Relational Star Schema with oWB 10g

Hi,
It is an interesting forum. I like to explore the different approached to build ETL using OWB to load Star Schema built around Oracle 10g relational structures.
How do we take advantage of additional features of Oracle DB 10g and OWB 10gR2?
What features does help? Which one should stay away from?
Thanks in advance.

Hi ,
You can use Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler .
SQL Developer Data Modeler provides a full spectrum of data and database modeling tools and utilities, including modeling for Entity Relationship Diagrams (ERD), Relational (database design), Data Type and Multi-dimensional modeling, full forward and reverse engineering and DDL code generation. The Data Modeler imports from and exports to a variety of sources and targets, provides a variety of formatting options and validates the models through a predefined set of design rules.
Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler can connect to any supported Oracle Database and is platform independent

Should I set any java paths or anything.
    Thanks

    Hi
As mentioned by Andreas you must not have the ORACLE_HOME environment variable set when you are doing this work. You also need to make sure that you don't have any Oracle software running, that all services (if on Windows) are shut down, and that you don't have any other environment variables that Oracle would use. Thus you probably shouldn't have CLASSPATH, PERL5LIB or QTJAVA set. What I do is rename these to ORACLE_HOME1, CLASSPATH1, PERL5LIB1 and QTJAVA1.
The final thing I do is to alter my Path to remove all references to existing Oracle software. I save my existing path first though so that I can put it back later (funny how a backup comes in handy at times). Then after the install I look to see what path settings OWB added and I insert these into my original path, reinstating any environment variables that have not been replaced by OWB.
I got to tell you that I find it a pain in the neck that some Oracle software won't install when they detect another Oracle product on the same machine. When you think about it, how head shakingly, frustrating is that in the modern world? Personally I, and my clients, are crying out to see these elementary interactions overcome once and for all.
Things are certainly improving but boy its exasperating when one product interferes with another from the same vendor.
    Does this help?

  • Resolving loops in a star schema with 5 fact tables and 6 dimension tables

    Hello
I have a star schema, ie 5 FACT tables and 7 dimension tables, All fact tables share the same dimension tables, some FACT tables share 3 dimesnsions, while other share 5 dimensions.
I did adopt the best practices, and as recommended in the book, I tried to resolve them using Context, as it is the recommended option to Alias in a star schema setting.  The contexts are resolved, but I still have loops.  I also cleared the Multiple SQL Statement for each context option, but no luck.  I need to get this resoved ASAP

    Hi Patil,
It is not clear what exactly is the problem. As a starting point you could set the context up so that it only covers the joins from fact to dimension.
    Fact A, joins Dim 1, Dim 2, Dim 3, and Dim 4
    Fact B, joins Dim 1, Dim 2, Dim 3, Dim 4 and Dim 5
    Fact C, joins Dim 1, Dim 2, Dim 3, Dim 4 and Dim 6
    Fact D, joins Dim 1, Dim 2, Dim 3, Dim 4 and Dim 7
    Fact E, joins Dim 1, Dim 2, Dim 4 and Dim 6
If each of these are contexts are done and just cover the joins from fact to dim then you should be not get loops.
If you could lay out your joins like above then it may be possible to specify the contexts/aliases that should work.

There is a post on the OWB blog that illustrates how to incorporate CONNECT BY clause into an OWB map, and the create dimension expert on the exchange has 2 versions of a dimension created one as a p/c and the other levelized.

  • Distinctcount across star schema with boolean filter

    Hi,
I have a fact table with CustomerNo, DateKey, ProductKey, SupplierKey, Sales.
This is related to a Calendar table, Product, and Supplier Table.
I'm trying to calculate a distinct count of customer where the sales = 0 and keeping the original filter conditions on related tables.
    I've tried :
    Calculate(Distinctcount(fact[CustomerNo), Fact[Sales]=0)
The figures are wrong.  It's hard for me to evaluate what rows are actually being returned due to the size of the table. I think it may be related to the the DistinctCount running a groupby first and the filter being run second.
    So I tried :
    Calculate(Distinctcount(fact[CustomerNo), Filter(Fact, Fact[Sales]=0))
This returns the same value as the one above.
It's very weird as the slicers on the Pivot do interact with the measure so I know the measures are keeping the existing filter contexts.
    Any ideas what is happening?

well, the formula you provided is correct and should return the correct result
its hard to say why it would return wrong results without knowing/seeing the data
the only thing i could think of is the following:
    a customer made two sales 1) with Sales=123 2) with Sales=0
the formula would of course count that customer as a distinct customer with Sales=0
maybe thats the reason for your "wrong" results?

  • Discoverer with OWB generated EULs

i configure my warehouse star schema using OWB (warehouse builder 9i release 2) and generated the EUL. the were some warnings but they were pointing to some invalid characters in the names of the objects but the import succeeded.
i could see all the imported definition from OWB using Discoverer Admin (also iDS Release 2 - EUL version 5).
    sample of my star schema:-
    fact table
    salesman_id
    product_id
    sales_amt
    dimension
salesman (which also contains salesman name attribute)
product (which also contains product description attribute)
so, i can see the Discoverer joins from the fact to the dimension tables.
when i create a workbook (report) using Discoverer Desktop, i faced the following problems:-
if i just have Salesman (ID or Description) as a row, everything is fine.
if i add in the Product ID, it still works as per normal.
but when i add Product Description into the report, i experienced a weird behaviour. somehow, the Salesman ID field will be automatically filtered to show only a certain number of records in the result (less than what it initially was) !
usually if you put field in the Page Items section you will have to select to view <All> records, right ? citing the scenario i just mentioned above, i will only see some record values ... i won't see the <All> displayed for me to choose.
has this got to do with the foreign key relationship from the Fact table's Product ID field to the Product Dimension table ? it worked for the Salesman dimension !!
the only thing different about the product dimension is the product id field is VARCHAR2 length 18. you could have numeric values like 000000000012345678 (numbers are padded with zeros to make up 18 chars) and alphanumeric values like MAT_TG12345 (which are not padded with anything - left-justified). i could set that the report would only retrieve the records which has product id matching the numeric values !
    any ideas ?
thanks to anyone who is kind enough to read this lengthy post and reply it :)

It would appear that you do not have integrity between the fact and the product dimension.
Does the foriegn key exisit in the database (deployed) or is it only in the OWB repository (not deployed).
    Two thing:-
Try changin the join to an outer join.
Take the sql from the View SQL drop down option and run in another SQL Editor.

  • Understanding Star Schema Operations

    Hi All,
I worked on Oracle Answers and have knowledge on Data Warehousing concepts. I have enough oracle documentation on OLAP, OBIEE, Data Warehousing.
But i 'm not able to understand the star schema concepts in and out. I'm lost on all documents, where i'm getting the simple answer on the following topics:
    1. Is it necessary to create dimensions using CREATE DIMENTION or it can be a simple relational table structure with CREATE TABLE statement?
    2. What will be the steps to create a very basic/simple star schema using DML statements not using any tool?
    3. Where I can get very basic level step by step tutorial to create a very simple star schema by sql -> loading test data by sql commands -> then what queries we can use to get BI reports or using OBIEE to create a simple rpd.
Please give me some idea on this as I have to create a small OBIEE repository where i have to do create the warehouse and ETL process, everything.
    Pls advise.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Sudipta

No my question was on creating the star schema. If i have to create a very simple star schema then can I create the star schema with the following relational tables?
    create table dim_products (
    product_id number primary key,
    product_name varchar2(32),
    brand varchar2(32),
    category_name varchar(32),
    sub_category_name varchar2(32)
    create table dim_time (
    time_id number primary key,
    selling_date date,
    selling_day number(2),
    selling_month varchar2(12),
    selling_Quarter varchar2(6),
    year number(4)
    create table dim_region (
    region_id number primary key,
    store_name varchar2(32),
    city_name varchar2(32),
    state_name varchar2(32),
    country_name varchar2(32),
    region_name varchar2(32)
    create table fact_sales (
    sale_id number primary key,
    region_id number ,
    time_id number ,
    product_id number ,
    unit_sold number,
    constraint fact_sales1 foreign key (region_id) references dim_region (region_id),
    constraint fact_sales2 foreign key (time_id) references dim_time (time_id),
    constraint fact_sales3 foreign key (product_id) references dim_products (product_id)
Or I have to create the DIMENSIONS explicitly, in order to building the hierarchy levels?

  • OWB 10g to 9i compatibility

I have been working with OWB 10g release2. Now we got other project on 9iDS.
Can I use same 10g OWB client to connect to OWB 9i Repository?
I can connect to OWB 9i repository through TOAD.
When I tried to connect through OWB 10g client,
I am getting error API5022:Cannot connect to the repository.
Is such type of downward compatibility permitted?

There are no real problems with running two clients on the same machine, installed in two different homes.
But if you have the chance, you might want to migrate the other project to your OWB version and live happily ever after ... :)

  • Normalized (3NF) VS Denormalized(Star Schema) Data warehouse :

what are the benefits of normalized data warehouse (3NF) over the denormalized (Star schema)?
if DW is in the 3NF then is need to create the seprate physical database which contains several data marts( star schema)with physical tables, which feeds to cube or create the views(SSAS data source view) on top of 3NF warehouse of star schema which feeds to
    cube?
please explin the pros and cons of 3NF and denormalized DW.
    thanks in advance.
    Zaim Raza.

    Hi Zaim,
Take a look to this diagram:
    1) Normally, 3NF schema is typical for ODS layer, which is simply used to fetch data from sources, generalize, prepare, cleanse data for upcoming load to data warehouse.
    2) When it comes to DW layer (Data Warehouse), data modelers general challenge is to build historical data silo.
Star schema with slow changing facts and  slow changing dimensions are partially suitable.
The DataVault and other similar specialized methods provides, in my opinion, wider possibility and flexibility.
    3) Star schema is perfectly suitable for datamarts. SQL Server 2008 and higher contains numerous query analyzer improvements to handle such workload efficiently. SQL Server 2012 introduced column stored indexes, that makes possibility to
create robust star model datamarts with SQL Query performance comparable to MS OLAP.
    So, your choice is:
    1) Create solid, consistent DW solution
    2) Create separate datamarts on top of DW for specific business needs.
    3) Create necessary indexes, PK, FK key and statistics (of FK in fact tables) to help sql optimizer as much as possible.
    4) Forget about approach of defining SSAS datasource view on top of 3NF (or any other DWH modeling method), since this is the way to performance and maintenance issues in the future.

Needless to say that this worked well with OWB 10g R1. Any clue?
    Thanks in advance
    Jörg

    Hello, Jörg
To what database are you trying to deploy your mapping? It seems that db version is pre-9i?
If so, note that CASE statement is unavailable in PL/SQL until Oracle 9i – it’s available only in SQL (in pre-9i Oracle had different code from SQL and PL/SQL interpretation, after 9i it share interpreter code). The compilation error may appear in “ROW-based” parts of package: OWB generates code that calls CASE statement directly in PL/SQL – it cause error.
To avoid deployment error “wrap” this expression component by some operator (order, dedup, join, set). In this case OWB pack expression along with “wrap” operator in SQL statement and package will compile.
Where were discussion here (in forum) about using analytical function in mapping – the same approach works for CASE / DECODE if deploying to pre-9i database.

I am trying to create a star schema using the API HsvStarSchemaACM. But when calling the create function of API, i get the below exception. Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040251 (A general error occurred while trying to obtain a database Reader/Writer lock). Is this something to do with the parameters passed and its connections(connection works fine and createstarschema is running thru workspace).
Any solutions to this is more welcome.
    Thanks,
    Logu

Can you provide details on HsvStarSchemaACM API? How is it related to ODI?
