Remote another MAc via Internet

Not sure if this is possible or not. I would really like the ability to remote my parents new iMac to help support their transition from a PC to a Mac. I have a MP running Leopard and they have a new iMac running Leopard as well. Can I connect to their iMac and help troubleshoot/support?
Thanks

Get them a copy of David Pogue's "Missing Manual" which does an excellent job of walking through program and setup. My brother really liked it - and he's used computers all his life. The book "Switching" wasn't very useful though.
Apple Mac 101 Help is there online as well as the Help menu to guide them and find help on doing tasks, like configuring Image Capture, installing drivers for printers. Any place there is the icon "?" in blue, that brings up a help screen.
I find Vista's built in help to be the best I have ever seen, though.

  • Access files on mac via internet from winXP

I set up a mac in the office as a file server. I have the public folder defined to be accessible via afp and smb.
When I access it from home with my mac via "connect to server" and put in the servername.com which I defined with no-ip.com it works just fine. Also my filemaker databases and everything.
However if I try to connect with a windowsxp machine I cannot get it to work. I tried
afp://servername.com and smb://servername.com and smb\\servername.com to no avail.
Any suggestions how this should work?

than you. I wasn't sure what forum to post in. Since I am looking for a remote solution, and possibly apple remote desktop that offers hard drive access only, I thought this could be the appropiate forum. I wasn't sure if remote desktop (apple) offers access to the hard drive to hard drive solution without being forced or required to use the screen sharing/control feature. At any rate, thank you. i am not sure I am going to be able to fins asolution. I was thinking someone might tell me something about SSH, and maybe a third party app to use for dynamic DNS and an option to avoid port forwarding etc. Thank you for your time.

  • Sharing Internet with another Mac via Bluetooth

I'm trying to help my wireless-less iMac G5 get online. It sits about two inches away from a MacBook Pro on my desk, which connects to the household wireless network via the in-built AirPort card. I'm hoping I can share that AirPort connection via Bluetooth.
Both systems are running Leopard, although the G5 is running a vanilla 10.5.0 install since I can't update without an Internet connection. The MacBook Pro is up-to-date and then some.
On the MacBook Pro, under System Preferences -> Bluetooth -> Advanced, I've checked "Share my Internet connection with other Bluetooth devices." Under Sharing, I've turned on Internet Sharing from AirPort to Bluetooth PAN. I've also paired the devices together.
I'm trying to connect from the iMac G5 to the MacBook Pro with "Connect to Network" in the Bluetooth menu. However, it's grayed out. If I do the same from the gear menu in System Preferences -> Bluetooth, nothing occurs.
This seems like a pretty complicated process for a technology that's meant to make networking child's play.

You're making life very complicated for yourself!
    1) Bluetooth is far too slow for sharing an internet connection, unless you like accessing the internet at dial-up speeds or less.
    2) As the computers are so close, just run an Ethernet or Firewire cable between the two to create a network, and share the internet connection over Ethernet or Firewire.
    3) You can easily update the G5 to the latest Leopard by downloading the standalone updater on the internet connected Mac from the Apple web-site, then just copy the Update to the G5 via CD, DVD, USB Disk, Firewire Cable, Ethernet Cable, external hard disk etc...

  • Remotely control mac to another mac over internet / ML 10.8.2

Help please!! I am in Hong Kong and want to be able to remotely control my fathers mac that is in the UK. I want to be able to take FULL control of his mac from mine. Both using Mountain lion. Can this done? What are the EXACT steps required to make this happen for both macs please?

The easiest way is of both of you are using Messages. If so you can share the screen of your fathers Mac and you will have access to the computer as if you ere logged in to it.
If you look in Messages->Video make sure Screen Sharing Enabled is checked on both computers. Then once you have a chat session going with your father select Messages->Ask to Share <fathers message name> Screen… and you father will select Messages->Share My Screen with <your message name>
You can look in the Messages help file for complete description of this.

  • How to connect with another Mac via AFP

My parents have a Mac (10.4.8) which is in a different location than my own. They would like to send me some files however, I thought it would be easier if I could just log into their computer from mine, and grab the files myself.
How is this done, if at all? I have the AFP address of their computer (file sharing is on as is Apple Talk on both machines) but can't seem to get this to work by using the connect to server command?
    Any help much appreciated!

If you have broadband internet then why not send the files via email. Quick, simple.
If your computers can be connected via Ethernet or wireless, then you can use file sharing. However, you must be able to communicate directly. That means connecting an Ethernet cable between the two computers or being able to communicate wirelessly - wireless modem, Ethernet modem connected to a wireless router, and Airport cards in both computers. • Best way to connect to another computer via Internet

    Hello,
I would like to be able to help my students from time to time remotely, that is, by accessing their computer via the Internet so I could make some demos whether on my own screen our theirs.I know that we can do this at school via Apple Remote Desktop. I read a few post on Apple's Forum's Web Site saying that it was quite simple to do but there where many conditions required.
A simple way is neede here since I'm will be talking mostly at starters on the mac and maybe some will be on a PC.
I will need to give them simple instructions to connect easally.
I am not that familiar with "File Sharing", I know the option is there in my Mac. But I'm not sure all of my students will be on the same network and maybe some will be on PC also?
Do I really need Apple Remote Desktop, some other software or via a Web site such as "logmein.com" or others?
Thank you for answering and looking forward to read you,

    HI,
Thank's for answering. I've cheked the product and it seem's quite simple effectively. I even talk to a person on the phone who explained to me what where the possibilities. It seem's like if I want to show how I do something on my Mac to one of my student the student need then to also download the software. As soon as I told the ladie it was between my students and I, the sofware is no longer free (30$ a month?...). So I guess I would have to be cautious about using that product free of charge with my students, as long as I do a "Pear To Pear" connection...
Are there other Internet Services such as this one?
    Thank you for answering,
    Robert Marchand

  • Sharing files with another mac over internet

    Hi there,
My friend has a mac with tiger. I have a mac with tiger. We have built in ftp servers, correct? How exactly do we connect with each other over the internet to share large files? I know the answer is simple or at least available. Thanks for your time.
    rwa

One of the most secure way to share files over the internet is to use an sftp server.
Goto your system preferences-->sharing-->turn on remote login.
Then on your router's or firewalls port forward tcp port 22 to your mac. Then you can log into each others mac using an SFTP client such as transmit or cyberduck.

  • Trojans on Macs via Internet links possible?

    Hi,
Still a bit new to Macs and so far they've been excellent. No crashes. But I'm wondering if it's possible to have installed a trojan (such as spyware or keylogger, etc.) by clicking on an internet link. A poster on a discussion forum where the link was located, said it had a trojan_exploit attached - and I don't know if that poster is a windows user or a mac user..
So, has anyone heard of Intel Macs being infected with malware/spyware like this and thus having their personal info, location, etc. made vulnerable? And if so, how would one find and remove it? I have ClamX but it doesn't scan the entire hard drive at once so it seems kind of difficult to know where to start.
    Thanks.

    Hi, Cowfreek.
AFAIK, the "drive by" type of infection you describe has not been seen for Macs to-date. However, that's not to say people aren't trying to be the first to develop a major Trojan or virus for Mac OS X.
See my "Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware" FAQ for my recommendations as well as a list of some recent Mac OS X security threats that have emerged, including Trojans, rootkits, and spyware. The FAQ also addresses some of the usual arguments against installing an anti-virus solution on a Mac that often arise in discussions of this topic.
While some believe that anti-virus solutions are not required on a Mac, I feel that's ignoring the fact that threats are emerging and that security exposures continue to be found, albeit eventually closed, in Mac OS X, as in any other operating system. Even Apple now recommends that one should "check for viruses."
    Good luck!

  • How i can Remote another Mac in a foreign Country using ARD

    +"Other iMac have Dynamic IP"+
Dynamic IP means the IP address is likely to change. If the IP address you think the Remote Mac is using is not working then that's probably the reason why you can't connect. Find out what the external IP address is in use at the remote mac's site and it should work. Bear in mind it will probably stop working again when the IP address is renewed.
+"i do this setting in both Macs"+
Not necessary. As long as you've enabled the settings on the mac you want to control is enough.
+"I turn off the firewall and turn On Remote login"+
IMO a bad idea on both counts. It won't take much for a port knocker to come knocking and potentially hack/hijack the unit. However if you're aware of the risks and seeing as its your mac it's your choice.

  • Stream video from one mac to another mac via iTunes?

I've had trouble streaming purchased iTune video (TV episodes) from my primary computer (Power PC iMac G5) to two other macs (IntelMac iMac & MacBook). I can get the videos to stream about 50% of the time. The other half of the time, iTunes freezes up on the MacBook or IntelMac iMac when I try to open the shared iTunes video that is residing on the G5 iMac. I can always stream music computer to computer without any problem. I am using Airport express as my wireless router.
Any ideas as to why videos don't always stream?
    Thanks.

  • Connecting to another Mac via ethernet

I have been doing some importing and editing on a 13" Macbook Pro and want to transfer some Events and Projects to my MacPro via a direct ethernet connection between the 2 machines.
I can see each of the connected computers in each of their Finder windows and the various HD's. However the HD's from the connected computer does not show up in FCPx as a connected drive. Is it possible to achieve this. Following is the view from the Finder window on the Macbook. I want to copy/move files to the Video Media HD.
    Cheers

FCP X does not support shared drives in that way. Just copy the folders for each Event and each Project you want using the Finder and you will be fine.
There is one important thing to note, though: if when you imported the media to your events you did not check the "Copy files to the Event folder" box, your event will contain "aliases" (technically, symlinks) to the original media, not the files themselves. In this case, you may want to first "Organize Event Files" for those events in FCP X first - so that you actually copy the media to the other machine.

  • How do you transfer files to another mac via cloud

I have a Mac Pro 2.3 GHz w/ Lion OS. What is the best way to transfer files to other computers on my wireless network w/ the same OS?

If the computers are capable and they're all using Lion then I'd probably use Airdrop. However if you are not at the same location then use Dropbox (www.dropbox.com) or wait for iCloud which is scheduled for this fall. You can find out more about iCloud at:

  • How to extract vcards from another Mac via FireWire

    Hello all,
The screen on my wife's G3 800MHz iBook running Tiger finally burned out and I've been forced to manually transfer all of her files onto our emergency backup clamshell 466 MHz iBook SE (yeah, yeah, I know it's time to start thinking about upgrades, not downgrades).
The only problem I've encountered so far is that I can't find her address book entries. I've tried looking for individual vCards to drag over with no luck. Should I be looking for a .plist file, and if so where can I find it? I've searched through both root and user libraries as well as the Address Book application's contents.
    Thanks in advance!
    Jason

the address book data is kept in the following directory:
    /users/username/library/application support/address book.
you want to copy the whole thing.

I've tried to read up on this but couldn't quite grasp how to set it up properly, if anyone could offer any help?
I would like to use a Mac to control another Mac via the internet - i.e. by remote means.
The purpose is to demonstrate how to do something to another person, for instance, by moving the mouse on their screen to load iTunes or something similar - to show how to do simple procedures.
