ReInstall Panther ver.10.3 on IMAC G5 800Mhz

I want to re-install Panther ver.10.3 on IMAC G5. I have received the Mac OS X Panther version 10.3 CDs from Apple.
Here is what I did:
I put the CD1 in the drive
Turned the computer ON
Held the "C" key down before the chime
I saw the Apple logo
I saw the spinning star go round and round
Then, the screen goes blue
I see and can move the mouse cursor
That's it. Nothing.
How can I restore this Mac?

You will need your serial number.  If you have the discs you should be all set.  If not, then you should be able to find it thru your Adobe account online if you registered the software previously.
You might want to contact Adobe Support thru chat before you activate the new installation if you would like to free up the activation that might have been left in limbo.
For the link below click the Still Need Help? option in the blue area at the bottom and choose the chat option...

  • How do I remove Snow Leopard and reinstall Panther?

How do I remove Snow Leopard 10.6.2 from my G5 and reinstall Panther 10.3? My G5 only came with 10.3 CD and I can't start up from that. I would like to eventually get to 10.5 Leopard but don't have a CD/DVD of that either. Is there somewhere I can download the software?
I use Adobe CS3 designer software for my business. It's been crashing since I updated to Snow Leopard. I thought I could go back down in OS's but for some reason I can't start up from the 10.3 CD.
    Any idea's are much appreciated.

First, You will need your original Panther install DVD to return to Panther. Before doing so, I would make a bootable clone of my Sno boot volume on an external drive for purposes of backup, possible migration, and fail-safe--even if you have a TM backup. Your only probably trouble-free way of returning to Panther is erase and install. Before you do so, check the compatibility of your hardware and software; check [here|http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/forum:start] and [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3258].
Given that you have dealt with any compatibility issues, your only problem should be migrating from your clone in a way that avoids your Sno problems. In this regard, you generally can drag and drop you data files from Sno without issue (see links below--use Preferential Treatment before migrating anything and the by-hand migration guide to accomplish your migration). I would reinstall my apps by hand. I would not migrate your users or settings. The remaining issue is dealing with the remaining contents of your user folder(s).
I would acquire [Preferential Treatment|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22790] and use this app to fix the your user preferences--the items in your User/Library/Preferences folder(s). After doing so, use [this guide|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6185507] to do the actual migration of the items in your user folder(s).
After reinstalling Panther, you will need to install Leopard. But note that upgrade disk to Leopard are difficult to find and, especially, at a reasonable price. You may need to buy a box set.
If you decide to make the move, then, in your case, I suggest that you do an upgrade install. If you do an upgrade, then, after installing, all you file, setting, users, and apps will be in their proper places, except for incompatible apps which will be archived in the Incompatible Applications folder. Upgrading is a very sound method.
I would not upgrade to Leo using any method unless, again, I had an external drive with a bootable clone of my internal-drive boot volume (this time a Panther clone) on it. I think that there is enough risk upgrading to Leopard that such conservatism is warranted. I would not use time machine for an installation backup; I don't trust it enough.
If you do not like Leopard or get a bad install, then you can restore your internal back to Panther using the clone, and nothing will be lost. In doing an upgrade install, the clone is your data backup and fail-safe device. In both cases, you can clone with Disk Utility, SuperDuper, or Carbon Copy Cloner. If you like the idea of cloning for a backup, etc., then I would acquire one of the last two mentioned programs.

  • Need to reinstall OS on late 2009 27" iMac but I can't locate OS DVD

    Hello,
I need to reinstall OS on late 2009 27" iMac but I can't locate OS DVD. The original HDD is toast and I'm going to replace it myself. I simply need to know how I go about working with Apple so they can mail me a copy of the original install DVD.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Ken

Contact Apple and for a nominal charge they will ship you a replacement set of the original DVDs. If you are going to replace the HD yourself please note that off the shelf HD's will not work due to heat sensors integrated in to the ones Apple uses in the 2009 and later machines. I'd recommend contacting an AASP to replace it and/or for some advice on how to make it work.

  • Had to reinstall Panther - now CD won't recognize OS9 disks

I have a B&W G3 with 2 hard drives in it. Had to replace the larger of the two, and of course it was the one with my startup system (or one of them.) I could boot from my 9.2 startup disk which was on the other hard drive. I made a copy, using the disk utility restore function, on to a backup drive so that I didn't lose everything on the crashed disk. Then I replaced the hard drive, partitioned it and reinstalled Panther all the way to the most recent update. I was able to capture just about 98% of all of my previous system setting, extensions, etc., yet now when I put in an older CD (that was comaptible with OS9) it says it is "unrecognizable" and wants to inititialize or eject. When I go to system profiler it says there is no OS9 drivers for the CD. It is the original CD ROM from Apple, a matshita CDR. How can I recapture the driver? Where would it be?

    Daisy:
Since you already have everything in place on separate partitions, and it is so much of a hassle moving stuff around, I suggest you leave things alone until you need to something by way of re-installation.
In terms of backing up a firewire external HDD would be prefereable as you could then use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to clone to the firewire external, which you can then use as an emergency startup drive. It makes backing up a lot easier. SuperDuper is very easy to use and efficient. CCC works well, too, but is slightly more complex.

So, Cornelius, what you are saying is that I am making it harder for things to function smoothly? The reason I have been doing the partitions is to save time when running something like Disk Utility. It goes a lot faster on a 20GB than it would on a 100GB, or am I wrong in assuming that?
Now I have the daunting task of removing everything that I have finally gotten in place to the backup drive, and reformatting my MAC! UGH! Is there an easy way to do this without re-installing the major programs I use? When I was getting the data off of the previous bad drive, I dragged and dropped them onto the backup disk (a Simpletech 160GB USB) and that was very time consuming. I think it was slow because I have the old USB 1.1 and the backup is a USB 2.0. I did not use the backup software that came with it, because I was in panic mode and accidentally erased the program when I formatted the backup drive. Now I have it, but haven't used it yet. Even so, I was able to drag and drop most of the files and it worked fine, but I had to reinstall the OSX, QuarkXpress, and Indesign. This has been going on for a couple weeks and I am still tweaking things to get it right.
When I used the "restore" function it put the drive on the backup but not in a folder. When I dragged and dropped it went across like folders. Do you have any advice for me to make this less painful?
+One more point - if I did use the install OS9 drivers the first time, and it didn't, what would it do if it was only one partition? Would I get them back or not?+
You can check to see if the OS 9 drivers are installed by going to Apple Menu > About this Mac > More info > Hardware > ATA. In the lower section of the main panel go down the list and look for OS 9 drivers installed. It will say yes, or no.
    Good luck.

  • Cannot reinstall Panther OS

I am trying to do an erase and install.
I boot the system and put in the OS disk
I back up whatever needs to be.
I start the OS install and a windows comes up asking to restart. I do so and another window comes up asking for permission. I click ok.
The system restarts and goes right back to the desktop. Over and over.
Troubleshooting I have tried so far:
    Repaired drive permissions.
    Tried someones elses Panther
For the **** of it, tried someone elses Tiger
Same result for everything. System just reboots back to desktop.
I am an Apple newbie, so I may be doing something wrong.

    Hi Punisher2006!
As per the specs in This Topic, you were running Tiger 10.4.7.
Is there a specific reason that you ae now reinstalling Panther 10.3.x?
Just to verify, you have already done a backup, and you have erased the HD, correct?
After you have the CD/DVD inserted, when you restart, are you holding down on the C key, until the restart is complete?

    About Archive and Install
    • Depending on the Install disc that you use.... this will install a fresh copy of your current OS or copy of an earlier version.
    • This kind of installation automatically moves existing system files to a folder named Previous System, then installs Mac OS X again.
    • If Mac OS X is not already present, you cannot select Archive and Install. You must Erase and Install instead.
    Steps Prior to Installing
    • Unplug all peripherals.
    • Boot from the volume containing Mac OS X, and run Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions.
    • Boot from the OS X Install CD using the "C" key. and run Disk Utility's Repair Disk function
How to use Archive and Install
    1. Start up from your Mac OS X Panther Install Disc using the "C" key..
    2. Select your language, and click Continue. The Welcome to the Mac OS X Installer window appears
    3. Click Continue.
    4. After reading the information, click Continue. The Software License Agreement window appears.
    5. After reading the information, click Continue.
    6. An agreement sheet appears, click Agree.
    7. Select a Volume to install onto.
    8. Click Options, click Customize and make your selections, the click OK.
    9. Select Archive and Install, then OK.
    10. Click Continue in the next dialog window.
    11. Select the volume which already has Mac OS X installed.
    12. Click OK.
    13. Click Continue to begin the installation....... When done Restart.
    14. Go to the folder Application/Utilities and run Disk Utility to repair permissions again.
    • Your old system will be stored in folder called "Previous Systems" at the root level of your startup volume. If you would later like to delete this folder, you may need to change its permissions.

    Hello all,

  • My 15" iMac G4 800mhz will not recognize my iPhone 4s at all. Please Help, There is more information below. Thanks.

My 15" iMac G4 800mhz will not recognize my iPhone 4s at all. It charges but doesn't load as external memory or in itunes.
I am running OS X 10.4.11 and using iTunes 9.2.1.
I have tried to be as specific as possible, I hope somebody can help as this is the main thing I will be using my mac for.
    Thanks in advance.

....and an 800mHz Mac cannot officially run 10.5.8. There may be some third-party hacks to allow tricking the installer into thinking the computer qualifies and permit the install to continue, but 10.5 will be very sluggish on that machine even if you have a lot of RAM.
The other problem is valid 10.5 retail install disks. They are getting hard to find, only on DVD (not all early iMacs have DVD-capable drives), and often sell today for more than their original price of US$129.

  • Need to reinstall Panther on a completely erased drive on my iMac... Help?

    Here's the history:
I had the SMART status failing notification but my drive was still working so I backed up all of its contents to an external hard drive.
I sent my iMac into the Apple store and had the drive completely replaced (under warranty).
When I got home, I started it up, but didn't want to go through the full reinstall and upgrade of the system. I tried to restore from my ext HD using Disk Utility – this required a complete erase and reformat of the drive. The restore didn't work since there wasn't enough space.
So I then used Carbon Copy Clone to create a disk image of the ext HD and tried to restore from the disk image to my iMac. That also didn't work because of disk space.
I then deleted some of the user documents to free up about 40GB of space to minimize the amount to clone. Instead of restoring from a disk image though, I restored through the backup in CCC. This worked, but when I went to reboot the iMac, it wouldn't. It got through the gears, but then went black and said there was no system. It went through 10 retries and then just stopped.
I am now trying to reinstall from the Mac OS X Install discs, but this isn't working either. I insert the disc, and hold down the "c" key to start up from it, I get to the select destination and the drive has a red exclamation warning on it saying the system can't be installed onto the drive.
    I'm completely out of answers
Any help would be greatly appreciated This is my workhorse computer for my design studio at home (I am self-employed) and I'm relying on a laptop for now.
    THANKS

  • Intalling Panther or Tiger on an imac G3

    Hello,
I have a Blueberry color Imac G3 which was made in spring of 2000. I recently bought a new ibook and want to upgrade the older mac as my sister is now using it. I asked this ? a long time back but am requesting any further help you can give. The imac has 640 of ram and the Hardrive is 30 gig. There's almost nothing taking up any HD space and almost all is available. This mac is mostly used to surf the net. I do however want to install either Panther or Tiger on this unit. The person who responded before said to use a retail version for a full install. Also, would either Panther or Tiger work on this mac?
Lastly, what does the install involve??
    Thanks very much
    1bookG4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    omshanti:
I am not familiar with your computer, but it should easily support Panther, maybe even Tiger. Here are the basic requirements:
    -Macintosh with a PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
    -Built-in USB
-At least 128MB of physical RAM
-Built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
In terms of installation, here are some suggestions to Archive and install. If you choose to do a clean install see note below:
    Panther: Archive and Install
If you do not have a Full Retail Version you can get one on eBay relatively inexpensively.
If you have the right disks here is what you do.
    1. Warning: Although we will use Archive and Install there is always a risk something can go wrong. As a precaution back up your User Folder and any apps you can't afford to lose.
    2. Check to see if you have the latest Firmware Update: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
    3. Boot from the install disk holding down the C key.
    4. Once booted go to the Installer Menu and open Disk Utility.
    5. Run Repair Disk. If there are problems, run it until no problems are reported. If it reports that it can't repair the problems you might need TechTool Pro or Disk Warrior.
    6. While still in Disk Utility run Repair Permissions.
    7. Quit Disk Utility and open the Installer.
    8. Choose the option to Archive and Install. This saves your data in a Previous Systems folder, which you can retrieve after installation.
    9. You might want to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer Drivers to save Hard Drive space.
    10. Proceed with installation.
    11. After installation is complete computer will restart. Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility) and Repair Permissions.
    NOTE (below):
    To do a clean install:
Follow steps 1 through 4 above.
    a. In Disk Utility select your HD in left panel and Erase in main panel.
    b. Be sure Volume Format is Mac OS Extended and the checkbox Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed is checked.
    c. Select Options at bottom left in Erase panel. (Note: This procedure will erase the contents of your entire HDD. Be sure you have anything you want saved backed up.Select option to zero all data. Click OK. Click Erase. This process may take a while, so this is a good time to take a walk or call your mother
    d. After HDD is erased resume at No. 7 above.
Post back with any questions or comments.
    Good luck.
