Refreshing Database on Source Control

I've been posting quite a bit lately about my challenges with Source Control-- RoboSource. I would like to completely clear out the database, remove any links between my Project and RoboSource, and start totally over. I've tried this several times and followed some of the resources on how to remove a project from version control, but it doesn't seem to really 100% disconnect and when I try to reconnect to version control it seems to reconnect to the previous database (even if I delete everything in the database) and; therefore I'm still having the same issues. Everything I try seems to only gunk things up even more, make things run more slowly, etc. I asked my IT department to clear out the database and they said this was a version control issue. How should I go about a new start? I'm looking forward to becoming a source control guru and helping others as I've recieved so much feedback and help.
Thanks,
Sleepless over Source Control

I'm hoping that I've figured it out. I noticed that even though I had deleted the files from the Root Node ($) the files weren't being deleted from the Raw Root (*). Not that I really fully understand what it means, I think I've successfully cleaned out the Database! I'm slowly becoming more comfortable with source control, but I still am struggling with one basic concept and I've seen it discussed on other threads-- this has to do with the C:drive and Shared drives.
If add the project to source control from a location on my C drive, then open the project via source control onto my coworkers c:drive (all of the files are then copied to working folder on the c drive), are all of the topics copied to source control and therefore do not need an additional copy of the the project on a shared drive?  I'm not sure if that makes sense.

    Hi MM,
    Thanks for  your post.
If you open this solution from a local folder(not stored in TFS), and try to compare that same file, what’s the result? We need confirm this issue relate to VS Schema Compare tool or relate to TFS Source Control first.

  • Looking For Guidance: Best Practices for Source Control of Database Assets

    Database Version: 11.2.0.3
    OS: RHEL 6.2
    Source Control: subversion
This is a general question aimed at database professionals, however, it is not specific to any oracle version, etc.  Its a leadership question for other Oracle shops regarding source control.
The current trunk, in my client's source control, is the implementation of a previous employee who used ER Studio.  After walking the batch scripts and subordinate files , it was determined that there would be no formal or elegant way to recreate the current version of the database from our source control - the engineers who have contributed to these assets are no longer employed or available for consulting.  The batch scripts are stale, if you will.
To clean this up and to leverage best practices, I need some guidance on whether or not to baseline the current repository and how to move forward with additions of assets; tables, procs, pkgs, etc.  I'm really interested in how larger oracle shops organize their repository - what directories do you use, how are they labeled...are they labeled with respect to version?
    Assumptions:
    1. repository (database assets only) needs to be baselined (?)
    2. I have approval to change this database directory under the trunk to support best practices and get the client steered straight in terms of recovery and
    Knowns:
    1. the current application version in the database is 5.11.0 (that's my client's application version)
    2. this is for one schema/user of a database (other schemas under the database belong to different trunks)
This is the layout that we currently have and for the privacy of the
client I've made this rather generic.  I'd love to have a fresh
start...how do I go about doing that...initially, I like using
SqlDeveloper's ability to create sql scripts from a connected target.

HiWe are using Data ONTAP 8.2.3p3 on our FAS8020 in 7-mode and we have 2 aggregates, a SATA and SAS aggregate. I want to decommission the SATA aggregate as I want to move that tray to another site. If I have a flexvol containing 3 qtrees CIFS shares can I use data motion (vol copy) to move the flex vol on the same controller but to a different aggregate without major downtime? I know this article is old and it says here that CIFS are not supported however I am reading mix message that on the version of data ONTAP we are now on does support CIFS and data motion however there will be a small downtime with the CIFS share terminating. Is this correct? Thanks

  • Refreshing the Data Source View in Analysis Services

I have added columns to the SQL Database table that is used as a dimension in an Analysis Services Cube.  The new columns will be used as additional Property Fields for the dimension.  When I attempted to refresh the Data Source view so that the additional columns are present, I am given the following error:
    System.Data
Property not accessible because 'Parent Columns and Child Columns don't have type-matching columns'
I have done nothing to the columns used for the parent of child and the error message provides nothing to gon on. Does anyone have any ideas on this?
    Gary

    Olga,
Thanks for your response.  I will try and answer your questions
    1) I have not tried removing the columns yet.  I will try that this afternoon but have limited hope.  The two columns I added are simple text columns that will be used as attributes in the dimension.  I have made no change to the parent or child columns.
    2) The table I modified is the source table for a parent-child dimension.
    3) The reference to the "check list" does not take me to any kind of check list.
    4) The parent-child dimensions I am trying to modify have been in use for months and the parent and child columns do have the dame data types.
    5) I have also check the data types between the dimension table and the fact table.  they use the same data types (small int).
    6) I have not made a collection for the parent key, it is a single column. The remainder of your last paragraph is not clear to me. Can you give me an example.
I am fairly inexperienced with Analysis Services, please talk slow and use small words  :-)
    Thanks again for your help!

  • How do I use Perforce Source Control on a substituted drive

    Hello all,
I am wrestling my way through using perforce as an integrated source control package in Labview.
The path has many potholes but seems possible.
    My latest challenge:
    Substituted Paths.
In a professional source control environment there are many users with many views/workspaces and it is good proactice for each one to have a unique name [user][machine][branchname][myprojectstructure]
Labview is notorious for requiring fixed, absolute paths due to the way .vi's remember their callers, my previous practice using IBM/Rational clearcase was to substitue ("subst B: ." ) the project root [myprojectstructure] to another drive, say B: for example.  This makes Labview is happy as the paths are now fixed, the developer is happy as they don't have to check out a miriad of files.
This practice is widespread in the embedded software development world and isn't exactly innovative.
    Perforce
Clearcase integrated into Labview works seamlessly, you just point the path to the substituted drive and all is well.
    Perforce, not so much.
The setup options within labview whilst being intuitive and easy to use, don't appear allow this method.
Does anyone know how to do the equivalent in Perforce?
    Thanks in advance,

    Thanks John,
I will see if this works
I hadn't thought about substituting the drive first and then populating the workspace.
I can see that this implimentation requires discipline,
There is a significant danger of refreshing the wrong workspace and trashing modified files.

  • Opened a SSAS project through connecting to analysis service server.. now need to put into source control

    hi there:
I've connected to a SSAS project using connecting to analysis service server ... After a few modifications, I'd like to save it under a different name and eventually get put into the source control...
Can someone tell me how to do that?
    thanks

    Hi Cat_ca,
In your scenario, you can create a
Import Analysis Services 2008 Database project to import the AS database to the project, and then change the database name following the steps below.
Right-click the project and select Properties.
Go to deployment option on the left pane.
    Change the Database name.
Then deploy the project to Analysis Services server. The screenshot below are for your reference.

  • RoboHelp 6 Source Control Bindings

Without going into best practices about source control
methodology (we don't branch), I have a question about RoboHelp 6
and source control bindings with Visual SourceSafe.
We have a help project that is bound to a project in VSS. We
need to create a copy of the VSS project and work on that
separately. After creating the project in VSS with a copy of the
RoboHelp files, there seems to be no way to update the RoboHelp
project to point to the new location in VSS. We searched all the
property and settings boxes we could find to no avail.
In searching, the xpj file seemed to contain the only source
control binding information. We went so far as to change this file
in a text editor to update the new project and even point at the
correct file it references in VSS for the new VSS project. This is
in the vc::cookie setting under misc properties in the file. When
opening this file RoboHelp updates it back to the original somehow
even when the correct one is in SourceSafe.
So, please tell us how to update the bindings for source
    control.
An aside. Recently our help files were moved to a new VSS
database. The old one was taken offline. In this case when Robohelp
saw that the old database was no longer there, it prompted us with
a dialog to correct the binding. Now that we need to point Robohelp
at a new VSS project in the same VSS database, while the original
still exists, we can find no way to change the settings.
    Thanks...

There are several things to do to remove a copy of a project
    from VSS:
    1. Make a backup, as always.
    2. Copy the RH project to your new location.
    3. Set all the files as writable.
    4. As you've discovered, you need to remove the contents of
    the miscproperties tag.
    5. Delete the cpd and sss files, and maybe the pss file (I'm
not sure of this one, but I'm fairly sure it gets recreated when
    you re-open the project).
    6. Open the project in RH and add to VSS from within RH. (I
recommend using RH to add into VSS, as this will re-populate the
miscproperties section of the xpj file. If you don't, you have to
manually "open from source control" each time you open the
    project.)
You should now have a new project in VSS. And you have
backups, right? (not that I'm paranoid or anything...)

  • Connections with third-party source control - will they be retained?

I have RoboHelp installed on my hard drive. Company is swapping out my hard drive and I will need to reinstall it.
All my RH projects are connected to a third-party source control mechanism (Visual SourceSafe).
When I reinstall RH, will the connections to Visual SourceSafe be retained for all my projects?

    Hi,
Just getting the latest version should work. I had a similar problem after a crash. RoboHelp can't detect which projects are in the VSS database, but after getting them, it all worked fine.
You may however still want to backup your projects on a removable media to be sure. After the reinstall, just make sure the VSS client in installed, copy your project from the media and get back to work -- Could it be that simple? Well, it was for me.

  • Refreshing Database From Planning

    Hello,
I have three datases in my Planning application.
I am going to perform a refresh from Planning to Essbase.
Is it possible to control which database is refreshed?
    - If so, please tell me how. or point me to a resource I can use as a guide.
Or do I have to refresh all three every time I perform a refresh?
    Thanks,

    user1651519 wrote:
I am a little hung up on this - so please forgive me - I think I need a bit more clarification.
I have Essbase and Planning installed on separate servers.
    Application: BUDGET
    Database: Sales
    Finance
If I use the following command:
    HspCubeRefresh.Cmd /A:<application_name> /U:<user_name> [P:<password>]
    C [D] [F[S|V]][RMIPORT:<rmi_port>] [L] [DEBUG])
    [R] - Specifies a refresh
[D] - Specifies the database for the refresh
So if I specify my Sales database - to me this looks like I will only be pushing my Sales metadata from Planning to Essbase.
    Am I incorrect?
If I am correct - then the Finance database metadata is not refreshed from Planning - Right?
Why would the command allow me to specify a database if it is going to force a refresh of all databases in that application?
    Dave,
You need not specify any database name at /D. It is just to let planning know that you want to refresh database.
You have two options when you do a refresh.
    1. database
    2. security filters
/D specifies that you are gonna refresh database and by default it will update changes to all databases( nothing needs to be mentioned in specific). /F specify that you are gonna refresh filters. You can use both parameters as well.
I suggest you to look at the planningweb goto administration--->manage database. This will give you a clear picture of what a Refresh does.
    Hope this helps!

  • The project file is not bound to source control, but the solution contains source control binding information for it.

This may be more of a SQL Server Management Studio question, but I couldn't find a SSMS forum...
I've got a database solution that contains several projects.  They're just to keep track of changes to stored procedures, triggers, views, etc in a few databases I maintain.  There is a problem with two of the projects though.  No matter what I do, I can't seem to get them bound to source control right.  When I open the solution, I get:
The project file is not bound to source control, but the solution contains source control binding information for it.
With two options, use solution binding and remove solution binding.  If I keep the solution binding, everything works fine.  But it's really annoying to have to deal with every time I open the solution.  If I remove the solution binding, the projects are now unbound again.  If I try to fix them (using the change source control or Add Selected Projects to Source Control options under the File->source control menu), I just end up in the same situation.  I've even tried deleting the projects and re-creating them from scratch, then re-adding them to VSS.  If I open the solution files in a text editor I can see the SCC tags in every project, but these two.  Since I can't manually add the tags, and Management Studio itself only seems to want to bind them the wrong way, I'm getting really frustrated.
Can anyone point me toward a way to bind these so they work like the rest?

However, that does not appear to be the ONLY cause of the problem.  I am a single user and only using TFS2010 and SSMS2008R2.  My issue is that I wanted a solution file for each project so that they could managed independently, and a super-solution
file that contained all projects, so that I could perform system-wide searches and cross-checks.
    I solved the problem by:
    1. Choosing the option to use solution binding, then
    2. Adding another project to the solution.  This forced the re-write of the solution file.
    3. Adding another script to the project.  This forced the re-write of the project file.
    4. Checking in all changes.
    5. Deleting the new script and the extra project,
    6 Checking in all changes.
This appears to have solved the problem.

  • Bringing SSAS Source Control Up to date

    Hi all
I've recently taken over managing an MI team who have a set of SSAS 2008 cubes deployed with a production and development server.  We also have a TFS 2008 project which has the source for the cubes.  However, the team have some bad work practices
such as updating code directly in production without updating source control or testing properly in development first.
I want to first bring TFS source control up to date with the latest code from live and wondered on best way to do this?  I will then lock down who can alter code in production to enforce a better release process.  Any help greatly appreciated!

Thank you David, the issue is we already have solutions in TFS but these are out of date as changes have been made to the AS databases outside of TFS directly on the server.   I ideally want to check out the existing cube solutions and somehow update
them with the latest versions by pulling them in from the AS server databases, then lock down the release process.
Otherwise I guess I'll have to delete the solutions and start again using your method but I'd rather not lose what source control history we have.

  • 3 questions - Source control vs. sub-projects

    Hi -
    I have 3 related questions:
1.) Seems like I remember a warning from a long time ago
(older versions) about having to check out the entire project -
because the user needs to access the .mpj/.xpj file. How does the
new RoboSource Control 6 handle checking out the project file?
2.) Also - Is it better to use sub-projects (merged projects)
or Source Control to support multiple users?
I believe one "con" to using merged projects is that you have
to manually deal with consolidating context IDs... Can anyone give
me some other pros and cons for each method?
3.) If I go with Source Control as the method for handling
multiple users - combining all of my topics into one project - I'm
concerned about the size of the project. I've encountered seriously
long compile times and corruption in past versions. Can anybody
provide real-world numbers for project size and compile time in
    RoboHelp 6?
    Thank you.

Oops, seemingly my fingers started typing the usual

(users of the RoboHelp application). I was told that creating
seperate projects would allow multiple authors to use RoboHelp -
then they would be merged into a single project for the end
customer. So, my concern is about which method (
sub-projects/merged projects or Source Control) is better for
    supporting multiple authors.
RoboSource Control is set up in such a way that multiple
authors can concurrently work at the same project. As soon as one
author manipulates a file from the project, this file is locked for
the other users. As long as different author ditribute the work on
the topics they can work without interferences. Exempt from this
optimistic description are the central files valif for the whole
project: HHC (table of contents), H and ALI (context sensitive
help), GLO (glossary), and BRS (browse sequences). the same is true
for the HHK (index), as long as you set up the project for using
    this HHK-file.
So if you can teach your authors to concentrate on their
topics (and index entries) only in their work, and handle the other
stuff centrally, no one will ever notice that she is not the only
one working on the project. With up to five or six authors even the
conflicts are not so bad. Just ask the other who has locked, say,
the HHC to check it in and you can immediately work on the table of
    contents yourself.
The other method using separate projects and merging the
stuff at run-time avoids these problems, but at a cost. Every
author can work on his (sub-) project to her heart's delight, but
getting the stuff together to form a seamless unit which looks to
the user like one help system only, takes some work. If users
should be able to open the help system via a context sensitive call
and the help should look a unified whole (all the help within one
window, index and TOC seamlessly merged, navigation through links
without errors), you'll have to fiddle around a bit.

to manually deal with consolidating context IDs... Can anyone give
me some other pros and cons for each method?
If your programmers open the same help file for every help
call, you'll indeed have to manipulate the context IDs in a way
that RoboHelp does not support in its interface. Where a 'usual'
    mapping reads:
    CONTEXT_STRING=PATH/TO/MY_TOPIC.HTM
you'll have to write something like:
    CONTEXT_STRING=MS-ITS::MAIN_HELP_FILE.CHM::/SPECIAL_HELP_FILE.CHM::/PATH/TO/MY_TOPIC.HTM
For each topic in one of the slave help files you'll have to
manually enter such a line into the MAP.ALI of the main project.
This works remarkably well, unless a user tries to open a
slave help by doubleclicking it in the Windows Exporer; he will get
an error message instead of a TOC.

Nope, as we are running X5 I can't answer this. But anyway, a
2,000 topic project takes some two minutes as far as compilation
goes; I wouldn't worry too much about this.

  • How to store Mapviewer objects (styles, themes, maps) in source control ?

I'm wondering what's the best way for storing mapviewer data in source control ?
So far MapBuilder provides the import/export metadata feature but it doesn't do cached map objects. Ideally we need an automated way to backup/restore these objects into a new database instance from source control for a daily build type setup.
The MapBuilder text format looks promising, in that it supports diffs. Other options include dmp files but then we wouldn't be able to compare versions.
Has anyone faced this problem ?
What do the Oracle Mapviewer devs recommend ?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
What kind of error are you seeing?

  • SSIS package to load Source Control Explorer details into a table

    Hi Guys,
We are maintaining our code in Source control explorer,TFS.
We have created a table in our database which will have columns like names, latest, last_checkin.
I like to read from TFS those values and load it into database.
We need to create reports based on the locations and send it to our client.
Any ideas or path i have to take in order to achieve this, will be very grateful.
    Cheers!!!!!

Why would you use SSIS to read from TFS?
    And then create a report?
    Wrong design to my taste.
You need a lot of .Net code as you need TFS APIs used this way.
    var server = RegisteredTfsConnections.GetProjectCollection(new Uri("http://hostname:8080/"));
    var projects = TfsTeamProjectCollectionFactory.GetTeamProjectCollection(server);
    var versionControl = (VersionControlServer)projects.GetService(typeof(VersionControlServer));
    var newestDate = DateTime.MinValue;
    Item newestItem = null;
    var items = versionControl.GetItems("$/theproject/trunk/setup/*.msi");
    foreach (var item in items.Items)
    if (item.ItemType != ItemType.File)
    continue;
    if (item.CheckinDate > newestDate)
    newestItem = item;
    newestDate = item.CheckinDate;
    newestItem.DownloadFile("C:\\temp\\" + Path.GetFileName(newestItem.ServerItem));
this still can be done in a Script Task, but defeats the purpose of using ETL.
