Release Build Issue

Hello!
I'm stuck on something pertaining to my release build. It's not working. I know there could be a lot of reasons for this, most related to path dependencies within my code. In my troubleshooting, however, I've stumbled across an issue that I think is at the root of the problem. I'm hoping someone has a solution!
Here it is:
I'm using Flex Builder 3, and it's an AS3 project. Running the project is no problem. Works great from the bin-debug folder. As soon as I pull the files in the bin-debug folder into another folder, however, it no longer runs. I'm doing this in the most basic way possible. Here are the steps I'm taking:
1. create a new folder at the same level as bin-debug. Calling it, creatively, bin-debug2.
2. copying all the files in bin-debug and pasting them in bin-debug2.
3. opening my browser and surfing to bin-debug/project.html - works perfect.
4. opening my browser and surfing to bin-debug2/project.html - doesn't work.
How is it possible for the exact same files not to work just because the parent folder has a different name?
I believe answering this will solve my release build issues.

Thank you for taking time to help me troubleshoot this.
Running the bin-debug version of the projects main .html page in a browser works. Meaning, the page loads, I see the default background color I've set in the compiler, and the opening animation starts.
Then I copy and paste all of the files in bin-debug to bin-debug2. Try running the exact same .html file. The page opens in the browser and I see the default background color I've set in the compiler. The opening animation never starts.

Issues exist in release build that don't exist in debug build

I've been working on a Flex 4.1 project and have recently noticed an issue that does not exist in the debug build. Then when you export a release build and run it the issue appears. This is the only change that's made that breaks it. To me this seems to be a bug in the player, SDK, or compiler that I might need to post, but I figured I'd submit it here in case I'm missing something.
Basically it seems to be an issue with objects in an ArrayCollection being instantiated as the correct class type before being added.
When in debug mode, if you set a breakpoint to view the objects in the ArrayCollection you will see them appropriately as their Strongly Typed class. However, when the release mode build is run it will throw an RTE on that same line indicating that the ArrayCollection members are ObjectProxy and they can't be cast into their Strongly Typed class.
Here's the RTE that happens and right now I just need to know if I'm missing something, or if this looks like a bug, and to which bugbase it should be posted (Flash Player, Flex SDK, Flex Compiler, etc.)

Thanks for your help and here's an update on this from me. We did try out your suggestion to see if "PlayerPageSummary can be retrieved via getClassAlias". I'm not the one that did the testing, but my teammate who did, said that the class being registered was not the issue.
While he was working on that I further investigated our ANT builder and configuration to see what might have been different between ANT building non-debug SWF and Flash Builder building non-debug SWF. Turns out that my teammate had added some [ArrayElementType] metadata that I was not aware of. Once I realized that, I added it as metadata to be kept in my flex-config.xml which ended up solving the debug vs. release mode issues.
Afterwards, I double-checked the livedocs and also did some Googling. From the above it appears that debug SWF keep all metadata without you needing to explicitly tell it to. On the other hand, outside of a handful of metadata tag such as [Bindable] release builds neeed to be told what to keep.
Does this sound right?
Also, do you know off the top of your head if this is documented by Adobe anywhere and what the link is? I had a real tough time finding anything mentioning how debug SWF retain all metadata.

TFS Build and vNext Release Trigger issue

When the build definition is set to “True” for release – getting the error even though the Release template was linked to the Build definition.
ERROR: No release template matching the current build definition was found to create a release and deployment for.
When flag is reset to false to release - build completes and let the release be created in RM Client and select the latest build.
Another observation, was able to link the same build definition to both "Agent based" and "vNext" releases at the same time.What could be the wrong we are doing?

Release Build Failure - 18meg SWF, Heap Space Issue

I am trying to do a release build on a project that creates an 18 meg debug swf - specifically I am trying to embed a unicode font with asian character ranges (CJK Unified Ideographs).

These are the results -
-Xmx512m (default) I get an error when attempting to build the app
> -Xmx512m the app builds with no error but is Zero KB. Furthermore, this seems to take longer than the default of -Xmx512m, as if it it's trying to complete the task, but it never does, it just produces a 0kb swf, and returns to the first export screen as if i never hit "finish" in the first place
Is there an alternative method to compiling larger applications?

Can you please try downloading Flash Builder 4.7 64 bit from http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashbuilder4-7/
Open FlashBuilder.ini file from the installed directory example (C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash Builder 4.7 (64 Bit)/FlashBuilder) and
if you are on Mac go to /Applications/Adobe Flash Builder 4.7/Adobe Flash Builder 4.7.app/Contents/MacOS and set your -Xmx to 1024 and try packaging. If this doesn't solve increase you -Xmx to 2048.

Issues about export to release build

I use flex to develop a flex viewer (ESRI's product) project. After it is done and run, I need to export to release build into “bin-release” folder. But some image files are missing inside the folder. The whole application works fine, just pictures do not show up in bin-release folder. Does anyone have any solution or explanations for this?
Adobe technical support lets me change workspace or check the Project—Build Automatically, but they don’t work. Thanks a lot!

I thought adobe elearning means it includes Adobe flah builder also.. and also I thought its a generic dicussion.
And there is no Abode Flash builder forum also in the adobe site.
So if possible please let me know where I should post this.

I have a production mobile Flex app that uses RemoteObject calls for all data access, and it's working well, except for a new remote call I just added that only fails when running with a release build. The same call works fine when running on the device

I have a production mobile Flex app that uses RemoteObject calls for all data access, and it's working well, except for a new remote call I just added that only fails when running with a release build. The same call works fine when running on the device (iPhone) using debug build. When running with a release build, the result handler is never called (nor is the fault handler called). Viewing the BlazeDS logs in debug mode, the call is received and send back with data. I've narrowed it down to what seems to be a data size issue.
I have targeted one specific data call that returns in the String value a string length of 44kb, which fails in the release build (result or fault handler never called), but the result handler is called as expected in debug build. When I do not populate the String value (in server side Java code) on the object (just set it empty string), the result handler is then called, and the object is returned (release build).
The custom object being returned in the call is a very a simple object, with getters/setters for simple types boolean, int, String, and one org.23c.dom.Document type. This same object type is used on other other RemoteObject calls (different data) and works fine (release and debug builds). I originally was returning as a Document, but, just to make sure this wasn't the problem, changed the value to be returned to a String, just to rule out XML/Dom issues in serialization.
I don't understand 1) why the release build vs. debug build behavior is different for a RemoteObject call, 2) why the calls work in debug build when sending over a somewhat large (but, not unreasonable) amount of data in a String object, but not in release build.
I have't tried to find out exactly where the failure point in size is, but, not sure that's even relevant, since 44kb isn't an unreasonable size to expect.
By turning on the Debug mode in BlazeDS, I can see the object and it's attributes being serialized and everything looks good there. The calls are received and processed appropriately in BlazeDS for both debug and release build testing.
Anyone have an idea on other things to try to debug/resolve this?
Platform testing is BlazeDS 4, Flashbuilder 4.7, Websphere 8 server, iPhone (iOS 7.1.2). Tried using multiple Flex SDK's 4.12 to the latest 4.13, with no change in behavior.

After a week's worth of debugging, I found the issue.
The Java type returned from the call was defined as ArrayList. Changing it to List resolved the problem.
I'm not sure why ArrayList isn't a valid return type, I've been looking at the Adobe docs, and still can't see why this isn't valid. And, why it works in Debug mode and not in Release build is even stranger. Maybe someone can shed some light on the logic here to me.

Not using the most recent checked in version of the web app DLL in Release build

Got some peculiar behaviour - I have three build configurations set up within VS2K13 for Debug, Release and DebugOnLive.
There are some basic XML transformations to update emails, db-settings etc - all very simple and working.
Needed to do a DebugOnLive build to test an emergency fix and everything built fine. Tested on the pilot site, saw the fix was working and proceeded to rebuild for Release.
Everything seemed great except the web-app DLL with the fix in that was used for the release build was not the latest version even though the pilot build had used the latest version. I had to recheck in the DLL to get it to use the updated version!
Is this behaviour 'by design' - it seems peculiar you would have to re-check in to change the build if all you are doing is swapping some settings? You are fixed - all you are doing is building for a different configuration or am I misunderstanding?

You’re using the default build process template in your build definition? You configured these 3 configurations in your build definition to build your solution 3 times?
If you remove that DebugForLive configuration, only configure Debug and Release in your solution and build definition to perform build, everything will works fine?
After you changed the configuration from “DebugForLive” to Release, please check in on your solution first, then queue build definition to build your solution. After you changed the configuration each time, please check-in on your solution first,
then perform build.

Drag and drop does not work in Exported release build

I am using the built in DragManager class to handle some drag and drop functionality in an application. When running from flex builder, It runs exactly as expected, but when I export the project to a release build, Dragging only works in the vertical direction. How is this possible? What might be causing such strange behavior.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Sorry, I will try to be more clear. I am using drag and drop simply to move items around on a Canvas. This works perfectly when running from flex builder, but when i export a release build it starts behaving strangely.
I can drag items up or down on the canvas no problem, but as soon as I try to drag items left or right, there is no response. On a windows machine, it gives me the black circle with a slash through it icon, implying that the drag is not accepted. On Mac, there is no icon, it simply will not drag.
Hope that clarifies it, I could really use some help figuring this issue out.
Update:
I can confirm that the call to DragManager.acceptDragDrop is being reached in both cases, but the DragEvent.DRAG_DROP event is not being handled in the release build, (it is reached when run from flex builder)

Bug in flash builder 4? ( export air release build )

Hi every one, I am working on a air application using flash builder 4. I tried to export an air release build and I chose my certificate and every thing seemed to be fine, but whrn I clicked on finish button, nothing happend!! I mean it did not do anything, no error message, nothing. after a lot of time I found out on of my images in assets folder starts with space. that was it!! flex 4 could not export the release build for that reason !!just make sure your file names do not start with space!!
Anyways I thought to post it here maybe it saves some time for someone.

I had the same issue trying to export an air project:
Start to export the release then nothing append, no .air file generated, and the compiler asking me again and again to choose files to be exported.
The issue came from project-app.xml file containing leading space within tags.
For instance <systemChrome> none </systemChrome> must be change to <systemChrome>none</systemChrome>. (Note the spaces around "none").
The workspace log file might help in case of silent failure. flexWorkspace/.metedata/.log.

FB4: Release build fails with RSLs using FlexSDK 3.5

Flash Builder 4 (v 4.0.1.277662) fails, when trying to do a release build with the following simple project setup:
- Flash library project with a simple test class (using the 3.5 Flex SDK which ships with FB4)
- Flex project with simple mxml-application (using the same SDK)
The Library is linked as RSL
When you try to export the release build of the project, you´ll get an unspecified error.
In the log file, you can found:
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: flex2/tools/oem/OEMException$CircularLibraryDependencyException
With some google search, I found out, that the error occured with FB 4 beta und should be already fixed.
That´s for sure true with SDK 4.0 oder SDK 4.1, but not SDK 3.5 (remember: it´s the version, which ships with the FB itself !!!).
After scanning the jar´s of the SDK 3.5 and 4.0, I found out, that the following 3 files are missing in the flex-compiler-oem.jar in SDK 3.5:
- OEMException$CircularLibraryDependencyException.class
- OEMException.class
- OEMException_en.properties
Adding these files to the jar of the 3.5 SDK, the release build will be successfully exported.
We were absolutely disappointed after realizing this issue. This has cost a lot of working time and was frustrating too.
Is there another way to get this working, without changing the SDK files?

Not sure of any workarounds apart from one what you have already tried, but can you file a Flex SDK bug for this to be fixed in the current version.

Export release build failed with an error message: complilation failed while excuting : compile-abc

I updated air sdk from 4.0 to 16.0 beta to fix apple app store submitting bug. I can build the project and run it on simulator without any problem. But when I tried to export the ios release build, I got this error message: complilation failed while excuting : compile-abc.
I use commmand line to excute compile-abc.exe with the parameters that adt gives it, but it failed without any error message.
Here is the command line:

There's a empty file AOTBuildOutput-0000001821_1821.o left in the command line workaroud path. I opened file AOTBuildOutput-0000001821.abc, but didn't get any clue. How can I trace this problem?

Flash Builder + WTP = "Export Release Build" Broken

If I create a combined Flex/Java project and then click the "Export Release Build..." menu, then nothing appears to happen. If I just create a plain Flex project, then it works just fine.
I used the Eclipse Plug-in installer 4.0.1 (build 277662) for Windows XP SP3.
I am running the bundled 3.4.2 version of Eclpse and installed Subclipse and the WTP plugin.
I eventually looked through the Eclipse workspace log file and found the following stack trace. If anyone can offer me any suggestions on how to get this working I would appreciate it.

I was able to reproduce this issue with Eclipse 3.6 and burrito build.
When I create a flex/java project I am not able to export the release build and the null pointer exception occurs.
But when I create the flex/java project with remote object service as LCDS export worked fine.
Also export of normal project is worked fine. I raised a bug http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FB-29046 for the same

Export Release Build on Flash Builder 4 Beta 2

Hi Everyone,
I have a Flex 4 project that is organized as a main app project with several related projects that are linked in, along with several libraries that get included (I use granite dataservice and tweener, among others). The project runs fine when I do a normal build, I have deployed the resulting swf independently on a web server and its working fine.
Now, whenever I try to do 'Export release build' from the Project menu, the resulting release build doesnt run at all, and it crashes with weird errors, like for example, it first crashes because of a null reference in the partAdded method in one of the components I created, when I removed that component completely it crashed because of a type coercion error on one of the data service objects, and this goes on with all sorts of errors that never existed in the normal 'debug' version not built with the export option.
So I have two questions:
Does anyone have any clue what might be wrong? I would have posted examples but it looks to me like an application-wide anomaly, maybe because of it not loading the libraries or the resources correctly? I tried both build path options or merging sdk libraries into the code or using runtime libraries, didnt work, not sure if it is related.
What exactly does 'Export release build' add for me? is the release build faster than the normal one?

Hi,
A release build optimises the compile,(no debugging code etc). The swf will be a little quicker and a lot smaller. If you are getting null pointers and data service issues maybe something in your create order is a bit out. If you have an idea of what the offending component may be see if you can set its creation policy. This would be my first thought the other could possibly be some sort of local versus network issue on the release build.

Flash Builder Export Release Build Fails

I'm having an issue when trying to export the release build of my AIR application in Flash Builder 4.5. After choosing the key to sign the package and clicking finish to complete the export, it errors saying that "Error occurred while saving the project settings: "default" build target cannot be found for the selected project." I've included the error message output to the log in the .metadata folder. Any help would be great as this is baffling to me.

Take a look at .actionScriptProperties file, there is <buildTargets/> tag. Ideally it should look something similar to

Changing this when FB is open wouldn't help. You would need update the file, while project is closed or flash builder is closed.

Flash Builder 4 for Mac: Unable to export a release build

I've been unable to export release builds of any AIR projects when using a Mac installation of Flash Builder 4. I can run the AIR apps within the IDE, but I keep getting the following error when exporting: "One or more errors were found while trying to build the release version. Unable to export."
The weird thing is that I can export the exact same AIR projects using my Windows 7 copy of FB4 just fine, without any errors.
Details of the Mac installation:
OSX 10.5.8
Flash Builder 4 plug-in version, v4.0.1, on Eclipse v3.4.2
I performed a fresh install of FB4 today (before anyone suggests it ) but to no avail.

I had already seen that post, and the answers were not applicable to me. But thankfully I have found the solution now!
I Googled the error message: "org.apache.xerces.dom.DeferredElementImpl.getTextContent()Ljava/lang/ String", and came across the following bug report:
http://code.google.com/p/alkwarel/issues/detail?id=10
As suggested in the link above, I deleted the xerces.jar located in user.home/Library/Java/Extensions/. I then cleaned my project, and FB4 for Mac finally exported the release build!
That bug has been annoying me for MONTHS. I'm so happy it's fixed now!
