Relative w/new MacAir (

A relative of mine with a new MacAir (& LIon) sent me a Pages document - but when I went to open it I got a message that said I needed a newer version of Pages in order to view the document!!! What?? Sounds like extortion -- I HAVE to buy a newer version (by upgrading to Lion I guess)? There are so many bugs between Lion and other programs I have I do not want to upgrade! Never once during the sales pitch did anyone mention that there may come a time when the items that were installed on our machine would quit working??  or no longer be "supported" - I am so disappointed.....

Most applications let you save as older versions for compatibility with older software. Of course something may be lost if you have used a newer feature that is not supported in the old version.  I don't have Pages but you may even be able to share documents by both saving them as Word files or whatever.
Uh, computers have been going out of date and replaced by newer since, what, 1950 something?    The same applies to cars (try getting parts for a 30 year old car), television sets (remember the switch to digital broadcasting?), radios (heard on the news that the UK is going completely digital), light bulbs (incadescents probably won't be sold anymore soon)...  Unfortunately Apple does make computers that make us want to keep them a long time, but also its philosophy of staying ahead of the curve means those of us on the back side quickly get ignored.  I was in an Apple Store on Sunday and one of the older sales staff vaguely remembered running Leopard on his first Apple computer many years ago...  I mentioned running Tiger and it was like I had mentioned using a rotary telehone. You can develop survival skills as many of us with older systems that you have managed.

  • We have three computers in the house--2 crashed before I could deauthorize home sharing.  Now, with my new MacAir, the total computers in our household is 3 but home sharing will not allow me to add the other device.

We have three computers in the house (iMac, MacAir and the new MacAir I just received) in addition to 2 iPhones and 2 iPads.  2 Macbook Pros are no longer in use (both crashed before home sharing could be deauthorized) but now I have reached my maximum device allowance (5), even though only 2 computers are currently active.  How can I reset the authorized computer numbers?

You can de-authorize individual computers, but only by using those computers. Otherwise you can "deauthorize all" from your iTunes account.
    Open iTunes on a computer
From the Store menu, select "View my Account..."
Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
Under "Computer Authorizations" select "Deauthorize All".
Authorize each computer you still have, as you may require.
You may only do this once per year.
After you "deauthorize all" your authorized computers, authorize each one as required.

  • I just bought a new macair laptop and it doens't have idvd and I want to make a DVD slideshow with music.  I have an external CD drive. Is there an applicaation that apple has to do this?  IF I buy a used mac, which ones have idvd?

I have a new macair laptop and it does not have idvd. It has a flashdirve instead, so no internal CD drive though I bought an external one. I'm wanted to make a DVD slide show with music and I was told I can't do that in order to play it on a dvd player. Does Mac have an appication to buy that can do the same thing? I thought I saw one for $39.95 but not sure if it will do this. The apple store did not know for sure. Also, if I bought a used mac laptop, which ones will have the idvd installed on it?
    Thanks,
    Phyllis

It is now apparent that iWeb, and iDVD, will no longer be supported by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
Other users have complained to Apple via Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/idvd.html and/or http://www.apple.com/contact/ and have received a boxed copy of iLIfe 11.  Give it a try. In the meantime the following maybe of interest:
iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
All of these issues can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
Apple has announced that iLife is now an unsupported product and those iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the boxed iLife 11 at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought. Personally, if I already didn't have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.

  • Photoshop CS6 - Screen flickering when using brushes with new MacAir 2013

Would the Adobe team please respond to the issues reported by several users:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/5449199
A number of users experience severe screen flicker in Photoshop CS6 when using any of the larger brush type tools (cloning, eraser, brush, spot healing, burning, and dodging).  As many on this thread are experiencing, it is awfull and unusable! The flicker is screen wide black boxes, sometimes the whole screen goes black.  It only seems to happen when we put the cursor over the image to edit.
Hardware:  MacBook Air 13", Haswell 1.7 GHz, 8GB, 512 SSD Software:
    Photoshop CS6 v13.1.2 20130105.r.224, OS X v10.8.4 (and perhaps others)
Looks like a CS6 is not compatible with teh new MacAir. Please look into this and advise.

    An update:
I went to the Apple store and brought myself a more recent MacBook Air (13", 4/256 FYI, they were out of the 8/512 model).    I can't reproduce *exactly* what you're showing, but got the flicker to happen by resizing the cursor.    Also, while painting, the screen seems to stop updating except for the cursor -- not only is Photoshop unable to draw, but other applications stop drawing as well.  And a few times it hasn't even updated the cursor (while all other apps seem frozen).  That's not normal.
When I see the flickering, I frequently see the menubar and other UI elements draw at the wrong location on the LCD, then black, then redraw in the correct location -- repeat in different positions and lots of "static" until I stop changing the cursor.  That's more evidence of a hardware or and odd driver issue.  The odd thing is: it doesn't happen all the time.  It's possible that the one we have at the office also shows the problem, but we didn't test long enough.
I'm trying to reach out to my hardware contacts at Apple - but it's a weekend before a holiday, so we may not make progress immediately.
One thing that would be useful here: the model of MacBook Air that you have that shows (or doesn't show) the problem.

  • Migration Assistant Problem: Old MacBook Pro does not see new MacAir

I have a brand new MacAir (OSX 10.7 and a 4 year old Macbook Pro (OSX 10.6)...trying to use Migration Assistant using Wifi, they're both on my network, but the new MacAir can "see" the old Macbook, but the old Macbook doesn't "see" the new MacAir...the wheel just keeps spinning as it tries to find another computer to migrate to but it just never sees it.  What am I doing wrong or what can I do to fix this problem?  Thanks!

Sounds like there are two issues:
    1.  The Migration should start from the "To" computer asking for the stuff from the "From" computer.  Sounds like you're doing it the other way.
    2.  The MacBook Air isn't visible.  Correct that by going to System Preferences ---> Sharing on your MacBook Air and see if things look good there.  You should at least see a message near the top starting with "Computers on your local network can access your computer ..."

  • I cannot open PDF files on my new MacAir

My new MacAir does not let me open PDF files.  What do I need to do to allow downloads

By default, the Safari browser is enabled to view remote PDF documents by left-clicking the associated document link. The alternative, would be to right click on the remote PDF link, and choose, Download Linked File As… which pops a Save As… dialog. Each of these approaches is exactly how my new MBA worked right out of the box. Your MBA should work this way by default, too.
In Safari Preferences > Security, uncheck Internet plug-ins, Allow Plug-ins. Close preferences. Choose Safari > Reset Safari with the following selected:
Press Reset, and exit Safari. Relaunch Safari, go to Apple’s Manual site, and pick any of these PDF. If PDF viewing is restored, then something that you added as an Internet Plug-in is compromising normal Safari PDF viewing.
Local PDF viewing is accomplished through /Applications/Preview.

Most preferences automatically unlock for the admin user. Were you logged in on a standard or managed account with no rights to change preferences, then the panels would be locked for those users. Security and Accounts remain locked to prevent access when the admin user has left the computer unattended. This prevents any serious security breach.

  • Crashes in Indesign CS5 related to New Pages and Smart Reflow

Anyone else having problems with page related crashes (linked to the LAYOUT ADJUSTMENT.APLN module in ID CS5 on Windows 7 x64, according to the crash report). I get regular crashes when text or table overflows and a new page is created using Smart Reflow, or when manually adding new pages via the New button on the Pages panel. The latter seems to be linked to clicking the new page button repeatedly to create several new pages.
I am working on a document created in CS4, so this might be the cause. I tried to recreate the crash in a new CS5 document, but was not able to, although I could not get Smart Reflow to work either when Limit to Master Text Frames is unchecked.
    J

I have the same, several files created in CS4 (with texts imported from Word). The files crashed in CS4, and CS5. CS4 Windows and Mac, CS5 Windows 7. It definitely has to do with adding pages and overflowing text, exactly as stated. I was not happy to buy from my own money this very expensive software to have it crash 20 times the first day I used it. And at least a 100 times on the third day. That felt like Windows 3.1 to me. You have to know exactly what to do not to let the program crash. I spend 9 hours on figuring out how to get all the hundreds of hours of work back from my crashing Indesign. I managed to get from completely unstable (crash every minute) to workable stable (10-20 crashes a day).  I could now write a manual on workarounds "how not to crash CS5", yet cannot prevent all crashes (yet). Expensive software like this should definitely be better at preventing crashes. I still am sorry I didn't keep to MS Word! It works and crashes less than 5% of the time that Adobe does. Has less features, yet does basic features better (like footnotes, autonumbering etc). I have a very serious deadline and Adobe keeps on crashing.
Oh, and YES of course I export to IDML. Spent more money on OT fonts because I didn't trust my TT fonts.   Googled like a madman for solutions. The went back to Zen and not sleeping just to get my book to the printer.
    Do I sound frustrated? ;-)

  • I have a new MacAir and need to import existing photo albums from my iPhone 4s

I have had my MacAir replaced and now need to get my existing photo albums off my iphone 4s. It allows me to import exising "new" photos from my camera role but these are not what i want. I did a 9 country Europe trip and I don't want to lose them

    Hi foxifoodie,
Unfortunately, those photos live in your iPhoto Library which was on your previous MacBook Air. Did you, by any chance back them up to a disk or flash drive? If not, have you consulted someone at the Apple Genius bar about recovering any of them, or using the Migration Assistant to get them moved over to your new MacBook Air?
I'm not familiar with any way to upload photos (other than the new ones) to your Mac from your iPhone.
IF WE HAVE SOME HEAVY HITTERS OUT THERE THAT KNOW A WAY TO HELP FOXIFOODIE OUT, PLEASE CHIME IN!!!
Otherwise, foxifoodie, I would talk to the Apple folks to see if there is any way to get these back for you!  (Worst case - have them all printed out so you at least have a hard copy! Then, possibly have a good photo service put them on disk for you so you can upload them to your new MacBook Air?
    Good Luck!
    Cheers,

  • New MacAir constantly freezing up

The MacBook Air that I purchased a month ago, freezes up on me constantly. I've researched various forums, and some are stating that this could be due to the system overheating. I really do not believe this is the case with my MacBook Air, as I rarely use it. I only use it for traveling (I write for a living) and every time I use it, it freezes. It is not hot when it freezes.
I could be working on a document or just browsing the Internet and all of a sudden, the cursor and track pad stop working. Sometimes it's ok and when done, I close the lid, or put it in sleep mode. However, when I return to open the system, my track pad, cursor, everything freezes again! I literally have to shut it down with the power key (not even the apple/quit keys work) and reboot the system. Another flaw is that the darn thing will reboot, but I cannot log it (mouse / cursor still don't work). Therefore, it takes bout 4 reboots to engage it again.
I'm at my wits end. I've had this thing to the Apple Store twice and they always say "I've never heard of this happening" and after extensive troubleshooting, I walk away without any resolution. To say that they have never heard of this issue is astounding to me, because the more I research this issue on the Internet, I'm finding more and more complaints.
I will also say that this is my SECOND MacAir in one month. I had the same issue with the first one I purchased (after only one week), and returned it to BestBuy for a brand new replacement. I thought it was a fluke. Guess again ... same issue with this one.
After all these years, I decided to take the plunge and get an Apple, but I must admit, I feel completely burned. $1200.00 for a laptop and I can barely use it. I'm sick over the entire thing. I will never buy another Apple again.
Does anyone have this problem, and if so, do you have any *viable* solutions; I'm not getting any from the "Genius" bar.

This should not be happening, nor have I noticed an abundance of complaints about it here on Apple Support.
Overheating will not cause what you are describing. It's pretty difficult to get a MacBook to overheat to the point its thermal sensors will command a shutdown, but that is what will happen - it will shut down and not freeze in the manner you are describing. Something else is wrong and you should not tolerate it.
Return it and get your money back.

Plug the stick and/or card into the appropriate slots on the side of your Air. Do you see icons for the devices appear on the desktop? Click into them to see what files are there.
