Release Management for Visual Studio & Windows Forms Projects

Is Microsoft's new Release Management (RM) tool a viable option for Windows Forms applications that utilize ClickOnce for installation?
It seems all of the examples I have seen for RM center around web based applications.  I intend to have TFS build the application, RM pick up the bits from a drop location and create 5 unique ClickOnce installers (using PowerShell & Mage.exe). Initially,
each of the 5 unique ClickOnce installers would differ only in app.config files.  I though RM would be a nice fit since I can let it handle customizing the app.config for each of the 5 installers.

Hi BWKDev,
Thanks for your post.
If you can deploy your project using PowerShell script, I think
you can create the release template to copy your build output(include deploy PS script file) to deployment agent machine, and execute the deploy PS script using PS script execute component to deploy your project.

    Hi All,
    I need some guidance on executing\ calling a batch script from Release Management for Visual Studio 2013 as one of the activity during release and also let me know whether the tool provides the log of this kind of execution.
    Thanks in Advance,

    Hi Manoj,
    To run batch script during release process when use Release Management for Visual Studio Online, you can use Command Line Runner" tool which allow user to run comtom command line. You can check in by clicking Inventory tab then tools in Release Management
    client. You can check this
    page for more information about release manage tools to deploy an app. Thanks for your understanding.

  • Download a Project file for Visual Studio regarding the Kinect for Windows v2? Getting Started with Kinect Development in Visual Studio

    I am currently trying to make an application for Kinect for Windows v2 but I am entirely new to Visual Studio and Kinect development and could use some help getting started. I honestly have no idea where or how to start and I figured the easiest thing would
    be to obtain a simple project file and examine how it works myself, but I have been unable to find one. The easiest thing would be if I could obtain a project file for Visual Studio that is an application which overlays the Skeletal model over people in real
    time, though similar project files would also be appreciated. The app I am making largely involves things similar to overlaying the skeletal model on bodies so this would get me off to a great start and show me how the code is laid out within visual studio
    simultaneously. (I would prefer the code to be in C# if that is possible but other languages also work).
    I have checked out some of the guides for kinect development but they all assume you know how visual studio works so I cannot get very far in them. Thus if you know of a good guide to get me started with visual stuido AND the Kinect then I would be glad
    to here that as well.
    Alternatively, and I know this is not the right place for this, I have Matlab, which I know works for the Kinect v1 but can't find support for it regarding the v2, so if you could point me in the right direction on how to get it to work with the Kinect v2
    THAT would also work incredibly well as I am much more familiar with Matlab.
    I already have Visual Studio Ultimate 2013 installed, as well as the Kinect SDKv2.0, the physical Kinect for Windows v2, and my laptop meets all of the requirements for development so those are not issues.
    Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me!

    Hi Jicnon,
    Thank you for posting in MSND forum.
    Since this forum is discuss: Visual Studio WPF/SL Designer, Visual Studio Guidance Automation Toolkit, Developer Documentation and Help System, and Visual Studio Editor. About your issue, I think that it is
    more related to the Kinect for Windows v2, so I suggest you can post this issue directly to Kinect for Windows v2 SDK forum:https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=kinectv2sdk
    ,maybe you will get better support.
    In addition, I find a similar thread about your issue, maybe you will get some useful message.

  • Blend for Visual Studio's HTML/CSS WYSIWYG editor only usable for Windows 8 apps, NOT for web apps?

    Hi there,
    In the process of learning Visual Studio (VS) and ASP.NET, I initially thought that I could use Blend for VS's seemingly great HTML/CSS WYSIWYG editor to visually design the HTML pages and CSS for a web app developped with VS, whether it be with ASP.NET MVC
    or Django (using Python Tools for Visual Studio).
    But now it dawned on me that Blend for VS seems to only be meant to design HTML/CSS for native Windows
    8 apps, and not
    web apps.
    Can someone confirm that this is indeed the case?
    Thanks a lot in advance for clarifying this point for me.
    PS: Maybe this a dumb newbie question, but from the outside, it seems rather counter-intuitive to offer a top-notch tool for web
    standards (HTML/CSS) edition (Blend for VS), all integrated with a top-notch tool for web development (VS) but prohibiting the web developer community to leverage the productivity gains of both
    the former and the integration. This is especially puzzling given that the latest components of the ASP framework (MVC, SPA projects):
    - Pushes for reliance on HTML elements and CSS instead of ASP elements and Skin files;
    - VS apparently also does not provide a visual design page view for ASP.MVC projects, which is sure to make many development teams wary of migrating from web forms to MVC.

    I believe this the case, but I'm not familiar with asp.net development. As you point out: html is html so you can edit and copy the code. That said, the Windows Store apps forums are specifically about writing Windows Store apps. For discussion
    of writing ASp.net apps and the best tools to use for that please post in the asp.net development forums on

  • Microsoft Office Developer Tools for Visual Studio 2013 on Windows 10 Technical Preview

    Hi, I've never developed a plugin for Office before. I've downloaded the technical preview of Windows 10 and have it running via Boot Camp on my MacBook (Looks good! I'll buy it when it comes out). Obviously with this being in beta it's understandable that
    there are problems, so this is just a heads up on one particular problem. Maybe there's already a solution or workaround?
    I've downloaded Visual Studio 2013 Community Edition, brought a copy of Microsoft Office Home And Student 2013 and am currently in the process of installing Microsoft Office Developer Tools for Visual Studio 2013.
    The only problem though is that when I try to install it I get the following message:
    http://s22.postimg.org/dxh1gtra9/Install_Problem_Office_Plugin_Tools.png
    Here is the log:
    http://pastebin.com/7wWkSfjF
    I also tried to download the file directly and run that.
    http://s3.postimg.org/tj9vb660j/Install_Problem_Office_Plugin_Tools2.png
    I right clicked on the file and noticed an options called "Troubleshoot Compatibility". There was a wizard, and I ran through the wizard a number of times through different routes but none of them worked. I was unable to find the option which turned
    off compatibility mode. I then searched for answers online which told me to do some things in the regedit program but that didn't seem to solve the problem.
    Anyway, I understand that this is a beta version of Windows 10 and that there are going to be problems but thought it would be best to let you know. Perhaps I should just bite the bullet and buy Windows 8.
    Many thanks,
    Lawrence

  • Cancelled my Windows Azure Benefit for Visual Studio Premium with MSDN by mistake, and now?

    Hello
    I have mistakenly cancelled my Windows Azure Benefit for Visual Studio Premium with MSDN subscription a couple of months ago not knowing what I was basically cancelling. Today I wanted to start playing around with Windows Azure when I figured this out.
    I still have a valid MSDN Premium Subscription and now when I click the link to Activate Windows Azure from the MSDN Benefits page I have to create a new subscription named "Visual Studio Premium with MSDN" and on the bottom of the page I see "Windows
    Azure MSDN - Visual Studio Premium".
    I the "Visual Studio Premium with MSDN" the one that I get with my MSDN subscription? I guess that the "Windows Azure MSDN - Visual Studio Premium" has been renamed.
    All I see is that my "Visual Studio Premium with MSDN" has a spending limit of "75 euro" / month. This is all so confusing...

  • WPF 4.5 doesn't show the option to open the project in Blend for Visual Studio 2013

    Hi,
    In my WPF 4.5 project in Visual Studio 2013, when I right clicked the name of my project it doesn’t show the option to open in Blend for Visual Studio 2013….. and when I try to open the project with Blend for Visual Studio 2013, it doesn't show anything.....
    I don't see the project nor the UI of my WPF 4.5 project
    How I can open my project in Blend for Visual Studio 2013???
    Thanks!!!
    Regards,

    Hi Jaquense,
    open Blend. Open Project/Solution and select the .sln-file of the project you've created in visual Studio. That's it. In the Project Explorer in Blend you should see your files and you should be able to open up your XAML-files.

  • Why do I get a MissingManifestResourceException when I try to use an MFC Control Wrapper in a Windows Forms Project with Measurement Studio 7.0?

    I can use the .NET Windows Forms Controls without problems, but when I try to add an MFC control, everything appears to work fine until runtime. The program throws the aforementioned exception claiming that the resources haven't been added to the compiled project. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
    Victor

    That is correct that you will need to create an interop wrapper for the 3D graph ActiveX control if you want to use the 3D graph in a Windows Forms project. However, data types like CNiReal64Vector are only in the C++ interfaces and are not in the ActiveX interface, hence you can use normal .NET data types and will not need to create the C++ data types. The interop wrapper will convert the .NET data types to the expected ActiveX data types and will pass those data types on to the ActiveX control. For example, here is a C# example that demonstrates how to plot a dual sine surface on the interop wrapper of the 3D graph:
    const int size = 40;
    double[] xData = new double[size];
    double[] yData = new double[size];
    double[,] z
    Data = new double[size, size];
    for (int i = 0; i < size; ++i)
    xData[i] = yData[i] = ((i - 20.0) / 20.0) * Math.PI;
    for (int i = 0; i < size; ++i)
    for (int j = 0; j < size; ++j)
    zData[j, i] = Math.Sin(xData[i]) * Math.Cos(yData[j]) + 2.0;
    graph3D.Plot3DSurface(xData, yData, zData, Type.Missing);

    Hello,
    You can find all of the info for CR for VS 2010 here: http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/boc/crystalreports-dotnet
    Including the deployment packages etc., distributing the runtime manually is not supported nor has anyone that I know of ever done it successfully.
    Make sure you use the Full Framework when building your project and set your project for X86 or x64 only and not the default AnyCPU.
    You can use CR with 2.0 framework, actually it still has a dependency on 2.0 framework.
    Microsoft doesn't support it as they did in previous versions of VS .NET because it's not installed with VS now. It's fully support by SAP now.

  • Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010 runtime LICENCE

    I want to welcome everyone. It's my first post on this forum.
    I want to provide my Windows Form application to a client. This application was written in VS 2010 and it uses SAP Crystal Reports for generating simple report.
    I've read [Crystal Reports Licensing Explained|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/boc/index?rid=/library/uuid/10cd9e15-120d-2c10-3fb5-be299000b6b7&utm_source=crvs2010&utm_medium=lp&utm_campaign=licensing_explained] pdf and I've learnt that in my case redistribution of software that embeds the Crystal Reports runtime engine is free.
    My question is:
    Is there something else I must include in my application package for instance a licence file? Or maybe I just have to include SAP CR runtime or ask user to download it from the SAP web site and that's it?
    Marcin

    Hello Marcin,
    Welcome.
    Please note that whenever you distribute your application (which uses Crystal reports) to others who may not have Crystal designer product, you need to provide the runtimes along with the application. The runtimes provide the necessary dlls in the machine for running Crystal inside the app.
    You can use an exe to install the CR runtimes and then deploy your app. OR you can include the msm files and create a deployment package.
    You will get the runtimes for CR4VS2010 [here|/people/coy.yonce/blog/2010/11/12/crystal-reports-for-visual-studio-2010-production-release-now-availableCystlR%2528SAPWeblogs%253ACrystal+Reports%2529].

    Dear Sir,
    I am using Visual Studio 2005 and crystal reports for visual studio 2005 and sql server 2000.
    When I am running the project from my pc where it was developed and a local server with server authentication, report is opening but from client machine there is a new screen come before opening the report asking for login issue. my reports has subreports
    also.
    I am using dsn file to connect with server from crystal reports where dsn file contains as follows:

    UID=sa
    PWD=sa
    DATABASE=HRISDB
    WSID=S-AGD-PAY01\HRSERVER
    APP=Microsoft Data Access Components
    SERVER=S-AGD-PAY01\HRSERVER
    so it is dynamic bcoz i need change server name sometimes.  my question is when same report want show user from their pc then below screen appears:

    Please help me how can I overcome it.
    It is mentionable that I didn't use any dblogin method in my code to like setdbloginforReport(). I think there is no problem bcoz the report show correctly. Just want to know how to overcome this screen.

  • How to deal with .csproj.user being created/modified by Visual Studio before the project is run?

    So, what is the problem?
    The problem is that Visual Studio considers .csproj.user a dependency of the project being run.
    Let us assume the following:
     - We have a freshly built solution containing a web application project `X` as the Start Up project.
     - There are Silverlight applications served by the X web application.
     - There is no `X.csproj.user` file initially.
    Now consider the following flow of events:
     1. Open the solution in the Visual Studio
     2. Build.
     3. Run.
     4. A dialog is open to ask whether Silverlight debugging is to be enabled. Enable it.
     5. Stop the debugging session.
     6. Run again.
     7. Stop the debugging session.
     8. Run again.
    Assuming nothing is built at step 2 (because the solution is totally up to date), will there anything be built at steps 3 and 6?
    The answer is affirmative and here is why:
     - The X.csproj.user file is actually created by Visual Studio when the project is requested to run. What happens next is that the
    X.csproj.user file is considered a dependency of the project
    X by the Visual Studio. Being created just now the file is newer than the project binaries and so Visual Studio builds the project
    X. This explains why the project is built at step 3.
     - When we agree to enable Silverlight debugging Visual Studio records this agreement in the
    X.csproj.user file. So the file is modified again, after the project has started running. Restarting the debugging session is going to build the project
    X yet again, after all X.csproj.user is again newer than the binaries built a second ago. This explains why the project is built at step 6.
    Fortunately, nothing is built at step 8.
    Call me petty, but I want to avoid the builds at steps 3 and 6. The problem is that I am not allowed to check in the X.csproj.user file, because that is likely to create a mess with people accidentally checking in their private changes.
    On the other hand, I am unable to move its default content (along with the agreement to enable Silverlight debugging) into the project file
    X.csproj. Well, I can, but it is just being ignored.
    So, here is my question - is it possible to separate the content stored in a
    .csproj.user into two groups:
     - Permanent. These are the things I would love to have in the .csproj file. It will be checked in.
     - Temporary/Private. These are the things private to individual developers. Never checked in.
    Visual Studio already allows this separation for certain properties - see the
    Apply server settings to all users (store in project file) checkbox in the Web properties tab of a Web application project - http://olalalittlen.wordpress.com/2011/07/20/vs-tips-managing-server-settings-in-web-projects-for-multi-developer-scenarios/.
    However, it is insufficient.
    Any other ideas on how to prevent the aforementioned redundant builds are welcome too.

    Hi Mark,
    I think your issue is more about project itself. the saved information in the .csproj.user settings is about the project's information.
    So I suggest you post your issue to the related project forum.

  • Image Quality In Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010

    I am using the new production release of Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010 and I am having an issue with image quality when adding an image to a crystal report.
    The image itself is a .TIF file,  and when opened in Windows, the quality of the image, which is mostly text, is very high. The image was created from a electronic PDF form and I intend to use this as a background for the crystal report, over which I will place data fields.
    As soon as the image is added to the report you can see the degradation in quality in the design window and in the preview window within visual studio. The quality remains low when viewing the report in the WPF report viewer and when printing from this control.
    I have ensured the "Retain Original Image Color Depth" option is checked but this has made no difference (the image is black and white anyway).
    The image in the report has been left at its native size, no resizing at all. The image is 355KB in size if that's relevant.
    Is there a reason the image looses quality when added to a report? Is it being compressed? More importantly, is there a way to make the image retain its native quality when adding it to a crystal report?
    Thanks in advance.

    The following image is the image I am trying to display. Although imageshack has converted it to a png, if you right click and save the image you can open it and zoom in with little image degradation.

    The following is a screen shot of how the tif file looks in the designer when zooming in:

    The second image has lost its clarity and is unusable when printing.
    I hope this helps.

  • Deploying Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio 2008

    I have Windows Forms project using Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio 2008
    I can't find the merge module to include in the setup project like I used to do in Visual Studio .NET 2003
    Everyone seems to say that they don't exist for that version of Crystal Reports
    After searching for a long time I found something about a package located at
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\Bootstrapper\Packages\CrystalReports10_5\CRRedist2008_x86.msi
    Tried it and it seems to work.
    Do I have to install this to the client computer ? Is that the only way having a "Crystal Reports Basic Runtime for Visual Studio 2008" in the program list of the client computer ?
