it was complete on my laptop and told me to power the camera down and then back on, which after doing that the camera successfully showed the camera updating the firmware.
My thinking is that there is a bad file somewhere that DOES NOT get overwritten when updating the firmware. If I can catch the "version" screen on power up and then plug it into my laptop the computer will then recognize the camera and I can access all of the files stored on it.
Is it possible to completely reformat the camera through laptop as if it was a regular thumb/flash dri've and then to completely reinstall all new software onto the camera To me this seems to be a software issue and as I said earlier, there might be a file that doesn't get overwritten when updating the firmware that might be corrrupt.
I am running Windows 7, 3gb ram, everything up to date !!

Pretty much same issue I have, and I think you're right about the Vado being corrupt and needs to be completely restored.
    Hope somebody can help.

  • Wiping drive, reinstalling OS

    Hi All:
I have a G5 that, after time and multiple users, has become a bit dodgy. Rather than put up with the bugginess, I'd like to wipe the hard drive, reinstall the OS, and start with as clean a slate as possible. I know I'm in for a lot of time reinstalling software and updates, but I'm OK with that.
My main question is, are there any problems or things to look out for in doing this? If anyone has done this and experienced problems or can offer advice, I'd appreciate hearing about it.
    Thanks!!

Hi there, Just make sure you have the correct Install Disc, and that it indeed works before you erase everything.
We might fix your problem(s) easier, but if you have no data you need to save on that HD, then...
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the Erase tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to install.

  • Formatted USB and installed windows but cannot reformat drive

Recently ive tried to install windows onto my laptop. I formatted USB and installed windows but cannot reformat drive the drive. I even tried to have bootcamp reformat the drive and it says it cant. I opened disk utility and it cannot do anything to it. I just want my flashdrive working again.

Your USB flash Sandisk is correctly formatted as a FAT disk and called Wininstall when you used Bootcamp Assistant and checked the second check box to download BC drivers.
If you are unable to see the FAT partition which will become NTFS for you Windows installation, that is a different issue.
Have you looked at https://help.apple.com/bootcamp/mac/5.0/help/ ?

  • Copied firefox to another drive, had to format c drive, reinstalled firfox on c drive, how do I get my bookmarks from the firefox that I saved on d drive is there a file that I need to copy over to the new firefox

I had to reformat my C: drive and reinstall winxp. I copied the firefox folder from my c drive be fore I formate the drive. • MAJOR HD PROBLEMS..disc cant be deactivated,  trying to reformat and reinstall osx

As the title mentions, I cant seem to partition my HD in order to properly reformat and then reinstall osx..
I basically want a fresh new factory macbook with the original lion osx (dec 2011 macbook)..
Reasons why its not working out:
Macbook when turned on goes automatically in the options menu with reinstall os, DU, seek help online and set back a time machine backup (dont have)..
Already erased my hitachi 500 gb HD and the Macintosh HD partition a couple of times (on fastest way setting, and once in the 3 times overwrite setting which took 4 hours, not tried the safest 7 times overwrite way..)
Did a control disk with DU sometimes its fine and sometimes an error pops up saying it cant be fixed.
After trying to reinstall an os mavericks in this case, after 4 hours or 3andahalf it restarts itself in the same options menu (DU, reinstall, seek online help, time machine)..
Partitioning again wont work because the disk cant be deactivated. .
    What to do guys? ?

In order to repartition the drive, you can't be using it as any kind of boot drive. That includes Recovery Mode since that is a hidden partition on the drive. So the OS won't let you remove the drive its currently started up to out from under yourself.
Restart in Internet Recovery Mode by holding down Command+Option+R so the Mac is running from the firmware. You'll get what looks like the same work screen as the regular Recovery Mode, but you'll be able to repartition and completely wipe the drive. Then install OS X. The version of OS X the Mac shipped with will be installed.
Do not upgrade it to any version of OS X past that, or the new owner will not be able to reinstall any upgrade since it would require your App Store ID and password to do so.
Already erased my hitachi 500 gb HD and the Macintosh HD partition a couple of times (on fastest way setting, and once in the 3 times overwrite setting which took 4 hours, not tried the safest 7 times overwrite way..)
For future reference, unless you're trying to protect classified government documents, or other highly sensitive data, there's no reason to do any more than a one pass erase. It takes expensive, specialized hardware and software to have even a slight chance of recovering data that has been written over even just once. There's no software consumers can buy that will recover anything from such a drive.
